Where to Celebrate Lunar New Year in Philly - Eater Philly

"Koreans also give nice boxes of tangerines and persimmons as gift for Lunar New Year. Dried preserved persimmons are also very special. Cho calls them a novelty. “It was the ultimate treat back in the days.” Find persimmons all ways at H Mart. Spam gift sets are also extremely popular." - Diana Lu

If you’ve haven’t been to an H Mart. This market operates on a superior level than your average supermarket. This is definitely a shopping experience. This is an all in one market. It is very large with large selections. The seafood is fresh with live seafood if desired. There is a food court, a bakery and a home section among many other areas. I have enjoyed every visit to H Mart.

Google
My first time here (Front and Godfrey), I was in awe. All of the choices and a good representation of cultural food. I didn't get much but I will visit in the future. Lines were short, making check out fast on a Wednesday. Parking was reasonable as well.

Google
A clean, bright Korean supermarket with a wide selection of authentic foods alongside typical U.S. grocery staples.

Best place for fresh fish, cleaned your choice. Jumbo pomegranate

Google
Large store with large variety products BUT the timeliness of stocking some perishable food items and quality control maybe lacking. Purchased 2 packs of soft tofu with expiration date of Feb 10, 2025. Both had gone bad. The assorted Korean pancakes for $7.99 was tasteless with too much flour as filler and not enough seasoning. Had to throw it all in the trash.

Google
Traveled here and I was not disappointed. Nice market! Plenty of different foods to try. Nice little food court on the side. Cute little Bakery. I wasn't a fan of the rainbow cake but my mom enjoyed her cheesecake. The food was amazing. May be a little expensive for some but definitely worth trying. Definitely planning to travel here again.

Google
Love how it's always stocked, clean and great prices. Plus the food court & the bakery are to die for!

Google
One of the best Asian market around the area. Very clean , spacious , variety of selections , maintained well , well stocked. Prices are normal compared to competitors. Seafood selections are good, home goods are limited selection but grocery , produce , meats have varieties. Some items are bit pricey. Ample Car parking , staffs are attentive and small cute bakery selection , kids play machines , in store restaurant ? . All in all good store to visit over again.

Yelp
Huge selection! Even bigger than my local No1 Asian Supermarket in the northeast. It's also more fresh and due to the higher quality, higher price. They have everything our family usually gets for a Chinese hotpot--even down to the tofu skin rolls. My go to is their whole coconut and lemongrass. Sometimes their lobsters are affordable at $7/lb (June). They have fresh live seafood, frozen, and on ice. They carry a vast range of varieties from Korean to Japanese to Chinese options. Anything you can think of, they'll have it. From black rice to Natto. Probably the largest Asian supermarket in all of Philly haha (don't quote me on it) but I had trouble finding certain ingredients in Chinatown's two most well known grocery stores: Heng Fa & AsianFresh (due to their limited size capacity), such as coconut and lemongrass. No1 Asian Supermarket does have more variety, but it's not always fresh as I've sighed and settled for their molded lemongrass. Hmart doesn't have as large of selection of live swimming fishes as No1 though. Although there's another Hmart in Elkins Park, this one is more large and spacious. I believe I like the food court and Paris Baguette over at Elkins Park better though. Opens 365 days including holidays. Does not do grocery deliveries.

Yelp
This is the best Supermarket by far! Very clean, friendly environment, and many items to find. FISH DEPARTMENT IS ALWAYS ON PAR! Their products are always fresh because their products are always in demand.

Maria C.

Yelp
They always have fresh produce and provide different brand products from different countries. The cashiers as friendly and provide aid when needed. The place produces a fine relaxing experience to not only grocery shopping but to eat lunch here as well. The restaurant section is a great place to try something different as to fast food. Their pastries section is always beautifully clean and well stocked. I recommend.

Yelp
Excellent variety of Asian ingredients and fairly good prices. Not as late as Assi Plaza, but still a great resource particularly if you are in Your area.

Yelp
There are several H-Marts in the area, ranging from somewhat close to pretty close, but the newest H-Mart location is by far the best and cleanest store around. A greater selection, generally cleaner, and more spacious is a few of the advantages the Philadelphia location has over the Elkins Park and Upper Darby ones. (Haven't been to the Cherry Hill one so I cannot comment on that!) Like with any H-Mart, there's also a food court featuring a wide variety of options, and the choices here are also superior. There's a Pelicana for Korean Fried Chicken, a Korean-Chinese fusion spot, a general Korean food spot, and a place to get some tteokbokki. There's also a Tiger Sugar and Paris Baguette for dessert. The Elkins Park location is six minutes away, and that location has its benefits as well. I've heard good things about its food court (although I haven't been in a long time), and it has some more storefronts (including a store that sells some really delicious dumplings.) Both are good!

Yelp
I like #4 on the menu. You can eat in or take out. There is also a bubble tea place inside And 8 places to pick from and a bakery.

Yelp
This is a nice store to explore and discover new and familiar Asian food. The food court is very appealing and the bakery is 1st class. The items I got from there were tasty and presented well. The food inside the store is very expensive in my opinion to the point where I refused to try something new for fear of wasting $5-$7 on a new condiment or food.
google avatar

Yelp
Best grocery ever. They have asian products thats so hard to find in the US. Helpful!!
google avatar

Naomi R.

Yelp
Nice & clean.. organized.. they have a lot of Spanish produce as well. The mini food court in there is AMAZING.. highly recommended. Only 4stars instead of 5 due to pricing.

Yelp
This time around, we tempered our food court ordering and got Bulgogi Fried Noodle from Da Pan (perfectly al dente noodles, crisp cabbage, bulgogi, mushrooms, and scallions, all kept piping hot from the stone serving platter) and Kimchi Ramen from Mari Mari (a zingy, acidic broth), plus another cheese bulgogi inari and an eel inari. We managed to make it through the grocery store portion post-lunch without requiring more than the four reusable grocery bags we had equipped ourselves with. And we got Tiger Sugar boba on our way out: the bestselling #2 (which would've been perfect sans jelly cubes*) and the coffee-laced #4. P.S. If you want gimbap (especially on a weekend day) you'll want to get there earlier still than 12:30PM, as the gimbap table was already empty upon arrival to H Mart! *should've trusted my instinct re the jelly cubes knowing my dislike of jello.

Yelp
Great Seafood. Bought Lobsters, Fresh, sweet and delicious Staff Helpful and food is always fresh

Yelp
Selection here is awesome. Fresh veg and fruit, amazing fish section. Lots of discounted goods to try new things you wouldn't normally buy. Lots of other goods besides food as well. Any spice or ingredient you need for cooking they will have. Also nice food court section attached.

Yelp
H-Mart has the best cafeteria that allows you to try all types of Korean food! From traditional to fusion H-mart has everything! I usually get Jjamppong there! It's my go to Korean stew consisting of a spicy seafood based broth with thick udon-like noodles and shellfish mixed in! The broth is never too salty, just flavorful! The portions are HUGE! I love it! As a fellow Korean, H-mart is my go-to place for comfort Korean food

Yelp
I like H mart. When I was in California went there.same as Michigan. Visit New York went also. Here in Philly wow more than 1 store around. But my friend recommended here. Big and many parking spot. Many restaurants at food court. Size of store is like Chicago, or California! It is big. I love it. But not only I can buy Korea stuff... also buy many other Asian stuff too!! Also it is very important to have big parking place like here! I really recommend here to buy Asian stuff also eat Korean food at food court !

Yelp
Ok - I've been to Hmarts in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Dallas, New York City, Flushing, Chicago and New Jersey but this Hmart is surprisingly probably the best hmart I've been to yet! And I'm surprised it's in Philly! Located not really in a Koreatown (not sure if there really is one around this area...) but I wanted to stop by because... it's Hmart and this place was a delight! The interior looks kinda like a warehouse, but the size would compare to maybe the Johns Creek Hmart back in Atlanta.. the place is very well organized and it looks really modern. Maybe it hasn't been long since they opened... The selections were great and they had a LOT of sales going on which isn't common to see in this era of inflation! I was so surprised at how clean it was along with the sales they were having. Food court boasts of Pelicana, Oh K! Dog, Paris Baguette and other various cuisines that were impressive. Though it's not really in a Korean hub, I was impressed with this hmart and it's the first one that I will give 5/5!

Yelp
There are 3 H Marts in the Philly area but this one is definitely my favorite! The combination of grocer and fresh meals you can buy is amazing. H Mart has a wide selection of Asian foods, many being Korean which has some really good stuff. One of the best things to buy here is the pre marinated bulgogi and the meat Korean snacks that are available. You can also get regular products and things you may find in a typical grocery store. The freezer section at these stores are also really good. You can find frozen meals and unique dishes as well as delicious Asian desserts. The mochi ice creams are always really good. The food court at H Mart is always very enjoyable. You can find basically anything in terms of Asian cuisine. The Korean fried chicken is always solid and options are vast. You can find something for everyone here. This H mart also sells Soju and other Korean alcohol which is a plus compared to the other H Marts in the area. The selection was huge. Highly recommend soju. Overall a great grocery store with lots of unique food options and goods. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I was here trying to get some quick grocery shopping done. I needed to help my baby change a poopy diaper. I can't believe there is a staff inside the only stall that has a baby changing table and was talking on the phone! I ended up changing my baby's poopy diaper near by the sinks in her stroller! Unbelievable how staff just hog the largest stall and the only one with the baby changing table. Sad. I hope that person isn't just talking on the phone but actually taking care of her business.

Yelp
This HMart is amazing compared to other Asian markets in the area. Very clean! The Asian market I was going to stopped carrying a lot of staple Filipino groceries I was so use to buying. At this spot, I am able to find my stuff plus other Asian staple items. The food court is great too!
google avatar

Gloria E.

Yelp
Super organized store with an extensive food court, lots of bakery options, and even fresh fish and sushi. You can find so many types of ramen, frozen dumplings and meals, as well as any type of candy or snack you can think of. Only issue was the sushi being a bit tough with one bone in it but it was still fresh and large for the price. Loved the ramen from Mari Mari but they only give you two pieces of pork.
google avatar

Yelp
Huge and super clean. I've been a fan of Hmarts however even my expectations were exceeded. It really is amazing enough for me to rave about a grocery store! First, the COVID measures are excellent. Temperature checks on your way in. Hand sanitizers everywhere. Free gloves. And everyone had masks on. The selection is top notch. It was easy to get lost in the numerous aisles. The produce, meats, and fish were extremely fresh. Their prices are decent. Their sale prices are great. I didn't have time to explore but this location also has a food court with a good variety of Asian eats. I'll be back!

Yelp
We love H-mart!!!! And we love everything new lol. This location is only about a few minutes closer for us than the Cheltenham one but man it's a world's difference inside. They had hand sanitizer pump and gloves for us to wear while shopping. We really like the new big modern signs and the lay out. It feels bigger than the other location and even has booze!!! We came the weekend after its grand opening and everything inside was neat, clean, fresh, well stocked, many employees working hard, lines went by fast and man oh man the variety of frozen items had me in circles! Not only do they have Korean products but they also have some Japanese goods that I had just the week prior drove xxx miles to north jersey for. My husband grabbed a bunch of ramens and snacks, we love their kimchi, I also loved the freshly prepared foods on the table. I believe we got 2 kimbaps and some teok. I finally found my favorite sempio chosun natural soy sauce here and it was on sale!!! After shopping we perused the food court and finally decided on tofu jjigae and some Paris baguette. We are so excited about this place and the new food court inside, we will def be making more grocery trip runs here!

Yelp
"I would like to share a review about a cashier named Tereza at Hmart on Front St. When she asked me about the bag and I told her I didn't need one as I already had it, her attitude seemed quite rude. Every time I asked a question, her responses seemed somewhat irritable. I don't expect her to be overly friendly, but I believe it's important for a cashier to show respect to customers who are seeking clarification."
google avatar

Crystal T.

Yelp
Nice market they need people in every department that speaks English. It's very frustrating when trying to ask questions and no one in the entire department speaks English!!
google avatar

Caitlin L.

Yelp
So happy with the food court in this Hmart! Besides being a large Asian supermarket with unique, hard-to-find goods, the food court really knocked my socks off. Affordable sushi (3 rolls for $10) & the infamous Tiger Sugar! I really enjoyed my lunch here at this Hmart, & I was only disappointed that I was full & didn't have room to eat more :( There's Korean fried chicken, Korean corn dogs, traditional Korean dishes all in the food court... After eating a nice, hearty lunch, shopping in the large grocery store was fantastic. It would be great if the supermarket was located in a larger Asian populated area; there aren't any other walkable, decent Asian places nearby. But Hmart was a great attraction alone!
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
The supermarket is very big, organized and clean! It was a bit overwhelming at first because the variety of. Products that they have. So if it's your first time, make sure you have designated over an hour to peruse through the entire store! We always end up getting some boba products and of course snacks! We love those yes chips!! They are amazing, flavorful, made out of corn and addicting! NOW FOR THE FOOD COURT! Wowwwwwie. This place has great eats in the food hall. We got wings from the pelicana chicken that was crunchy fried goodness! It came with sweet and spicy sauce that nailed the entire meal! GET IT. Then my husband, the Korean bulgogi on pan fried noodles that was also flavorful, plenty, the veggies were cooked just right. The noodles had a great texture from the absorption of the sauce! I got the classic tofu soup (soondubu) which had some seafood and beef in there along with tofu. THIS WAS AMAZING. It was a cold day, we ate outside and it had me taking my layers off. You can pick the spicy level and I got the original which was not spicy but had a lot of flavor! It also came with kimchi, pickled daikon, side salad and a big bowl of rice! So if you're hungry this is the way to go! There was noway for me to finish everything but I did tear up that tofu soup! It was close to $12 for the meal and well spent! The Paris baguette is like others in their franchise. We always get the peanut butter crunch and choux pastry. The outdoor tables are well spaced but it was unclear if you had to bring in your trays or not. We did just in case someone wasn't going to come around! Check it out!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is big and easy to find things. Things were neatly stocked and there was a massive amount of items.
google avatar

Aeji K.

Yelp
I came here because it's a newer Hmart in the area. I was blown away by the decorations, and overall set up. I felt as though I walked into Trader Joe's and not an hmart. All the isles are well organized and for the most part easy to find. There are lots of cashiers so there's no long wait. They also sell a variety of wines and beers, which is convenient especially when shopping for food. Due to covid, they have lots of hand sanitizer and cleaning wipes. I'm happy that they are providing options for customers to stay safe.
google avatar

Yelp
This a new location recently opened. My son and his girl friend told me about this location that is near thier apartment. I went check it out in October and ws really impressed with the setup. The display and shlefing arranment is appealing and very organized. I usually shoped at the store near Cherry Hill, NJ. This store is like a high-end food market compared to the old stores. There is a food court adjacent to H-Mart inside the same building including my favorite Korean bakery Paris Maguette. They did offer additional promotional items in Ocotober. I will try to stop by whenever I viist my son in Philly.
google avatar

Jon T.

Yelp
This is the best H-Mart I've ever been to. I'm not sure if it's because this was just renovated but it's super clean and is stocked with fresh fish, hotpot ingredients, veggies and frozen items. The store is also super organized and has a fresh feel to it. On the other hand after purchasing your groceries, there is a food court to pick up some quick bites if you're hungry.

Tamara Q.

Yelp
This is an international haven right in the middle of our neighborhood... awesome variety of foods, fresh fish, pastries, you name it.
google avatar

Rosa H.

Yelp
My family and I are a regular at the Elkins Park location. We went to this one to browse and it was sooooo nice! The location is bigger, cleaner, and just so much better. Because of the bigger location, there is a lot more variety and and more options to choose from - seafood, meats, vegetables, fruits, sauces, you name it! The food court was great too! I only tried one restaurant. Kyodong Noodles was delicious. I haven't been able to find a good Korean/Chinese restaurant that served good jjampong and jaijang myun noodles in a long time. Highly recommend! Will be returning to try the other food court foods and to get my groceries here from now on

John A.

Yelp
Best Korean market that I've been to. The food court is great!! The variety of foods and grocery is super impressive.
google avatar

Danyell E.

Yelp
This is the best Asian Market I have been to. They have so many options, fresh produce, nice selections of meats and the fresh seafood options are out of this world. I was in heaven when I decided to check this place out. Not only that but they have a food court and a French bakery inside. If you are in the area go check this place out. Depending on when you go, it can be crowded so I would avoid weekends and evenings if possible. You will no be disappointed and you can find something for everyone. I only picked up a few things when I went but I will be planning a trip on my next grocery haul since I am looking to change some of my eating habits. The prices are reasonable and they have multiple choices of some of the same items at different price points.
google avatar

Whitney L.

Yelp
Such a great place to shop! The place is HUGE and everything is pretty reasonably priced. Afterwards, stop by the food court for some great food! Def worth checking out
google avatar

Pamela C.

Yelp
H Mart has amazing Asian grocery's! Whatever ingredient you need they have! Their food court is a serious winner and has delicious traditional and fusion korean food! The brown bean noodles are so good and a must! The brown sugar boba is amazing as always and has a silky smooth texture! So good.

Michael S.

Yelp
One the best instant noodle selections around. Only place I can find Mi Goreng. Good seafood selection. Great meat selection, hard to find cuts and lots of bones for making stocks. A wide selection of soy sauces, chili sauces, vinegars, oils, and all your Asian specialties. Large produce selection. 50kg bags of rice, many variates ranging from $30 a bag to 99$ a bag for high end specialty rice. Lots of frozen dumplings. Best kimchi selection a round. Not nearly as nice or clean as the front street location. I really wish they would open a large Hmart more towards the main line area or west Chester even. Overall this is supermarket is a must stop for me, at least once a month, to pick up some essential asian ingredients.

Han K.

Yelp
We need compeater to this market. Monopoly is hurting consumers who depend on Asian groceries. There are two H- mart in less than 5 minutes and price is unbelievably high even with current inflation rate.
google avatar

Tiara B.

Yelp
Nice Sunday walk through. More crowded than I prefer but it's HMart, the Disneyland of Asian markets. I love the variety of fruits and veggies. We sat down and had lunch at a few different restaurants in the cafe. I had Mari Mari. Delish!
google avatar

Joy H.

Yelp
I heart H-Mart even if H-Mart loves my wallet more than it loves me. I'm so glad that I have this spot within a short 20-minutes drive from my place to fulfill my needs for Asian goodies. It's super convenient to have a private parking lot at this location unlike the one at Upper Darby. The selection of groceries here is also endless. I love the fact that I could easily find all the condiments, spices, veggies, snacks, and meat for a variety of my cooking needs. Regarding cooking spices, I was floored to find that they even carry some of the Thai snacks and stir-fry mixes that aren't commonly carried at most Asian grocers. What I love the most about this specific H-Mart is that it's super clean and neat. In fact, Marie Kondo must be its owner since the organization of everything is always spot-on tidy. I also love that there's a Paris Baguette as well as a food court inside this location. It's as if H-Mart wants to trap its shoppers with all the mesmerizing options for all things food-related here. I, for sure, haven't been able to spend less than an hour and $$$ there per each visit.

James T.

Yelp
Excellent super Asian grocery store. Had very good deals and a huge variety of groceries. I will be going there more often even though I live 1.5 hours away.
google avatar

Kathy' Anne R.

Yelp
Everything you are looking is there. I love shopping @ Hmart, and the prices are not too ridiculous.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
I would totally recommend this place to someone who wanted to try Korean food or groceries. Everyone was every kind, someone even gave me a free bag for buying a certain item. The bathroom and establishment was very clean. This place has a food court, and has a wide selection of Korean food. The lines on a Sunday was very short and the selection of fruits were wide. They even had sugar cane which surprised me since I've never seen it sell here. Overall it was a really nice experience, and would definitely come back to do my groceries.

Bobby M.

Yelp
This hmart is fricken off the chain, brand new feel and very modern feel to a super market Full blown food court with Korean fried chicken, soon dubu, whatever Korean foods u like, they got there. Think they are opening up a tiger sugar there too For the supermarket, they got so many cuts of meat and prepackaged and marinaded ones for really good prices that u won't get elsewhere. They have a large seafood section but their frozen section is what shines. They have so much good frozen foods that you can pick up Korean corn dogs, a wide variety of dumplings, lots of Asian snacks and drinks, it's better than all the h Marta around and is VERY comparable to the one in Edison. If the food court was slightly bigger, I'd say it's on par with being one of the best in the area. Prices are what I'd expect all other Asian super markets to be. Little pricier than I would like compared to American super markets but I understand that to get these foods imported there's a higher cost, no biggies.

Yelp
A bigger and better Hmart has officially opened up in Philly. Oddly enough it's not that far from the Hmart located in Elkins Park which is only a few minutes drive away. Anyone who has been to the Elkins one will know how small it is and how quickly the store can get crowd so this new one is greatly appreciated. Hmart Philly has everything Elkins has and more. With all the added space, Hmart Philly offers more selection of products and more space to roam around. They have an extended menu of marinated meats, a bigger selection of prepared foods and an extensive seafood sections. They also have a small area to purchase alcohol. Don't get too excited because its mainly domestic beers, the ones you'd see in any regular shop. Hopefully this will change and they decide to stock more Korean or even other asian alcoholic options. There are some kinks they are still working out. An example is where to place certain products. I've been there a couple times and noticed certain products have moved around but I assume this will stop once they get their system down. Also the home and kitchen section are on opposite ends which I thought was a little weird since I would assume they'd be closer together. Like many other Hmarts, they have a food court. This one includes a Paris Baguette counter. A lot of the food here is more contemporary than Elkins. They all deserve a review of their own. Currently because of Covid, the tables are spaced apart and they have outdoor seating. I'm not sure if the outdoor seating will be permanent. My only concern is that some of the food shop employees weren't wearing their mask properly so I'd check that before ordering.

Linh J.

Yelp
Loveee this hmart with many choices of Asian food & fruit. Though I don't usually give our review but experienced the worst experience today with cashier Anny. Her attitude stinks.. wondering why do people go to work if they are so miserable. I guess hmart needs to pay their employees higher so maybe they will be happy to work. :)

Yelp
So much bigger and spacious compared to other locations! Everything you need and didn't know you need is here! Very clean and organized! Unlike other locations, you don't have to maneuver and squeeze your way through. They have a much larger selection of produce, prepackaged marinated meats, a wide variety of seafood. Also a ton of seasonal sale items. The food court has multiple authentic Korean food options to choose from along with a clean seating area. Definitely would be shopping here more!
google avatar

Alfred G.

Yelp
It's massive and has so much selection, definitely must visit for specialty products you can't find even at the other hmarts!
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
This location recently opened but already like it better than the one in Elkins. Everything is very organized and well stocked. There's plenty of parking and other shops around the plaza. It has all you Asian ingredients (mostly Korean) at a reasonable price. I like the little food shops within the store such as Paris Baguette. Definitely worth a visit!
google avatar

Chantell B.

Yelp
Grand opening was yesterday. The store is very clean and spacious. They have a wide variety of Asian grocery items, fresh meat, produce and seafood. They also carry regular grocery items and they have a beer section as well. Over to the side there is also a small food court offering several Korean vendors, noodles, sushi, fried chicken etc.

Yelp
I am so happy that the new H-mart supermarket is opened near by my home. Especially the Asian food cafeteria and Paris Baguette bakery, that's my favorite part. Yummy yummy!
