I feel bad writing this review because I've always enjoyed Haidilao and I was proud that we have an authentic Chinese hotpot presence in San Diego, but my most recent experience was disappointing. We ordered two soup bases, a plate of 8 thin slices of beef, a plate of mixed veggies, a few slices of luncheon meat, fish cakes, and 6 quail eggs. The total? A staggering $110! I left feeling like I hadn't eaten a proper meal with so little food!
The salad bar was also underwhelming, featuring items like Mexican tortilla chips in an authentic Chinese restaurant--quite absurd. The fruit is good, but then, it's NOT free and added to the overall cost regardless if you want it or not.
In the past, we were often offered a kid's meal, but this time the waiter never mentioned it to us. My child did receive a toy every time we went, but honestly, we were there for a good meal, not a toy.
Finally, my wife had water on the floor where she was sitting, which reflects a lack of attention to detail despite that attention to detail is something that Haidilao is famous and proud of.
Overall, it feels like Haidilao is going downhill.
If you're looking for a better hot pot experience, I would recommend Shanchenglameizi in Convoy st instead.
It offers a much more authentic and satisfying hot pot experience at a fraction of the cost, with a salad bar full of interesting, authentic Chinese snacks and goodies.
And please, no tortilla chips. I love them myself, but putting them there in an authentic Chinese restaurant is an insult to the hot pot culture and your brand!
