Habibi Review - Bushwick - New York - The Infatuation

"Habibi is almost uncategorizable as a restaurant. This Middle Eastern pop-up operates in a Bushwick warehouse space, but the interior somehow looks like a lavish hotel conference room. A good chunk of the guests act like they're famous, but neither the Levantine food nor the service is glamorous. And almost half of the meal—including the hookah in the connected bar downstairs—is complimentary. If this sounds confusing, that's because it is. Not in a good way. This pop-up project was invite-only for the first few months (it opened last summer). Its exclusivity, plus a warehouse destination, made the situation ripe for internet stardom. We were not on the invite list. But then the restaurant became open to the public, making it less cool and easier to secure a table. photo credit: Willa Moore photo credit: Willa Moore photo credit: Willa Moore Early virality meant the masses found Habibi. So the only things guests have in common are that they seek out internet-famous places, and they made it past three separate host stands to get inside. First, everyone receives a complimentary glass of Champagne, before taking an elevator outfitted with plants and a man playing clubby music from a portable speaker. It’s odd, yet a little exciting. In fact, it’s the most exciting part of the night. Once you exit the elevator, climb up an additional flight of stairs, and check in one last time, all signs of warehouse atmosphere disappear. Now you're in a carpeted room full of servers wearing suits that look like they were purchased at Spirit Halloween, and guests photographing everything with the dedication of someone who would like to be paid to do so. While you decide which average dips and grilled meats to order off the a la carte menu, you'll get some complimentary pita and a crudités platter that includes a whole unripe tomato sliced tableside. photo credit: Willa Moore For a night that feels shrouded in mystery, the food at Habibi is surprisingly boring and affordable. Starters, like slightly limp fries or dry falafel range from $8 to $14. Mains, like room-temperature kofta and stewed lamb and rice, start at $22. With so many complimentary additions (the bubbles, the pita, the vegetable platter, and baklava for dessert), it's unclear how Habibi even makes a single dollar. It's also unclear how long this pop-up will last. When we asked a server about the future of Habibi, they said they weren't sure. If you end up here because, say, a friend’s girlfriend’s sister made a reservation after seeing Habibi's disco ball on TikTok, dinner will have some perks. The people-watching could be an extreme sport—we witnessed a couple in matching neck scarves eat a lobster tail in complete silence—and you won’t swallow anything horrible. But don't go out of your way to see what this place is all about. Some mysteries are better left unsolved. Food Rundown Complimentary Champagne This is fun. Drinking Champagne in the elevator will be the highlight of the evening. Complimentary Crudités Platter The platter has exactly one whole tomato, a persian cucumber, some radishes, a jalapeño, three peppers, a few pieces of lettuce, and three carrots carved into small balls with their tops intact. The tomato is cut tableside, which is not necessary but gives the staff the chance to tell you that the pale, mealy globe is “farm fresh” even in the middle of November. Complimentary Pita Habibi's pita is good mostly because it's served warm. If it was cold, it might taste store-bought. We'd bet money it is, actually. The Dips A totally serviceable spread with average hummus, labneh, and baba ghanoush. It feels like like the sort of thing a first-time dinner party host might make for a gathering if they were content to wash every bowl they owned. Kofta Fine. A little dry, but well-spiced. Besides, by the time this arrives on your table, you'll be full of dips and “farm fresh” tomato anyway. Complimentary Baklava And Hot Tea This is nice because it’s free." - Willa Moore

Google
Tried Habibi ATX for the first time and it definitely won’t be the last! I ordered the chicken wrap, and it was absolutely delicious—packed with flavor, perfectly seasoned, and super fresh. The wrap was warm, juicy, and satisfying in every bite. Great portion size too. Highly recommend if you’re craving quality Mediterranean street food in Austin!

Google
Mixed Plate was great, comfort food with moist gyro and seasoned chicken. It’s quick, tasty and no frills but I would go back. Fred was also very nice. A gyro would be great here, probably my next thing to get.

Google
My husband and I ordered the gyro plate and falafel side. Let me just say perfection in flavor and presentation. If I had to say anything negative…. I would have liked more feta cheese but that is just a personal preference. The chef was super nice as well!!

Google
Avoid this place, very dry food with very little flavor. Person working there is nice so that’s the only plus. Waste of $15

Google
I ordered the chicken curry over rice. First off, there was no curry over the chicken, it was just plain dry chicken. Secondly, when i bit into the rice, i immediately had to spit it out because it was not cooked at all. It was crunchy like right out the bag. I had to throw it all away. Waisted $20

Google
Very solid Mediterranean food truck surrounded by lots of outdoor picnic tables with good shade. The gyro plate was flavorful although heavy on rice. Good hummus. The pita was moist and served hot.

Google
Very pleasant staff, large and delicious food. The best gyro I've had in Austin, no doubt.

Google
Got the falafel plate, rice was dry but the Falafels were really good.

Yelp
I'll let other reviews speak for themselves. The rice and meat were tasteless. The rice was undercooked and almost inedible. The wait was 10 minutes after my order and I was the only one waiting for food. If you need something, sure. But I'd just get something else. Would buy again if drunk lol

Yelp
Had a gyro wrap and just wasn't good. Tzatkiki tasted like mayo. The gyro tasted like a mayo salad on a pita with hints of meat here and there. Outdoor space was nice and service was fast and friendly

Yelp
Overall this was fine but there has got to be better Mediterranean food in town. I'll start with the positives. The hummus as great! The pita was soft, warm and flavorful. The service was pleasant and fast enough. Now the negatives. The middle eastern sandwich is un manageable as a sandwich. It somehow is too much and not enough at the same time. Everything was just a little bland and didn't ring true as authentic. When I return I'll definitely try a different truck in the park. This one is just adequate

Yelp
I used to order lunch from here during the week, but spend less time in the office. Happily I re-discovered it recently and it was just as good. I had a gyro and hummus. There wasn't enough pita, only complaint.

Yelp
My mix wrap was a total joke and the person working was not very helpful. You can do better.

Yelp
The gyro meat here is quite moist and delicious but the gyro could use more tomatoes or sauces to balance out the fatty taste. The pita was good too.

Yelp
Ate at the Habibi ATX at The Crossover in Cedar Park today. Terrible value, $14 for the tiniest Gyro you will ever find. Meat was lacking, so was the flavor. Place was not even busy and the sandwich was not served hot. Will not return.

Yelp
Service was great. The food was close to terrible and tasteless. It tastes like they just threw everything in a microwave. I only ate half it because I was really hungry.

Yelp
After a sunny day at Zilker, we decided to stop by the food truck park conveniently located outside of the park. Habibi is one of the options serving Mediterranean cuisine. I tired the mixed with falafel and lamb, it comes with a serving of rice, salad and a pita bread. The flavors were good, although the plate was quite small. I wish they would offer sauce for the falafel, they were a bit dry without a dip. Overall, not bad.

Yelp
Food was disappointing and overpriced, got Gyro and I food size was really small, 50% cold salad, 20% pita and 30% lamb, meet flavor was meh, in a positive note, service was fast got my food after 8 minutes, overall experience was meh.

Yelp
I ordered curry chicken, to my surprise, the bowl was def super dry to what I usually consider curry is like. The rice is not flavorful at all. Chicken was dry. Perhaps other food items are better, but not with this one.

Yelp
This spot had fast service and biggest Gyro I've ever had! This was a great quick lunch.

Yelp
I LOVE falafel. This falafel is pretty good but the only sauce I was offered was tsatziki. That and the other ingredients in the wrap were rather flavorless. I suggest they get some tahini sauce. More traditional (in my experience) and MUCH more flavorful. I had to put hot sauce on for flavor. I'll try again if they have different sauce available.

Yelp
Food taste is mediocre, Portion size is fairly small, and I think hummus should be included with a Mediterranean meal, not as a $6 added option.

Yelp
This food truck is located in The Picnic food truck square. Despite the poor ratings, I thought I'd give it a try since there were only a few reviews on Yelp. I got the falafel wrap, which was $9. They charged me an automatic $1 tip, which I did not appreciate. I don't know if they were just unfamiliar with their system, but that definitely docked them a few points for my review. The food itself was pretty standard--the falafel wrap came with 3 falafels, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and tzatziki sauce. It was a bit overpriced at $9 though.

Yelp
We were at the picnic & tried 3 different trucks. The gyro we had from Habibi's was awesome!!! We had the gyro wrap and was soooo yummy! The salad & taziki in the wrap was soooo refreshing on a hot summer day. Highly recommend this truck!!!!

Yelp
The food is overpriced and they were pretty rude to me. Do not recommend going there.

Gigi S.

Yelp
Ordered chicken curry plate and a falafel. Chicken curry was just rice and salad. No curry no chicken. Falafel was more like a mini gyro Live 5 mins from her and food was cold. Rice was hard

Yelp
Ordered the gyro plate. ONE SLICE OF LAMB that's all you get. I queried the server and he flat out said yes, that's all I get. So if you want to spend $10 for rice and half a plate full of iceberg lettuce with very little tomato or cucumber this is the place to go.

Alyse A.

Yelp
Ate here about 30 minutes ago and now sick to my stomach. Do not recommend this place, the chicken looked weird like not cooked, the gyro meat tasted like Italian sausage. Not worth the 31$ spend on 2 sandwiches.
google avatar

Moya S.

Yelp
The Gyro was sooo good! The meat was tender and flavorful, and the pita was warm and soft, topped them off with tziki sauce, onion and tomato, yum!!!!!

Amy L.

Yelp
Gyro wrap and fries... so good! It was a food truck situation. And I wish I had the time to enjoy my food right there. But I had to hit the road and ate quickly in my car but it was so delicious! I'm so happy the guy at Trader Joe's suggested it!

Yelp
Ordered Mix Plate. Portions sufficed but wanted more. Food is light and not heavy. Would eat again.

R H.

Yelp
Ordered the lamb plate for dinner for $11.00 and bottle of water for $2. Got literally 2 small pieces of lamb, some salad on the side and 60% COLD rice!! Will inform friends and family to avoid this food truck! Rip off Bad food and customer service!!

Yelp
Had a chicken wrap here and it was really good. Good portions and an affordable price of $9. The meal was prepared very quickly as well.

Amber V.

Yelp
