The Best Restaurants in Tampa | Eater Miami

"Blackbrick is a family-run restaurant that pays homage to traditional Chinese regional cuisines with a touch of Florida flair. Hales, a Tampa native, made a name for himself in Miami before returning to Tampa to open Blackbrick. The chef traveled extensively throughout China to learn techniques before bringing them back to Florida. At Blackbrick, Hales offers traditional dishes such as whole Beijing duck, along with some new interpretations like his General Tso’s Florida gator. Blackbrick has a second location at 1809 W. Platt Street in the Hyde Park neighborhood." - Laine Doss

Tried this place out with friends. The services was very efficient and the food was great. Serving sizes are shareable for two but it’s probably 3 realistically. Try the lamb chops and dumpling, they were great and tasty. The waiter was very nice and friendly and super attentive. Only downside was that they accepted reservations until 8:30pm with a 9pm closing time. It’s a tight turnaround but otherwise a great experience.

The food was decent but lacked the extra something I would expect at this price point. Pork belly was good as expected. The fried squid was cooked really well and had a great batter. Asparagus was tasty and cooked well to maintain the fresh crispiness. The Xi'an Cumin Lamb was ground lamb meat with wide noodles. Add the the extra spicy chilly oil for added flavor to this dish. The crab and pork soup dumplings had good sweet and savory flavors. Skip the eggroll and the wonton soup. Glad to have tried this place but there are others that provide similar food without the cost of the excellent but superfluous service and namesake. (3/23/2025)

We had another phenomenal dinner at Black Brick. Our waiter/ bartender Justin was suggestive and informative. We had many small plates and the Peking duck. All were fantastic! The drinks were great, the service was exceptional, and the food (as always) was of the highest quality.

We absolutely loved it here! The service and the atmosphere were out of this world. The food was phenomenal. They had creative cocktails, delicious appetizers, and some of the best duck I've ever had. The duck was definitely the star of the show, but we enjoyed everything. The pork belly was cooked perfectly and we highly recommended. We enjoyed it so much we ordered a second helping. I thought the egg roll was a little too shrimpy for me, but others at my table liked it. We were also really impressed by all the desserts

My wife and I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while. We went to dinner this past weekend with friends and the experience far seated my expectations. It is definitely established itself as one of my top five favorite restaurants in Tampa. Chef Hale Came out and introduced himself, which is always a classy thing to do. The ambience was great, The music was perfect great songs to set the vibe played at the volume that you could hear and enjoy but not overpowering conversation. Every single dish we ordered was delicious and as a non-drinker there was a mocktail called the violet Temple that was probably one of my favorite mocktails. I’ve ever had anywhere in the world and I’ve had mocktails all over the planet lol I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough my wife and I will make it a regular spot in our dinner, date rotation!

First time. Nice quiet vibe, great decor. The Florida gator was our favorite. We also ordered spicy margaritas, expresso martini, salt and pepper squid, and the black brick tower dumplings. The chicken dumplings were the best of the 3 options, and the squid went very well with the sauce that’s the gator came with. Jeremy and Justin were awesome. Thank you for the experience.

I first heard about Black Brick from a friend who recommended visiting the Platt Street location over the one on Dale Mabry, saying the experience was much better. I’m so glad I took her advice! The food was absolutely incredible, but what truly made the night special was the outstanding service. Bailey, the Assistant GM, went above and beyond to ensure we felt welcomed and had a fantastic experience. Her attention to detail and genuine hospitality made all the difference. I’ll definitely be coming back in the near future!

Like most places in Hyde Park, this restaurant is very busy on the weekend; it was even difficult to get a seat at the bar, so I would definitely recommend a reservation. Even with one, we waited 20 minutes past the reservation time for a table, which was annoying. However, after that the service was friendly and prompt and overall excellent. The food was fantastic and worth the wait. Even the egg fried rice from the kids’ menu that we got for my daughter was so tasty. The salt and pepper squid was surprisingly good as well, and of course the dumplings were delicious. Everything that we got was great.

Yelp
Great food and our service was even better. Our waitress was attentive and kind. In addition to this, she was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and places to go around Tampa. Also, my husband and I had the awesome opportunity to meet one of the owners of the restaurant, Wife Hales. It was a pleasure and good luck with the new location!

Yelp
I just want to start out by saying I am not trying to sway anyone away from coming here but it is in my opinion that this isn't the best Chinese restaurant in Tampa. While there was nothing wrong with the dishes we were served and the staff were friendly and attentive, nothing here blew me away or seemed like a unique take on classic Szechuan cooking. Also they preface at the beginning of the meal that their dishes are to be shared "family style" and they are large portions but in reality everything we ordered, with the exception of the fried rice, was moderately sized at best. My favourite dish of the night was the Duck Breast. It had an orange sauce that was sweet and punchy. Duck was cooked well but odd it is a $31 dish that does not come with any rice. I won't go into detail of every dish we had because they all were fine and we didn't have any complaints. My issue is they present themselves as elevated Chinese but it really is just comparable to PF Chang's. I think if that's the kind of Chinese food you like you'll love this place. Lastly the decor is very kitschy. It really throws you off upon entering. It does not match the food or the price tag.

Yelp
This is the second and newest location for Hales Blackbrick. The restaurant is located in the space formerly occupied by Thee Tree House. They completed revamped the space and spared no expense. The space is artistic, funky, modern, and elegant. In terms of design, it seems like a space you are more likely to find in Wynwood than Tampa...and thats a great thing because there is no other restaurant like it in town. In terms of the food, it has the same menu as the other location. I visited the restaurant during the grand soft opening. The service and food were both excellent. I highly recommend Hales Blackbrick in Hyde Park. Definitely check it out!

Yelp
Had high expectations but it fell short. It's not that the food doesn't taste good, it's that it doesn't taste as excellent as the price tag says. The value isn't there. Also as Chinese, just because there's ginger or dry chilli pepper, or garlic used doesn't make a dish Chinese. It's fushion at best, almost everything (except dim sum) that we inquired is at least lightly fried if not deep fried, which makes it not healthy or the way to prep fresh ingredients in Chinese mind set. The value is low, kind of like Ro in Hyde Park. It's good, just not good enough for the price. Service is good if not TOO attentive on a Monday night. Me and my friend were trying to talk the duration of the night but our conversation was interrupted probably 20 times, dishes were taken away almost too quickly, as they were "hurrying" us when there are other tables open. Drinks are good also not $18/19 good.

Yelp
We enjoyed our large group dinner! The back room had two large circular tables with marble lazy Susans, perfect for sharing- and also a bit quieter than the rest of the restaurant. However, the rest of the restaurant was extremely loud! We ordered a little bit of everything with the highlights being the dumplings, rabbit, bison, and Brussels. Everything had quite a kick, so be prepared for the spice! The low light was the truffle fried rice- not a distinct truffle flavor. Overall, the prices were STEEP for the atmosphere which was club-like. Our waiter was prompt and friendly. We even got to meet Chef Hale which was super cool! I have a lot of respect for him coming to each table. Overall, it was a great evening and definitely a restaurant where you should go with a large group to share items, so that you can try as much as possible. Just be prepared to spend a pretty penny!

Yelp
They've done a nice job renovating the space and it's very nice inside. The service, like their other location on N Dale Mabry, is excellent with servers having a good understanding of the menu and steering you to foods you'll like and appropriate quantities. The food was very good: we were two dining and had the potstickers (4 small), the Kung Pao Asparagus and the Chicken and Chive noodles. Everything was delicious and we ate every bite - portions are fine but not generous - food is excellent quality. My only pet peeve and why I rated a 4 was that there was only Valet Parking and there was a $6 fee for this - it wasn't tip only, but $6 plus tip; just a bit unexpected. Otherwise a very good experience.

Yelp
This place is incredible. The food, the service - everything was incredible. My friend and I had a few dishes, and they were all so good. The drinks were great, and the wine selection is killer. I will be back, and I have already recommended this to a ton of people!

Yelp
I'm not going to leave a bad review. I'm giving 4 stars for the food. Sat at bar on a Wednesday and the bartender said she would make us a drink before sitting at our table. My husband said we didn't want waters but that's all we got because our drinks weren't ready he didn't even get his beer. Bartender said drink is on her (my drink I ordered never came) because they were out of ingredients. Either way this was a very special occasion and it was very underwhelming. The food was good was just hoping for more "sizzle" for cost. I did get a call after we left as an apology to make things right. I'm going to try this place again. I was going to for birthday party at end of month but I think I'll try again before spending that kind of $ especially on a big group

Yelp
We had the chicken and chive noodles and the pork ribs with the tower of shui Mai. All delicious! The restaurant is tastefully decorated with an upscale vibe. Valet parking was a nice addition. This location is close to our home so we'll be back again.

Yelp
Amazing experience with a great atmosphere and outstanding service. The food was absolutely delicious--be sure to try the pork belly! The egg rolls are also a must.

Yelp
Excellent as always. At first I was skeptical this wouldn't live up to the hype of the original location. Highly recommend the tomahawk steak along with the cauliflower. You can't go wrong with anything here, but those stole the show. Service was great and so were the cocktails. A fun spot for Asian fusion with a lively ambiance. Chef Hales always knocks it out the park.

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Highly recommend both locations but the new location came out fantastic and looks amazing! My husband and I went there for his birthday and the service was incredible. Every single person who came by the table made sure to say happy birthday and they gave ice cream at the end! The food is ALWAYS incredible every time we have eaten at hales. Don't hesitate and make a reservation, you won't regret it!

Yelp
One of the coolest restaurant atmospheres in all of TB that will transport you. The hip vibe is accentuated by a tasty and creative signature cocktail list - the Sichuan mezcal is a must. The experience is elevated further by a menu that is specially curated by the talented Chef Hales with dishes like the whole (Peking) duck, glazed pork belly, and assorted dumpling stack. Chef Hales and the staff were very involved with every aspect of our visit and genuinely attentive. An important part of our dining experience was the wine list which is quite possibly one of the finest in TB and only matched by a couple of local fine steak houses. Go here and you WILL have a great time!

Yelp
Hales Blackbrick in Hyde Park has an amazing upscale and modern vibe. The decor is beautiful, service was impeccable, the food was delicious, and the drinks were on point! The entire experience was perfection!

Yelp
Absolutely love new Blackbrick!!! It's just as amazing as the Drew Park location - same great food, service, and its signature style - just with more space and a convenient South Tampa location. Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
We have loved Hales on North Dale Mabry since it opened a few years ago. We go every month or two and always bring friends that haven't experienced the place yet and they all love it. The device is always impeccable. The food is amazing every time. So many flavors. So tasty. So different from any other restaurant. And we love how involved Chef Hale and his wife are. They are always there greeting everyone and making an effort to talk to everyone during their meal. We are so excited that they opened a place in south Tampa- so close to our house. And they couldn't have done a better job with the decor. All Chef Hale's creation which is so impressive. The place is beautiful, so eclectic, vibrant and colorful. The service could not be any better. And the vibe is so great. And just as we had expected the food is amazing. And for only being opened for less than 2 weeks the experience was flawless. You would never have know that they were open for that short period of time. And we love that Chef Hale had promoted our favorite employee Taylor to manager. Well deserved and she is killing it!
