Good evening Google family. I patronized for the first time. I love this store. The oldest black owned book store in Philadelphia. Yvonne Blake is the owner and CEO. My friend, Yolanda Weaver, had a book signing here today, her children's book is Brown like Me. Her book signing was very successful. Her book is now available for purchase in the store. I met a lot of nice people and networked. I purchased a 2026 calendar. The value for the money is outstanding. My experience was great and I will come back to look around some more. It's one of the best bookstores i have ever been to. The staff are pillars full of knowledge and books. The selection is diverse, and they are including new literature as well. Shouts out to the entire kids section of books as well

Went in, haven't been here in some time. Glad I stopped in, purchased two books, had some great dialogue. The best Gem in West Philadelphia, and a Historic Landmark.

It was perfect! We found just what we wanted. My granddaughter got three books immediately upon arriving. I was able to purchase a book for my great nephew also! The prices are reasonably! We'll be back soon!

Great selection of children's book from black authors. I did get to really check out the other genres but seems to be a really good variety. Friendly and engaging staff. Good prices too. Definitely my new book spot.

When i came from NoCal this was #1 on my place to visit. Located in W. Phill, a short walk from the train. I went to get ONE book for my mom...i left with a education lesson from a young man and (4) books for myself... Oh and some earrings for my sister. 💚💙

Hakim's Bookstore is truly a West Philadelphia icon. Hakim's daughter now runs the store, and she has made it known around the world for its incredible collection, including many books you simply won't find anywhere else. The store is a powerful reminder that Black people read and stand against the ongoing erasure of our history. If you have the opportunity, please stop by and support her. She's keeping her father's dream alive.

This is one of the prime examples of why independent brick-and-mortar bookstores are so important. Booksellers can curate something really special that can't be replicated by going on Amazon or walking into a corporate superstore. Hakim's is a great example of this. Hakim's has hands down THE BEST children's book section for Black children. They had so many children's books that I'd never even seen, along with the classics. It actually made me a little emotional to see how many wonderful books are now available for Black kids -- I wish we'd had these when I was a child. If you have a Black or brown child (or know a Black or brown child) you need to go to Hakims.

This is a wonderful bookstore, I make sure to visit whenever I'm in West Philadelphia. Really friendly staff, great selection of books. Pick up a book from here and enjoy it at nearby Malcolm X Park.

I used to frequent this place in the 90a when I was an intern at PECO. Great collection of books and the service was spectacular. When I see and read what's going on today, I take pride knowing that I've already learned about the social implications of systemic racism and horrible injustices on Melaninated people.

Such friendly staff! I ordered online and Yvonne was great at communicating with me about the available items in my order. Since I am moving, they had no problem with me picking up my order in the store.

Honestly one of the best bookstore experiences I've ever had, friendly and genuine conversation with brother Chris, who helped to explain their process of sending books to inmates. Definitely going to continue supporting & showing love. Beautiful to see a black owned business still going 60+ years strong!

We were there in West Philly on 1/3/2020 after we left the African American museum Lest We Forget. This is the oldest book store in West Philadelphia black-owned and operated over 60 years. I can't remember the young black man we spoke with as soon as we came through the door. He politely greets everyone that comes through Hakim's door. The young black man is a very knowledgeable man who can pretty much answer any questions you may have concerning Hakim's Book store daily and yearly operation, but most importantly, the information includes what Hakim's book store does for the community. So if you are ever in Philly, do stop by Hakim's book store and look around and please do speak with the very tall young black man behind the counter, very positive Brother. Nice little book store on 52nd street business corridor. If you are looking to support a family black owned business that has been in the community for decades please support Hakim's. They have a great children's section and can get you any book you need. Excellent customer service and they also have some great deals on discounted books in the store. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
