The 23 Best Chinese Restaurants In London - London - The Infatuation

"Hainan House feels like something of an introvert. It’s sandwiched between an organic grocer and a kebab shop. Only this low-key southern Chinese restaurant in Angel is making food that tastes far from run-of-the-mill. Swing by alone and get some sticky cola chicken at the waist-high counter or thaw out with friends alongside the mini coconut chicken hot pot." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak, daisy meager, sinead cranna

The 23 Best Restaurants In Islington - London - The Infatuation

"Hainan House, a southern Chinese spot, brings a relaxed glow to a hectic part of Islington, with a quiet dining room and plates of house-poached poussin. The subtle flavours here aren’t out to shout in your face but, rather, creep up on you. And the mini coconut chicken hotpot is, for all intents and purposes, poultry penicillin." - jake missing, sinead cranna

The 23 Best Restaurants In Islington

"You can’t help but lower your tone in Hainan House, it’s just a gentle kind of place. The southern Chinese spot brings a warm, relaxed glow to a hectic part of Islington and its light touch cooking does the same. Settling into the quiet dining room with a plate of house-poached poussin feels like a lesson in exhaling. The subtle flavours here aren’t out to shout in your face but, rather, creep up for you. The wobbling silken tofu in a sharp vinegar dressing is a pleasing and paired-back combination, while mini coconut chicken hotpot is, for all intents and purposes, Chinese penicillin." - jake missing

The Best Things We Ate This Week - London - The Infatuation

"House-poached poussin “After a couple of visits to Hainan House I have a sneaking suspicion that this quiet little Chinese spot in Angel is going to become a personal favourite. The house-poached poussin was something I could eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The meat was improbably moist and it came in a gently flavoured pool of gingery broth, and a pile of pickled pineapple. With a bowl of nutty mushroom fried rice on the side, it was a perfect plate.” - JM" - Jake Oliver, Rianne Shlebak, Sinead Cranna

Hainan House - Review - Islington - London - The Infatuation

"In a world of increasingly Infinite Jest-like restaurant concepts and boisterous big-name chefs, Hainan House feels like something of an introvert. As with many compelling places in London, you’ll find it sandwiched between an organic grocer and kebab shop. Only this low-key southern Chinese restaurant in Angel is making food that tastes far from run-of-the-mill. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pause Unmute There’s a soothing, pine wood feel to the 12-or-so table space, and service is as kind and light touch as the chilled house-poached poussin is tender. Which is to say, very. While the gentle flavours of pear with chilli salt or wobbling silken tofu in a vinegar dressing may not blow you away at first pass, Hainan House has a canny way of creeping up on you. Swing by alone and get some sticky cola chicken wings at the waist-high counter or thaw out with friends alongside the mini coconut chicken hotpot. It is, for all intents and purposes, Chinese penicillin. Aromatics play a big part here and, while a bit more oomph could be added to some dishes, the array of house-made sauces make up for it. The yellow chilli is punchy, the garlic ginger an addictive Carmex competitor, and the garlic-laden chilli oil chuggable. Little things like this matter, and it’s no surprise that a restaurant as thoughtful as Hainan House gets that. Food Rundown Cola Chicken Wings These sweet and sticky wings are a crowd-pleaser. The batter is crisp and they’re nice enough on their own, but it’s the mango chilli sauce on the side that really brings this dish up a few notches. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Beef Jerky Rice Noodle Soup A classic combination of beef, pickled mustard greens, bean sprouts, peanuts, and coriander. All the textures and flavours that you could want are here, and the noodles have a satisfying bounce to them. The broth could have a little more depth to it, but it’s a good noodle soup. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch House-Style Poached Poussin This take on Hainanese chicken is the star of the show. The chilled poussin is carefully poached before jumping in ice like a Wim Hof enthusiast. It’s incredibly tender and sits in a light soy-ish vinegar sauce alongside cubed pineapple. Brilliantly made and excellent to share. Although we’ve happily put it away with rice alone. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Coconut Chicken Mini Hotpot A (controlled) flame on a table is always an exciting thing, so seeing this little pot of crystal broth bubble away creates some drama, but this is a lovely, nourishing dish, rather than something theatrical. The coconut broth is sweet and the accoutrements—jujube, lotus seeds, papaya, rehydrated mushroom—add a fruity sugar to the occasion. The savoury comes from the chicken on the bone and the moreish garlic and ginger sauce. Get it with a bowl of rice on the side. Mushroom Fried Rice Earthy, perfectly cooked rice with chunks of mushroom in it. What’s not to like? photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch" - Jake Missing

Hainan House just keeps getting better every time I visit! The food is healthy and wholesome and the menu has really improved in lovely way. It's light, nourishing, and delicately flavoursome in a way that each dish feels thoughtful rather than heavy. You can really tell how much care and thought goes into each dish creation. I would absolutely recommend the taro bowl dessert. I thought it would be like one of our typical chinese soup desserts/similar to chendol but it was something I've never had before and is refreshing, comforting, not too sweet, and a really innovative dessert. 💯

Everything was delicious! The coconut chicken soup was sweet and comforting, the tofu puff with musroom was so tasty, the spicy persimmon dish was unique and full of flavour, and the spicy quail eggs were soft and yummy. Great service and cosy atmosphere. Highly recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The bestttt!!!!!

The team is amazing and very attentive. The food is delicious and the portions are generous. We had the beef stew claypot and the coconut chicken. They were both super flavorful. We had the best time. Thank you xx

What a charming place this is. I think the lunch menu is good value. I didn’t make the right choice, as the chicken rice is a quarter pouissin so there is hardly any meat. It hadn’t registered it wasn’t a chicken which would have been more meaty. Loved the accompaniments. I wasn’t sure re the consistency or flavour of the sauce. Beautifully presented and need to go back and try more dishes.

This place feels like a warm hug. The staff are kind, the food is simple but incredible and the atmosphere is perfect. The lunch deal is great value, especially for London. Try the homemade chilli oil, it's my new obsession.

Stumbled across this place exploring Angel. Excellent Hainan style food, tender chicken and flavourful rice, not too salty or oily like some other establishments, and the zao po cu claypot was very good, flavours straight from Hainan island. The yi bua was great, with new and interesting flavours compared to the traditional ginger and coconut flavour. Service was excellent and staff were knowledgeable and friendly! Prices were resonable as well.

Highly recommended gemstone! This may be THE best chinese restaurant in the Greater London area. It feels like you eat at home. Service is extremely kind and personal. Food quality was absolutely top-notch! We had the pork belly clay pot as well as the whole fish sea bream. Both were of exceptional quality of ingredients as well as perfectly cooked as well as nicely presented. The restaurant itself is a very modern aesthetic interpretation of subtle chinese influence. Go here - you won't regret it!

Cute little unique restaurant serving hainan food - with so many Chinese restaurants offering similar type of Chinese cuisine in London, this one goes a completely separate way to showcase some what more delicate and gentle side of Chinese cuisine which was quite nice. We started off with lettuce wrapped rice, fried chicken and aubergine. All dishes were prepared with care and not too overpowering in taste yet still had interesting flavours coming through with the use of chilli’s and marinades. For mains we went for the duck which was succulent and juicy, simple and fresh dish where as the pork was more full bold flavour. Staff were friendly and it was a pleasure to try a new type of Chinese cuisine.
