Where to Shop for Specialty Groceries in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"Two locations in Mira Mesa and Kearny Mesa ensure you’re never without Korean staples. Pre-marinated meats like pork belly, chicken and beef might be the big draw but don’t miss out on the selection of kimchi, roasted seaweed snacks, and specialty ingredients like black bean paste." - Darlene Horn

Google
This is a solid spot for Korean groceries. They have a nice bakery and a pretty big food court. They also have a nice good selection of dessert rice cakes and ready-to-eat meals. The produce section is big, but most of it isn’t organic and could be fresher. Still, if you’re looking for Korean ingredients, they pretty much have everything you need. Worth checking out!

Google
I love that you have several options — both the market to buy fresh products and groceries, and a variety of small food spots offering different types of cuisine. This time, we ate at Tiokipoki: rice, bulgogi bowl, and spicy seafood noodles . Everything was delicious and very affordable. The ramen or noodles are enough for 2 or 3 people because the bowl is huge.

Google
Great place to get Asian / Korean goods. Sometimes they're produces decent price sometimes more, but they always have a lots of mushrooms and different varieties and interesting fruits. I love getting red bean mochi here and odd ice cream flavors like avocado, ube and queso, halo halo, and interesting drinks. They have an entire aisle of various ramen packets. In the front of the store they also have a coffee shop in about 5 store fronts that serve food like a mini Mall food court.

Google
One of the best places to get Korean groceries as well as other Asian groceries My personal favorite of coming here is getting all the Japanese candies. I also love all the selections of Ramen they offer. Not to mention the ready to grill and barbecue meat for easy home cooking. Highly recommend to come here for any reason, they do have a food court. And all their produce is very high-quality. Fun fact, you’ll never see a four aisles or a four lane

Google
It was good, it had everything. Except for one employee who we tried to ask for assistance wasn't very helpful and constantly talked to an associate while working, and then when we asked for help another time. He just brushed us off. Other than that, though, the store was really good. I don't have a picture of the associate, but if I remember correctly, he was around 5ft 2 inches? Grey hair and glasses. Not sure if that's helpful. 🤔 but yeah.

Google
One of my favorite places. Is like Disneyland for me. Everything is so clean, you can always find someone who speaks Spanish or English. You can find almost anything you need for your recipes. If you get the card and register you can find awesome discounts and better prices. It's a great place to learn about other cultures because I always google what they use that product for. Love that place.

Google
They also have a great food court. I got the chicken katsu

Google
1st time here, and it is an awesome place. Found a lot of healthy alternatives like teas, veggies, and new spices for cooking. Love the idea of fresh seafood and even the tea bar and hot food shops. Will definitely be coming back again! Awesome place. I wish I had known of this gem sooner.

Yelp
this is the place you want to go to get veggies, meats and seafood. they have never disappointed and have always had a great selection of vegetables that you just might not see at a chain supermarket. The seasoning section will really bring out different ideas for the chef in you. This location does not have self-check-out, but I don't think I've ever waited longer than maybe one other person in front of me. They have so many checkers and they're so fast and normally people's baskets aren't filled up like you're getting ready for the zombie apocalypse. They have a lunch section too, for some of the more complex foods that you would use as a side and don't really want to make, you can pick up your sides there cooked cleaned and ready to eat. Just a fun spot.

Yelp
Great supermarket, lots of familiar items with a mix of essential Asian staples and fun things to try. There's a bakery , a Photo Booth , and all kinds of fresh food daily ! Whole place not too huge, not very loud but overall great store. Some items kinda pricey but it comes with the territory. Workers are chill , respectful and keep to themselves. Parkings a little tight so come ready to hunt for a good spot or if you just wanna run in for a look they do have 20 minute parking (or so) in the very front of the store. Some people come here just for groceries but .. i come for the Food Hall ! Mine and my bf's favorite spot right now probably has to be zzang hotdog in the corner tucked away in the food hall. yummy, fresh , hot and crispy Korean corndogs with fun flavorful twists. good every time and there's always a new one on the menu to try when we show up. If that's not your thing there's Ramen , Chicken Katsu , Tteokbokki and many other fresh hot food dishes to try right in the next stall. So grab a friend, loved one or just your car keys to grab a bite and check it out. you won't be sorry.

Yelp
This Hmart is conveniently located off the 805 on Balboa. Parking was a challenge. Ive been to several Hmarts. This one did not have all the veggies but they have a good selection of everything else. I love that they have a Tou le jous and a small food hall. It's one stop shopping!
google avatar

Yelp
I love these stores they have everything from all kinds of noodles, vegetables, hot foods, condiments, ingredients, kitchenware, seafood, frozens, anything and everything! They are a bit pricey for a lot of items but they are quality Korean items. If I venture through every aisle I could spend hours here and buy unnecessary items.

Yelp
Asian Grocery Markets are always filled with wonderful finds that you cant get at the local market. H Mart specializes in Korean goods. Whats great are the prices and how large it is here. The front offers an amazing bakery, cosmetic store and a food mart for your empty tummies. Don't miss the back where you can find a huge selection of fresh seafood and meats!
google avatar

Yelp
Good location, parking is a bit cramped, but extremely happy with the food court selections. Definitely able to have a variety of delicious foods ready. The grocery store is very cozy - lots of variety available from fresh produce, home goods, snacks, beverages, and selection of pre-marinated meat and pre cooked foods is extensive. Pricing is reasonable, and really makes it handy for at home hotpot and KBBQ nights.

Yelp
Came on a Wed afternoon and it was not crowded at all. Got my Korean corndog fix first then took a leisurely stroll down all the aisles. The Good: nice selection of Taiwanese beer, sweet and savory snacks galore, great to have multiple dining options in the food court, staff was very nice. The Bad: Green onions all had brown bottoms, no lychee, the Rambutan selection was low and looked expired and there was an unappealing, pungent aroma at the end of the produce aisle. The Wow: Biggest kimchee section I've ever seen in a store! Overall I'd return on another weekday off hour but seem to remember having a better time at 99 Ranch.

Yelp
Was in the area and the kids wanted some Buldak ramen. The spot is busy but shelves were completely stocked. The store is clean and I was able to find what I needed and more. My kids had been looking for the creamy carbonara and they had it stocked plus more. Definitely a great drop in.

Yelp
Love this HMart location! They have good deals and delicious food. The store is kept pretty clean & all the associates are nice. They also have a small food court and bakery which have amazing food. I highly recommend the bakery!

Yelp
Huge Asian market! Sign up for their rewards program! 1 point per dollar, then when you have 1,000 points; you can redeem for a $10 gift certificate! They also have a food court located across the bakery, "Tous les Jours." Their parking lot is spacious but still gets full most of the time due to the grocery store being located next to 24 Hours Fitness. (Gym). Their customer service is okay, but ALL I have to say is just make sure to double check your receipts prior to leaving! For yesterday's visit, the cashier forgot to remove the Thai Tea off my receipt. It was inconvenient to return to the grocery store and to wait for customer service to assist me. The ambiance of the grocery store is nice! H Mart has several aisles, most of their items are fully stocked and overall the grocery store displays cleanliness & tidyness.

Yelp
Amazing selection of instant Ramen. Literally hundreds of choices. . Full stock of Japanese curries. Yummy Bulgogi, pre-marinaded. What is not to love?
google avatar

Vince B.

Yelp
The Chestnuts I bought at the produce section gave me an allergic reaction. Since then I decided to only buy chestnuts roasting on an open fire from small time vendors. Then my doctor diagnosed me with a tree nut allergy which I never had before. Found out anyone can develop a tree nut allergy at any age. Everything else was good and will come back for a big jar of kimchi next time.

Yelp
really love this location! The cashier was super friendly and helpful, which made my shopping experience even better. I picked up some ginger, kombucha, and sushi--all of which were fresh and delicious. I was especially tempted by the mini crab sushi--it looked amazing, and I'll definitely be back to try it next time! The store has a great selection, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Highly recommend checking it out!

Yelp
Great Korean market with many other Asian foods there as well. Spacious and with large departments. Tons of fresh fruits and veggies, I'm always getting rare finds like mangosteen, lychee, and longan. A nice pickled selection offers many options for kimchi (which actually means "pickled") and more, like pickled garlic. Go wild. They also have all the staples I'm looking for when I need to make Korean or other Asian foods. And there's a restaurant in the grocery store if you won't want to cook!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
I think the quality of items is about the same as 99 Ranch market which is right around the corner, but its just slightly more pricier. Really can't go wrong here. It's a premier store for Asian products and food. They have a great range of items from Ramen & Noodle, Instant & Quick Food, Snack & Candy & Nuts, Beverage & Coffee & Tea & Honey, Rice &Grain Rice &Grain, Paste & Marinade & Sauce, Oil & Seasoning & Canned Goods, Seaweed & Dried Produce & Soup & more. There's an abundance of items that is on sale just for the week. I suggest you check out the website first before heading in person. And if the lines are long (which it can be especially with hot much parking is available and with how spacious it is inside), head to the food court and grab something to eat or to my personal favorite, the bakery section for some delicious goodies.

Yelp
Hmart is pricy, but they have a lot of good quality things. Especially the meats, and a lot of the cold deli items. Their bulgogis, pork bellies, short ribs....I've never been disappointed. I have enjoyed their pumpkin porridge, pork ears, Kimchi, yellow radish, seasoned squid, seasoned dried squid, fish cakes, Soybean soups, short rib soups, vegetable Soybean soups....the only thing I wouldn't get again is the Japanese cucumber salad--way too salty. Produce seems to always be fresh, lots of Korean snacks available. I like the kimchi Mozzarella rice balls, and the mini sweet potato taiyaki from the frozen sections. Small selection of sushi/sashimi at the back of the store. The food court here is pretty good, too. I like Zzang Korean Rice Dogs; and Kyodong Noodle House has good black bean noodles. A bit sad that Bann Korean is gone, their pork belly with rice was fire! FYI, if you don't use your membership card in over 6 months, your points automatically reset.

Yelp
i made kimchi with ingredients from here. this place reminds me of my childhood. kind staff!

Yelp
I love this location way better than Mira mesa I just dislike that the beauty products is not connected to the grocery stores and it has different hours. Other than that the food here is great. They have many good choices and a lot of things in stock for great prices. The store in general is very clean even the bathrooms. Just a great grocery store.
google avatar

Yelp
It's awesome to have such a nice and clean H mart in the community!! Many beautiful Asian products are ready to be sold! Products are nice and fresh! Highly recommended! Come and enjoy shopping Cheers
google avatar

Samyukta S.

Yelp
Pretty underwhelming Hmart compared to other locations I've shopped at. Small, lacks a food court, minimal options, and the fish did not look very fresh. The staff isn't very helpful or friendly - the lady behind the fish counter rolled her eyes when we asked her for the fish to be cleaned and cut. Not the best experience.
google avatar

Cezar S.

Yelp
Staffs are great here. The place is always clean and organized. They have a great Korean food selection, from snakcs to fresh food and frozen items. My wife and I would always go here when we want to have our own samgyupsal at home, rather than in a restaurant. Great amount of different produce items.
google avatar

Yvette R.

Yelp
This store had such a great selection! The grapes I bought were DELICIOUS big , crispy, juicy and sweet!!
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
Smaller food court, but workable. 4 food stands and a bakery inside. The Jaws Express we came to check out is located inside. The banchans and ready made foods don't look as good as some H Marts. They have quite an extensive Buldak variety here and single cup packs too. As usual $0.10 a bag or you better bring your own bag. I don't think to bring a bag when I am traveling for grocery items. They only have off brand huge bottles of sriracha, I mistakenly bought that brand here and it tastes off. Cashiers are cold and indifferent here. Treats you like a transaction only.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Has everything, huge, and really love the food court. It's something we are missing in MN.

MinhNguyen P.

Yelp
They are selling spoiled, molded food! It was not safe for us! I will talk to the manager and get updated for you guys!
google avatar

Yelp
This is one of the best H Marts. Better than OC, better than Mira Mesa, etc. This one just feels clean and wide open inside. The food court is there immediately as you enter. And there's a bakery with cakes and drinks. The produce here is fresh. The seafood is ample. And the service is good. Store is nice and brightly lit too. Parking lot is pretty massive too.
google avatar

Krajicek K.

Yelp
Giving this location a 4-star because of the food court and Tous le jour bakery. The specialty hotdog worthes a try. Not cheap. Was $6+ for a potato triple hotdog but tasted yummy. I usually come here to get the bottled Ito En tea. Good price here. Also it closes late at 10PM! This store looks smaller than the Mira Mesa one, but is very clean and organized. As one of the reviewers mentioned, parking lot is odd. It can get congested when cars are waiting for traffic lights.
google avatar

Jagruti L.

Yelp
This is my first time visiting this location in Balboa. I also visited Mira Mesa and Diamond Bar. All three supermarkets have a different layout. The only thing is the layout is awkward at this location and it sort of feel cramped. They also have an interesting food court as well.

Yelp
How has it taken me this long to discover H Mart? Nijiya is my go to market in the area, because I am typically cooking Japanese food, but after reading Crying in H Mart, I decided it was time to branch out. While H Mart primarily carries a lot of Korean products, they do also have some crossover with the local Japanese markets in providing similar groceries. What differentiates them is their section of meats and banchan. I will say that people overhyped the banchan. I bought fishcakes and kimchi that I did not think was all that great. Maybe it depends on the day that you come but it didn't taste very fresh. What I really loved was the food court area in the front of the market and the bakery. I bought a ton of pastries and ordered gimbap, soondubu and a korean corn dog for my husband who is addicted to them!
google avatar

Yelp
SAN DIEGO, CA / INT'L GROCERIES / 03-22-23 +This H Mart location is huge; aisles are stacked with Korean products I've never seen before in TX, MD, or VA. +There are a lot more product offerings than Midwest/South locations. +West coast beef quality is so much more superior.
google avatar

Shelli S.

Yelp
The food kiosks in the front door area, the baked goods and coffees, so amazzzzingly creatively good! Go in, try something you've never had before. Walk through the mega aisles just turn around do a small part and leave. You can conquer the rest another day. This store is the perfect way to shake up your day
google avatar

Ed K.

Yelp
Great selection of Korean food products. I wasn't looking for such, but mainly came in to remind myself of what they did have. I was here once before, but had more time to explore this time. The fish market was interesting, but did have that slightly "fishy" smell. Fresh fish does not smell fishy (no matter where you go). Was pleasantly surprised to see Vietnamese coffee on the shelf. The salt section shocked me as it's mega-loaded with salt- 3 pound bags! I used to be a salt freak myself, until my high sodium intake led to high blood pressure and a heart attack. The aisle is cool but scary- heart attack aisle! Luckily for me, ridding myself of added salt and taking my meds have brought the blood pressure back to normal. Overall, I'll be back. This is almost the Asian version of.. Walmart??

Yelp
There's not a weekend that goes by that we don't make a stop at our local H Mart. They always have what we need and more. We always try to get there around lunch so everyone can get their favorite Korean dish. This is a must on our weekend check list.
google avatar

Jamal A.

Yelp
The tea that I bought from the bakery store was honestly very tasty and served not too hot. The tea I ordered was the matcha late. It' was sweet and savory at the same time. The service was decent, the worker did have to ask me multiple times for my order which annoyed me but it was okay, still left a tip because the person who made the drink did a great job. The ambiance was great and gives off a "traditional" family outing.
google avatar

Stefany V.

Yelp
I have heard great things about HMart but haven't been to a location til this past weekend. I was visiting SD and drove past this one en route to dinner, and hadn't realized there were locations here. We went twice during our visit - once to grab banchan and hot foods for a meal in our Air BNB, and another visit to load up the car with groceries to take home to Vegas. This location opens with a small food court, which is a nice touch for getting a hot meal at an affordable price. The produce section was well organized with great prices. I really liked the seafood and butcher areas - there's a refrigerator case with sushi and sashimi options, and a small counter with marinated meats good for taking home to cook quickly. The bulgogi here is a highlight and competitively priced. My favorite area though is the prepared banchans. Everything from chili crabs and kimbap to warm buns and fried tofu. If you go later in the evening, there are markdowns, like half priced kimbap. There's also a wall of kimchi to pick from - note a one item limit on imported Korean kimchi, due to a shortage. No issues with service. I didn't need help finding anything but staff in the produce area and at checkout were helpful and prompt. Rumor has it H Mark is opening a Vegas location soon but til then, I'll be visiting with a cooler to load up with stuff and take home.

Yelp
Out of all the hmarts I've been to this one is my favorite. This hmart is quite spacious, so I dont feel cramped in the aisles. The cashiers are fast and courteous. There's a food court inside and I love getting the korean corn dogs here. There's a tous les jours which is a bakery. I haven't tried the coffee here, but it looks delicious. I always get the egg tarts at tous les jous, but honestly everything at the bakery looks delicious.
google avatar

Brandy P.

Yelp
They have a great food court, and the grocery store side has amazing selection of food. A great selection of wildcat fish. A little pricey, but due to the economy, that's understandable. Much better than grocery stores that charge more for farm raised fish. The service is pretty good, and I have always felt welcome when shopping. There's a lot to look at and a lot to choose from, but very organized I took my grandmother who is not from the US and she loved the store.

Jamie L.

Yelp
Great team at Oceanic Dental! Dr. Pham and Traci were very professional, explained everything thoroughly. The patient experience was exceptional. I felt completely comfortable during my procedure. Truly appreciated the friendliness of everyone in the office!

Yelp
nice Asian market. focused on Korean (and to a lesser extent Japanese) groceries. stopped by because 99 Ranch Market which is around the corner and down the street no longer carries the Thai line of bottled sauces from Healthy Boy (their mushroom soy is my go-to). here's a question: why is it Healthy Boy? was Chubby Boy taken? okay. just rechecked the label, and he's not as Buddha-like as I remembered but still ... strolled up and down the aisles, cataloguing inventory for my freaky pantry before checking out the offerings in their food court. I definitely need serious schooling on Korean food. stuffing myself in the meat fest that is a Korean BBQ place poorly prepared me for choosing something good to eat. settled on a ZZanG hot dog because there was a line and it looked like a lunch I could wrap my head around. just because it's popular, doesn't mean it's good. deep sigh. chalk it up to a learning experience, I guess.

Yelp
Visiting from Florida - Never in my life have I seen such a market - almost totally catering to the Asian palate. Immense variety of fresh greens, vegetables, fruit - many of which are uncommon or completely unavailable in Florida shopping markets. Understandably, some items are pricey; some things such as dairy and eggs, every day items can be had at Ralph's (for example) for less. My wife was "All In" at the food court at this specific address. We wandered about wanting to sample something from every one of the options for lunch. She finally settled on an immense bowl from one of the Korean shops, loaded with seafood, shrimp, mussels, and a spicy broth. We especially liked the Korean milk brea offered in the bakery. This extra-light, extra delicious bread is unheard of in Florida. Completely satisfying day! Highly recommended.

Yelp
Your manager told me Hi working 14 hours 7 days a week Bad attitude Because I complained about just 1 guy to help 20 customer's When I complained Hi told to find other stories to buy food Thanks for your help Have good day
google avatar

Yelp
Just had a weird cashier experience. No name on my receipt so unfortunately I can't call out the person, but it was a white woman probably early 20's and her coworker was a Latina woman around the same age. As the white woman scanned my japchae and bean sprouts, she tells her coworker, "it's DISGUSTING." her coworker looks at me to asses if I've heard and hesitantly acknowledges her. Y'all are hiring these unprofessional people who have no shame in their microaggression? Wild.

Tobi B.

Yelp
OMG the grocery store is the jam! We found so much stuff and fresh too. The food court yep the food court you have to go and bring your appetite it's all good I mean really good!!
google avatar

Esther C.

Yelp
Lowkey preferred to eat here than an actually restaurant. Their food court is OP. Their jjamppong was $15 but was gigantic - such great portion of food. That could've feed 4 adults in abundance. I wish I had one in Northern California so be sure to stop by here for Korean food when in SD!
google avatar

Judy N.

Yelp
This place is our go to place in San Diego for live seafood especially LOBSTER! But they have live shrimp, abalone, Dungeness crabs, tilapia so much to choose from. Tanks and tanks of fresh live seafood. Last trip to San Diego I. 2 weeks we must have gotten lobster here 3 times and it's priced so right! It's an Asian Market and it absolutely is convenient to Sharps Hospital near Miramar. We turned our family friends in San Diego onto this place as well and now they send us pics of them dining on fresh steamed lobsters! Produce is exceptional and they have a hot food bar too. If out of town and you like Asian like we do! Go!

Yelp
Love H Mart soooo much!! Before I moved here I visited for a weekend and this H Mart was my first stop - believe it or not!!!! Sometimes you just need kimbap... for me it's more like all the time!! They have a great variety of kimbap and fresh food. I was just there at 8AM though and it was limited - only triangle kimbap, some kimchi varieties, potato salad and 2 japchae containers. I mean it's 8AM so it's not like I was expecting the full menu lol, I'm really grateful that they had anything at all (unlike Marukai at this time!! booo) I like that they put broccoli in the japchae here, my former local market (shout-out to KP in Sac) didn't! The potato salad is super super good and also has a nice smattering of veggies in it. I love the regular kimbap, obviously since I make special trips for it. But I have to say that the triangle kimbap (onigiri style) is a trap, lol. Only rice and meat. I was sad to not see a single veggie but oh well! Thanks for feeding me this morning. Staff is really nice, I had a really sweet cashier this morning! I still need to hit the food court here but Tous Les Jours is a must stop. I won't say too much about them & save it for the TLJ review but you absolutely must go to TLJ when you come here. I'll be back again and again and again... love ya H Mart!
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
I think I heard too much hype on H Mart before finally going to have a better rating. The store was fine, the selection was less than Zion but the location is smaller, so I guess it's to be expected. Maybe I didn't get the right things but I think overall I prefer Zion even though it is a farther drive. Or maybe I'm at that age where learning new store layouts and brands and parking lots make me uncomfortable. Am I that age??? I also hit up the food court area and got some tteok boki which was delicious and spicy enough that I couldn't eat it in one sitting but also still very flavorful. So that place gets 4 stars!

Yelp
Located right off the 805N and Balboa exit, near the 24-Hour Fitness, and across from the Awaken church. The parking lot is a little confusing, but there's plenty of spots. This mart has a food court, bakery, skincare shop, and grocery store. The food court selection is decent, the bakery is similar to a small 85°, the skincare shop has all the latest Kbeauty, and the grocery store has plenty of variety. I came here last Sunday with some family for lunch and afterwards we perused the rest of the mart. We all enjoyed a delicious lunch and proceeded to fill our shopping baskets with items from the bakery and/or the grocery store. The grocery section of the mart was extremely clean and organized; it was the cleanest and most organized Asian mart I've been to. I always forget about this mart and will definitely be back!

Serdar A.

Yelp
This is just for seafood section. Bought fresh sardines and fresh mackerel. Cooked them at home and realized that both fish are spoiled. Wasted $40 worth of fish. I am totally disgusted. They looked fine behind the glass. Go to Costco or even better fish markets in Point Loma.
