Escape the City: The Best Day Trips from Tokyo

"An attractive French-style garden with gorgeous flowers, it’s conveniently situated between two very different art museums, making it a natural pause on a culture-filled day." - Louise George Kittaka

📍 Hakone Gora Park 箱根強羅公園 @ Hakone, Japan 🇯🇵 We visited Hakone Gora Park on 20 November 2025, and the experience was relaxing and refreshing. We purchased the combined entry ticket for 1,600 yen, which includes admission to both Gora Park and the Hakone Museum of Art — a convenient and good-value option if you plan to visit both attractions on the same day. Gora Park is a peaceful hillside garden with open spaces, seasonal flowers, gentle walking paths, and beautiful mountain scenery. The park has a spacious layout with spots like the fountain plaza, glasshouse, craft studios, and rest areas where you can sit and enjoy the calm surroundings. It’s an easy and pleasant stroll, perfect for a relaxing break in Hakone. The park connects smoothly with the route to the Hakone Museum of Art, making it a practical first stop before continuing your exploration of the Gora area. A calm and scenic hillside park — beautifully maintained, relaxing to walk, and great value with the 1,600 yen combo ticket including the Hakone Museum of Art. 🌿🌸✨

Quaint little park a (very steep) hill away from Gora station. Entrance is free with the Hakone Freepass. A pity that there wasn't much to see in December as it wasn't flowering season, but there were still beautiful sights and greenery around, and you can also spend time perusing the small stores around the entrance! If we had time, we would have signed up for one of the many arts and craft workshops

You can enter free with Hakone Free Pass. Not very big but really scenary. There are lots of maple tree with mountain view of the sky is clear. Is raining when I visit but it is still very very nice. There are more than 10 craft activities available.

A very well layed out park with French origins. You don’t have to walk miles to see things but there is much to see and enjoy. Like any park or garden it does depend on the seasons as to what you see. The park is in Hakone high up in the hills which creates for a very unique climate and therefore an opportunity to see things which you would not see elsewhere at that time of year. It has a really interesting craft centre, properly organised and run to quite a high level. The shops and restaurants are not tacky in any way or ridiculously expensive. Loved the rose ice cream real value for money especially with the coupon at the entrance! Toilets and other facilities are way up to standard nothing old and just about to break or smelly!! And clean!!! Easy to get to with ample parking areas. Station nearby if needed!

This is a beautiful French garden with a little Japanese touch, great combination. I saw very cool and interesting species of plants. Highly recommended in addition that it is included in your Hakone free pass.

Nice small park in Gao. Lovely trees and well pruned. There is a variety of craft shops within the park which you can find some great local souvenirs and gifts.

The park is small but very beautiful, designed in a European style, with a fountain and a café in the center. It's a 15-minute walk from Gora Station. If you plan to extend your Hakone Loop tour, there's no need to return to Gora Station after the park. You can exit the park directly at Koen-Kami Station or Koen-Shimo Station and continue your ride. The entire park is small and can be walked around in an hour. Although the park is on the classic Hakone Lopp, it's difficult to combine both in one day, especially for those visiting Hakone from Tokyo for just one day. Ideally, spend at least two days in Hakone, allowing you to leisurely visit the museums and parks rather than rushing the entire route to finish before dark.

Enjoy the silence and peacefulness in the Gora Park! Stopped by as part of the Hakone Free Pass and the place didn’t disappoint! Grab a coffee or lemonade and sit down by the fountain, walk in the green house or just wander around - this place is energising and making the hot weather more bearable!

Yelp
We drove a car here and parked next to the entrance for 300 yen. The entrance is 550 yen for adults and free to kids under 12. The park had several cherry blossom trees, if you come during the season. There was also a lovely fountain, cute little gift shop, and an ice cream shop too. I opted not to bring strollers in because there were quite a bit of steps. And not all steps are the same height, so be careful. Good for a nice quick stroll. We only spent an hour here, and we walked very slowly.

Yelp
Gora Park is a nice, but small scenic endeavor. It's got tea houses, a craft shop, and a mini insect zoo. Nothing too special. It's a 10 minute walk from Gora station and even closer if you take the Hakone Tozan Cablecar to Koenshimo station.

Yelp
We did this as part of our Hakone day, which included going to the Hakone Open Air Museum, Gora Park, Owakudani, and Lake Ashi. I'm glad I came here, but we were also racing to make it to Lake Ashi in time (the last train, gondola and ship really comes at you fast) so if you also decide to stuff your day itinerary, plan to spend a little less time here. It could probably be done in an hour or less. I liked the greenhouse, the gift shop, and the rose garden. Came here in November 2016, so there were less blooms - I could see this place being much more beautiful in the spring. Perhaps the best thing about this stop was that there are several restaurants lining the park to choose from - great place for a lunch before continuing on your Hakone day.
