Yelp
Only through Yelp did I learn that Gyu-kaku Times Square is one of 700 locations worldwide. This was my first experience with the global chain. It was pretty good. We went for an early dinner after seeing Moulin Rough at the Al Hirschfeld Theater only a block away.
I was there for the barbecue. I'm a big fan of Korean BBQ, but hadn't had Japanese BBQ before, called Yakiniku. I love it because there's a BBQ grill at your table and you get your grilling on and they clean up the mess. If you go for it, you grill your own proteins and veggies with a set of Korean and Japanese beef at the top of the menu. Plus, pork, lamb, duck, chicken, salmon, shrimp, and grillable veggies like spinach, asparagus, etc. Most of the proteins come thinly sliced and ready to grill in 3.5-ounce portions
What I ordered, price and my star ratings for each:
- Prime Kalbi Short Rib $16.45, so tender and delicious - 5 stars
- Premium Sirloin $10.45, pretty good, I expected it to be better - 4 stars
- Miso salmon $9.50, steaming, which is what happens to the foil-wrapped fish on the grill isn't a great preparation, plus the quality of the fish was not particularly good, but I'm from the West Coast where salmon is a thing - 3stars
- Spinach with garlic $5.45, foil-wrap steamed with garlic, tasty. - 4 stars
- Brown Rice $4.50, not very good - 3 stars
My sis got a coke and Veggie Garlic Noodles. She said the noodles were good. Definitely worth $11.95. They also have ramen and udon.
The bar is what hurt the dining experience the most. I also ordered a Japanese old fashioned because they couldn't make a Manhattan. It was $24 and not very good. I should have had sake or a beer.
Service was mostly good, but we had one server forget about us, so we were glad when Jose showed up and was very attentive.
If I hadn't gotten the poorly prepared, over-priced drink and had some slow service, I'd probably have given them 4-stars. So order right and get the right server and you may have a 4-star experience. But I've got to call them like I see them. It would be 3 1/2 if Yelp allowed.
