Where to Eat in Tokyo According to the Owner of Wise Sons Deli - AFAR

"A small chain specializing in rare-beef katsu, where each diner receives a personal iron grill to sear the crispy, fried slices of beef to their preferred doneness. Served with rice, dipping soy sauce, wasabi, and an assortment of flaky salts, the dish is described as silky perfection; the basement location usually has a long line and it’s considered a great value (around $15 per person)." - Danielle Walsh

Totally worth the wait—absolutely delicious! The place is tiny, with only nine seats, so don’t come if you’re in a hurry. 🔍 Queueing Tip: The space between the front door and the first-floor entrance fits about 10 people. If you’re standing past the entrance on the road, you’re looking at at least a 45-minute wait, since you’ll need to wait for those 10 people to finish eating. Worst case? If those 9 folks inside the restaurant just sat down—expect 90 minutes or more. ⚠️ In a rush? Do NOT come. 🎊 Got time? It’s 200% worth it. I waited about 55 minutes today solo. 🥩 The steak is deep-fried first, then pan-seared. Crispy on the outside, tender inside. Even without searing, it was juicy and flavorful! The staff was friendly and kind! Visa card accepted.

This place is quite small. Only 18 seats. You wait in line that can be deceptive. Depending on time of day the line can be outside in the street. If you are outside, be prepared for over an hour or two wait time. The food is delicious so maybe it's worth it. I don't speak Japanese so had no idea to ask how long the wait is. If you are inside on the stairs the wait is about 30/40 mins wait. They do have a sign on the wall that says you have option to go to their competitor's location nearby that can hold more people.

Google
this little gem is worth the wait!! the meat was sensational so were all of the side dishes. the sauce they serve with the cabbage salad is perfect!! and the staff is so friendly and welcoming l, telling you all you need to know to cook the meat to perfection! Come hungry because everyone must order their own cutlet. we will be dreaming of the beautiful sounds of high quality meat sizzling for a long time!!

Google
This particular location was quite small with maybe 10 counter seats total. I went at lunch and waited around 40 minutes before being seated. The gyukatsu is just as amazing here as any other location! I had no shame in ordering the 2 filet large set with a drink. I must’ve arrived at a good time because when I left, the line had snaked around the corner.

Google
What. A. Meal!! Went just after the lunch rush and waited a few minutes before my order was taken and shown to my seat inside. It’s an interactive meal experience as you sear the katsu wagyu over a hot stone and flame in front of your plate. Succulent and flavourful. I’d recommend this place and come back again

Google
Super cozy 8 seater, counter seating. Omg, this was the best beer I’ve had and I’ve eaten lots of beef before. Amazing meal. Waited more than an hour in the queue but it’s worth it. Trust me… you gently sear your rare beef cutlet on a little hot stone plate to your decided doneness. Even if you overcook it, it’s tender and utterly delicious…

Google
A Japanese gem specializing in gyūkatsu (牛カツ)—a breaded and deep-fried beef cutlet—this place delivers both authenticity and excellence. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and kindness that made us feel right at home. The staff went above and beyond, taking care of every single detail with genuine hospitality. The food was simply phenomenal! The gyūkatsu was nothing short of perfection, melting in our mouths with every bite. Each dish was expertly prepared, showcasing the rich, buttery flavors that make this cuisine so special. What makes the experience even more unique is that they provide you with a small stone grill, allowing you to cook the meat to your exact preference. The level of service here is truly top-notch. Every staff member showed exceptional attention to detail, ensuring we had an amazing experience from start to finish. The quality, the flavors, and the overall atmosphere make this place an absolute delight. Highly, highly recommended—this is a dining experience you don’t want to miss!

It’s my first time in Japan and of course I would queue for this 🤣 We were told waiting time would be 1hr and 50mins from where we are and we agreed because I figured lines would be longer during lunch or dinner time (we queued around 2pm, also can’t wake up early to go before opening 🤣). Fortunately, the total waiting time only last about an hour and one of the staff even offered us hot tea while we are in line 🙇‍♀️ The long line was understandable for this branch since seats are limited (around 9-10? I guess) As for the food, I got the 2 cutlet set. Definitely worth the price, I love them and the experience overall (except for the queueing part) You can refill the rice once for free. The staff are very welcoming also and one of them speaks English very well, we are able to dine smoothly. Thank you!

Yelp
This place never disappoints. The line is long and moves slowly so don't come too hungry. We waited about 100 minutes but well worth the wait. Each bite is so delicious that it's almost sad when you're down to your last bite. This place is a must go to anyone visiting Japan

Yelp
We waited for about 45 mins before getting into the restaurant. The host takes our order before getting seated so that it's a faster service, which is better good. We didn't have to wait long to get our food. Beef cutlets were good, soft and tender. Not a big fan of the salad and sides. The powder mochi was ok, nothing special. The meal comes with 1 extra refill of rice if you want more rice. The Restaurants AC was good since outside was pretty hot. It was nice to sit in a cool place after being outside in the heat. The restroom was clean and neat. Overall great experience.

Yelp
I love a place that basically sells just one thing. If you want a top notch katsu experience in Tokyo, this is it. Tucked away in a tiny subterranean alcove, there are 9 seats at the bar that each have a tiny grill. You decide how much katsu you want and then they serve it with rice and cabbage salad. Cook away! Delicious food and a very friendly staff. Just be mindful that there is always someone waiting to take your seat so be respectful and don't linger too long.

Yelp
WOW! This meal amazed me. I can see why there is a line for this. We waited probably 1 hour for a party of 6 and a sleeping toddler. Our stroller was foldable so where we were seated it fit right behind us. Presentation of my dish was amazing! I opted for 1 cutlet so that I could have a late night snack after. Turns out, it was the perfect portion for me. The dressing for the cabbage salad is amazing!! The fish roe mixed with the rice paired well with the richness of the cutlet. I didn't use too much of the dipping sauces since I wanted to experience the flavors of the cutlet altogether. Must try if you're nearby. I recommend coming early to line up. They will accommodate big parties but you might have to split.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't be stupid Go early (and often) Don't overcook your meat. If you can, don't cook it at all. Respect other's time. Leave when you're done, there is guaranteed to be a long line of diners waiting for you to vacate your seat. I've had a lot of beef, this one is right up there.

Yelp
$13 for melt in your mouth wagyu grade beef- YES PLEASE I am not even a beef fan but this was absolutely incredibly delicious!!!!!

Yelp
So good that we started and ended our 2 week Japan trip here. The line is no joke - both times we waited over an hour to get seated and eat, but it's worth it if you have the time and patience to wait. The restaurant isn't super big - probably seats around 15? Large parties will definitely have an issue getting in so better to come in groups of 2-3. They take your orders in line so when it's your turn to eat, the food is quickly served. The servers are quite busy both serving customers and wrangling the line & taking orders, but they are always polite and get you what you need. Most things are self serve at your seat anyway. The meat is so tender, and it's fun to grill the meat to whatever rarity you want it. I really like the horseradish sauce with it, or with just a small drizzle of salt. Side dishes wise, the potato salad is good and I always get the warabimochi - personally for my taste buds I ask just for the mochi as one of the side dishes and they'll adjust the price and subtract 100 yen for whatever side dish you don't want. The mochi is so soft and just the right amount of sweetness - perfect way to round out the meal. I think 1-1.5 cutlets is the right amount even if you're hungry, but there is also an option for 2 cutlets as well especially if you're here for the meat and not as much the side dishes.

Yelp
Highly recommend trying gyokatsu motomura! I enjoyed how tender and delicious the meat was. Hearing the sizzle on the stone was just music to my ears. Paired with the rice, salad, beer, soup, and small side dishes it was a very well balanced meal. I'm so glad we didn't have to wait too long, which I honestly wasn't expecting (might have been because we were there on a weekday for lunchtime).

Yelp
By far the best thing I ate in Japan! If you are traveling you need to try this place! They have locations throughout Tokyo and it's a bit of a long wait about 1.5-2 hours because it's quite small inside but well worth the wait! My boyfriend and I both got the lunch special which comes with rice, miso soup, different dipping sauces, mochi and a drink. You can choose how much cutlet you want such as 1, 1.5, or 2. 1 was enough for me. There's a mini stove you can cook the meat on. It was so freaking tender and just melts in your mouth. I have never tasted anything like it! You have to try this place if you are ever in the area.
google avatar

Jordananderika P.

Yelp
The dining area is really small so you may have to wait a bit but it's totally worth it! The food and the service were impeccable!! I almost ate my whole entire plate and I never do that!! Ever!! I also had my grand baby there and they were so accommodating and sweet to her!! Best time ever!!

Yelp
i was saur upset when i finished devouring this meal... i didn't want it to end! probably my favorite meal by far in tokyo or japan! dare i say! i don't know how they do it -- they have to massage the cows or something. the first bite i food orgasm'd and i haven't had that feeling or satisfaction from food in a minute. i wasn't expecting it to taste THAT good breh line is worth it ! i don't care how long it's gonna take me but i'm craving it again and again it's lichrally so simple yet so amazing and cheap like $12-16/ person like c'mon man i'm dreaming!

Yelp
BEST meal that we had in Shinjuku. The wagyu can be cooked to your liking and each bite is an explosion of flavor. We tried to go a 2nd time but the line snaked down the stairs. Service was excellent and it was helpful that they explained which sauce went with the beef, rice, and salad. The food came out fast. A refill of barley rice is free. Seating is limited. Not ideal for groups of 4 or more if you hope to sit together. This place does not serve fish/sushi so only eat here is you want wagyu cutlet.
google avatar

Yelp
100% worth the hype! Our party of 5 waited on line in this tight staircase for about 15-20 minutes without an appointment but it was worth the wait. The meal comes with unlimited rice and various side dishes. I really enjoyed searing my steak cutlet to perfection. Even when I accidentally overcooked it, the steak was extremely tender and so juicy! It was an incredible experience and worth the trip if you're in Tokyo.

Yelp
You def gotta check this place out if you're into succulent, melt-in-your-mouth gyukatsu (beef cutlet). I got the (1 cutlet) lunch set ¥1643|$10.85. There are also 1.5 cutlet and 2 cutlet options. An additional bowl of rice is free of charge. Gyukatsu Motomura has countless locations throughout Japan. The Shibuya shop is extremely popular so be prepared to wait if you have your heart set on this shop. I believe my queue was ~40m on a weekday (late lunch). If you're not a fan of waiting, try a different shop in a less popular neighborhood, bc there are plenty and I'm assuming the quality should be very similar.

Yelp
Small little restaurant in walking distance from the Shibuya Scramble Crossing. It's not the largest restaurant, so if you have larger groups it may be hard to get a table together. I had 7 in my party and we had to be split up. Not much of a problem. The menu is fairly straightforward, there are limited options of things to order. They will deliver your meats to cook at your table, delicious miso soup, a salad and various condiments to go along with it. You wont be rushed eating here, but it is a very popular spot so they want to get you in and out as fast possible. If you are used to eating and sitting around drinking afterwards, that wont fly.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
I really can't think of a bad thing, supposdely there was a line but we only waited less than 10 minutes on a staircase that was narrow as a closet the workers are super efficient, taking orders as you go in the menu is small... its katsu beef that you cook on your own the portions are perfect and the sides compliment amazin its bar seating so everything is literally handed to you didnt see a bathroom or needed one food is 5 star for taste and execution now i know why people come here

Yelp
This was by far my favorite meal in Japan. I don't know why it took me this long to hear about gyukatsu, but it's everything I want in meal. They serve you a fried but mostly uncooked beef cutlet (the inside is definitely a lower cook than just rare and looks raw). You then can cook individual slices to your desired doneness over a stone plate, and eat it with one of their provided sauces or just with some salt and wasabi. The beef was extremely tender and the cooking portion was reminiscent of KBBQ, which I really enjoyed. Would recommend getting a 1.5x or 2x portion of the cutlet, as it is much smaller than the photos make it out to be.
google avatar

Tanner K.

Yelp
One of the best meals we had in all of Tokyo. If you're even thinking about going, go. You'll probably have to queue for a bit, but it's all part of the true Japanese experience. The food is incredible and I think about that meal at least once a week. Authentic Japanese vibes and a staff happy to serve you.

Yelp
This place so knocks it out of the park that we went twice during our December/January trip to Tokyo! The tender melt in your mouth meat is lightly battered and deep fried and comes out medium rare to your tableside. Each person has their own stone hot plate where you can cook it to how you like it prepared. The fresh wasabi on the side is worth adding to your soy sauce or rock salt and the garlic dipping sauce is awesome! The set course menu is the most popular and you can choose from one to two cutlets or more. Each comes with steamed rice, tsukemono (pickled veggies), miso soup, shredded fresh cabbage with dressing tableside, a small scoop of potato salad and warabi mochi. Rice refills are free of charge and for 100 yen you can get extra miso soup too. The ambiance is lively with just four small tables and kitchen side benc sating and the staff are great and get your food out quickly. There can be long lines at peak times but rest easy that it goes pretty fast.

Yelp
A two hour wait at 5:00 on a Friday night ( one hour in the rain in the street and one hour in a narrow stairway) but the food was delicious, reasonably priced, and unlike any I've had. Now I understand why Gyukatsu Motomura was recommended by a friend as "a must". Their menu is very simple-a set featuring your choice of 1,1.5 or 2 cutlets of wagyu beef cutlet. They are very lightly breaded, super tender cuts of raw beef that you cook yourself on a tiny hot stone grill. It comes with the finest sliced cabbage and a really good salad dressing. The rice is fluffy and good as Japanese rice is and it was recommended that we season it with the Yamaimo (grated mountain yam). I loved the salty accompaniments of mentaiko and pickled greens. The set also included a bowl of miso soup and two pieces of warabimochi to end on a sweet note. Everything was portioned just right including my super dry beer so I was feeling content until my cousin asked me to help me finish some of her beef slices which put me over the top. We voted on whether or not it was worth the wait. Half said yes and half said no. I was very happy I got to experience this and grateful to my guy cousin for waiting in line while we got to shop. There are many locations around Tokyo. Go off hours for less of a wait.
google avatar

Yelp
Tiny restaurant that is easily missed walking down the street, there's stairs going down if you don't see the line of people waiting to go in. The staff has you order while you are waiting in line so it's more efficient. We came on a weekday around 1pm and got caught in the lunch rush and waited almost an hour. The food is great! I got the one filet set which was more than enough for me. My grown son got two filets and struggled eating everything. The set comes with a drink, rice, miso soup, cabbage salad and some dipping sauces. We also got some mentai fish eggs and warabi mochi for dessert. Price is decent for the amount of food we got, I try to come here at least once when I go to Tokyo
google avatar

Sam B.

Yelp
This is one of the best place to eat Wagyu beef. It's a smaller restaurant but the food and service is up to par. To avoid a longer line try to grab food from this place off peak hours. Should you decide to wait i line, it's all worth it. Order the double, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Danica R.

Yelp
This was worth the wait! I've tried Gyukatsu for the first time when I was in Kyoto, and so this is my second time having it and it is just as delicious as I can remember! This restaurant is tucked away on the basement level, so know that the place will be small. But the overall experience was amazing! I enjoy cooking my own meats, and the beef cutlets here were just the perfect portion size (I got the biggest serving LOL), and the sauces and wasabi paired perfectly with the beef. Also, the miso soup is totally different from here in the states, which I loved. If you haven't added salt on it, do it! It enhances the flavor of the meat so much. Side note: I think every Gyukatsu restaurant serves different types of meat. Because the one in Kyoto had sirloin and other beef cuts (still delicious), but this one in Shibuya had only one cut. But as long as the flavor profile is there, I don't mind!
google avatar

Johnson N.

Yelp
Gyukatsu is my wife and I's favorite restaurant in Japan! It's worth the wait! We've been four times across our two trips. On this past trip we went for our first meal and our last meal. We literally leave Japan craving Gyukatsu because the food is that dang delicious. The meal is so tender and just melts in your mouth. All of the sides are wonderful. We LOVE the barley tea that is served complimentary with your meal. Everything about this place is delicious and I wish I could have it more often.. but I guess that just means I need to start planning my next trip to Japan!

Yelp
We were walking around Shibuya scramble and sky and decided to stop in for dinner on a rainy Friday evening at 5:00pm. This location was more easy to find than the other one at Shibuya. We are really pleasantly surprised as we were able to sit immediately. Although I heard this was a chain We loved this place because it felt like a hole in the wall And that the locals came here. I wanted to sit at the counter but that was pretty much for single solo customers. That being said, I loved the meal and how it was served rare and we got to cook it a little bit more On the Japanese stone. The beef was still tender and I loved using all The seasonings on it. I also liked the dressing on the cabbage salad. We both ordered a small cutlet With beer and highball. It came with miso soup, a bit of Potato salad And small green radishes. I enjoyed the rice too! This meal came out to be about $28. I only Wish my beef cutlet was a little bigger.
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
We waited in line for the wrong location but was still an hour and a half wait in the freezing cold district of Shibuya. Decided to eat first before we head to the famous crossing. They literally come out to hand you the menu about 30 minutes before seating you. The little tavern fits about 10-15 people. You have counter seats and a small table in the back. As you get closer to the top of the stairs, they'll come out to take your orders. That's when you know you're about to be up soon. I went with their smallest set. What's the hype about I wonder after researching others. It's different. I imagined katsu with the crispy outside but it arrived medium rare, cooked it on each side for three minutes or less. Great experience though.
google avatar

John Z.

Yelp
This is one of best beef I've ever had. They fried the beef first by using some special seasoning and flour mixture wrapping around the beef. They controlled the time and temperature so the outside is crispy when inside is still rare. Then they allow you to grill the beef so inside can be well done or medium depending on your needs. Price is reasonable. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Every part of this meal was fantastic. The meat was amazing--crispy on the outside but tender and nearly like butter biting into it, no exaggeration! The stone was hotter than expected, so I "overcooked" the first couple pieces but they were still very tender. Better yet, all the sides and sauces were great too. I was surprised by the potato salad, which was a pretty smooth consistency and a little sweet, which paired well with the other salty flavors. I also normally don't like wasabi at all, but with the fat on the beef, it balanced out for a nice added flavor. The rice was hearty and the miso just topped it all off! There was a decent wait to get in but they took our orders while in line and it was barely 5 minutes to get out food once seated inside. Would definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
I wanted to grill your own meat experience which is how we ended up here. It was on the basement level and has about 8-9 seats in the restaurant. The pricing was a little steep in my opinion and the wait was about an hour from when you reach the street level doorway if the line is in the stairwell. It comes with a salad, your choice of number of cutlets, rice and miso and three sides for a buy up. Overall not bad as long as you don't overcook your beef. Staff were nice and the waitress spoke 4 languages I believe. Over 3/5 would recommend to a friend looking for a cooking experience
google avatar

R R.

Yelp
We loved this place!! Got lost finding this place. You'll pass it by if you don't see the signage. There are narrow stairs going down. It's the entrance and exit. Food was excellent!! Great experience and service was nice. We will definitely come back again on another trip. Wait time wasn't to bad for us about 45 minutes.
google avatar

Sheila B.

Yelp
Always expect a wait, but know that you'll get to enjoy a delicious gyu katsu meal. Waits can be as long as 2 hours sometimes. But some locations have a ticketing system now! In 2018, we randomly found this spot (different location that now has multiple stores) while walking around. And it's stayed a favorite of mine and I knew I had to go back. Some photos of the menus which is pretty simple, what to expect for a wait (I was at a spot where it was 45 min), and the beautiful meal itself. Enjoy!
google avatar

Helen K.

Yelp
Around 5 to 10 minutes off of Shibuya exit, this is a must on your Tokyo trip! (There's 2 locations in Shibuya but I believe this is bigger and less crowded location.) There's about 9 kitchen window bar stool seating with 3 tables in the back with two 4 seater and one 2 seater. We got there 20 minutes before the opening and got in on the first wave! I would recommend lining up before the opening. They only offer gyukatsu sets on the menu but with different variations like with an alholic beverage and with different portion sizes of meat. I got the middle option but ended up being too much for me that I gave to my husband. However, from the first bite, it was so so good!!! It's flash fried but you can cook it more on your portable grill for your enjoyment. The cooking and sizzling sound just adds to the experience and the meat is super super tender and juicy! I had low expectation but it truly surprised and can see what's the hype around this place!
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
This place is worth the hype! My husband and I decided to come here for lunch with our private tour guide on our honeymoon. Luckily our tour guide, Mari, was super down to try this place out with us. With quite a bit of locations in Tokyo, this location was a bit hard to find but Mari was able to locate it for us quickly. Luckily when we got there, there was only 3 seats open out of a total of 8. Place location was really small, but we managed to get our meals quickly. We all ended up getting their No.1: Beef Cutlet (130g), barley rice, grated yam set which was 1400 yen ($9.92). Such a steal! For a bigger cutlet (260g) it would be 2200 yen ($15.58). Still really good priced. What I really liked about this place is that you get to cook your own meat on a hot stone plate. The beef was served slightly cooked in the inside and deep fried on the outside, and the idea was to self cook the beef a bit more to your own liking. I like my meat medium rare so I didn't need to cook it for too long. Everything was so good and the quality of meat was superb. I think next time I will go for the 260g beef cutlet and pay the extra few dollars ;) Definitely recommend this place for those visiting Japan. Hands down one of my favorite places to eat!

Yelp
Waited about an hour for this location, which I heard wasn't bad at all for around 6 PM. After seeing this place all over social media, I was honestly scared it would be a tourist trap. HOWEVER, this place 100% deserves the hype. I got the medium set with the additional 3 side dishes; the 3 added variety to the meal, but it's not an absolute must add. The meat was perfectly coated and as someone who doesn't eat rare meats, I was glad I could cook them to my liking. With that being said, the meat was sooo fresh that I kept most of them medium rare and it was so delicious that we planned to go back, but ended up not having time in our schedule again.

Yelp
Worth the wait! I came with a group of 6 colleagues. We were told that we'd need to split our group up, so we were sat as a group of 2 at the counter and a table of 4. We waited maybe 30-40 minutes. We joined the line out of the door with 4-5 people ahead of us. The line continues down the stairs into the restaurant. They had an employee handing out menus as you got into the restaurant and they took your orders before they seated you. I got the single cutlet set, but I'd get either the 1.5 cutlet set of the 2 cutlet set if I make it back to Tokyo. I was on my last bites of the cutlet and got sad that I didn't have more food. Luckily, one of my friends got a 2 cutlet set and gave me a few pieces of his. The meat was delicious and tender, and the sauces that came with it were also so good. This place is all about the food. There's not a lot of ambiance, and it was warm in the restaurant. The power also went out towards the end of our meal for a few seconds. Basically, this is not a 5 star restaurant with ambiance and fancy serving elements, but the food was 5 star. I'd strongly recommend it and would go again and again if I could. My husband had joined me on part of my trip to Japan, but he was gone by the time we made it here. It's the #1 thing that he missed that I'd like him to experience the next time we're in Tokyo.

Yelp
We were hunting for dinner while doing some shopping in Shibuya and came across this place. There was a line out the door and we decided to stick it out and see what all the fuss was about. so glad we did! This is a tiny Waygu Gyukatsu place with maybe an 8 person counter and a few tables. The menu is short, just pick from 1 / 1.5 / 2 pieces, and a few options for sides and drinks. We were starving having not eaten all day and opted for 2 pieces and it was a plentiful quantity. The Gyukatsu was very good quality and we enjoyed finishing off the cooking to our liking on the small stone grill. There were nice options for sauces and the fresh thinly sliced raw cabbage was great to eat along with the meat. The meat just melts in your mouth and is so full of flavor! We also enjoyed the little potato salad side and the rice went well with the Gyukatsu as well. Brave the wait and have a great meal here. The staff were so friendly as well!

Yelp
We went around 8pm on a Friday night & lucky for us we got the last table with no wait. It's a pretty compact restaurant, chairs are tiny. I was not a fan of the smoke in there, not enough ventilation. The dishes have a good amount of meat served with a bowl of rice. It's served with a small soup & salad (both we weren't a fan of). It also comes with a curry sauce which was really good. Each person is given their own tiny burner and you can eat it immediately or cook to your liking. Th waitress was kind & spoke a little English so that was helpful for us!

Yelp
Long lines, so come early so you're guaranteed seating! If you come earlier during the day, the oil is probably a bit cleaner so when they fry the beef, it comes out golden brown. Unfortunately, I came closer during closing time, so the oil wasn't going to get switched out at all. We were the last round served so it wasn't as golden brown and crispy but still very flavorful and good. My beef katsu almost didn't need to be seared at the table. It was cooked pretty medium rare and the last thing I wanted to do was overcook wagyu while in Japan. That's a sin!!! Overall, love love this place.

Yelp
Expect to wait 45+ minutes during peak hours but believe me when I say it's worth the wait! Staff were very nice, friendly and efficient. The greeter, takes your order and assist in serving food. Place is clean and welcoming. Food was simple but yet tasty and filling! It was the best wagyu katsu that I've tasted!

Yelp
I LOVED this meal. We went around 6PM and waited for 45 minutes. They took our orders while we were in line. When we entered, our meal was served within 5 mins of sitting. I highly recommend ordering either 1.5 or 2x cutlets because you'll want more. Everyone in our group did so as it was delicious. I ordered the set with 3 side dishes - some pickled veggies, some roe, and potato salad. It comes with some mochi as a dessert. Additionally, you get two dipping sauces, some miso, and some grated white radish. You get 1 free refill of barley rice. I didn't get the rice refill as I was content with more of the katsu than the rice. Service was great and they will walk you through everything if needed. It's a small restaurant but they were friendly. The waitress even put down a basket so I could put my purse down next to me without it getting dirty. We went back another time and waited less than 30 minutes. Same level of service and quality of food!

Yelp
Delicious and fun meal to be able to cook your food on your own hot stone plate. Very simple menu, specializing in one dish. Sides were also delicious.

Yelp
* * * EXPERIENCE * * * After a long day of shopping in Shibuya, ready to get some comfort food and Motomura had been on my must try list for a while. The restaurant is located in the basement, arrived at 7pm and got seated 30 mins after. There are a lot of set options and decided to go with #4. * * * FOOD * * * Beef Set #4: A+ The beef was served slightly cooked in the inside and deep fried on the outside, a small hot stone plate was provided and the idea was to self cook the beef a bit more to your liking before eating. I like medium rare so I just cooked the meat about 15 secs on each side - oh wow the meat was very, very soft and there was a strong "cow taste" to it. I tried a few pieces with 30 secs on each side to make it medium, and the softness was still there! Dipping it with wasabi made it even better. The breading was very thin so it didn't make me full yet enhance the overall taste of the beef. I have had a lot of Tonkatsu before, but gyukatsu was first and I'm sure it won't be the last. Quality of meat is obviously super important and in my opinion this place aced it.

Yelp
We enjoyed our dinner here. The wait wasn't that long for us, but we did arrive around 530ish. The wait staff brings the menu to you while you are waiting in line, so they can prepare your food just a little quicker so you don't need to wait that long and you can polish off all that yummy steak to your own personal grilled taste. Just don't keep the meat on that heat surface too long because it is hot and your meat will overcook. I also really enjoyed the warabi mochi with kinako, what a treat!

Yelp
I cannot believe I just found out about this wonderful place during my third visit to Japan... but the rave is unquestionably real! It was kind of difficult searching for the restaurant because it is located in a small basement with an 8 seated counter and Google Maps was not cooperating during that time. When I saw a bunch of people in line around the area, I knew I was near. I waited a little bit over an hour and just like any other hyped up places in Tokyo, it's well worth the wait. The beef katsu is SO GOOD, it's so juicy and tender; clearly way better quality than the meat in the states. It's prepared deep fried with bread crumbs, but rare on the inside, accompanied by rice, veggies, and miso soup. A small tabletop grill is provided to cook the beef however you like - such a fun and interesting experience! Highly recommend!!

Yelp
This place was totally worth the 1 hr wait on a Thu night. Preset Gyukatsu meal w/ a Asahi beer and one free rice bowl refill cost 3100 JPY = $21 USD. Deal of the century and it was DELICIOUS!
