NYC Tofu Shop Fong On Returns to Chinatown | Eater NY

"A 35,000-square-foot H Mart will open inside the American Dream mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey this year, and I’m told the store will feature a restaurant with chefs from around the world, a bakery, and a live music venue as part of the large retail footprint; the 3-million-square-foot shopping complex opens on October 25." - Carla Vianna

Nice 👍🙂 Korean grocery store 🏪. See pics and videos for more details. Prices looked premium but you will get what you are looking for in terms of groceries, vegetables, fruits etc. In fact I saw star ⭐ fruit here which is quite rare. Items were neatly stacked and kept hyginely. Billing queues are longer in weekends. Thanks 👍😊

Located in Court A Level 1 of American Dream mall, this H Mart is the cleanest and prettiest among the ones around the area. It is not as big as some of the other individual store locations, aisles and checkout lanes are thinner. The store is open all 365 days of the year. They still got most of inventory of Korean groceries, vegetables, fruits, snacks, candies, kitchenware, small toys and all other things we see find usually in H Marts. They have the meat and seafood stations as well. The food court is separate, right in front of the entrance of store. Lots of associates walk around the store to keep it clean and tidy. I went in to buy couple of drinks from the store. There were multiple checkout lanes open. Didn’t have to wait too long, was quick and easy.

Food is so bland or too sweet, not authentic at all. Music is blasting with cringy music to the point where you can’t enjoy yourself or hear yourself think. The pastries are old and stale and the ones that are meant to be warm aren’t. The market is well set up but the options are so limited. There are barely any fresh made street foods the typical H Mart offers which kind of takes away from the experience.

A small H Mart located in the American Dream mall - I suppose you can get some groceries out of the way while your fellow shoppers hit the mall or do other fun. Prices are bit higher than the equivalent stand-alone shops in Fort Lee or Little Ferry. Veggies are all packed up neatly - no self-picking, take the whole package or nothing. Meats and frozen section, a lot of snacks, some home goods, and a checkout that needs a little better line control. They also have an HMart Food Hall across the way. Located in section A, 1st floor of the American Dream Mall.

Such a convenience to have this store within the mall especially the location is just perfect. To add on that the store is open all year round. The prices of the products compared to the prices within the mall is slightly cheaper. It was convenient for me after the aquarium to purchase drinks rather than the other stores because I was able to save. Everything was well organized in there.

Great selection of fruits and veggies, at decent prices too! Will probably make this my go to spot for both moving forward. Wish their Korean beauty section was a bit bigger. Lots of interesting snacks from Korea and Japan. You can also find some western foods and drinks here and there too. The checkout section is super crammed and the aisle is so small, they may want to rethink that part of the store. Went during opening weekend, so it was extremely crowded, even at night. We will have to see how crowds continue throughout the week.

I’m glad to see some Japanese stuff and thinly slice meat😋 I didn’t see japanese Mayo but haven’t looked thoroughly. More reason to come back to American dream. Reasonable price and lots of selections. I found our Feb chips so very happy. Hope to see PIZZA POTATO Chips from Japan 🇯🇵 also please!

Large and well organized HMart! Loved their selection of grocery and meat. If you are hanging out in the mall this is a great place for affordable snacks.

Yelp
I am obsessed with H-Mart. They have the best stuff like always. I have been to several locations across the country and I am never disappointed. This location is a pretty decent size with lots of options, easy check-out, and friendly service. The junk food selection is beyond my wildest dreams. They carry Japanese Kit-Kat flavors that are hard to get, even at other Asian markets. I stocked up!!

Yelp
Each time we hit the American Dream Mall (usually to eat) the younger twin begs his mom (the softy!) to hit H-Mart before heading home. (And I just wait outside while they shop.) Then one Friday evening I decided to venture inside with them and... it's whimsical and frabjous and a tad absurd and silly and "white glove" clean and perfectly stocked. I 'knew' that such creations as "crab-flavored potato chips" existed somewhere out there in the world but now there's an entire rack of oddball and quirky flavors (like matcha Kit-Kats, which we had to try ourselves) right at my fingertips?! Or a ginseng drink with the actual plant floating inside the glass container? Absolutely bananas. (Oh, they have those too... red ones and little yellow ones and...) They have designated "Western" aisles and it was funny (and a wee bit sad) to see one single container of 'pot cheese' (Galbani ricotta cheese) in the dairy section. (I doubt anyone will need/want that if they're at an H-Mart.) One interesting thing I noticed: a lot of stuff was sold in 3-packs (like this mango ice cream - looking exactly like a fresh mango, and boba tea sets) whereas in American supermarkets it's usually an even number. The one side of my brain thought it was clever, "Oh, that's because of the one-child-policy China used to follow." - but the other half of my brain had to chime in that H-Mart is Korean. Begrudgingly (cause of my poor wallet!) I am now a big fan of this store. (Their food court across the way? Not as much.)

Yelp
Whenever I see an H-mart I HAVE to go in and take a peak. Mainly for the Asian snacks, because well, I'm a closet junkfood eater. This place has a wide variety of snacks to rummage through. Other than that, it's worth to step in and look. As you know, all H-mart's are not built the same and will carry items and products that others may not have.

Yelp
This is a decent H Mart - a nice happenstance while meandering around the mall. Service was friendly, and the place was very clean and tidy. Found some cool things: - Korean convenience store pouched drinks - huge selection of single pack ramen (nice not to have to commit to buying a multi-pack)

Yelp
Amazing spot. 1) The must try items here are the Hokkaido milk waffles and cream donuts. The Hokkaido milk waffles is probably the best item I ever tried in H-Mart. 2) I enjoy coming here to get soda, far for affordable than the rest of the mall.

Yelp
The H-Mart American Dream is so nice! We've come here a couple of times already. The store is well maintained and clean. Produce selection is good considering it's inside the mall. I can get everything that I get at my local store here plus more. We're looking forward to when the H-Mart Food Court opens!

Yelp
Large and amazing H-mart! Really enjoyed checking out this store. We purchased the salmon sashimi, lobster roll, and squid kimbap. All the food was delicious and good value compared to restaurants. The checkout service was fast and we came in the morning and it was quick. The ambiance was good in the morning where there was tons of seating. Later around 1pm it got really busy. There's a ton of food hall options.

Yelp
This H Mart had sriracha chili sauce! So hard to find these days in the west coast so I had to get it! They have everything here and the store is clean! Checkout was speedy and efficient.

Yelp
Supermarket in mall . Good selection either emphasis on Asian products. Ok service. Prices are a little high . Industrial ambience.

Yelp
Very clean, well stocked and so cold in the store!! Walked around the entire store to check out their stock and compare it to the other store near Garden State Mall. We bought some pastries to sample and Ibought some konjac jelly packets. The prices are comparable to the Route 17 store. The pastries were very good. I just couldn't understand who is going grocery shopping at American Dream? Even if I did live near by, I have to be very quick with my shopping if I don't want to pay $5.00 for parking just to get my groceries in UNDER a half hour??? An odd choice. I think it'd be better if this location was more for snacks, chips, drinks , ramen, stationary and beauty products. A place to explore and try out items from Korea. I couldn't see myself carrying bags of fresh meat, veggies and other kitchen staples all about that mall.

Yelp
New location opened at the American Dream Mall. Very nice and clean and all fruits are vegetables are sealed in wrap. In the seafood section, the staff will get the items as they are in the enclosed counter, not a self-serve and bag yourself. There are some items they don't have or ran out- yes, each store is slightly different. Seems a tad smaller than other stores and check out is definitely smaller. If you are buying a lot, make sure you have your own wheelable shopping cart as you will not be able to roll the H-Mart cart outside the store to the parking lot.

Yelp
The store is clean, organized, & a bit on the pricey side but I think the convenience of it being inside of the mall makes up for it especially if you're in need of a couple of things. Be prepared to look down every aisle because this store sells a variety of Asian snacks, noodles, drinks, meat, & packaged bakery. The lines were long but they had plenty of cashiers working that day so it wasn't that bad. I will definitely be back!

Thomas K.

Yelp
My wife and I love hmart, have been shopping at the ktown and Paramus locations for years. We decided to try the American dream location as we just discovered it, but found it to be a huge letdown: - 3 packages of noodles we picked up had fungus inside which thankfully the cashiers pointed out to us - 2 packages of mushrooms were bad which we only discovered once we got back home - 2 wrapped tomatoes that were also bad when we got home - 1 bag of Lychee with fungus on it - There was no one to bag groceries and the cashiers reluctantly and barely helped, mostly just standing there, and only began to help us bag when I asked for help, which they could see we needed as we had a full basket of food and a very active toddler. The cashier checking out my 80 year old mother also didn't help until I saw what was happening and had to jump in and help her with the heavy items - No shopping carts here, just large plastic pull-along baskets This would probably be a convenient location if you already happen to be in the mall and only need a few things, but otherwise I would definitely skip this place

Yelp
Well H Mark open at the American Dream, and while it's not unusual for a supermarket to be located in a mall, why did they pick the mall with the worst roadways and lack of directions signs, and parking where you have to pay after hour is beyond me. I do like the store even if the food court is not ready yet. it has everything that the other H Mark have that I have been too. And just like the other stores the food organized and display well in a nice clean environment. I now if I am at the mall I may shop the store but I rather go to the Little Ferry store than here if I need to go to an H Mart

Yelp
Newly opened. Nice clean store. They have nice section for marinated meats for Korean BBQ, also they carry many products from Korea. I would go there again. Nice addition to American Dream mall. This location is much smaller than many other H-mart I been to.

Yelp
I would not just go there for grocery shopping especially if I have to pay for parking. The stuff is a little different from Westchester New York branches. I think the Hartsdale one is still my favorite and seems the most down to earth. This one has many higher end stuff and the price is generally higher

D K K.

Yelp
Love H-mart, but this one is hard to find. American Dream is a huge maze. You have to know exactly which parking deck, at what level to get to it easily. Otherwise, I'm sticking with the regular H-marts in regular locations. The store itself was good, up to par with all the other H-marts. Prices are different??

Ethan C.

Yelp
Be aware of Expired items We love all the H Marts for decades, until we shopped here, we found most of the items we purchased either expired or about expired, I contacted the store manager, only for the item was expired, but she was very rude when I told her I can not return to NJ from New York, and would like to exchange it with a new one at any H Mart in New York location, she kept saying that she couldn't doing anything if I can not go to her store. I explained to her, not that I wanted to return, I just wanted to exchange, I'm not going to spend time and toll to go NJ just for $9 expired Miso paste, (also marinate beef short ribs about expired in one day) you have the website to ship the order, why couldn't just ship it to me? all I can say do not buy anything in this H Mart bad food, worst customer service from their management team.

Yelp
So pricy and made mistake buying sushi and thought it meant of 50% discount sushi will give me 50% discount at the register. I did not know the ones on the shelf was already discounted price. I was also charged for $9.30 from EZ-Pass just by going to this H-mart.

Elaina L.

Yelp
HMart is always a great experience. Having an HMart in the mall (they also validate parking) is genius. Would 100% go again.

John C.

Yelp
There's not as much selection as other HMarts. It's also weird that they wouldn't let me take my shopping cart to my car (maybe it's because it's in a mall?). Top tip: Don't load up your carts. Buy only what you can carry comfortably.

J F.

Yelp
Hmart is having a moment, and their new American Dream location embodies that moment. Their new flagship location in East Rutherford, HMart, can hold its own and compete with the likes of Whole Foods. The prices are competitive, and the portion sizes for items are more significant than expected, so I know my grocery trip will count. The grocery store is enormous; I don't see how I could bump into any other customer, even at its busiest times. The food looks fantastic, and the fish section is fresh and offers a selection I don't usually see in most grocery stores. Something hit me when I look around the grocery store. This location is not necessarily the type of place you're going to see more delivery service couriers versus patrons. Shopping at HMart American Dream is an experience, one that is efficient, reasonably priced, a modem marvel of a grocery store, and also comfortable to shop in.
