18 Best Restaurants in Raleigh, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Tucked into an unassuming strip mall, Hady’s is one of the Triangle’s premiere destinations for African cuisine. The menu is heavy on West African classics like jollof rice, egusi soup, and c’est bon snapper, but veers into international and Caribbean cuisine. Jamaican beef patties, jerk chicken, and even barbecue chicken wings are in conversation with their predecessors from the continent on this truly diasporic menu." - Matt Lardie

It was my first time visiting this restaurant the atmosphere was nice. I ordered the egusi stew with goat, but it wasn’t good. I have had egusi before many of times and made it ! So I know what it’s supposed to give. I sent it back and ordered the half buffalo wings/half jerk with Mac and cheese and chicken gizzards ! That was delicious the wings were spiced, fried, and seasoned to perfection! The Mac and cheese was macking! lol Absolutely delicious . My first time trying fried chicken gizzards it was really good it reminded me of eating fried calamari because of the chewy consistency. The only down side we had to wait a little long for our food. Ali was our server was very sweet and understanding ! Seemed a tad shy I just wanted him to be more attentive to our table. Overall I would eat here again.

Google
The food here is so delicious and well presented! The customer service is also nice. The bathroom was clean as well as the entire restaurant. I highly recommend.

Google
The service was excellent, and the food was quite enjoyable. While the Jerk chicken was a bit spicier than I preferred as I continued eating it, the plantains were cooked to perfection, and the rice and beans were very good. I also ordered the ginger drink and although it was strong, it was enjoyable.

Google
soooooo yummy, we got the egussi with goat and fufu + cabbage and cassava with lamb (absolutely lovedddd) + chicken gizzards and all of it was so good. would recommend trying to the baobab juice that they make! delicious, thick and sweet

AJ

Google
Chicken gizzards are amazing! I usually get the egusi w goat, but went for the cassava leaves w lamb and it was delicious, per usual. Dont forget the side of cabbage !

Google
Food is always delicious! Customer Service is superb and the decor is amazing. This spot is always a vibe. Wings are my favorite!!!! They provided dates to break our fast and even moved tables and provided prayer rugs to pray during this holy month of Ramadan. 10/10 highly recommended.

Google
We really enjoyed our food and the experience at Hadys. It was my husband's 1st time trying egusi and fufu we will definitely be back soon.

Yelp
Just ordered the chicken livers from Hady and they're different from any I've ever eaten. Very dark in color, crust didn't stick well, and although they were seasoned with African spices, I had to add lots of salt and also their hot sauce which is spicy and flavorful. If you're looking for traditional, southern soul food chicken livers, I can't recommend. Other dishes might be more to your liking. I'll review other menu items that I haven't tried yet, later.

Yelp
The egusi soup has by far the best goat that I've had in North Carolina! The customer service here is incredible and I would 100% recommend this place. I am a Nigerian by the way. I went into the facility and was really impressed. It is decorated very nicely and it gives a really comforting atmosphere.

Yelp
A hidden gem in Downtown Raleigh. Wife and I visited for the 1st time last night. Her oxtails were cooked to perfection. Tender and flavorful. My highlight was the collards and cabbage along with my Snapper. Will be back again
google avatar

Audrey K.

Yelp
I ordered something normal some shrimp, collard greens, beans/rice it was the only thing I felt I could eat. My dinner guests had the oxtails and she loved it, the other one had the tomatoes pepper chicken I think. I tried the sauce and it was divine, wished I had ordered that. I one thing I was disappointed in was the choice pieces of chicken. I like white meat and they only had dark. Now I could've eaten drumsticks but was told the chicken is set up for customers to get thighs and drumsticks. Even tho I asked if I could get legs instead I was politely told that I couldn't. I hope that when I visited again I'm able to get what I ask for.

Yelp
"The food was pretty decent, though the chicken did have quite a bit of oil sitting on top. However, my main concern was with the service. The lady in the back was very pleasant, but I observed an unsettling situation where she added a tip to a customer's card without his consent. He had to wait for someone else to come and refund his money. If you decide to visit this place, I'd recommend using exact cash to avoid any issues."

Yelp
Exceptional customer service, food, and vibes! Hady's is a beautiful restaurant with a warm ambiance. There are handpainted colorful African inspired murals on the walls throughout the entire inside, and plenty of comfy booths and tables for seating. The owner and his staff are very kind, polite, and knowledgeable about the dishes, they will answer any questions you have, so don't be shy about asking for a recommendation or explanation of what something is if you're new to the menu. The food is made with love, cooked with care, made fresh to order and comes out in a timely manner. Do yourself a favor and come with an empty stomach so you can truly enjoy all that Hady's has to offer. My recommendation is the lamb, oxtails, vermicelli, rice and peas with macaroni and cheese. The oxtails are small to medium in size, slow cooked in thick gravy with meat that falls off the bone! The rice and vermicelli are cooked to perfection, fluffy and soft. The macaroni and cheese is seasoned, very cheesy and delicious. They have all your favorite traditional African and Caribbean style beverages, including ginger based and fresh juice options, as well as sodas, and water. Free parking is available in front of the restaurant, 10/10 would recommend & return!

Yelp
I ordered a jerk chicken entree with collards and plantains. The jerk chicken was not very good. The chicken itself was tough and the spiciness level was way too high. Not to mention that it was drenched in a thick oily sauce. I also ordered the curry chicken with rice and beans and cabbage, while it was better than the jerk I would not order it again. Finally, we ordered the cassava leaves and it was authentic and delicious. Definitely a must have but the white rice seemed old and hard so make sure they get you something fresh.

Angee B.

Yelp
I ordered curry chicken with fufu and a side of plantains. There was a literal bone in my food which looked like a chicken leg bone and the other piece of meat looked like a piece of the chicken carcass not a thigh or breast. And it had barely any meat on it and the piece that was on there was hard and inedible. The fufu and plantains were ok, and the curry seasoning tasted great I just wish my main course had chicken in it. I was highly disappointed.

Yelp
Peace, good day! This place is A1 second to none. The food, the customer service, and the ambiance is nice. We had eaten here several years ago. We couldn't recall where this place was. Until recently and we were able to get back and enjoy not only the food but the atmosphere and the family environment.

Yelp
The food is always delicious! Excellent customer service! I have been coming here since 2021! The owner always comes out to greet his customers. I came here yesterday with my son and his girlfriend. We enjoyed our day and of course the food! The restaurant has a nice ambiance and peaceful atmosphere! I ordered lamb with jollof rice. is so good ! I have tried the hibiscus drink it is so delicious!

Yelp
African cuisines are unfamiliar to many Westerners but Hady is a great place to start your education. The restaurant can be a little difficult to find if you're not familiar with DTR but it's worth the effort. Our group of 6 was cheerfully accommodated. We started with nam (spring rolls), fried livers, and fried gizzards. The nam looks like Vietnamese spring rolls but do not taste the same. The beef, chicken, and vegetable filling has a peppery tang and unusual (to me) spice profile. I'm still undecided about how I feel about it. No indecision about the liver and gizzards, though. Their thick, crunchy batter is loaded with pepper, curry, and other good things and is absolutely delicious. I'd love to taste chicken fried in that coating. I can't say enough good things about the jollof rice with either chicken or lamb. So flavorful and falling off the bone tender. The red jollof with fish was well liked but not quite as much as the chicken. The table ordered two desserts, the beignets and a banana/coconut pudding. The beignets had a crunchy, lacy texture that could become addictive but were a bit heavy. The pudding was meant to be served with couscous and the combination was a little too unexpected for some of our table. I didn't taste it but I could see it working. Servings are very generous. Plan on taking home leftovers. The service is very friendly and polite. The staff is excellent at explaining unfamiliar menu items and very appreciative of returning customers. There were a few breaks, though, as empty plates weren't cleared and water refills took multiple requests. Still, you know the staff was happy to see you. Atmosphere is very neighborhood casual. There is plenty of parking and if you want to do takeout, it's a short walk to Moore Square.

Yelp
So glad I discovered this special spot. Great food, great atmosphere, and great service! The staff was soo friendly and welcoming and they have a long menu of various meats, soups, rices, and vegetables. There's definitely a dish here for anybody. The food takes time but all authentic and great tasting food does. I've been looking for great egusi in Raleigh for a while and this place did not let me down. I got red snapper, jollof rice, and egusi with chicken. Every single dish was super flavorful, hot, and tasty. All the portions were big and the food tasted super fresh and carefully prepared as well. The egusi comes with chicken or lamb so I'm definitely going to be back for the lamb and also wanted to try the peanut butter soup. Definitely a great spot for African food and highly recommend everyone to try their food!

Yelp
12/29/2022-This was my first time trying this spot. If you're not familiar with the area you may miss it. It's located within a strip of stores, if not mistaken it's beside a laundromat and barbershop/nail salon. The food wasn't bad but first glance it's looks very oily but it was very flavorful. This was my first time trying egusi (chicken) and fufu. The restaurant was undergoing cosmetic changes and from what I could see it's going to be very nice. They had a couple hand painting the artwork on the wall which was very beautiful along with much talent. The staff is very friendly and didn't mind asking questions for items you are not familiar with. The prices are kind of high but then again you're paying for authentic made to order food. Once I ordered it took about 15 minutes or so to prepare but I was happy it was fresh. The menu offers a wide variety of entrees, appetizers, and drinks. Some of the drinks look freshly made. If I have the taste for egusi I definitely know where to go.

Yelp
Food was delicious... Try the fresh ginger juice and other fresh juices. I promise you will not be disappointed and neither will your digestive system.... Yummy

Yelp
Fantastic yassa chicken and peanut soup chicken with fufu. Was pleasantly surprised by their in house made bouye drink. Was so impressed that we bought a gallon of bouye to take home for Thanksgiving with family up in Ohio.

Yelp
I'm not sure I've ever been disappointed in Senegalese food, and Hady continues the trend. It's a very welcoming place, with beautiful colorful giant murals and upbeat (yet unobtrusive) music that makes you forget you're in a strip mall in North Carolina. This is the first time I've ever not ordered egusi when I've seen it on the menu, but my partner ordered it, and it was great. I also don't think it's ever tasted the same twice. Here it's almost scrambled-eggy textured, with a very strong aroma from the seeds that outweighs any other flavor, though the ground crayfish base is detectable. I guess what I'm saying is, even though he ordered it with goat, the stew itself was not goaty. I ordered the red jollof rice with fish; they were out of red jollof, so I got white jollof. It was great anyway, especially with the plethora of mystery sauces (I know one was habanero based, my best guess on the second is moringa, and the third tastes like Japanese umeboshi, so who knows). This portion was enough for three full meals (I had it at noon - it's 8pm and I am still not ready for dinner, and I have half still in the fridge). Even more exciting: they had bouye (baobab drink) which I have been mostly unsuccessfully chasing for years! I finally had it once, earlier this year at a Senegalese food truck based in Hillsborough called Yagg Sii Ten, but I think they mix it with more other stuff. Here it seemed more unadulterated. This is not a refreshing drink - I probably was MORE thirsty after I drank it, in the same way you'd be if you had a milkshake - but it is for sure a completely unique flavor.

Yelp
First time trying Caribbean/Senegalese cuisine and it was super yummy! We ordered: White jollof rice with chicken - Tender chicken and flavorful rice!! So good definitely recommend this! Yassa chicken - Juicy chicken! Comfort food right here. Jollof with fish - Not as good as the Jollof with chicken! We also tried the bouye and bissap drinks! My friends liked the bouye drink which tasted like a thick fruit smoothie and I liked the bissap better which is a refreshing juice made out Hibiscus flower. Overall, portion sizes were huge and owner was so friendly and welcoming!!

Yelp
Delicious! Came here with a group of friends and was served up delicious African cultural dishes in a bright and friendly atmosphere. Servers were helpful and it was a lot of food packed with flavor. Glad a place like this is here.

Yelp
1st time trying African food and I'm sooo happy to be at this restaurant. Fried Chicken Liver & Jollof Rice was soooooo yumm. Also tried Fufu & Egusi Chicken Soup Fufu is made with mashing cooked Yuca/Tapioca & Plantain. It's usually served with light Soup with any protein. I tried with Egusi Chicken Soup. Egusi is a seed, which is high in protein. This seed has a strong flavor which some people like & some don't. But they also serve Other Soups without Egusi seed. I have to say about those Chicken Liver, perfectly fried - crispy on outside & soft inside. A must try A great restaurant to try with your family I will be back soon, have to try their Jerk Chicken

Yelp
You are hit with smells of deliciousness as soon as you walk into the building. It smelled like walking into someone's kitchen. The front desk person was so pleasant and helpful and assisted me with my selections. I selected Chicken jollof rice, Equisa Soup with goat and fufu, a chicken patty, fish fayata, cabbage and Baobab Juice. Now lets get into this. The standout for me was the fish fayata, I could have eaten 10 of these. Crispy on the outside and full of flavor on the inside. I can't even put into words but it was heavenly. Chicken patty was good, spicy but not outstanding. The jollof rice was just what you expect and the chicken was tender. This was my first time trying Equisa soup so I did not know what to expect but it was tasty. I am excited to go back and try more dishes.

Yelp
We heard about this place from word of mouth, and it didn't disappoint. We had been looking for African food for a while. We started off with the chicken gizzards, they were good, a td bit salty and tough. Then I ordered the heck wings for my mom, they weren't spicy at all but had a good flavor and it comes with a side, we chose rice. My friend opted for okra soup and pepper soup, while we are accustomed to Liberia African food the okra soup tasted like we were used too. The jollof rice with chicken was different from what I'm used too. I didn't care for the rice itself, but the chicken had great flavor. The restaurant was clean and they had great music playing, service was great, not too fast so you know they are cooking everything fresh. I would definitely go back for the okra soup and fufu.

Yelp
The food is authentic African cuisine and has great flavors! The staff is friendly. It is close to downtown.

Yelp
I recently dined here and the food was outstanding. From the moment I stepped in, the staff exuded warmth and professionalism. The menu showcased a culinary masterpiece, with each dish reflecting a perfect blend of flavors and artful presentation. The attention to detail in both service and cuisine elevated the entire dining experience, making it a memorable gastronomic journey. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone seeking a delightful fusion of exquisite dishes and great service.

Yelp
Our family loves African food. The Gambian owner here is kind and explained things well. It's not early as spicy as Nigerian or Ghanaian so easier for westerners to ease into African food here. Great ambience. Great food. The egusi was especially noteworthy.

Yelp
I hate to have to write this review, but I feel I am doing a disservice by not informing other locals of the disrespect we received tonight from this restaurant. We ordered the PB Chicken, the stew, and Jerk Chicken ($75 total... pretty steep for three entrees). Unfortunately, when the food arrived, it was packaged poorly in a plastic bag, with the heavy weighted food stacked on top of the styrofoam box, in turn smashing all the food in the bag. All the plastic lids were not secured tightly, which caused the oils to leak all in the bag and created a mess. On top of it all, we called in ahead of time to ensure the meals were not spicy. After telling us there was no "kick" at all to the food, it turned out we couldn't even eat the entrees, due to the spiciness level. Not only did we feel that we were ill-informed, but when I called back up to the restaurant to explain what happened, the employee told me this was not his fault and to take it up with DoorDash (we didnt order through doordash to begin with...). In the end, we just felt like we were not treated with any respect, and after spending $75 on food, you would think the restaurant owners would reach back out to try and make their customers happy, but clearly this is of no concern to them as they were trying to get us off the phone as soon as possible, not caring about any of the aforementioned issues.

Yelp
Highly recommend. Great and friendly service. Amazing food lots of great options no matter your diet.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful experience! I have been searching for African food in Raleigh, don't know how I missed this gem. We ordered fried livers, fish fataya, and a chicken patty for appetizers. For our entrees we ordered curry chicken, and egusi soup w/goat and fufu. And a side of jollof rice. Everything was delicious. I was especially impressed with the fufu, this was the best I've had thus far. The consistency and texture was perfect. Very soft and not too sticky. I want to try everything. I loved the decor as well, looks very nice and colorful inside. Lots of art and murals. Oh and the drinks...LOVE! Ordered several bottles of the hibiscus and the ginger drinks.

Yelp
Wow all I can say is amazing. I've eaten here every day for a week via Uber eats. The curry goat has a hold on my soul. The lamb is also fantastic. I also tried the peanut butter soup for the first time. I'll miss this place when I go back to Atlanta The lemonade and sweet tea are also great perfect sweetness

Yelp
My husband and I have been wanting to try some authentic African food for awhile. I heard about Hady International Food Restaurant through a post on Facebook. We decided to try it, drove 1 hour to get there, and we were NOT disappointed!! We ordered a few items from the menu-- Red Jollof Rice with Fish, Peanut Butter Soup with Fufu, Chicken Shawarma, and then we asked the gentleman taking our order (sorry I didn't get his name) to suggest something he thought was really good. He picked the grilled lamb with couscous. Everything was delicious!!! Even our son, who is extremely picky, enjoyed it! Yeah, we're going back!!
google avatar

Angee R.

Yelp
I didn't enjoy the food or the drinks. I've had food from several Haitian and Nigerian ppl but it didn't taste nothing close. The customer service was great and the inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated. The outside looks like a whole in the wall.

Yelp
Great delicious authentic food with wonderful service a must go to, highly recommend, 1st time I went I go it to go and was waiting in my car when it was finished next thing I know it was being brought out to me as soon as it was ready, didn't even have to ask, the 2nd time I went eat in and enjoyed it lovely setting very clean and welcoming

Yelp
Excellent delicious flavorful food!! Huge menu tons of options and their homemade juices are very tasty. Service was kind and the atmosphere was great. 10/10, a hidden gem in Raleigh
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
I got takeout from Hady International and now eagerly anticipate visiting the restaurant in person. The menu is expansive and the portions more than generous, making for some tough choices. I went with Jamaican jerk chicken, which came with ladles of rice and beans as a "side." Tasty doesn't start to do justice to what was going on in my mouth. Separate orders of greens, cabbage, and fries added a vegetable element and rounded out the plate nicely. All this turned into about four meals. #value

Yelp
So glad we learned of this restaurant for African food. I was so excited to see the menu and even more excited to try authentic African food. Peanut butter soup, Orka soup and Yassa chicken all delicious! Definitely a place I will visit often.
google avatar

Han T.

Yelp
Nothing short of AMAZING. We had the peanut butter soup and fish jollof and loved it. Portions were generous and flavorful. Service was quite friendly; made us feel welcomed. We drove from Chapel Hill just to try this and will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Samone M.

Yelp
Just tried for the first time and it was pretty tasty! I ordered through Uber eats and purchased the Egusi soup with chicken + fufu and Yassa with red snapper. I don't consume international foods often so the flavors were definitely unique for me but it's actually yummy. I'll be trying more items on the menu for sure!
google avatar

Ronnie M.

Yelp
The good: food had good flavor, spices, and was hot. The bad: the lamb was completely overcooked and rubbery. The oxtails were better but there were hardly any in the dish. Ordered meat dishes only to pay almost 70 dollars for pounds and pounds of rice. Not a good deal.
google avatar

Diann F.

Yelp
I finally found an authentic African food place! I drove to Southeast Raleigh from out near Mni City and regret nothing. The delicious aroma met me at the door. I ordered Egusi Soup with chicken and fufu. I opted for take out. My mouth watered all the way home because it smelled so good. When I got home the food was still hot. My first dip of the fufu into the soup sent me to heaven as the flavors came together to create a symphony on my tongue. I shared a little with a neighor and she too was impressed. I will be going back and trying other food on the menu! The service was excellent, the staff was friendly while I waited for my order, and the atmosphere was very pleasant. I might have to eat in next time! I highly recommend this place!!

Yelp
I'd been craving ox tails for the past couple of weeks so I decided to try a spot other than my usual. I saw that Hady international had great reviews so I thought why not. I ordered ox tails w/ rice & peas & macaroni. It took a minute to place and receive my order which was fine- business Is booming which means that the food must be great, right? When It was time to eat I was very unimpressed. The oxtails tasted like "southern" oxtails which is fine, but they were a little tough & not as seasoned. My plate was packed with rice & peas which was very unnecessary because I ended up only eating less than one serving of the overcooked rice. The macaroni was ok. It taste like they used sliced American cheese, which is a no no. I was very disappointed to know that I wasted $17 on this meal.
google avatar

Jasmine H.

Yelp
My family is west African and I've been craving good African food since my mom is currently out of the country. This place definitely did not disappoint. I'm going to enjoy trying everything on the menu. My mom loves this place too.

Julien N.

Yelp
Delicious food very different cuisine. Lots of flavor generous portion. Be open minded try it out you will love it!

Yelp
Came across Hady looking for West African food. Ordered the red jollof & rice - Senegalese Thieboudienne - and it's so flavorful and a very generous portion. I will definitely come back. Great customer service too, definitely recommend!

Dominique M.

Yelp
Amazing service , and Amazing food. They have welcoming and clean energy. When I say the whole area was clean like every table was clean even the ones people were eating at to have amazing drinks to wash down all that food that you order and amazing art

Ariana C.

Yelp
The food is so good and great service, it was hot and fresh and you can just taste the soul that made this meal

Gemere S.

Yelp
The ambiance of the place was very nice. Very culture like of the African culture. Nice music , very clean. Our waitress was very nice and personable. The food was very delicious and hot. I enjoy rice and beans and I ordered that for the side and it was amazing. The spices in the food were very good. Definitely going back.

Yelp
Visited recently for the first time with a friend. We had jollof rice with fish, and yassa chicken. Both were good but the yassa chicken was especially tasty. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The gentleman who served us checked in on us multiple times for our thoughts on the food and drinks, which he knew we were trying for the first time. He enthusiastically answered our questions and told us about his own background growing up with the food we were enjoying. Overall a very pleasant dining experience.

Tracy W.

Yelp
I decided to try this restaurant on door dash and I was disappointed. After reading good reviews I decided to try it. I got a beef patty that was very dry, burned and no filling, my husband had oxtails that he said was not tender and very little meat. I also got the brown chicken which was ok, I spent over $70 and not happy with this choice

Melody R.

Yelp
I love it I recommend anybody to go great food great service first time eat it the best thing ever

Yelp
Flavorful well spiced food and Kind service, Hadys is a gem. I just wish I heard of this place earlier. The ambiance and vibe are also great and the place has a welcoming and clean atmosphere. I highly recommend. This is a new regular place for me
