A south‑side stalwart where dinner combos, tomato‑beef soup, and crisp crab rangoon draw multigenerational regulars. Travel guides and recent reviews note its steady quality and old‑school dining room—think aquariums, lanterns, and friendly, joking servers.

Great family dinner! Our waitress was the absolute sweetest! She took her time with everything answered any questions and encouraged us to try their soups, which were all delicious, with our meals! Our meals were wonderful, appetizers were great! Our son really enjoyed getting to sit next to the fish tank! Restaurant and staff all great, we will be back!

Just a lil Chinese spot open on Sundays! Great food and service! I will be back! Thanks

I had the empress chicken, it was very good with just the right amount of spice. Will definitely go back.

Food is good, but the people working there not so much. The owner/woman sat across from me with a group of young Asian men staring at me from the time I was seated until the time I left. She even moved closer to my table to stare at me. When I took a bite of my food, she took a bite of hers. When I sipped my water, she took a sip of her as well. A Causasian woman made an inappropriate remark about a certain race. The Asian male hostess or waiter creeped me. He always comes on a little too strong as a waiter or whatever he is. I have eaten there a few times, but due to the last negative experience, I will not return. There are other Asian restaurants in Fort Wayne whose food and service are better and more professional. They keep decreasing their days for this restaurant. I hope they will go out of business soon.

There are a lot of Chinese places around town but few compare to Hainan House on Bluffton Rd. Go there for dine-in for the best experience. We have been coming here for years and they never disappoint! They have the best egg rolls in town. No joke. The staff is always very friendly and the food is always very good. I like the Mu Shu Pork. I order it with no pancakes to avoid some gluten in the meal. I highly recommend that you check this place out ASAP.

Hainan House is about the only 1st-generation (1980s) Vietnamese immigrants' restaurant that I actually respect lol. Yes. The owners are Vietnamese. Doesn't mean they don't make very authentic Chinese food though, and the place itself is very much a Chinese restaurant. I'm not going to discuss Vietnamese-Chinese history or demographics right now. Anyway, back to what matters. Hainan House is a VERY traditional place doing your classic Chinese-takeout dishes, but it takes pride in its cuisine and tastes nothing like, say, Bamboo Garden. This is original Chinese-American cuisine in its best form, untarnished by runaway capitalism and the ever-growing desire for cheap ingredients. All of their takeout dishes are what I would call "reliable": Nothing too special and basically what you expect, but always better than most, and a safe bet for when you just want to eat something without worrying about it too much. And of course, no discussion of Hainan House would be complete without mentioning their soups. You have your takeout favorites like egg drop, wonton and hot-and-sour, but also their house special the "tomato beef". These are basically exactly what they sound like, but in a way that makes you realize the usual kinds should be the weird one: The hot-and-sour soup is much tangier and has a far deeper crunch of woodear mushrooms, while the egg drop soup, my favorite, is thick and clear with pieces of chicken, vegetables, and skin. It's a purely chicken-based soup with drops of egg, as the name entails, not... whatever the neon-orange stuff at Double Dragon and co. is supposed to be. Egg doesn't look like that, yo. Another forte of Hainan House is their classic appetizers, in particular the "beef strings". Ultimately, it's just barbecue beef in a fancier form, but it's better than any beef skewer I've seen. The shrimp toasts are worth trying too, and they have the best crab rangoons in town. Not that it's a high bar to clear. Hainan House's strongest point though, has to be their dinner combos. So they are the only place I've seen in the USA that engage in what would be called "cơm phần" in Vietnam: A shared dinner whose amount of food would scale with the number of people joining, but each person still gets their own dish while free to have what everybody else is getting. Of course, in classic Asian fashion, this has to be done with lots and lots of rice. They call it "Dinner A" which, eh, could've come up with a better name. What this all means is that they are the perfect choice for gatherings between close friends, though. Everyone sits on a round table. Regarding their Vietnamese cuisine, one of their signature dishes is mì xào giòn or deep-fried lo mein noodles (yes, we Vietnameses deep-fry stuff too). They are the only ones offering this in Fort Wayne and I must say, their rendition is pretty good. Their Vietnamese coffee is also nice, but like every other Vietnamese place in America unless otherwise stated, don't order the phở here lol. TL;DR Best Chinese place in the Fort, especially for families.

Google
First time eating here and absolutely loved it. We were passing through fort wayne and decided we wanted some Chinese. Based on previous reviews we chose Hainan House, and we are glad we did!

Google
Fantastic little restaurant, super friendly! They love to make you laugh, and they get to know their regulars. I can not recommend this hidden Gem more! The Princess Chicken was delicious, and their jasmine tea hit the spot.

Yelp
Hainan House is an "old school Chinese" restaurant. The food is always very good. I love their egg rolls and crab rangoon. Their main dishes are good and I always have enough for lunch the next day (especially if I order egg rolls, soup, and crab rangoon). Service is always very good. This place is a quiet, old school restaurant with solid food.

Yelp
The service here is really good! The ambiance is 1970 Chinese retro! The bathroom, the floor and the tables are clean and very suitable! The food that we had was questionable!! We sat down and the pretty looking crab Rangoon was bland and tasteless. My wife's garlic chicken was not exciting at all! I ordered the "crispy duck" which was dry and tasted like it was fried in rancid oil. It had the texture of duck that had been frozen or left in the fridge for a week and was reheated. It gets worse! When we got our little condiment jars I removed the lid of the sweet sauce and a dead fly appeared! It had been dead for a while! It gets worse! My wife found a little curly hair in her perfectly cooked rice! Most of the 64 reviews are years old.... They replaced the sauce promptly and apologized about the curly hair....nuff said!

Yelp
Really good Chinese food... The restaurant is a bit dated, but it's very clean, the service is excellent, and the food is good (plus inexpensive). I personally like China Palace a bit more overall, but Hainan House is a close second for Chinese food in SW Fort Wayne.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was great, seemed to have lots of regulars. Food was nothing special, typical americanized asian food. Ambiance is quaint.

Yelp
My mom & I would visit for lunch or dinner at Hainan House. Chicken is SO DELICIOUS!!

Sheila N.

Yelp
This is what I consider a traditional, "American Chinese" restaurant. The service was excellent, and the food while not super innovative and exciting, is just what one expects at an American-Chinese restaurant, and it's well prepared, served hot and very tasty. Service is prompt and polite and the restaurant is welcoming and clean. Our waiter was friendly and prices are reasonable. There good reasons that Hainan House has been around for has been around for as long as it has, and one of those reasons is that it's dependably good. Hainan House is probably my favorite lunch spot on this side of Fort Wayne.

Anthony Z.

Yelp
The lunch special before tip was $10.21. It comes with a pot of hot tea that was very good, choice of soup (I got hot and sour - the best I've had), very good fried rice, entree (I got the velvet shrimp - six huge shrimp cooked perfectly and lots of fresh crispy vegetables. All very good), butter/sugar cookie for dessert, and the fortune cookie. The owners are very friendly, and the restaurant is very clean. You can tell they take pride in their work.

Brian H.

Yelp
Always excellent food and customer service; I have been a customer for 20 years and Hainan House never disappoints.

Yelp
Great egg rolls, general Tao's chicken great, hot and sour soup yum, great for take out or sit down

Yelp
The best sit down Chinese restaurant in town! Hot food good prices and very nice service.

Yelp
Some of the best Chinese food in Fort Wayne me and my family love it they have great customer service the hot and sour soup is just amazing

Yelp
Hands down the best Chinese food in Fort Wayne, and the staff are very pleasant and helpful. The Crab Rangoon are delicious!
google avatar

Noy O.

Yelp
The tomato beef soup is too sweet :( *Don't get it if you're diabetic.* The egg drop soup is very good - more substance and personality- had pieces of chicken- not run of the mill egg drop found elsewhere. Crab rangoon best I've had in a while- onion/garlic flavor makes them stand out among competitors. Anyway, I recommend! Try them!

Yelp
There was a nice atmosphere inside the service was prompt and friendly. The pho was really good and the pot sticker sauce had a great flavor.

Mr. G.

Yelp
Hmm... Don't really understand all the rave reviews here. The food we got was just... basic. Nothing stood out.

Audrey S.

Yelp
This was my first time eating at Hainan House and it was amazing! My dad and I got the dinner combo and it came with soup, wine, 4 appetizers and a main entree. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was so fast!

Yelp
I really enjoyed my experience at Hainan House! This was a date night stop on a Friday evening after having a craving for some good Chinese food. You can find the restaurant in the Foster Park Plaza off Bluffton Road. The outside is nothing to look at, but the interior is nicely decorated with traditional decorations. The staff is always super attentive and happy to have you dining there. If you don't want to dine in, you can also order takeout! The menu is not lacking options. We decided to order a special for two. It included plum wine, soup, an appetizer platter and two entrees with rice; tons of food for a great price! For our entrees we chose cashew chicken and Mongolian beef. The Mongolian beer was great, but I was not a huge fan of the cashew chicken. Overall, it was a good meal for a great price. Stop into Hainan House if you are having a hankering for Chinese food!

Yelp
The best Chinese food in Fort Wayne. The pot stickers are hands down the best I've ever had ANYWHERE. Every time I'm in Fort Wayne I try to visit. The decor is typical 60s Chinese restaurant with red lanterns and murals, but it does have a great fish tank in the center. The staff are all super friendly. You will find the typical menu items but prepared better than you've had before. All the meals come with soup, both the egg drop and tomato beef choices are very good. I'm always here with my family and we finally learned to order a few entree's and a few appetizers because we usually ended up with far too much food. Some menu highlights are the General Tsao chicken, the pineapple chicken, the crispy rice soup for two is excellent. They also offer Vietnamese selections, several varieties of Pho, and pan fried noodles. If you're ever in Fort Wayne I highly recommend you stop in.

Yelp
Only ate there 2 times but both times have been good. I've only had carry out so I haven't had the dine in experience but I'm sure it's excellent because they're always busy. I ordered pepper steak and fried rice with a side of pot stickers. The pepper steak was tasty and they give you a lot(14$). The potstickers were a little cold but also tasty. I also added a full menu photo because the yelp app menu is just a portion of what they have to offer.

Sam W.

Yelp
I so badly wanted this restaurant to be great. Our family lives in walking distance, And has tried it three times. All three times were very disappointing. I'm sorry, but I cannot recommend Hainan House.

Yelp
This is an amazing authentic restaurant. The service was amazing. The food was great. This place deserves a lot of credit.

Yelp
Our favorite Chinese food restaurant. The place is clean and simply decorated, the service is quick and friendly. And the food is perfect every time. As I said it is our favorite go to place when Chinese food is on our radar

Yelp
Went for lunch w my mom. Mushu pork & shrimp w vegetables off the luncheon menu came with hot & sour soup. We also shared an order of crab rangoon. Food was good, decent portions & reasonable prices. Nothing special here but the service. Outstanding waiter worked the whole dining room with impeccable timing. Service was 5 stars & food was 2 1/2. Stereotypical Chinese restaurant decor & clean. I would eat here again but definitely not a first choice in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Old school Chinese restaurant. Everything is red, fish tank in the middle of the room. Your meal comes with all the trimmings, soup and an almond cookie. The food is great traditional "American" Chinese. It reminds me of when I was a child, in the 70's and my parents took me out for Chinese. Definitely give it a try. Right in front of the newly renovated Clyde theater.

Yelp
This was a surprise find for us. During a recent trip home, we wanted to take my mom out to lunch, and she (out of the absolute blue for her) decided she wanted Chinese food. Having grown up in the area, I held out little hope there would be a restaurant that met my high standards for Chinese, but I consulted The Yelp, and based on ratings, we decided to come here. Like most places, they offered the standard list of Chinese dishes, but we noticed that they offered family style dinners as well for a fixed price. The entree list is a bit shorter there, but included in the price is plum wine, appetizers and soup. After exchanging pleasantries with the waitress (and being impressed with their patience with mom, who was pretty much out of her element!), we ordered the Snow White chicken, Princess Beef, and Sweet and Sour chicken. Mom was both amused and delighted with not only the amount of food (which was generous) but also the flavors (which were quite good). We had plenty leftover for her to take home. We also enjoyed that the owners seem to cultivate relationships with their regulars. While we were dining, another group came in (four ladies roughly my mom's age) and sat near us. While we were there, we noticed they had taken time to make little craft gifts for the owners, which appeared to surprise and delight them. Very fun to watch. Long story short, this will be one place that we return to whenever we're back home visiting Mom.

Yelp
This place has been open since my childhood, and for good reason. Their food is delicious, and has flavors that take it a step above your average Chinese take out. My biggest love is their crab Rangoon are savory, not sweet, which makes them probably the only place in town I like them. And their spicy stir fried green beans are a must-order.

Deanna S.

Yelp
I love this place! The people are wonderful. I get carryout more than dine-in, which is sad because the dine-in experience is great. Everything is yummy, but if you are a noodle fan like me, get the beef fried noodles. So delicious.
google avatar

Claudia F.

Yelp
My husband and I love Hainan house. Their food is always consistent and super delicious. The service is always spot on. The owners are kind and take pride in their establishment. One thing that I really admire about this place is the the food is not super salty. It very clean inside and they are taking proper steps to keep it up to par during the pandemic. We will continue to support Hainan House! We recommend the Egg Foo Yung, any soup they have, egg rolls, fried rice... basically everything is amazing!!
google avatar

Christopher H.

Yelp
I have tried this place twice now. Both times, I have been severely disappointed! The first time I thought everything was Soupy and just swimming in poor tasting sauce. Most recently I have sesame chicken and crab rangoon. The chicken was fried so hard it was unpleasant to eat, and the sauce was plentiful and overpowering again. Th eCrab rangoons were simply cheese rangoon, and the cheese was very greasy and runny. I just can not recommend this place!

Michael D.

Yelp
Awesome service and food as always. They even box up your leftover food for you. Very well run establishment and quick too.
google avatar

Aundrea S.

Yelp
Hainan House had the typical Chinese decor with lots of red and black and Asian pictures and had Asian music playing softly in the background. Service was prompt and friendly. Tea was excellent and complimentary. Food was good. Not blow-you-away good but...Good. I ordered chicken with vegetables which was around $9-11. I wanted chicken and broccoli but after hearing it was a $2 up charge too add mushrooms I thought chicken and veggies a better way to go. Food was served hot and quick. I wouldn't make a special trip but if I wanted Chinese and was in the area, this would be a safe bet.

J E.

Yelp
We popped in for lunch today and it was really good! Our sever was very friendly and nice. The beef strings and crab Rangoon were perfect! We noticed they were taking care to space out seating to fit social distancing guidelines, which is comforting and smart. Everything was spotlessly clean, including the giant fish tank in the middle of the dining room. We look forward to dining here again and trying more of the very comprehensive menu. Thank you for a terrific Valentine's Day lunch! We appreciate you!

Karen M.

Yelp
My family went on a mission to try all the Chinese restaurants in town and find the best and this place won. It is fabulous - we thought it was better than way more expensive places like Wu's and Han Dynasty. And the service was top notch. It may not look like much from the outside but the food inside will amaze you.
google avatar

Ashley Marie E.

Yelp
How have I not reviewed this place yet? Hainan House has been a mainstay in our takeout routine for the past 5 years! We love Hainan House because it is consistently great, Chinese takeout food. Some of our favorites are the sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken, beef and broccoli, egg rolls and the wonton soup! The portion sizes are always perfect, and the food is always fresh. We've never dined in the establishment, but walking in to pick up our order is always a treat. The staff are very pleasant, and the interior is decorated very festively.

Yelp
Came here on the recommendation of a local foodie. I was looking to have to be good enough to replace a restaurant that I used to go to in Georgia. This place is not better than the place I wanted to replace but it is still better than buffet or carry out only places. Their hot and sour soup is the same as what your can get at a buffet. The place I was looking to replace had the best hot and sour that I have ever had. The Crab Rangoon, which was $2 for four days huge ones, is hand made and the best I have ever had. The entrees were good. We went during lunch. The prices were $8 and you get soup and fried rice with your entree. The lunch prices for egg rolls were $0.60. Dinner price was $1 I saw people ordering Pho and it looked good. I will return and I want to try their Pho.

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Been there a few times, wasn't blown away but wasn't grossed out by meat quality. A step up from generic chinese takeout.
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
This is our go-to neighborhood Asian restaurant -- it's an older location, but always very clean. Service is top-notch, and the food is always hot and tasty. While there are days that the food is better than others, overall, it's worth the stop. If you haven't been, try the eggrolls, some of the best in town!
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
They are friendly here (usually) and the food is good but they have no vegan options and are not vegan accommodating. A Chinese restaurant should be able to make at least a few meat and dairy free options.

Kimberly L.

Yelp
Been coming here since I was a kid, same staff, same great taste.. every single time. The beef fried rice is amazing, best crunchy egg rolls, the chicken wings super crispy and delicious, the hot and sour soup is my to go always, the staff is always so sweet. Grew up eating Hainan, now my kids will too. Love this place.
google avatar

Heather T.

Yelp
Hainan House has amazing lunch specials! I'm always very impressed with the service, complimentary tea, and fried rice. When you walk in you will notice that it is clean and quiet. The menu is pretty extensive and covers a wide range of items. I love their beef pho and Vietnamese iced coffee. Their sesame chicken and crab ragoon is also amazing. All and all this is a solid place for good food and reasonable prices. Side note: they do takeout too!
google avatar

Corey W.

Yelp
The place is over all a good place to eat. The first time I was there I enjoyed the chicken wings, crab ragoon and sesame seed chicken. The fried rice was not good at all. Tasted under cooked and lacked favor. I decided to go again and give it another try. I ordered the exact same thing (due to my Hainan being limited). This time the fried rice was great, but the chicken wings were much larger and tasteless. The crab ragoon was oily and tasted more like chicken than the wings. Yes I still ate it all, but for a Chinese restaurant they lack the consistency that I come to expect and love. And yes.... I will go again.
google avatar

Latasha G.

Yelp
I decided to try this spot out and so glad that I did. The food has exceeded my expectations!! I especially love the egg drop soup! This will definitely be my go to place when k have a taste for Chinese
google avatar

Tanya V.

Yelp
I really enjoy the ambience of this restaurant, it feels peaceful. Staff is friendly, portions are plenty. I love the sweet and sour soup, as well as General Tso's chicken and the plum wine. Can't wait to have the wine again after I have this baby. :)
google avatar

Lauren J.

Yelp
I've been eating in Fort Wayne for years and this is my first time eating here. I've been missing out for years. Spectacular food. Spectacular service. This was actually some of the best Chinese food that I've had in years. I'll be coming here on my trips to Fort Wayne in the future.
google avatar

Mandy M.

Yelp
Awful service. We ordered our food and was told twenty minutes. We showed up and waited another thirty only to be told that they didn't have the duck we ordered and asked if we would like to order something else. Really? I would love to wait around another thirty minutes while the rest of my food gets cold and I've already waited for fifty minutes. Unbelievable! They also forgot our soup, noodles and egg rolls. When I tried to have them make them they argued and said I was wrong!

Jim W.

Yelp
Very good Chinese food. Maybe the best in Fort Wayne. Dine in or carry out times are great. Prices are fair and portions are fair. They do a good business, so may need to check about internal dining during covid restrictions.
google avatar

Torian C.

Yelp
Favorite Chinese restaurant in Fort Wayne! Great and fast service. Lunch prices are awesome and dinner prices are definitely good considering the amount of food you get. They also have pho now which is great for a chilly winter day!!
google avatar

Karen B.

Yelp
Excellent, attentive service. Tastes fresh and made to order. Dinners include choice of soup, almond cookies and hot tea. I will be back.
