"I found Halal King Kitchen in Richmond among the small number of Yemeni-related food spots in the Bay Area, noted for specializing in grilled meats." - Flora Tsapovsky

Google
The best mendi / mandi chicken in the Bay Area. Their tea is also delicious, slightly spiced without being overwhelmed. Make sure you order that. The employees are friendly and nice. I'm from South Bay and will drive all the way here to get my mandi fix.

Waiting around for my friend in front of Halal King kitchen one of the gentlemen inside offered me a hot cup of their amazing sweet tea. What a nice gesture. It was like he was welcoming me into his home. Halal King has been on my radar for some time. How can you not like the idea of Yemen influenced chicken shawarma place next to a gas station! My Chicken Shawarma came with a huge portion of rice, a colorfully salad with red onions, home made hummus and a huge flatbread. Ohh and the yogurt with garlic sauce on the side was super good. My friend ordered Chicken Mendi which was cooked perfectly. Matt says while you are making that trip to the Richmond Costco drop by this little gem and make friends with Halal King Kitchen. You will be glad you did.

I recently stopped by Halal King and I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. Given that it's a take-out spot, the setting is pretty basic. It’s clean and well-organized, making it easy to navigate. It’s not a place to linger, but perfect for a quick grab-and-go meal. I tried their Grilled chicken with rice and side of salad, and it exceeded my expectations. The ingredients were fresh, and the portion size was generous. The flavors were well-balanced, and it felt like a homemade meal. The staff was friendly and efficient, taking my order quickly and ensuring that everything was prepared just the way I wanted. The wait time was minimal. Prices were very reasonable for the quality of food. You definitely get a good bang for your buck here.

Came to Halal King—right next to KKC—just to drop off some clothing recycle in the bin. But I stopped for a falafel wrap, too. While I wait, he gave me a black tea for free and it’s hella good. AND THIS falafel is as long as my forearm! If you choose to give a thumbs-up 👍🏽 or not, I hope you found my review helpful!

Google
So good! Both the cheeseburger and the fries. You can get the burger with ketchup and/or mayo. McDonald’s style fries - the BEST. Comes with a side of toum. The tea they gave us while we waited was also excellent. 10/10 ❤️

Google
Was looking for solid takeout close to the Richmond ferry, and this spot did not disappoint. Chicken Akdah was wonderful — flavorful, fresh, and with a home-cooked feel — and I had some mint tea while I waited! This place goes into my regular rotation in the Bay. Nice to finally have a good halal spot!

Google
Great food great price. The delicious complementary tea sold me. I’ve found myself going out of the way to the gas station they are located near just so I can get a wrap.

Google
This restaurant is under new management and a new chef! They are serving authentic, delicious Yemeni dishes and plates in addition to the previous menu of sandwiches. Oh man, I had one of the chicken plates and it was served with flat bread that he toasted up for me and a free side salad! The chicken was falling off the bone, the sauce is so rich and flavorful, and I love the spicy green sauce that it comes with on the side. The salad was bright, refreshing, and perfect accompaniment to the chicken plate. Please support this amazing spot and support Yemeni cuisine!!

Yelp
I discovered Halal King Kitchen through The Richmond Standard and was very excited to check them out. This place was stuck in my bookmarks list for quite awhile. I decided to order it for lunch one day through Door Dash and I've been back about 5 times now! I told my bf about it and it became his new favorite place! I've tried the beef shawarma plate, chicken mendi, and chicken wrap; while my boyfriend tried the chicken shawarma plate. It was all amazing!!! They even come with garlic sauce and spicy sauce, which are really good! The chicken wrap is super long and about the size of my bf's forearm! Everything we've had so far has been delicious and the portions are really filling. Their hummus also tastes very fresh; I love it! I tried to order their chicken mendi before, but it was sold out and wasn't available at the time I wanted to pick up. I guess it's only available at certain times throughout the day? I finally tried it a few days ago and it was so moist and tender; it fell off the bone! The owners are super friendly and they even give complimentary tea! Halal King is truly a hidden gem and I hope more people find out about it!

Yelp
Really good halal food in the area! The service is quick and friendly, and they stay open pretty late which is super convenient.

Yelp
The food is so fresh and colorful. Seasoned perfectly and delicious. I had the chicken shawarma plate and ate every last bite. The green sauce that comes with it really balances the flavors and takes it up to another level. The people working were extremely friendly and accommodating, they gave me a cup of Yemeni tea to have while I waited and that was delicious too. This is gonna be a new regular spot for me and my family

Yelp
The way I inhaled my Yemeni shawarma plate y'all. Heard about Halal King Kitchen from all their great Yelp and Goog reviews, and since our gov is relentlessly bombing and targeting our Yemeni homies and sailors, the least I can do is support our Bay Area Yemeni peeps. Yes the rumors are true, they're a order-at-the-window more so takeout spot vs dine in. They have one small picnic table if you want to eat there. The sweet man at the cashier gave me complimentary sweet black tea. Yemen don't play with their tea and coffees, and although I prefer my teas less sweet. I sipped that honey-infused sucker like it was oxygen. The rice was so flavorful. And the chicken *Chefs kiss* The naan is on the thinner side but so soft and honestly I wish I bought an extra piece so I could scoop every bit of the deliciousness in my takeout box. Comes with a lil salad on the side too. Would HIGHLY recommend you stop by this spot and maybe fill up on some gas since they're on the same lot as the gas station. Super close off the freeway if you're coming up from Oaktown or Berkeley. Sweet guys and even more sweet tea. Thanks Halal King habibis.

Yelp
Im a bit picky with food so I rarely eat anywhere twice. This was my 2nd time here. Casual spot for take out. attached to a gas station. Order at a window outside. I don't remember the name of the dish but it was wonderful. Hummus was also delish. Will be back for sure. complimentary tea is a must try. I'm not a tea person but I loved it.

Yelp
Why does Richmond have the best gas station food?! I found this spot while scrolling on Yelp. The photos looked good, we were craving shawarma, so we called in an order. We were surprised when we arrived that it was at a gas station. We were excited though because we love Krispy Krunchy Chicken on 23rd St, which is also at a Richmond gas station. My boyfriend ordered the Chicken Shawarma Plate and I ordered the Beef Shawarma Plate. Both dishes really hit the spot for us. The Good: - Portions were great for the price. We both finished our plates but were very full after - Rice was so flavorful and tasty - Salad was refreshing - Some of the best hummus I've had - Both sauces are so good, although I have to get double garlic sauce next time. One is simply not enough! The Slightly Less Good: - We both agreed the meat was a little overcooked, but the flavor made up for it. And it wasn't dry, but could be a tiny bit more moist. The beef shawarma mix was so fragrant though, and you could taste all the flavor profiles it was trying to hit. Very great mix. The Bad: - Not that bad, but parking can be a little tough when it's busy. There's only so many parking spots at gas stations. All in all, we really loved it and we'll be back again! I'd be interested in trying some other menu items next time as well! And double garlic sauce!

Yelp
First of all, they are SO KIND here. Albeit the wait was a tad long, but they were very sweet and gave me a cup of their traditional sweet tea to drink while I waited. There also isn't a falafel plate, but they were nicely accommodated my request! The falafels were SO BIG?! I will admit my partner was a little disappointed in the little amount of meat he got. But but, we both freaking loved the rice. It was really well flavored and the two of us could've probably just ate a bowl of their rice on its own. I would love to come by and try their breakfast too!

Yelp
The mandi was awesome We ordered on the phone and the food was ready - we checked on nut allergy and everything though communication was a bit difficult the folks used an app to confirm that it did not have any nuts Awesome food, friendly folks and I will definitely stop by again

Ikerma A.

Yelp
Honestly, the folks working at the restaurant are super nice and respectful, you can tell they really put their heart into what they do. The food is seriously delicious and stands out from other places, especially the mandi - everyone at home loves it, from the kids to the adults. Even when we have guests over, they always ask where the food's from 'cause it leaves such a special taste Thank you

Yelp
Omg. Came here by accident Best gas station food in the world. Greeted with the best hot cup of tea. #1 Hail the king. Thank you

Yelp
This place was really amazing, I 100% recommend it most try. Very nice people and the food is amazing. I wish I could say more but there is not enough word to describe it.

Yelp
I found out about this hole in the wall restaurant on IG. They are located inside Kwik Serv, a gas station, in Richmond (right off the freeway). Apparently the owner and his uncle immigrated from Yemen to Oakland eight years ago to Oakland and they serve the best Yemeni food in the Bay. I decided to give it a try since I've never had Yemeni food and was in the area. We were the only ones there when we arrived around 12:30pm on a Saturday. The owner explained to us the different items on their menu, so we decided to get Chicken Mendi and a side of fries. The chicken was very juicy and tender. The rice and salad was packed with flavor. The fries reminded me of McDonald's fries and it could have been crispier. Indoor seating is not available, but they do have a bench and table in front of the establishment. The gas station is quite popular since it's right off the freeway.

Yelp
I love this place! I tried the lamb kebab and it was so good. I am not from Yemen and don't have the experience to know authentic Yemeni food, but the flavors and quality of the food were outstanding. Even more impressive was the kindness I experienced from the 2 guys running the place and preparing the food. We were given a type of black sweet tea that was so good and it was complimentary. The nice guy who served it to me even gave me more after I finished my first cup. Some hi-lights about this place: * food made fresh to order, that's why there is a wait, personally it's well worth it and no problem for the quality of the food. Order ahead and plan accordingly if time is an issue * their rice and hummus is so good! * the kindest and friendliest service makes this place a one of a kind * feels like I was being served a home cooked meal * this place is unique and special! Positive and friendly vibes, delicious and outstanding food! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I can't say enough about how delicious, fresh, perfectly seasoned and generously portioned the food is here. It's unique, but also familiar if you've had Middle Eastern food. Chicken Mendi: Whole on-bone chicken pieces with rice, I get 2 meals out of it easily. I saved one piece of chicken, took all the meat off at home and put it over some pasta. Boom. Chicken Shawerma: OMG this is so good. Either in a plate with rice or in a flatbread wrap. The garlic sauce is really garlicky and the green sauce is moderately spicy. Falafel: Best falafel around, really filling if you're veg or vegan. I can't wait to try more dishes here but it's hard not to order the chicken! And the rice is SO tasty you can just eat it by itself. It does take 15-20 minutes to prepare. I live nearby so I just call in my order and go pick it up. And they always answer the phone, unlike some places! The employees are so kind and give out free tea while you're waiting. I have seen a picnic table outside but you really don't want to sit there, it's in a busy gas station. Just get it to go and bring it to a local park.

Yelp
Authentic Yemeni food at a Kwik Serv gas station, who would've thought! The Chicken Zurbian was perfectly "medium" spicy and very generous with the portion. The Toum (garlic sauce) and Zhoug (spicy cilantro sauce) they gave on the side accented its flavors. The wait was easily worth it cause the dish was flaming hot and had fall-off-the-bone tender pieces of chicken. Appreciated the complimentary hot sweet tea. Highly recommend!

andrew k.

Yelp
Great food, large servings, the man taking my order was a kind gentleman, the salad and hummus on the side was superb with the pita bread provided. I'll be back for lunch for sure...

Mariah M.

Yelp
Great food, I always come here. I get a chicken wrap every time, the guys working in the back always do a great job. Friendly and very chill vibes when you come in.
google avatar

Stephen Y.

Yelp
Got the chicken akdah again and some falafel; the falafel were nice, without measurable room for improvement. The chicken akdah was solid as always, though the serving size was roughly halved. Still very much worth it.

Frank S.

Yelp
Flavors are good but the meats were unfortunately overcooked. Beef shawarma was dry. The flatbread and hummus were both mediocre (seemed store-bought), tasted storebought as well. 7/10

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this spot for a minute and it did not disappoint! I took my mom here today on this drizzly afternoon. We parked on the street nearby because there's not a ton of parking in the gas station, and we walked up to the counter to order. The folks working there were very friendly, kind, and surprisingly attentive. While we were waiting, they gave us free tea that was sweet and tasted like it was spiced with cardamom and maybe cinnamon and cloves. It was the perfect drink to sip on while waiting for our food. At first I was just sharing one cup with my mom but then they asked if I wanted my own and I could not resist because it was delicious. I'm vegetarian and it was totally clear what items had meat and what didn't, so at first we just ordered a falafel wrap with fries. This felt too basic because you can get decent falafel a lot of places, and I wanted to get something else that was more reflective of their yemenj cooking. We ended up asking if either of the bean options had meat and were told they did not, so we added an order of the foul beans. When asked for how spicy we wanted the falafel and the beans, we said spicy. The food: The falafel wrap was pretty tasty! I liked that it didn't fall apart too easily, and there was a good balance of falafel, tomato, etc. Even though we asked for spicy, it was not spicy at all, but luckily they gave us 3 containers of hot sauce that really added to the wrap. The fries were pretty basic, but the sauce that came with them was spicy and creamy and delicious. The foul was obviously the star, savory and spiced like a warm hug. It wasn't super spicy in terms of heat, but just enough to make your nose run a little. It also came with some good pita for dipping. I am so glad we decided to stop by and I'm so glad I live nearby and can come back again soon!

Yelp
Great place right off hwy 80 to grab some food to go (no indoor seating. ) I got the stir fry chicken akdah (similar to karahi chicken) with bell peppers and onions. Be sure to ask for the green chutney. I thought it was lacking in flavor. I added some Indian pickle to liven it up when i got home. It came with 3 large pitas. I'll be back to try the beef Sharma plate.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Looked promising. Chicken shawarma white meat over marinated dry etc Wrap very one note feeling way too heavy needed acidity and freshness to lift it. Good texture on the wrap , better than shawarmaji but same shit. Too heavy and dry meat. Making fake shawarma (seasoning only) from breast meat is the dumbest thing ever. NorCal shops need some work compared to glendale, n Hollywood. Toum was fine

Ek A.

Yelp
It's an amazing restaurant! My wife and I went there for breakfast, and we truly enjoyed the delicious and flavorful food. On top of that, the staff's service was outstanding. They genuinely wanted to ensure that every customer was happy and comfortable. The prices were also very reasonable--not overpriced at all.
google avatar

Angela A.

Yelp
Best chicken rice takeout. Fresh and flavorful. Excited to try the kebabs and breakfast.

Yelp
This is the craziest place for some bomb ass halal. It's in the corner of a busy gas station with all the characters you can imagine hanging out at a gas station. As someone said it's not a place to hang out but to get some of the best Yemeni food. There is limited parking and non stop people getting gas. But the food. I got the chicken shawarma and fantastic. Get a free cup of tea while waiting from a smiling server. Will be back for the chaos!
google avatar

Yelp
A hidden gem. The food is amazing and the people are hella cool. My family and I come here regularly. The Mart (different owner) is nice too, they have snacks and drinks that I have me t seen anywhere.

Yelp
Love the free tea they offer. I personally love their chicken Mandi. It is delicious and huge portions.

Yelp

Yelp
Halal King has truly outdone themselves with their shawarma sandwich! This masterpiece is a far out blend of spices and ingredients that do traditional flavor dances on your palate. The tender, perfectly seasoned meat, encased in warm, toasted bread, creates a symphony of taste that is nothing short of superb. It's moonlit Sinatra by Beethoven on a plate. Halal King is a must-visit for anyone seeking an unforgettable dining experience. Huge shout out and salutations to the fellas in that kitchen.

Yelp
I was looking for a place to grab a bite to eat while driving home from work. Saw this place on Google and decided to try it out due to their high reviews. When I say this chicken wrap was the tastiest chicken wrap I've ever had, I'm not lying. Located inside a gas station and ran by Yemenis gentlemen who were very friendly. Give this place a try

Leon F.

Yelp
Friendly service, really good food. I ordered the chicken mendi and lamb plates. They have a table outside if you want it sat there, but it's at a gas station so ambience is not the best.
google avatar

Suzie K.

Yelp
First time to try this place . Food and flavors are insane here. Extremely tasty and prompt service! We tried chicken Zurbian and chicken Shwarma- both are above 5 stars. Definitely we will come back again!

Yelp
Fantastic food in a very unassuming location. Everything on the menu is amazing, you can't go wrong. There's a small table out front, but we always get it to go. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Great food, loved the rice and the lamb kebab. Great service and the tea was absolutely yummy!

Aziz J.

Yelp
Food is absolutely delicious! Packed with flavor, can taste the heavy usage of the most delicious spices and the chicken just melts in your mouth. Also provided complimentary tea. The food is a 10/10 with very reasonable prices.

Salee A.

Yelp
Their food is so good. It tastes homemade which i really like. I've tried several dishes and they're all great. Highly recommend them.

Yelp
Lamb kabobs are amazing! Definitely worth the 17 minute wait. The rice is out of bounds , everything here is great.
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy food (the white garlic sauce is really tasty), friendly staff and quick delivery.
google avatar

Pema G.

Yelp
The food was great, prices are great, and the service is great. I got lamb and chicken kebab cuz they ran out of the beef kabob but all good. The kebabs came with rice and that rice was special. It tasted just like biryani and had so much flavor just by itself. It also came with some salad that was so good and refreshing. There's lots of parking and I don't think there's dining which is fine. Ima be back to try the rest of the menu forsure.

Yelp
AMAZING! TBH, I was skeptical about eating food prepared in a gas station. Just sayin'. But I forged on and thought to myself. "well it will either be absolutely delicious or horrible. Probably not in between". You can either order at a walk up takeout window or go inside the gas station to order. I am DELIGHTED to report that this food is fantastic. The guys who run it are super nice and very good at what they do. Loved, loved the chef. He jokingly refused to tell me what special spices were in the chicken dish. He said they were a secret! The chef and the food is from Yemen. But they also offer some American items as well. This place is really clean inside, and totally legit! I ordered the chicken mendi, (sometimes spelled MANDI) and was amazed that there was a huge amount of fluffy turmeric-stained basmati rice, fantastic cucumber salad, braised fresh vegetables, and a half chicken on top of the rice. (It was enough food for two days). Beautifully spiced, hot sauce on the side--this place is a home run. I can't wait to go back to try more food.

Al H.

Yelp
Very good and reasonable prices the food is fresh and tasty . Very surprised to find this inside a gas station
google avatar

Yelp
It's good but it took sooooooo long. Not sure I'd go back. The falafel is better than most as was the beef shawarma.

Yelp
This place has very flavorful takeout. The people are friendly. I'm glad I heard about this place in a KQED article.
