The Best Burgers in New York City

"This distinctive red frame structure sandwiched between Briarwood and Jamaica Hills serves Bangladeshi, Indian, Afghan, and American food, and everything we’ve tried has been worth ordering. The lamb burger is particularly thick and juicy — no smash burgers here — and it’s cooked to a perfect medium, still pink in the middle. The fries are good, too." - Robert Sietsema, Eater Staff

40 Affordable Places to Eat in NYC

"A few doors down from a mosque, this chandeliered restaurant occupies a lively corner location that was previously a diner. This place upholds diner principals, filling out its menu with Afghan kebab platters as well as Bangladeshi and Indian dishes, plus pizza and excellent hamburgers. The platter shown here features yogurt-marinated chicken and beef kofta with pulao rice, Afghan bread, and salad, with several sauces." - Robert Sietsema

Always happy to be here. I usually ask them the day's special dish, not from their menu. However, I used to get dishes from their menu which were also good. Their food always fresh. Some would find little pricey but I was told they make it after the order has made, unlike Hillside Jamaica quality where food is made beforehand and microwaved. Bathroom is clean and smells great. Owner and employees are great also. Sometimes owner gives us one dish or dessert on the house which I found really sweet. My husband always love their warm baklava they serve. Always a welcoming attitude from the owner. Overall the ambience and service are top notch. Keep up the good work. Parking is also available, since it's in the residential area. My go to place when I crave something desi.

Halal Diner is hands down one of my favorite restaurants in NYC! I first discovered this gem back in 2020, and since then, it has become a weekly tradition for me. Their food is consistently amazing, and I’ve never felt the need to try pizza, sandwiches, or burgers from any other restaurant in the city—Halal Diner sets the bar that high! I’ve worked my way through their entire menu, and I genuinely enjoyed every single dish. Their Afghani dishes, in particular, are exceptional—rich in flavor and cooked to perfection. The quality, taste, and care they put into their food is unmatched. If you’re looking for a place that delivers amazing food every single time, Halal Diner is the spot. Highly recommend it to anyone who values great taste and consistent quality!

Beginning with the location, I do like it’s on the side and provides a bunch of parking. I ordered number 35 combo which was a lamb cut and the chicken tikka. I also wanted to order something that was filling, but not too expensive however they did not really have too many options other than their main entrées The combo itself lacked me, you got to skewers, but the skewers had only four pieces with each piece being quite small. Additionally, the white sauce that they provided tasted a bit sour, I wouldn’t say sour to the point where it’s going bad, but just a flavor itself was a bit too sour. I also ordered like I said something that I wanted to be feeling so I ordered the nuggets and fries as expected, the nuggets and fries were frozen, which is usually understandable and a common thing among the restaurants near us, but the quantity was terrible. I believe there was literally only 10 fries or 15 in the box. I would say, though the price point was decent, but then you come to think about it. The quantity was not up to par as well so take it as you will. The owner was nice and the reason I give it three stars is because the food was edible at least and it taste it all right And there was parking

Food tasted good. We ordered Morog Polao, Kabab platter, Chicken Sandwich combo. Their chicken sandwich is really different and I love it. Chicken sandwich is not typical breaded chicken breast meat. They made the patty with chicken keema. I ordered food before from this restaurant. What I noticed they give more food when dine in than take out.

Google
This restaurant’s chef cooks so well! I ordered Baba Ghanoush with naan for the appetizer. It was good. I had the chicken vindaloo with rice. The vindaloo was salty and not good. My husband had the biryani with lamb which was delicious. I ended up sharing with him and not eating the vindaloo. The chicken and vegetable samosas are sooo yummy! The baklava was excellent for dessert. Only suggestion was for appetizer plates not to be paper because it was messy mixing all the apps with the sauces. Highly recommend this spot.

Google
Amazing food, great price, friendly staff, very clean, and an absolutely gorgeous interior. All the qualities of a 5 star restaurant. Thank you guys, will highly recommend everyone to come here.

Google
Halal Diner has a nice nice mix of south asian dishes that hit the spot. The lamb biryani was cooked well. The chicken tikka was moist and tender. The chicken kofta was moist and tender. The service was excellent and the prices were very reasonable.

Google
The best restaurant for authentic Afghan and Indian food. I have purchased from Halal Diner countless times once it opened and am always happy with the food. Personally, I have tried and would recommend veggie wraps, pizza (made fresh and is very cheesy), zesty fries and Afghan platter.

Yelp
My friends and I tried to hit up this place a couple of months ago, but making it in just before sundown we found they were closing early for Ramadan. We recently were able to go back where we found the staff fun, accommodating, and the food tasty while reasonably priced. Eater has this place listed as one of the best burgers in the city - specifically the lamb burger. They describe it as thick and juicy, which to me is say no more! I love lamb. I did enjoy the burger, but was hoping it would be cooked to medium (I forgot to specify), but mine was well done. The lamb flavor shined through. I will get this again asking for it medium. The fries were medium cut thickness and crispy. Besides this, our group also tried the Shag Panner (I usually see this spelled saag paaner), which was the sleeper hit. Everyone enjoyed the amount given and thought it was delicious. The lamb biryani was also enjoyed by the group with chunks of lamb meat buried inside the rice it had a good flavor. I like they had a bottle of white sauce on the table which is really delicious on everything. Mango Lassi, or intensely flavored milky tea or cans of soda round out the drink options. We tried the rice pudding which was very thick and creamy with a slight orange tint to it.

Yelp
It's not often you will see me give 5 stars to a restaurant, but when the food is excellent, services are above and beyond the place is super nice and clean - it makes you want to make that exception and give Five The restaurant chef really makes amazing food. The food they make with are Zabiah Halal. This means it's fresh, clean-cut meat with no chemicals, etc, used to grow the animals also its cut in the most humane way possible. I really enjoyed their vegetarian dishes and some authentic Bangladeshi dishes they are well known for If you're at the restaurant, I would highly recommend reaching out or asking for Mr Alomger. He is the best person to order your food with. He makes sure your food served is the way to your liking. Enjoy Halal Diner and thank me later

Yelp
I was looking for a nice Kebab/Briyani place on my way from JFK airport to my place in CT. Not too far from the highway. Halal Diner had good reviews and seemed quite close. So, I went in and asked for some recommendations. The owner was very nice and very articulate. He suggested 'Beef Kofta and Lamb Tikka' with Afghani rice and bread. And, Chicken Tikka briyani. (When tried to order Chicken briyani) When I asked about Indian type groceries, he suggested their place near by. That place also had dishes we don't get to see as much in CT. (May be I did not look well). Like the Chicken Gyro. We had a nice conversation and as Dads, we shared some notes. I meant to drive home (1.15 hours) and eat, but got hungry. So, pulled over and tried some of that Lamb Tikka! It was out of this World! (I have to tone it down bcos I got hungry, but it was truly delectable. Let me bring my daughter next time, my friend. She should try the lamb in person!

Yelp
I came to this restaurant because of the viral video I saw of their Fultoli Special Pizza on Facebook. Me and my family had our hopes high with what people said and boy we were happy we came. The Fultoli Special Pizza is amazing. I would highly recommend it. Its not on the menu but on the video the person said to ask Owner Alomgher and he will make it for you. It hit the spot :p

Yelp
I've only ordered delivery from here, but I would like to check out the restaurant itself one day. Food was very FRESH tasting quality. VERY hot even though delivery was far. Packaged great. Flavor was good. Will update after I eat in person there.

Yelp
This is based on a take out order. And honestly, having driven past his place before, it was on our skip list. But I took the chance to try something different. I got the beef and chicken tikka. It was okay. Not the best. Not the worst. The chicken was very dry. I also ordered the baklava for the hubby, because he loves baklava. He couldn't even finish one bite. Maybe others should go by the other reviews which seemed to really like this place. It was eh for me and not a place I'll try again.

Yelp
I bought beef biriyani from them this week. I bought from them before also, and it used to taste like Bangladeshi biriyani with full of flavors. But this time it tasted totally disgusting. I don't know if they changed their chef, or experimented with their recipe or not, but it was not good at all. I think they tried to mimic Premium's beef tehari, but failed miserably! I could not finish the biriyani at all. It was overwhelming with spices. The ratio of meat, rice and spices were extremely off. Also, the prices are unfair here. How can you charge $13+taxes for a box biriyani with a small portion size? And when asked about the prices, they defended themselves by saying, "Hillside stores charges $12 for biriyani"!! LOL, not true. Also most places do not charge tax if you pay by cash, but not here!! They will charge tax even with the cash payment. Although it is very expensive compared to other places, but I would still justify buying from them if the food tasted good, but unfortunately, they lost a customer with their change of recipe, and the unfair pricing.

Yelp
We ordered take-out again and even though they had new menu prices jacked up a little bit, the food was good. I think the beef was under-done but it was perfect for me. Even with the troubling communication, they were friendly and extremely accommodating. Once again, i got the extra sauces that I asked for and the meat was tender and cooked extremely well. They didn't have the Baba ghanoush that I wanted but I ordered the hummus instead. It was a little plan but taste it homemade. Both these items are made in house. The only thing that was disappointing was the garlic non-, it didn't have much garlic flavor and overpriced considering the rest of the menu in comparison. It cured the crave and I was happy.

Yelp
I rarely get take out, it's always a hit or miss experience and besides I cook so it's only something I do if I'm not in the mood to do so. I decided to order Uber Eats from here last night to take a break from my own home cooking. I've seen this place pop up in my neighborhood but never had the chance to try them until now. I ordered the Tikka Rice, Greek salad and Baba ganoush with pita, so I didn't get to try that much. That said, everything was neatly packed and good full portion sizes. The rice was very flavorful and spiced, salad was well dressed, hearty and impressive (probably one of the better salads I've had from a diner) creamy garlicky tasty Baba Ganoush and awesome flat bread. Very fresh ingredients and simply put, everything was delicious!! They added a small salad and a sauce. Everything was so professional, order was well bagged with cutlery/napkin kit and bag was delivered with a lot of care, I think they do their own for the neighborhood. Price was awesome too. They are only diner in name because of their large menu, their food far exceeds from what you would expect. The menu has classic dishes made with their own style and flair. Bravo! Love it and I looking forwards to my next order, which will be larger as they have definitely won my confidence. I don't think I'll be ordering from anywhere else for some time. My only regret was not taking pictures.

Yelp
The owner is very professional and customer service oriented. Halal diner just opened several months ago and they are constantly updating their menu in the way it looks and serves. The food is 100% delicious and amazing. This place will be my "go to" for local halal food. I live just a block away so I mostly walk in for carry out, eat there, or just order on Seamless. You've gotta try this place out and include in your armament of restaurants to have on a weekly basis of choices. Edit: The WAIT time is kind of ridiculous. My first visit was 30+ minutes and my second was ONE HOUR. Both walk in for carry out. Maybe the delivery might be faster, but I doubt it. The food is good, but no food is good enough to be an hour+ wait.
google avatar

Farhana R.

Yelp
Good afghan food. Affordable and clean. They give a lot of meat in the portion. It did take about 30+ mins for the food to come, but I assume that's cause they are making it fresh. I really enjoyed the beef kofta, chicken kofta combo ($9). My husband got beef tikka ($10) which was good too! White sauce is delicious as well. Highly recommended!!
google avatar

Rayhan S.

Yelp
Got the family combo, wish I had a picture left. It's all finished haha. I like the chicken kofta the most yummy
google avatar

Shah B.

Yelp
This new halal diner absolutely rocks! It punches way above its weight in terms of quality of food, taste, affordability and overall service. I've tried a lot of dishes on the menu now and you can't go wrong with any of them. The only thing I would like to note is that the regular beef kebab (not the ground one) was a little dry for my taste but delicious nevertheless. The milk tea and dessert is a must after a great meal. Keep in mind that it takes a little longer for the food to be prepared, but it's definitely worth the wait. Welcome to the neighborhood
google avatar

Moe I.

Yelp
This is solely based on take out. I place my order was told it would take 20 minutes. I went in at exactly 20 mins and it was ready. I asked for extra sauce and only one more white and green sauce were added, no biggie. I get home to try this chicken tikka and chicken kofta.... bammm, a hair in the food. I'm already home and not going back. I also ordered chicken tikka and beef kofta (no hair) it was pretty good. I order pizza for my son, let's just say I should have went to a pizzeria. The pizza seems to be one of those frozen pizza and u just heat it up. I would give this place 4 stars if it wasn't for the hair in my dish.

Shaila S.

Yelp
Very flavorful, good looking yummy food. Staffs are positively welcoming and respectful. Foods are fresh and appetizing. In-sitting arrangements are quite good. I tried their afghani foods verities several times. Highly recommended.

Matthew S.

Yelp
The place had promising reviews, the photos of the food looked fresh and presentable. Actual experience, an hour wait for food, sad looking plate of food, and slow service. I was disappointed so you don't have to be!

Mohammad R.

Yelp
I ordered the Beef Kofta & Chicken Tikka Combo Platter and Butter Chicken. The kababs were very flavorful and cooked to perfection. The rice portion was perfect unlike most places where the portion of rice is a lot more than the meat. One of the best Butter Chicken I have yet had, super creamy and savory. The Diner itself is very spacious and appealing with welcoming staff.

Yelp
Halal Diner is so wonderful, I wish I could hang here everyday. There's a great ambiance to it. Every single thing was very yummy and I can not wait to go back already. Workers are really helpful. They're attentive, polite and always on their game. Halal Diner... What a great spot.

R N.

Yelp
Went there for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. Glad to see a decent halal place in Briarwood. It's a fully renovated, neat and clean place with a very high ceiling and fresh flowers on the table. Food as quite good and tea and rice pudding were delicious. I suggest they add roasted leg of lamb with rice and mint chutney without vinegar to their menu. Bathroom could be cleaner with dry floor but it is accessible. Will definitely go again.

Syed I.

Yelp
We loved the food keep it up service was excellent special salmon and steak with mash/ grilled veg you have to try

Islam A.

Yelp
Very bad customer service and they try to make you buy a lot of food it's such a shame because I was by myself trying to order but they said I have to order at least 30 dollars worth of food in order for delivery
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered from here a little over a month ago and really enjoyed it. Here are five things I recommend about the place 1. If asked, the staff is great about giving recommendations between two items you may be thinking of ordering and they are spot on with recommendations 2. The Kachi biryani is a must- they make a limited quantity of it so once it's sold out; you're out of luck for the day. It's very tasty with the addition of egg and potato, both of which are cooked perfectly. 3. The place is a bit pricey for the area but worth it. You know you're eating fresh food that is delicious and worth a little extra money. 4. Some of the items are not available during Covid, but that's okay- it left me wanting to go back once indoor dining resumes (you'll know if the item is available or not once you place the order). 5. I highly recommend the kebabs. They are bigger than the average kebab at a desi place, so one might be enough to share among two people, especially if you're ordering more food. Also, try the lamb chops if you're into it. They are delicious! Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Kulsum A.

Yelp
The chicken tikka and koftas are really yummy and not dry!! Would come back here again!

Yelp
Ordered delivery through door dash. They accepted my order but when driver arrived saw the restaurant closed. Why would they accept my order then if they are closed?!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Pretty good spot ! Good appetizers his white sauce is AMAZING!!!!!! No ine can beat this dudes white sauce only reason took off a star his beef is usually tough needs to take it off the grill earlier or use meat tenderizer kther then that real good spot to try
google avatar

Jannatul S.

Yelp
They have the worst Afghani kababs. I don't know about the Indian foods but I wouldn't want the Afghani kababs from here ever again. Also the service needs to improve.

Anisa M.

Yelp
The best place for a family outing. Food tastes amazing! There's plenty of option to choose from. The food never disappoints.
google avatar

Yelp
I finally got to stop by this place after passing a by a 1000 times. I was dying for a slice of pizza! The place is really intimate and very clean. It was still early afternoon and 2 sets of people were having dinner. There was a very nice gentleman directly to me when I came in because I have never been there before. Having no clue where to go I asked them if they sell pizza by the slice. I was very happy to know that they did! So I stood by the counter while he placed my slice of pizza into the oven. By that time my mouth was watering and I could not wait to take a bite out of my cheese slice period. When I saw my slice come out the oven, I saw it sizzle a little and they gave me goosebumps since I was so hungry! Lol! The pizza was very light & not overpowering like Italian pizza. Hopefully, the next time I go back, I'll try something else from the menu. I was super happy with the service given & will definitely recommend this place to everyone!! First impression is everything. You only have one opportunity & that will set the pace for future visits!!

Yelp
Takes forever to Deliver food and get the food ready. I wouldn't suggest this place if you're in a Hurry to Eat. 5-10 minutes to them is 30-45 minutes; or maybe even in an Hour.

Shaun R.

Yelp
Top quality food. Very affordable prices. Excellent service. What more can you ask for?

Romano L.

Yelp
ordered from them for the first time this thanksgiving - a whole tuekey to serve the family. the service was great, the turkey was delicious and came with fragrant rice, stuffing and gravy. Can't wait to go back and try lithe things on their menu, highly recommend

Mustafa B.

Yelp
I saw Halal Diner video on Facebook by some foodie bloggers from halaltrip and it got me hungry. So I drove from Brooklyn and got a little bit of everything. Honestly I would go again but wish indoor dinning was open because food would have even tasted better instead of sitting in the car for 40min until we got home.

Kat W.

Yelp
I recently tried this place. The food was okay....it wasn't amazing or anything. The lamb chops were cooked to my brother's liking, which was great. I got the beef burger, which actually was a desi style kabab burger instead of an American style burger (nothing wrong with that, I'm desi myself, haha). The taste was good, the patty had a nice spice to it, it just wasn't what I was expecting or wanted at the time. The kababs we got were fine. The little containers they gave with white sauce were only filled halfway...not sure what that was about. Maybe I'll try their Indian food next time, but I've definitely had better Afghan food in the area.

Sanjana C.

Yelp
Fresh food, decent ambiance. Has a desi touch to every item they offer. We had the family platter, it was good! For dessert we had their Kheer and it was delicious. The staffs are friendly, service is good too!

Sash N.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious! Very fresh and perfectly seasoned. Great attentive staff, great prices, and clean establishment! I will definitely be coming back here again!

Salim K.

Yelp
The Staff doesn't know their menu. The food was bland. Everything needed salt. The only decent thing about this place was that it was nice and clean. Probably because people can get better tasting food elsewhere. Would not recommend

Fahad G.

Yelp
Very good food at a very decent price staff is friendly and quick I got the chicken kofta and the lamb chops very good the chops are tender and fall off the bone perfectly spiced

Mo S.

Yelp
Great food with good price. I order kofta and tikka mix it was great. The good was fresh and it is better than other local places that serve similar dishes.
