The Best Restaurants to Try Between Los Angeles and Palm Springs | Eater LA

"Travelers have been visiting Hadley Fruit Orchards since 1931. Located a stone’s throw from the Cabazon Outlets and famous dinosaurs, Hadley is beloved for its milkshakes, cakes, bars, and cookies made with locally grown dates. (Nut mixes and vegetable chips from the market side won’t hurt to grab to snack on during the rest of the drive, either.) While there, skip over to the Cabazon dinosaurs for a quick hello to a brontosaurus." - Mona Holmes

I drive from Phoenix to LA and back quite a bit and Hadley’s is always a must stop! I still remember when they were in the building behind the new storefront as a kid. Their date shakes are top notch, the store is constantly clean, and their selection of snacks is unbeatable!

Google
This is not your grandparents Hadley's. It is bigger, cleaner and full of not only your grandparents favorites but also new and improved items. Beverage section has everything you may want. It is not limited. Plus it has lots of old time favorites. There is an attached café serving sandwiches and the all time favorite date shakes. Tried the banana date shake and it's my all time favorite now. Bathroom is open, big and CLEAN!

Google
What an amazing store! An incredible variety of foods, nuts, and treats. I got my mom a salad dressing there that is now her favorite dressing. Very reasonably priced. After shopping, I had lunch there. They have your basic deli sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, pizza and the like... but the best part are the date shakes. Wow, delicious! And I'm not a date fan. Well worth stopping off for one on your way through town.

Google
OMG the date shakes are amazing! And the store is great - lots of amazing products. We got candied orange peel, date nut bread, and date cookies. Take a few minutes to look around; it's worth the time.

Google
This is a cool place with a lot of really niche items came for the beef jerky. The orange pepper teriyaki is so delicious if you haven’t tried it you definitely should. This is also the home of the date shake 10 out of 10 totally recommend it’s not too sweet and is made fresh. The service is great, and the staff is knowledgeable. The location is clean and plenty of parking. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Some of the things are a little pricey, but they do have plenty of cool things to look at.

Google
Stopped by to try out their date shakes and it was a nice tasty treat to have after our meal. Kept us cool while being outside in the heat of summer too. We tried the original with strawberry mix in and the banana one. Both were delicious and didn't taste too sweet. There's little bits of the dates in the shake but overall the texture was smooth. The consistency of the banana one was thicker but that's to be expected. Would love to stop by again when we're in the area

Google
This cute shop was a nice stop on my route from San Diego to Las Vegas. I decided to try the ChatGPT-recommended date shake. Unfortunately, it ended up being too sweet for my taste, and the texture was a little harder than I expected.

Google
I used to go to the old store, starting back when I was a child. Thus current Hadley's I've avoided but for no good reason. Today, while having lunch in the area, I walked over to check out the store. Loved this (new to me) store which has a casual eatery on site and public restrooms. Dining tables are provided both indoor and out. Looks like they are still making the date shakes. The store was full of so many interesting things that I hated to leave but sadly my husband was rushing me. I WILL BE BACK! Some things can be purchased online and shipped!

Yelp
It's true what they say about the date shake. It's a must get It's just really freakin rich and delicious Nice cold shake as you drive in to Palm Spring

Yelp
5/5 stars for the shakes. Best date shakes ever! Everytime we've come here, the thickness/sweetness is always consistent. The store has so many unique food items so you'll def be in here browsing for a minute. Love all the different honeys, jams/jellies. Dried fruits etc As for service in the restaurant.... 1/5. The food was ok. Maybe it's what we ordered. Mini pepperoni pizza and vegetarian sandwich. Mini pizza tasted like frozen pizza but the crust was good. The veggie sandwich was bland. There's a condiment table so you need to put your own mayo, mustard etc. even w that, it wasn't fantastic. Great place to swing by before/after your trip to Palm Springs or just going to the outlets. If you like to gamble, it's right next door to Morongo casino!

Yelp
Famous for their date shakes! I decided to stop by in search of local honey. Not quite what I was looking for but I purchased some anyways. Picked up a lil wooden honey swizzle thingy too aka a honey dipper. Cute little store. I like that they offer all things dates and a variety of other groceries. I purchased the date bar for its simple straightforward ingredients. It tasted fresh baked. Rolled oats on the outside with a layer of creamy date filling. Nom nom nom- 5 stars for the date bar and the service. The ladies I interacted with were very nice and helpful, especially the one working the at the register. I resisted the urge to try the date shake but I spoke to a young man who said it was a bit on the sweeter side but good!

Yelp
I never knew this was like an organic dried fruit type spot with the best date shakes I've ever tasted. Modern but well put together location, few employees but great service .

Yelp
If you happen to be near Hadley's, you absolutely have to make a pit stop. Their date shakes are absolutely fantastic, especially on a scorching day. Their selection of nuts, dried fruits, and snacks are perfect for a road trip. We grabbed some dates and had a light dinner for the remainder of our journey home. The Panini was delightful, and my son loved his pizza. The seating area is pleasant with plenty of tables, and the place was tidy, well-stocked, and incredibly welcoming. 4/29/24

Yelp
Reminded me of Porto's chain. Smelled delicious and I got a taste of the date shake which was sweet and yummy. Thank you to my friend! I bought for $1.25 corn nuts too! I love corn nuts. One of my favorite snacks. I'll try them later! The ambiance is clean like sprouts grocery store.

Yelp
This is always a favorite stop on the way to California. Hadleys has been around since before I was born! They make a wonderful Palm Springs style date shake. In recent years they have added other flavors of date shakes and they even have a vegan version. I got the regular and the peanut butter one. Okay, so I love peanut butter but wow this one is super duper peanut buttery! I advise you guys to order it with half their normal scoop so you can still taste the dates in the shake. I love the original date shake and always will, it's creamy , milky , sweet but in a natural way from the dates and it just tastes like heaven on earth.
google avatar

Yelp
Can't speak for the fruit, didn't see any of it there fresh. I can tell you the sandwich from the cafe was the most dry sandwich I've ever eaten, probably on par with my top 5 worst sandwiches I've had. It didn't taste fresh at all and the workers were kind of unfriendly. Both of us couldn't finish what we ordered. The store itself is kinda cool. Beef jerky, candy, souvenirs, lots of drinks and snacks. It was like a big gas station without the gas. Probably won't be back unless it's for a bag of licorice before we go to the mall.

Yelp
Did you know there are 600 types of dates in the world? I didn't know till I did a bit of research for this Yelp review of my Banana-Strawberry Date Shake I had from Hadley Fruit Orchards store. Check in to Hadley's on the Yelp app and receive a free mix-in. I chose to add strawberries -note it's syrup, not real strawberries. I was hoping for fresh strawberries. Large shake will cost around $5. Shake wasn't overly sweet. Date flavor was subtle. Banana and strawberry flavoring taste a bit artificial. Free large parking. Picked up a date shake on the way back to LA and there was already a bit of a line at around 11AM -although the line moved quickly. Service was direct no frills. I had to wait for a manager to override stuff on the computer for the free mix-in when checking in to Hadley's on Yelp. *Palm Springs grows the Medjools and Deglet Noor type of date, if you wondered too. Deglet Door means "date of light," in Arabic. Online sources say 90%-95% of dates grown in the USA come from the Coachella Valley.

Yelp
The best date shakes! I love the vegan version too and so does my 9 month old son. The selection is outstanding and I just love exploring all the interesting delicious food and beverage items there! It's fun! The prices are reasonable and the service is friendly. This place has been around for quite some time and is really a staple for the inland empire. The cafe was very clean and I got a bagel sandwich that was delicious. I've never had a bad day at Hadley's
google avatar

Yelp
Very interesting store. They have a large selection of dates, nuts and candy to choose from. I like how they have various souvenirs and indoor decor. Everything here is neatly organized and prices are displayed and easy to find. On the left side there's a deli where you can order some food and their famous date shake. With a help check in you can redeem an extra topping with your date shake purchase. The small shake is $4.49 and with a half dollar more you can get a medium shake for $4.99. We opted to share a large date shake $5.49 which was delicious. Mix of fresh milk and dates. Yum!

Yelp
I love this place. When driving from Arizona to California or vice versa, it is a great place to take a break. There is a lot to see, a restaurant and lots of goodies to go. I find it a very relaxing spot to stop. To me, Fruit and Nut stands along America's highways are as Americana as it gets! There is a nice (small) restaurant that serves up better fare than the fast food restaurants in the area, if you have the time. They always seem busy. Oh and those date shakes are something to try. The store itself has a few souvenirs and lots of nuts, fruits, candy and you name it! I like the variety selection of nuts and fruit. If you like dates, there is every kind you can imagine. I found a variety tray with cashews, walnuts, pecans and almonds coated with date sugar. Yum! I also found some Australian chocolates with a freeze dried honey center. Last, they have a counter where you can ship ll of these goodies to friends and family. Whats not to like. Hadley really does have something for everyone!
google avatar

Julie N.

Yelp
My first time here although have passed by many times. Surprised they moved from the original location to a "grocery-store" type building next to the original. The selection and variety of dates will shock you! Who knew there were "so many" types!! Had to get the famous date shake and it didn't disappoint. Tasted like date flavored ice cream, so I wouldn't be surprised to see vanilla ice cream in the ingredients!
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
Miss the old building but the new store reminds me of a Trader Joe's. The start is typical tourist gifts but the store has lots of food snacks and unique flavors! We came for the dates and a date shake but left with lots more. The indoor cafe is inside next to store and food is great.

Jade J.

Yelp
went today as we make our way deeper into palm springs, and saw this today, just to help anyone out! five review ! because i love this place, but i was so sad today and online it still says open.
google avatar

Yelp
Hadleys Fruit Orchards is one of my favorite spots to stop while out on my daily walk or before work. I have yet to try any food but have tried out the stuffed dates and coffee from the cafe! Great tasting always! I enjoy the medjool dates and snacks and hadleys bottled salsa and jams! The service is also great! Everyone is friendly and available to help at any time. I enjoy the ambience. It's never too loud and it's always a great vibe. I will probably try the date shake next which I hear is delicious. If you live in the area or are just passing through. This is a great place to stop. Tons of snacks, food, and drink options!

Jeff S.

Yelp
I agree their Dates Shakes are 5 out if 5 stars! I drove out there yesterday (7/6/24) with my mouth watering for one. When I got there, there was a sign on the door "Closed until further notice", I tried calling but a Message "user not accepting calls at the moment" Anybody know what happen? I will truly miss them...
google avatar

Jagruti L.

Yelp
I love dates! I haven't been to this new store since the original store closed down years ago. They reopened back in 2016 in the new shopping center. They provide premium quality dates, dried fruit, nuts, and gifts. They also carry travel essentials, drinks, candies, wine, spirits, and lastly they have cafe where you can purchase pizza, sandwiches, soup, salad, hamburgers and other delicious items. The store is clean and staff were all friendly. I got myself magnet and few items. Don't forget to checkin for free mix in for the date shake. I will try the date and date shake next time. Please stop by this store whenever you are in town shopping at Cabazon outlet or visiting Morongo Casino.

Yelp
Never again, we ordered sandwiches and the bread was stale. We won't bother coming again, not even for the date shake. Total joke.
google avatar

Martha E.

Yelp
This spot is home of their famous 'date shake'. There's a giant sign off the freeway that reads Hadley's. You can't miss it. That said, my partner was driving and often is at the outlets and had never seen the sign! So, go figure. Hadley's is divided into two main areas: a store with all kinds of goodies (including dates, every which way) and a cafe. The cafe has the shakes! They offer an 'original' flavor as well as a 'banana' flavor with a myriad of mix ins. When thinking of mix ins just remember that dates are naturally sweet and what you add may make it even sweeter!! They also offer vegan options and I love this. Everyone needs to try this shake at least once. We each got one on a stop at the outlets- going to and from. In fact, I hadn't finished my first one before I even asked about stopping again on our way back so we could get another one! Prices are decent for the shakes and I really wish i could have somehow taken a pitcher home. Do yourself a HUGE favor and stop here before shopping at the outlets or before continuing on to Palm Springs, etc. The shake is filling, doesn't weigh you down, and gives the perfect amount of fuel to keep going.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
mandatory date shake in palm springs. it is thick and pretty sweet (as expected) and good for sharing. it had date chunks to nibble on too.
google avatar

Neen M.

Yelp
WOW so glad we stopped here (after seeing the signs) It really is a great stop for a snack / store break / rest break. It's decorated so beautifully and makes it more than a simple quick stop. It's inviting and you want to explore and see what they have in their store. Came specifically for the date shakes and they did not disappoint!! I'm not vegan but tried the vegan one - it wasn't my fave but it was good. I think the coconut milk base takes over the flavor of the shake so keep that in mind. The banana date shake was my favorite. Great blend of flavors, not too sweet, and not to banana-y :) Line was a bit long but once they opened up the other register moved along quickly.
google avatar

Tashi. O.

Yelp
Get the date shake.... Nuff said The market itself has something for everyone, from zero sugar products to hot sauces. Next time I'm on my way to Palm Springs I'll def be stopping by
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Had to try the infamous Date Shake on the way to Palm Springs! It's a cute little market with a little cafe on the left, located right next to the outlets. I ordered the banana and date version, tastes exactly like the Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey ice cream flavor! It's like a soft serve, they pour from the machine right in front of you. Super thick and naturally sweet from the dates, very yummy!
google avatar

Leilani M.

Yelp
A perfect spot for a break from shopping. These date shakes seem like the perfect fulfillment to remind you of the simple pleasures in life. A nice cafe inside with ample seating for large groups. There's so much to look at and get swept away by it's charm. Nuts and fruits, tarts and pies, ingredients for the perfect charcuterie board, wines and sauces, various dried fruits and candies. Friendly atmosphere having that small town sparkle.
google avatar

Shontel C.

Yelp
The food was like cafeteria quality... zero meat in the beef tamales, but at $2.50 a pop I wasn't too mad. Tried my first date shake and it was tasty! They are premade though which was nice for sale of time but not the freshness I was expecting. The red bean chili was pretty decent. The store was super cute and some items were decently priced.
google avatar

Johnny B.

Yelp
I had a banana date milkshake which was great but everything else was gross. Burger must have been microwaved it was more like beef jerky and keep in mind I like my meat well done. Wheat bread only fyi which should have been enough of a reason to not eat there. My wife got a bagel sandwich with eggs clearly looked microwaved also Soda machine was flat Please skip this place. Don't get suckered into thinking the cool market and 100 year name means they care about serving quality food No business would serve this garbage if they cared

Angela K.

Yelp
Hot Pastrami on Rye with mustard. So good. Date shakes are amazing. If you go anywhere else you made a mistake
google avatar

Andrea C.

Yelp
date shake with peanut butter was to die for!! literally had it for breakfast. cute little shop with a bunch of candy/dried fruit/random food things. really cute.
google avatar

Adam R.

Yelp
BEWARE! What they advertise as "pitted dates" are often not pitted. Cracked my tooth on a whole pit - and then was insulted when their insurance agent said they sometimes get "pit fragments" in their products. Much better choices out there - I'd highly recommend anyone else but Hadley!

Grigor B.

Yelp
Tasty and delicious! I highly recommend this shake for anyone who wants a refreshing drink!
google avatar

Maddy T.

Yelp
Perfect little (pit)stop if you get what I mean. Hadleys has every single nut, fruit, candy, soda and any other gift shop item. The price for each item is pretty high up there but everything they have is very good! You can't go wrong with the boxes of dates. If you don't know what to get, the sampler is perfect! I tried out their chocolate chip cookies which were very good! Felt homemade Cashier lady was very nice! If you are hungry, there are plenty of chain restaurants right across the parking lot!
google avatar

Becky B.

Yelp
Cute little store to stop at while traveling. They have a cafe, souvenirs, snacks and some regular grocery items. I've always wanted to stop and try the date shake. I'm glad I finally made the time! The small was the perfect size because it's rich. I never would have thought to order a date shake in a restaurant but now I would!
google avatar

Marie D.

Yelp
A must-stop in the Cabazon area! As someone who isn't fond of dates, their date shakes are a pleasant surprise you'll definitely enjoy. You can order the original date shake or banana date shake and add mix-ins for an extra cost. It was a creamy sweet treat that your tastebuds would go wild for. The store also has a vast selection of grab-and-go's, snacks, and drinks that you can stock up on if you're on a road trip or in need a little pick-me-up.
google avatar

Louie M.

Yelp
Date shakes are crazy good!! Having a banana date shake today excellent for this 105* day. Service is quick and efficient. Clean store so many snacks goodies wines cheese beverages etc.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a few years and we stop every time time we got to AZ. Their date shake is awesome!!. Add some coffee to it and that does the trick. Refreshing in this heat. The snacks, too many to choose from. But what they got is a huge variety across board from their own. Be back next trip through.
google avatar

Jeffery S.

Yelp
Stopped by to get the world famous date shake. I didn't walk around the store but it looked like a larger convenience store. You order the shake at the cafe inside that is on the left. I got both shakes to try and they were both delicious. The date shakes were sweet and creamy. The only difference between the two was that the date flavor was very mild in the banana date shake. I would recommend stopping by if you pass the area.
google avatar

Gabriel N.

Yelp
I always stop here for snacks and a panini when I go to Coachella. One of the few stores left with great prices these days. Store is spotless too. Love this place.
google avatar

Rodolfo D.

Yelp
The place is the first I have gone to. My experience was ok but I would expect more good customer service has room for improvement. It should be equal to all nationalities. It is sad to this day of not being a certain race makes me disappointed I have always thought it would be better but more masked. I enjoyed selections of fruit for shakes. I really regretted getting the date Shake I had the worst experience I ever had I will not ever order that again. I recommend going to this location.
google avatar

Chrissie O.

Yelp
Stopped by here a few times for a date shake. It was so tasty and we all loved it. Definitely worth stopping by and taking a look at all the other items they sell there. Nice little pit stop during a long drive
google avatar

Ted T.

Yelp
Maybe all date shakes are great, I don't know, but the ones at Hadley are INCREDIBLE! Super thick, tasty, quick service, right off the freeway, lots of parking, and a good price - $6 - make this place a must stop whenever I drive by on a trip to Palm Springs or Arizona. Only negative is they didn't have an XXL t-shirts for sale.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Deglet noor dates are rlly good - I also got a banana milkshake and it was good but super filling
google avatar

Nina W.

Yelp
Banana date shakes are the best!! The end. No other words needed. The small size is plenty, it's super thick and rich so it's quite filling. I usually share it with someone. It's next to the outlets so grab one before or after shopping! Also, the line can get long but moves fast if you just order a shake.
google avatar

Bill G.

Yelp
Great shakes the purest is a little pricey but quality so there you go Cheap gas nearby too
google avatar

Sally L.

Yelp
Love stopping by for dried dates stuffed with walnuts and the date shakes! It's worth the crazy roundabout at the Cavazos Casino exit you have to risk your life going through because there are so many knuckleheads that do not understand how to merge in and out (gas station at the casino is also the cheapest around)!
google avatar

Jashica B.

Yelp
I love there banana date shakes!! A must try ..they have dates every thing. Also there sandwiches were good. Kinda reminds you of a country store. I have to stop here coming when I'm on my way back from Arizona.
google avatar

Othon H.

Yelp
Fun little store to run around in. Not actually an orchard, haha. Would recommend the wide selection of wild soda. We liked the prickly pear. BUT their date shake is firmly in the bottom half of date shakes I've had. Shields is the GOAT, sorry.
google avatar

Helen C.

Yelp
VEGAN DATE SHAKE- sooo good would definitely order again. BANANA DATE SHAKE- this was meh to me. Tasted like inside of a banana peel.
google avatar

Chas S.

Yelp
This is a long-time classic Coachella business which has now passed to the Morongo Band of Mission Indians. They've done a great job constructing a new cafe and store next to the original location, which is boarded up and waiting for a new life, perhaps. While there are no longer containers of samples to try, this store is so much better than what I remember as a kid. What used to be long rows of bagged snacks laying on the top of long tables has now evolved into a contemporary and air conditioned store with shelving and displays to see everything they have to offer. In addition to so many varieties of their famous dates, they have every jam, jelly, sauce, nut, chocolate and candy you could want. Nice things in the fridge sections, too, are available for folks who are lucky enough to not need to pack their yummies for transport. A small cafe in the the front corner of the store sells basic takeout food. Lots of people munching on hot dogs and chips, washed down with their world-famous date shakes!

Liam N.

Yelp
I'd seen the store from the freeway for months and had always planned to come in for some fruit. It's a big store and kinda looks fancy. I went in expecting to find a large selection of fresh fruit. After all, the store has "fruit orchard" in the name. I found a lot of dried fruits and nuts. But when I went to look for fresh fruit, all I found was one shelf of less than mediocre fruit. Green bananas and weird looking avocado. Why put "fruit orchard" in your name when you have such a sorry selection of fruit??? This place is the biggest disappointment in the desert. You should call yourself Hadley's Sundries or something. This is NOT a place for hood fruit. It'a more like a convenience store with a lot of dried fruit. Oh, and the staff are the least helpful people ever. The woman at the juice bar hardly knew what she was selling. Forget this place. Unless you like nuts.
