19 Vegan Tacos To Try in San Diego

"Along the Encinitas stretch of Coast Highway, James Haggard’s modern incarnation of Haggo’s offers three vegan tacos, all of which are 100% organic. The Veronica Corningstone, much like the namesake Anchorman 2 character, is a standout. A hidden base of sweet potato supports tumbling red quinoa, avocado, vegan cheese, and fresh salsa cruda." - Kelly Bone

"The spirit of Jacques Cousteau is very much alive at this Encinitas restaurant, which specializes in tacos filled with local fish, organic meat, and fresh vegetables. The Cousteau taco—featuring catch of the day (like California halibut) with cumin-lime crema, mango salsa, and cabbage slaw—should be in the running for San Diego’s best fish taco. Equally delicious are the Azul (grass-fed flank steak, caramelized onions, mushrooms, blue cheese, arugula, and cilantro) and the vegan Veronica Corningstone (red quinoa, sweet potatoes, garlic, Daiya vegan cheese, avocado, and cilantro). One look at the menu and it’s easy to tell the owner is a movie buff—many of the items are named after famous characters, from Ron Burgundy to Kelly Leak from The Bad News Bears ."

We love Haggo's! Have been enjoying the quality food here for many years! The menu has expanded to breakfast and dinner offerings. The chicken and beef are premium with excellent seasoning that compliment with just about anything. Some of our favorites are the Nachos, Uncle Rico Quesadilla, Ron Burgundy Burrito and all the tacos are creative with delicious and fresh ingredients that keep you coming back! The portion sizes are great too, we always leave here happily full!

I ordered the vegan burrito that comes with sweet potatoes, quinoa, avocado, vegan cheese, greens, etc. In all honesty I can hardly consider it a burrito; it was more like a wrap. The tortilla wasn't grilled, and everything inside it was cold. It would have been a pretty bland meal if they didn't have five different salsas to choose from. That really took it up to a whole other level. It was fun choosing a different salsa for every bite. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, but it would have been amazing, 5 stars if they had only cooked the burrito, gotten that cheese all melty, and added some seasoning to the sweet potatoes and quinoa. A little more thought and effort goes a long way.

Spectacular, slightly pricy taco joint in Leucadia. Batter for fried fish is amazing. Very kid friendly. Ingredients very fresh.

First time at Haggo’s. Get it line and order your food, then pay and sit down if you can find a place. It is not a typical dinning room by any shape of the matter. Actually it’s not a room at all. Mostly outside with tables scattered around and more than a few bar like counters to sit at. It is not a family friendly, except for the crayons and place mats to color and two boxes of toys to throw around. You get a number and the servers find you by your number. Napkins in dispensers and four sauces served in squeeze bottles are placed on the table.i ordered the Azul burrito with glazed onions. Lots of meat and tasty caramelized onions, I found to be very tasty and tender. For my grandkids, they got rolled up quesadillas with two wedges of orange. Our guacamole came with a minimum amount of chips, but since our main course came with chips, we were able to use those to eat the guacamole. HAGGO’s appears to be a hip place to go. I would return when I’m back in California. I did basically enjoy the food. If this commentary was helpful to you, please look below before you go and hit the thumbs up. Thank you.

This place has been on my hit list for a while now. I was finally in the area and im so glad I had the time to stop in. I wanted to originally try the tacos and ceviche, but because I came in the morning I was in the mood for a good breakfast burrito. And they did not disappoint. It was outstanding. My friend loved his torta as well. The woman who took our order was friendly and gave good service. This place is a must try if you are in the area.

Google
Burrito Bowl and added Beef, for extra protein. This is a hefty meal for sure, and can be split between two people or taken home for leftovers! Loved how much food was in this, and the beef and chicken were perfect. I think my only note is I would ask for light beans because there were so many!! Too many for me, they tasted great and I love beans it was just too much for me. I will definitely come back and try their other dishes.

Google
The three vegan friendly tacos were good and the portions large. The homemade sauces were AMAZING. However, for the price, I personally would only go back if the veg options were more creative- perhaps a cauliflower taco or just something different- 2 of the 3 I ordered seemed almost exactly the same. That said, I can only review the vegetarian ones, I'm sure the others on the menu were excellent. They had Vegan friendly churros as well! My husband got a quesadilla that was altered to be vegan that he enjoyed. Both dishes and the order of churros came to $60.

Google
We got the quesadilla and fish tacos. Both were fresh and delicious. The order at the counter service was quick and easy, our food was out in 10 minutes. Loved the mango on the fish tacos and the fish was perfectly seasoned. Also has large drink selection and majority of seating is outdoor. Highly recommend. Great for casual and large group setting.

Yelp
Busy fast casual place. We had 2 orders of veggie tacos and a veggie bowl with one substitution. They managed to forget the substitution as well as the side for one of the taco orders. Veggie tacos were decent. Service was ok. Plenty of better taco places in North City.

Yelp
Being in San Diego always makes me think of two things. How fast can I get to the water and where can I get some tasty tacos?? Haggo's is serving up some delicious fresh food. They cook with organic, scratch made ingredients which includes grass fed beef and wild caught fish. They use avocado oil in their fryers and dressings for flavor and nutrition. I read a few reviews before coming here and knew I had to try it. I luckily got a spot on the street to park right out front. Parking can be a real challenge in this area as it is mixed residential with commercial. They have a small lot in back but it does not hold that many cars. I walked in and was greeted by a friendly person. Looking at the menu, I decided to go with Haggo's Special - Baja Fish Taco plate with chips and beans. I definitely made the right choice. The mahi mahi tacos were flavored with fire roasted crema, cabbage slaw, salsa crudo and cilantro. Pure yum! I always know that I can get the best Mexican food in this part of California and I go for it every time I am here. So many other options to sample such as Cousteau Fish Taco, Chicken Veggie Bowl, Wild Shrimp Taco, Azul Taco, Land and Sea Taco and the list goes on and on. Great patio dining while you feel the cool ocean breeze and the warm sun. I probably could have just sat there enjoying this feeling all afternoon. Take your Taco Tuesday up a notch and try out this fabulous spot. Your tummy will thank you!

Yelp
TL; DR Cochinita Nachos are good! Priced at about 17 dollars. Salsas aren't great. My girlfriend absolutely loves this spot and while it was initially a letdown for me for a few reasons, I eventually found an item that I really enjoy. Their Cochinita nachos! Served with a generous portion of braised pork with a nice tangy kick offered by the pickled onions. It has been hitting the spot, unfortunately not consistently. Out of the three times I ordered it, one time it wasn't great. It was a bit more bland and the pork was dry. Two major things that continue to be a major obstacle for me fully recommending this spot is their lack of consistency and their salsas. They serve four different kinds of salsas with your meal and sadly none of them are very good. Staff has always been courteous in person, although a bit defensive when it comes to online feedback; once going as far as calling me a liar for saying their chips were stale when I've heard the same feedback from my girlfriend who is a die-hard fan as well as her aunt. I'm not one to hold a grudge and understood the owners were just trying to stand up for their business, so I came back a few more times until I found something I liked, but I really think the business could benefit from some tweaks to their process to deliver a more consistent experience and upgrade the flavor in their sauces. They do not use any seed oils in their food and only use organic/high quality proteins.

Yelp
If disappointment had a flavor, it would still be stronger than anything I tasted here. I came in hungry, left confused--and not in the "wow, that was unexpectedly amazing" kind of way. No, more like "did someone accidentally run the food through a flavor-removal machine?" kind of way. Let's talk about the sauces. They gave me FIVE. I got excited. I took a picture like a proud parent. But after trying them all? I started to question if I had COVID again. Nothing. Not a hint of salt, spice, tang--anything. Just vibes. Vibes and $65 of regret. The food itself? Bland. Unseasoned. Emotionally unavailable. It felt like it was trying to tell me a story, but forgot the plot halfway through. I've had more flavor chewing on a napkin. At one point, my son dropped a piece of his taco on the ground. A bird swooped down, grabbed it, and then immediately flew off like it had somewhere better to be. Even nature rejected this food. If this is a modern take on Mexican food, then I guess it's post-flavor. Honestly, I want my money back. Or at least a letter of apology from whoever tied up the spices and left them out of the kitchen. Until then, I'll be sitting at home eating Hot Cheetos to feel something again.

Yelp
Haggo's is such a great casual spot with a cute patio and friendly staff! Their Caesar with shrimp has become my go to favorite order!

Yelp
After a long week of holiday food and drinks, I was so thankful to be saved by a healthy, good for you and good tasting lunch spot. Everything here is cooked in avocado oil and tasted so fresh and clean. I enjoyed three tacos while my husband chose the rolled tacos. The food was swiftly delivered to our tables and everything was delicious. The servers were all very helpful and patient as we decided what to order. We also loved sitting on the outdoor patio as it was a warm afternoon.

Yelp
I made it to Haggo's in Encinitas and I can say the place is super cool. It's got a real California vibe to it. The people there are great. So helpful and pleasant. I had two tacos and believe me they were astounding. Go with your appetite and bro g friends so you can share and taste each other's things. Wow what a great place. It's a must visit when in the San Diego area

Yelp
Ran across this spot on my walk and oh boy, what a great place to grab a bite! The waitress was really helpful in deciding what I wanted to order and I ended up with the Birria Tacos. They were SO good, and so filling. I only ate one and saved the other for later, so the serving size was plenty (also reheated super well!). Sat outside on the porch where they had plenty of sunny outside spots. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
Got it! Here's the revised version without the word *lackluster*: --- We decided to stop by this place because it looked busy when we drove past. We ordered the ceviche, quesadilla, and Al Pastor tacos. The food was just okay--nothing impressive. I've definitely had much better Mexican food elsewhere. The restaurant wasn't exactly dirty, but it wasn't clean either, which was off-putting. Between the average food and the questionable cleanliness, there's really no reason to come back. I wouldn't recommend stopping here--it's not worth it.

Yelp
Great spot in Leucadia, offering delicious food options ranging from tacos, to bowls, tortas and more. We tried their steak bowl and torta special of the day. Prices are steep but portions are great. Ambiance is wonderful, right on the PCH in Leucadia and next to many shops
google avatar

Yelp
This place has been one of my go-tos for a long time! A huge selection of organic tacos, burritos, bowls, soups and draft beer. It's a cute little coastal spot, so The ambiance is awesome and the service is always on point. Great selection of vegan and vegetarian grub as well. Highly recommend the Kelly Leak
google avatar

Shruti J.

Yelp
Great pet friendly restaurant with amazing baja tacos! So fresh and crispy - just perfect! Also tried their Mahi taco and pibil taco and everything was so good. Their house sauce made everything taste even better - make sure to try them with your tacos. They have a good selection of tap beers and their outdoor seating made our experience even better! We did not get our dog but will bring him with us the next time we dine here which I am sure will be very soon! Highly recommend

Yelp
Delicious Mexican food just a few blocks from the beach. Haggo's has a very comfortable patio and the food is fresh and organic. We ordered a few tacos and a burrito with very delicious ingredients. My fish taco's wild catch of the day was halibut and it was topped with fresh mango which was a really nice and sweet touch. The azul taco came with very tender grass-fed beef, caramelized onions, shrooms, arugula, blue cheese, and cilantro. It had that sweet & savory thing going on that I love so much. Since you're just a few blocks away from the ocean you'll feel that wonderful breeze. We had a new girl learning the ordering machine when we walked up and she did great. They even have a small parking lot directly behind them. We'll definitely be back here as well and I can't wait to try some of their other taco creations.

Yelp
Wow!! So delicious!! The carne asada was so flavorful and non chewy. The grilled fish taco was perfect, the fish tasted so fresh and zero fishy taste which I appreciate. Overall, the quality of the meats here stood out to me the most. I also love how everything here is cooked in avocado oil!
google avatar

Trisha V.

Yelp
Love a twist on a taco shop. Well executed updates to a rubios. Organic and it tastes fresher. Fun menu names for the food items. Great selection of beer and wine. Wait times for Togo orders are pretty accurate and the place is cute Leucadia vine if you want to dine in and watch the trains go by. Totally worth it to check them out.

Julia G.

Yelp
I am so happy I decided to have dinner here! The food was absolutely amazing and the vibes were great. My friends and I got a few different tacos, ceviche & guac. The food was so fresh and yummy. Willie, Courtney and all the staff were all so kind. I will definitely be returning!

Yelp
If you knew the original Haggo's years ago, you're likely to be disappointed. Even if you weren't around then, the quality--and thus the value--really aren't there. The poblano corn chowder was the best thing we had. The fish in the Cousteau (grilled) was overcooked, tough and mostly tasteless and the mango wasn't ripe. The grilled shrimp taco also lacked flavor. (Why I couldn't get it fried Baja-style is beyond me.) When they brought out FOUR bottles of fresh, homemade hot sauces, I was happy, but the joy was short-lived. Not sure if the new incarnation of Haggo's has any connection to the original. The new location is more modern, but I'd much prefer the low-rent, hippie-vibe location to pricey digs and marginal food.

Ryan C.

Yelp
Healthy and quality ingredients. Grabbed food to go with family on easter and everyone loved they're food and said they would definitely go back again. The restaurant itself is nicely laid out, with good use of the space for maximum seating. Reasonably fast service for how busy they were. Also, the quality did not suffer either I tried both veggie burritos and they were both great! Also, pretty large which I appreciate. thanks Haggos!
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Haggo's organic taco is yummy. We added margaritas to go with our tacos and nacho plate. Let me just say...the FRESHEST ingredients. Layers of flavor and super hearty portions. The location is along PCH in Leucadia/Encinitas and has a relaxed beach town vibe which I love. They always have a rotating selection of margaritas and the counter server was knowledgeable about the menu. Would definitely come here again. Good to know: parking in the rear of the restaurant building and there is a nice walk through to the restaurant.

Yelp
I left this place feeling uplifted and energized. I rarely get that these days, especially at a busy eatery. The positive energy is very refreshing and welcoming. The music choice - some might call it 'pop punk' of the 70s/80s - was out of the ordinary in a completely positive sense of the phrase. Another rarity that I appreciated. The tacos did not disappoint. Proportioned well and substantially sized. Accompanied with salsas (presumably of the house) at table. Overall, a mix of elements - which on their own might not seem special - that, when put together at an establishment like this, produces a five-star experience. Highly recommended. I think a tourist or out-of-towner like myself would particularly appreciate how accessible this place is. I myself usually have trouble getting my bearings whenever I'm in a California beach town like Leucadia. (And I grew up in a California beach city...) Bold, attractive signage makes the eatery easily recognizable at a distance, and a lot for about eight cars in the rear made parking very easy. Lastly, a festive wide-open floor plan and arrangement of seats adds to the communal enjoyment of the space for everyone.

Yelp
I just got back into town and always go straight to Haggo's for nachos. This time I decided to try their Birria Tacos. Dang!!! They were Awesome. I will be back soon.
google avatar

Travis A.

Yelp
Beans seamed overcooked, taco meat unseasoned and they need to put a sauce in the fish tacos some type of white sauce is common. Also no hard liquor here so if you wanted a margarita kiss that goodbye. Great ambiance tho and great location and GREAT service! Just the food I didn't love

Erika M.

Yelp
First time here and wow I give it 12/10. My hubs and I both got a fish taco and shrimp taco. We also got the chips and guac and two beers. The hot sauces were a good variety too. Parking was pretty tight but we managed to find one quickly.
google avatar

I A M.

Yelp
Delicious food, several gluten free options, nice workers and pleasant ambiance, both inside and out on patio.
google avatar

Brad W.

Yelp
Seven years ago before a new ownership we used to really like this place now the sauce is absolutely tasteless and this is what I got... Very disappointed... Sorry... I intend to pass this information on... I think the manager was there too and saw me taking pictures of my food and for that reason did not approach me... It's a shame in our current time where every penny counts
google avatar

Yelp
Great location right along the 101 in Leucadia. Quality organic ingredients! My favorites so far are the Chilaquiles for breakfast and the Ron Burgundy Burrito. Kids really enjoyed their chips & guac. Love supporting a local family owned business. We'll be back.
google avatar

Trecia L.

Yelp
My husband and I came here on a Sunday for lunch. You get a view of the train and Coaster while sitting outside. We wanted to have something not too heavy so we opted for tacos. We ordered the Wild Shrimp Taco, Crousteau fish taco, Land & Sea taco, and the Immortal taco 2.0 (Vegan). It was all tasty. I must say that my favorite was the Immortal taco. They also have sauces to put on your tacos too. Great spot to grab a bite on the 101.
google avatar

Yvette A.

Yelp
Discovered this place while at Duckfoot. The tacos look delicious!!! We just ordered the chips and guacamole with salsa. It all was fresh and very good. The staff members were all really nice seemed like a good place to hang out and eat tacos. The one downside the price vs the portions are on the higher end. Overall I will go back to try out a taco.
google avatar

Nar N.

Yelp
This was my favorite meal in Encinitas while visiting. Healthy, fresh, tasty, good ambiance, good service, and good draft beer. What more does a girl need? The veggie bowl had kale, quinoa, and sweet potato. The green salsa was great.
google avatar

Brody F.

Yelp
I had the Cousteau and the Land & Sea tacos. Both were excellent! The Cousteau may have been the best fresh fish taco I've ever had. Good vibe, good beer, good service.
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
Haggo's is DELICIOUS! The tacos and burritos are divine - great seasoning on all the meats (10/10 recommend the pork) and veggies. Make sure to try all the salsas - adds great flavor. The guacamole and chips also shouldn't be missed. The spot also recently debuted breakfast on weekends. The breakfast is just as great as lunch/dinner. The Chilaquiles and breakfast tacos are *chefs kiss* Make sure to stop by Bump for a coffee to pair with it all.
google avatar

Suzie R.

Yelp
Was looking for a good taco joint after a long day at Legoland...we found this one through Yelp! Yay! And upon arriving found out it's a triple D place...even better! Guy Fieri approved - we're in. They have a parking lots in the alley in the back with 8 spots. Food: we ordered chips and guacamole to start. The amount of guacamole is ridiculous (in a good way). They even have us more chips upon my request. Thank you to the staff. I'm not sure about you but I'm not wasting any guac! Then I ordered the veggie and shrimp tacos. I got a Mexican Coke and hubby got a beer. Hubby got the surf and turf taco and the fish taco...he devoured them. Mine were awesome too. They have a cute kids menu and have crayons too! You can't go wrong trying this cute place.
google avatar

irene w.

Yelp
Please have accurate menus out with accurate pricing. 4/5 because if you raise your prices you need to change the hand menus or at least pull them.
google avatar

Sol C.

Yelp
Nice low key spot with casual atmosphere right on the 101. The fish taco and land/sea taco were good and filling, and I really loved the side of kale salad. Had a michelada while I waited for my take out order to be ready. Perfect to bring to Beacon's beach for sunset.
google avatar

Analisa S.

Yelp
Went to Haggo's for the first time last night and there was a lot of options! I got the Local Roots Margarita and two cochinita pibil tacos. It's a great spot to get a quick lunch or dinner. They have a great patio to sit and eat at. The food was really great but didn't care for the margarita.
google avatar

Jody D.

Yelp
My grandson loves the kids burrito! He's 3 and ate the entire meal! There are placemats for the kids to color.
google avatar

Jamie K.

Yelp
Visiting from East Coast. Gotta get tacos. BUT... even in SoCal it's often tough to find legit veggie and vegan taco options. This place has you covered. And a few options for tasty 0% (N.A.) cervezas.
google avatar

L S.

Yelp
Had to go back and visit again! Omg, Courtney, You are an amazing chef! Everything was delicious! Willie-thanks for your service and the history lesson on Haggo's! Definitely cannot wait whenever you open a new location closer to La Jolla!

Monica S.

Yelp
The very best tacos I have ever eaten anywhere in the world. Made even better since they are totally free of bad fats and other unhealthy things. Enjoy with no fear. Fast and great service. Lovely people. I go out of my way to eat here often.
google avatar

Tom L.

Yelp
Arrived in the area on Tuesday night and needed/wanted something fresh, good and available. Haggo's hit all three and more.
google avatar

Tammie W.

Yelp
The hubby and I like hitting up Haggo's when we go up to North County now that we've moved further south. I no longer have the ability to eat here weekly like I used to. We normally have the fish tacos and quesadilla but tried their steak tacos this time around, alongside the fish tacos of course. I ordered the grass fed beef taco which is made with flank steak and topped with caramelized onions and a creamy slaw. It was delicious and well seasoned. The hubby ordered the Azul taco which is a steak taco as well but topped with bleu cheese and arugula which gives it that funk and peppery bite that goes so well with steak. My issue in the past was the lack of salt in their protein, beans and rice but they corrected that on this trip, so everything was super tasty, fresh and clean. There's no keeping me away from Haggo's, so see you in about a month.
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Wow! This place is fantastic! The atmosphere is the perfect combination of beach casual, family friendly and still conveys that you are in for a treat. Fast and very friendly service made us feel right at home. Great drink selection both nonalcoholic and alcoholic. Now onto the tacos, I can't wait to go back! The grass-fed beef taco is heavenly perfection. Tender beef and so flavorful with the caramelized onions and cream making a magical sauce. The Cousteau fish taco was so fresh with the mango and cilantro adding to the simple and yet delicious taco. We saw a couple other menu items come out of the kitchen when we were there and I can't wait to try them all! Allergy and dietary concerns friendly for all. Parking lot in the back. Enjoy!
google avatar

Christina E.

Yelp
Wish I hadn't taken so long to try this place out. I tried the Immortal tacos. Superb! And try the mango habanero salsa a try, you won't stop eating it. I'm a bit of a tortilla chip snob, they were great. Super crispy and not greasy.

Justin G.

Yelp
Went down there this weekend to try out the place. Food was amazing and the ambience was very chill and laid back. Got a chicken quesadilla and it was really good. I also got chips and guacamole that was super fresh. The service was super nice and friendly too. Will defiantly be coming back here!

Annamarie R.

Yelp
We love you Haggos - clean healthy food - plenty of tomatillo salsa, no stingyness - great people - fresh air seating - pretty, tall palm trees
google avatar

Antoinette C.

Yelp
Absolutely the best taquitos I've ever had! Super nice people, great service! Great atmosphere. Cane in with a large group and they were happy to serve us!
google avatar

Martin D.

Yelp
Very good food. The shrimp tacos are excellent. The only thing that I would change are the tortillas used for the tacos. Very stiff and dry.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
A cool little spot that is a little pricey but for what you get, seems worth it! Crayons and paper include for the little one... so everyone was happy, especially with the chips and salsa. Also the breakfast taco grass fed beef was tasty and HUGE! Also the pork burritos was tasty.

Aidan S.

Yelp
I got the beef burrito bowl and it was absolutely amazing! The portion size was very generous and it tasted so good. The best part was that I felt energized after because the food was fresh and healthy. The staff was great as well
