Loveeeee Hachi! The sushi is DELICIOUS and there are so many options. Would always recommend. The atmosphere is fine, but it’s all about the food here

Google
Great service, good sized portions and basic tables. We ate at Hachi multiple times throughout our stay and tried multiple different dishes: pork gyoza, seafood spicy miso ramen, triple sushi, dinner bento shrimp tempura with 2 California rolls, hibachi steak, red curry chicken, sake salmon sushi, steak teriyaki, NY Strip Yakitori, boba tea. The beef and chicken were of good quality and we enjoyed our food. We were very happy that they provided large glasses of ice water. The boba was made fresh and not out of a can. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We ate in and did take-out and they did a great job with both. A few things we noted: the ramen had a fried egg (see photo) which is very non-traditional; the salmon sushi was ok but the tuna tasted of lower quality; and we wondered if the chef was less experienced with sushi rolls because they served the California rolls inside out and shorted the seaweed in the salmon sushi plate (see photo) but the roll stayed together. We enjoyed our dinners and would definitely return.

I’ve eaten here in person before and it was good. Got takeout this evening and the special rolls I got were all slathered with WAY too many toppings and soggy… not thrilled…

My family and I were very happy with all of the food we ordered, it was fresh and delicious! Service was a little slow but the staff was friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back!

Google
I was so pleased with my experience at Hachi today! The food was delicious, the portions were quite large, and the service was amazing -very quick and friendly! The atmosphere of the place is also quite nice and calming. We will be back!

Google
Always great food and good service! This place never disappoints if you are getting sushi. The teriyaki bento isn’t very good though

Google
The sushi was solid though the tuna in my spicy tuna tasted a little mushier than I prefer. It was still good, just not the texture I’m used to.

Google
Stopped in for a quick snack while waiting in the area. The tamago sushi was different then other restaurants and really hit the spot. Uni on the menu was a nice perk and found was overall excellent and properly priced. I look forward to come back

Yelp
Solid place for sushi in this part of CT. I felt a little rushed by the server but I was otherwise happy with the quality of the food.

Yelp
The food & service were great. The ambience was not. Highlight the fresh sashimi tuna & salmon and the spicy tuna rolls. Rock shrimp appetizer was indeed a rock. Tasty but on the tougher side. Chirashis in my opinion should have more sticky rice than what we experienced. Eel avocado - avoid. Felt like an eel avocado marmalade. Out of control special roll - too much out of control. It felt like eating poke bowl bites. But I guess that's what it is out of control ‍... Will come back for straightforward tuna and salmon sushi and sashimi. Based on the selection of the area it is probably no1 in that part of Middletown, in my book.

Yelp
We're not from this part of CT but have tried this place a couple of years back with a couple who lives in town. Now I couldn't remember if I liked it because of the food or the company, but my fiancé and I decided to venture back. We were bored of the sushi places around us and wanted some new combination of specialty rolls. I have to say, we were quite impressed with the selection. AND, prices were really great. My salmon skin roll was just $5!! It's my favorite roll ever so anytime a sushi restaurant has it, it's already gained a bit of my heart. I also got the mango roll which has lobster salad, shrimp tempura, and avocado, all topped with mango. Boy was it delicious! The rolls were pretty filling too. My fiancé got the sexy lady and philadelphia roll and both were pretty decent sized and looked very fresh. No complaints here. I also had the fried brussel sprouts to start and was quite happy that that was an option. It was quite a drive for us, but we may come back more often. Shoutout to our great friend Joe for introducing us to this place three years ago!!

Yelp
We've been to Hachi before and love their sushi. This time we found an entire meal of non sushi items. Two that really stood out were the tuna bites and the sticky ribs. Every component fit together to produce an excellent taste. We also had the fried calamari -always a risk as often they are overcooked and rubbery. These were cooked perfectly and the dipping sauce tasty. Just a little too much batter. Staff is friendly and attentive and the prices fair. Look forward to going back.

Yelp
The food was great and the staff were very friendly! We were in Connecticut because of school tours and decided to find a local sushi restaurant. There were many selections on the menu from basic to specialized sushi rolls, hibachi, sashimi, and noodles, so you shouldn't worry about not having enough options. The owner was very sweet and gave us recommendations on places to visit nearby. Would recommend!

Yelp
Hachi has a huge menu with both sushi bar and cooked food options. Their prices are high compared to some of their neighbors but their fish is fresh and very flavorful!! My biggest dock on stars is that Hachi's cooks just don't pay attention. If you modify your food they might get it right, might not. We ordered scallop sushi, gluten free, and the chef decided to put on a wasabi yuzu sauce (contains gluten due to the soy) without that being a normal thing. When we called the restaurant to ask for money back, they wanted to come to our house to take the food away so we didn't get sick?!?!? Anyways, good food, terrible service, I'll be staying away for quite some time (if not never going back)
google avatar

Yelp
such an awesome experience. Everything was delicious. We ordered some specials. And we got the out of control roll and then had a monkey roll. Delicious. The special oysters were amazing. And a special Mojito rainbow roll absolutely delicious.
google avatar

Allie K.

Yelp
I don't recommend going to Hachi if you have allergies. I stand by saying they are knowledgeable about allergens, but they simply don't care. They'll tell you the ginger dressing has gluten in it, and then still put in on the salad, and laugh at you if you question it. Skip it for allergens. Otherwise, it's good.

Yelp
We've been here twice in the last month and both times were fantastic. The fish is so fresh, the salmon sashimi melts in your mouth. They have unique rolls and many other offerings. Kind and gentle staff who are gracious toward our baby!
google avatar

Jesse A.

Yelp
I have to give Hachi the edge for the best sushi in Middletown. It just always tastes so fresh and flavorful with good portions. The special rolls are creative and delicious. They serve Thai food here as well but I can't imagine NOT getting sushi whenever I come here. Besides that, the menu is what you'd expect from a Sushi place in a college town, selection and price-wise. I've both eaten in and gotten take out numerous times and the service is always fantastic. Timely and very polite. It's cozy inside, well lit and decorated...uh... like an Asian restaurant. It's not a huge space and can get pretty full on a busy evening. You've got four choices for sushi within about three blocks on Main St Middletown. If quality of the sushi is your #1 criteria, make this your stop!
google avatar

Allison K.

Yelp
Terrific food and service. We are sushi gurus and we absolutely loved this place! The rolls are inventive and unique but I didn't find one I didn't like. Decent sized place very clean and nice inside. Try it out!
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
I've never disliked a sushi restaurant until now. The food is awful - from the miso soup to the suspect fish for the sushi. In addition, they do something strange with their soy sauce - I think they add water and maybe a little sugar as it didn't taste quite right and ruined the sushi.
google avatar

Anika T.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall in a college town. The sushi was super fresh and the staff was attentive. The service however, was super slow and our sushi took forever to come to us. All of the rolls we had were very good. The fish was fresh and flavorful and the brown rice was a nice option to upgrade our sushi to. We had miso soup. Seaweed salad and the side salad that comes with it. The portion sizes were average. Parking is on street with meter. They do take credit card

Yelp
Great place for sushi in town! Every visit I've been met with exceptional service and quality food. 5 stars! Get there when you can!

Yelp
Went here on a date, which originally was planned for the Forbidden Llama right across the street. Long story short they were blasting music and I couldn't even hear myself think so I walked across the street to find Hachi. It was quiet with a nice atmosphere. I ordered the Maggie roll and now it's my go to order so GOOD! the food comes out quick and the options are plentiful.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was amazing. PERIOD. Today I ordered one of their special rolls. The Junbo Lobster Roll to the exact. Blew me away, we were fighting for each one. It was so simple but I don't know what it was. It was just so good. Maybe I was just that hungry. The lobster had that nice chew that lobster has but it was so light and the tempura was flakey as well. The flavors were all there as well as the quality. I had a bento dinner which came with a wonderful miso soup and house salad. I went with the chicken and steak teriyaki bento dinner. First off the steak was cooked perfectly and the chicken was really flavorful. The sweet potato, shrimp and broccoli tempura topped it off perfectly. I would have ordered that by itself it was so good. My girlfriend ordered the chicken hibachi dinner and she loved how nothing was overpowered by sauce and I'll be honest, it came with the best hibachi fried rice I have ever had. PERIOD. Our service was quick, friendly and attentive. Just how I like it. Hachi has went above and beyond all expectations. I have never had a bad experience here and I don't think that day will ever come. That hibachi fried rice though. PERIOD.

Yelp
Have been going here for years and have reviewed before. Lately food has been inconsistent. Ate there last night and I know there were a lot of us. Food was ok but my Harumaki tasted like fish. While I eat shrimp tempura I don't want my spring roll to taste like that. Most of my family do not like fish so most of spring roll wasted. I should have made them take it back. How does a pork Japanese spring roll end up tasting like fish. Was it fried in oil used in frying fish. That's just not right.

Yelp
Came to Middletown for my daughter's college visit, definitely was not planning on eating Japanese food (live in SoCal). The salmon avocado rolls were very good, fish and avocado were fresh, could have used a bit more rice but it didn't really detract. The ramen was good too, broth not too salty. Interesting that they put in a fried egg rather than shoyu marinated hard boiled egg, but it was actually worked nicely. I would definitely go back if I am ever in Middletown.

Nancy M.

Yelp
Very happy with our first visit to Middletown And hachi. We went there on the streets of these Yelp reviews and they were accurate. The sashimi was excellent, particularly the salmon, and the Pad Thai was just right. So many places over sugar that.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent Sushi. The service was quick. Small restaurant. Its a good little place for sushi that is affordable.

Yelp
On a cold and VERY rainy night we decided to go to Hachi to celebrate a friend moving to a new apartment. Her suggestion in a place. Honestly was mediocre at best. Pretty place inside but I'm here for the food. Things took forever to come out. This was a table of 5 people and the restaurant wasn't half full. My noodle dish was more of less forgotten about. Food was decent but can't say allot more for it. There are plenty of sushi houses in the area so I will label my experience here as forgettable.

A B.

Yelp
Went to this recommended place but though it smelt & looked authentic, the meal was disappointing - especially after experiencing no bad meal in Japan, even from the most nondescript street vendors. Liked the ginger dressing for the lettuce but they had just glopped it on, to the point that it dripped all over the table even before started eating. Server was polite & attentive but didn't think it necessary to clean the mess before setting down the next course on top of it. Lemon wedge for the water was old, dry, not a drop of juice. The poke bowl looks good but was sadly tasteless, even the fish (don't know how that's possible). Rice at the bottom wasn't properly mixed so there were unseasoned globs. And the cucumber was multiply bruised, discolored, & tasted stale - surely the kitchen shouldn't put forth food that belongs in the bin!

Yelp
This place is more geared to take out. Service for dining is extremely slow. The people running the place are extremely unkind. Here is what they did to me. I left my wallet at home, 10 minutes away. Rather than allow me to pay from home via phone, they made me leave my elderly mother, 5-year-old daughter, and an infant while I retrieved my wallet. I grew up in restaurants in the South End of Hartford. There is no food that is so good that it is worth eating at a place run by such ignorant, unkind, buffoons. I will stick with Mikado and I truly hope this place closes. I left a hefty .01 tip to let them know it. I just found this out, while I was out retrieving the wallet, the restaurant served the kids ice cream, changed the bill out, and didn't tell me. The police should shut this place down. They are crooks.

Yelp
I've never seen a sushi place climb up to one of my favorites in the area this quickly. It started with happy hour whenever I'd wait out traffic from Middletown to Hartford. Now I try to convince as many people to come down as possible. Sushi here is very high quality! When my friends and I came to order a sashimi dinner, I was savoring every piece and truly enjoying the flavor of the fish. If sitting near the sushi bar you can see the sushi chefs working hard to plate and cut all the fish, and it all comes out stunning. Additionally they have unique combinations for special rolls. I don't know if I ever would've tried a roll with mango salsa before coming to Hachi, but I can say it now and it's surprisingly delicious. My favorite roll that I've gotten every single time here is Hawaiian Tango Roll. It's got so many tropical flavors it truly made me think I went to Hawaii (and I've never even been there). I definitely need to come back and try them all. Great spot in Middletown. Plus if you get the Groupon there's deals in that as well. Highly recommend for delicious sushi and food.

Yelp
I have nothing bad to say about this place. The outside looks nothing like the inside. I was surprised by how clean and nice it looked on the inside. The waitress was nice. Service was fast although it wasn't packed at all. It was a Monday around 1pm and there was one other table occupied and several orders picked up. I had the: Out of control and Philly roll with miso soup. All of that was GREAT! Like I said, nothing bad to say. Would I return? Absolutely

Yelp
Very delicious! The King Yellowtail was incredibly tender and flavorful. Both the preparation and the quality were outstanding. The fatty salmon was okay, still quite yummy, but not on the same level as the King Yellowtail. They have a huge variety of rolls so it took a while to narrow down the selection. We ended up with the Mango roll, Amazing Torched roll, and the Cherry Blossom roll. The mango was perfectly ripe and very sweet, a tasty treat for a hot summer day. I would definitely order this one again! The cherry Blossom roll was nice but the fish was slightly less tender than we expected, perhaps because we had been so blown away with the Yellowtail prior to trying it. The Torched roll was a little bit messy and difficult to eat without everything falling apart, but the flavor was interesting! It was unlike anything I've ever tried. All in all, some of the items could have been executed a little better, but I was quite impressed with the menu and most of the items we ordered. I will likely return to try more of the menu; I would recommend Hachi for birthday dinners, date nights, or takeout.
google avatar

Irene G.

Yelp
Hachi is absolutely my favorite Japanese restaurant near the area! I went to Hachi for their lunch special. The amount of food I got really worth what I paid. The service and the quality of food was beyond my expectations. Sashimi tasted very fresh and I really enjoyed my lunch. I highly recommended Hachi to everyone.
google avatar

Yelp
To finally found a good sushi place in the Hartford area! The food was delicious and fish were flavorful. Would be 5 stars but the service was slow. We went there on a Saturday night and they were super busy and our waitress forgot to put in our rock shrimp appetizer. I'm addition, The fatty tuna was market price and almost twice the price of the salmon, but the salmon tasted better.
google avatar

Dave P.

Yelp
We have tried lots of sushi. This became top of our list for local CT we were here for lunch special which was amazing deal. We saw lots of different dishes and they seemed excellent so we will be back. The salmon inside the rolls was not smoked which is a big difference for my wife.

Tabitha D.

Yelp
This is my favorite place. I would go here for every meal. the staff are incredibly nice, the food is all delicious, i've never had anything bad there. the fish is good quality and the restaurant itself is very nice, clean, and bright, with plenty of space and tables. you can always get a table, and the food is delicious! Their lunch special is also great value.

Pasta T.

Yelp
I was watching YouTube vloggers do 40 piece sushi Mukbangs and it got me craving for Maki. Pre-rona I had sushi back in Medford MA but since moving to CT I make it myself. Today I wanted "ready done" meaning dial & order. While looking up the best rated sushi establishments in Middletown I learned that Hachi means "8" and I appreciated the thought that was put into naming the restaurant "Hachi". It was easy to find since it was right near two other spots I've reviewed prior: Typhoon Thai & Pokemoto Salads. Hachi was empty at 2:30pm for a Thursday lunch. The staff were kind and the first thing I noticed was the safety precautions taken to keep customers and staff safe. Hachi even provided mask for sale. I ate my rolls in the car because that's where I feel the safest besides being at home. The rolls were warm, flavorful, and I really enjoyed the thinly sliced pink ginger. I forgot to ask for no tobiko on the Salmon Tempura roll. Both rolls were so delicious but Tobiko is too much adventure for me. The mango rolls were my favorite with the sweet tender fruit tiles on the top of the roll. I wish I bought 2 rolls of it but it was already $13 not including the Salmon rolls. CON: My stomach is bigger than my wallet PRO: My lunch was delicious & I would order again with Pad Thai noodles next time.

Tina S.

Yelp
Hachi is by far the best Sushi around (even better the other local establishments). The fish is always fresh. The specials are unique. Maggie is awesome and runs a very consistent and quality establishment.
google avatar

Jamal J.

Yelp
Excellent value on the lunch sushi special! The quality of the sushi is very good and it also comes with a soup or salad. The interior of the business is very nice , and the staff very friendly. I would return to this establishment again.

Ryan C.

Yelp
Tempura was excellent Sushi was fresh Place was clean Beer was cold Service was good

Cai F.

Yelp
Delicious sushi, exquisite presentation, and reasonable prices. We ordered four rolls, all of which hit the spot, but the Hachi kaze roll was the standout. The ingredients were in perfect harmony and the crunch of the almonds was such a spot on textural contrast. As soon as I finished the roll I was dreaming of enjoying it again. The asparagus pumpkin tempura roll was my second favorite. You can't beat the tempura crunch and warm, creamy pumpkin. The sushi here is light on rice and everything has a simple, clean taste. It stands in contrast to places that bulk up rolls with rice, go heavy on the vinegar seasoning, and incorporate saltier ingredients. Nothing wrong with that style, but what they're serving up at Hachi is something else! Something special for sure!
google avatar

Margarita S.

Yelp
Came here for their lunch special. Definitely the better sushi place in town in terms of taste. Service is good as well. Ambiance is alright but the quality of the fish is definitely better here than other places in Middletown. Will be returning to try some rolls off the dinner menu!
google avatar

Brittany P.

Yelp
Went to Hachi yesterday and it was fantastic. We are not from the area and did a quick search on Yelp to find them, we were very happy with our choice. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly and the food was delicious. I got the Hawaiian Poke bowl and it was the best poke I have had that actually isn't in Hawaii. We also had our kids with us who loved the kids bento box. The fried veggies were a unique and delicious display for the kids meals. Our sushi was also fantastic. I felt like with the amount of food we got the prices were more than reasonable. Clearly a family owned business as their young boys were helping out as well, which made me happy to support also. Thanks Hachi for a great meal!!
google avatar

Charisse H.

Yelp
I have been here several times and will continue to come back. Sushi is one of my fave in CT. Today's visit, staff was super friendly. Made sure we both enjoyed our rolls. My four stars are only because my friend was not too happy with the facilities when he tried to use the bathroom. Also I get it, to an extent, but was not happy I could use my Groupon since it's for "dinner only" despite my food costing the same whether it was lunch or dinner. Sushi prices are sushi prices ‍...welp, guess that just means I'll be back again!
google avatar

Sasha B.

Yelp
I was looking for a while for some decent, fresh and enjoyable sushi. I almost gave up and then I've tried sushi in Hachi. So far this is the best sushi that I've tried in Connecticut, I'd recommend it to anyone who's craving for sushi! One thing that I really appreciate about them is having NOT smoked salmon in the sushi! Also they have good lunch specials!

Mark T.

Yelp
We need to thank Yelp for leading us here. We saw some excellent reviews and we skeptical. But they were right -so many if the reviews were right. This is possibly the best sushi in Connecticut. Thia is an unassuming restaurant in downtown Middletown. We were impressed with the expansive menu including daily specials and unique rolls and appetizers. Our first indicator that we were in a great place were the tuna bites. They were beautifully presented, a nice spice and crusted with candied pistachios. Each of our rolls were excellent and generous. A shared grilled asparagus side dish was excellent with a unique mustard miso sauce. I can't wait to return.

Edward B.

Yelp
Maggie Roll is to die for! Named after the owner. This place is the real deal for sushi. Also, my favorite place for Seafood soup, clear broth, packed with seafood and assorted veggies, tasty broth. The dining room is smallish but with personality.
google avatar

Gene W.

Yelp
We've had some good fish here, and will be coming back again! My only complaint would be is their rice sometimes isn't up to par--probably because it sits too long at the wrong temperature before it gets put into their rolls and nigiri sushi, so they fall apart. My recommendation is to order sashimi for takeout, and cook your own rice at home to go with it. I admit I am spoiled--I have a nice Zojirushi rice cooker and a vast pile of Tamaki Gold rice, the standard for good Japanese restaurants world-wide. My order this last week was exceptional--each piece of sashimi was cut beautifully and they all tasted great.
google avatar

Adam M.

Yelp
Our go to place for Sushi family dinners. Everything is fresh, Kani salad! Sushi rolls are all good too.
google avatar

Bunny D.

Yelp
Sushi was surprisingly good. I'm a native Japanese. Sushi rice and fresh seafood is essential to good sushi. I was somewhat skeptical, but I highly recommend this place. The owner chef is trained in Nobu NY. That explains. Just one thing - please clean up the window junk like dead flowers. That is the reason I'm giving 4 stars.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
We had the place to ourselves and it was perfect for our small party. The food was exceptional from the presentation to the flavors. The teriyaki was served piping hot off the hibachi. This is my second visit and this place remains a favorite In Middletown for me.
google avatar

Kari A.

Yelp
Up until recently, we've been loyal fans of a different sushi restaurant in Middletown. Unfortunately, our regular favorite's lunch prices went up by a few dollars in the recent past so we decided to give Hachi a try. I'm glad we did! Sushi was fresh, order was correct, rolls were good. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the side ginger salad. It was mostly white iceberg lettuce and one piece of tomato and one cucumber. It was not the fresh greens in the picture on their Yelp page. But other than that we all liked our maki combo lunches and would definitely go there again.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Fail! First of all, the food was great. But the wait was so terrible. We ordered online through the restaurant's website that gave a reasonable time the order would be ready. Ok cool... 1 hour and 10 minutes after the pick-up time (standing in the restaurant still) the food finally was ready for pick up. A line of other patrons there to pick up their orders were screaming furious, planning a humorous hostile take-over of the take out counter. And all of this standing around in-restaurant dining maskless patrons. We overheard one employee say to a patron "oh we canceled all the Door Dash orders tonight," and apparently they never notified the patrons. I mean, WTF! I can only guess I was lucky because I ordered direct from the restaurant's website. It is very disappointing the management of this restaurant was so in shambles tonight. I hate bashing a local eatery during the hard-to-survive-times-of-the-pandemic, but they were apparently just so overwhelmed with business they just couldn't perform--reasonably. But the food was great. It will be a long time before I'd give this place another try, and I'll just have to clear my schedule to do so.
google avatar

Adrienna Y.

Yelp
I know it seems uncanny to praise a pork dish of all things at a sushi place but you really really have to try their sticky ribs. I, too, was skeptical, but BE-LIEVE ME. These ribs will be the most tender, fall-off-the-bone, delicious things you put in your mouth! I also really appreciated that these were lightly fried and had somewhat of a "crust" before being lathered with their secret sauce. MM-MM-MM. Aside from their sticky ribs, Hachi also serves some fantastic sushi. This time around we went with the oysters, scallop sashimi, fatty tuna sashimi and the 28piece sashimi platter. Everything was extremely fresh. I liked the fatty tuna the most in particular. The marbling on it was pristine. Eating it only confirmed that what I was seeing wasn't a trick of the eye or great lighting. Our sashimi platter was a grand sight to behold as well and had a ton of variety. If you're ever looking for a great sushi date spot, Hachi would be at the top of my list. The chefs go to great lengths to present dishes that are just as pleasant to look at as they are to eat. Since it was cold out, we also tried their shrimp tempura udon. The broth was clean and delicate and the udon perfectly al dente. The bowl was topped with shitake, naruto, and spinach. They ended up grilling our shrimp instead of tempura-ing it, but they remedied the situation by offering a side of freshly fried tempura. Hachi may be small and unassuming, but don't let their humble storefront fool you. There are gems abound waiting inside!
