"Hackbarth's has been a reliable presence on the corner of two of Mitte’s prettiest streets since just after the fall of the wall. The Augustraße bar entices you in with its quintessential Berlin utilitarian glamour—a velvet curtain-draped doorway, a gold bar that blinds you in the sunlight, and all the old-school, laidback charm of a glass bottle milk float. The countertop is marble, the drinks list is endless, the regulars are chatty, and even the coffee is strong. Hackbarth’s is where we go when we can’t decide whether we want an espresso or a pilsner, and we stay long enough that we get both, followed by a campari spritz because the man in the corner reading a newspaper who looks like he was born here is drinking one.
