15 Essential Sandwiches Around Boston

"Downtown food hall High Street Place certainly has no dearth of delicious sandwiches, just take peek at the outstanding breakfast offerings at the Mike and Patty’s outpost and the whitefish salad on a bagel at Mamaleh’s Delicatessen. Any visit to the hopping spot must include a stop at Haley Jane’s, a purveyor of perfect fried chicken sandwiches, which started as a special at sibling spot, Wheelhouse. While all the bites are things of beauty — especially tender since thigh meat is the cut of choice — the CBR with bacon jam and jalapeno ranch slakes those spicy-sweet-salty cravings." - Terrence Doyle, Rachel Leah Blumenthal, Nathan Tavares

There are plenty of other options in High Street Food Hall, but don't go here. They're suppose to specialize in ONE type of food: Fried Chicken. But just about every aspect of fried chicken absolutely failed. First bite is okay with the crisp, but it ends there. As soon as the breading hits your palettes, it has absolutely no seasoning and flavor. So saltiness, no spices, nothing. The buns are absolutely flat. And the main ingredient, the chicken itself wasn't even cooked all the way and I had to pull apart the ligaments. When fried chicken is becoming the latest trend, they are thousand percent abysmal..

I had the ricky bobby. The sauce and the combine with other ingredients were tasty. Fillet had thick crust, some parts of the chicken looked kinda raw. As a chef me self I know this level raw looking is “eatable safe” (I also checked the heat level of that part ofc.) but it shows that you have some frying issues. Need more time to full cook. Chicken products are one of the most risky protein in kitchen, you must take care of this situation.

Was so excited to try because it sounds like the recipes are tasty but just like the other comments I am worried about food safety. Biting into the sandwich, the meat was very rare. When I asked about it, the chef said that he had “tested it with the meat thermometer but it’s thigh meat so it’s more tender.” I ate more before throwing out the rest and getting really sick that evening. Sauces were tasty & adult caprisun was cool though.

Chicken sandwich was good, not great. The service was fairly fast but the flavor was nothing special - which made me a little sad.

I love fried chicken sandwiches, and I was eager to try Haley Jane's. But the flavor and texture of the fried filet and the food safety problems I observed make it unlikely that I will return. Haley Jane's serves fried chicken sandwiches for $12. Several variations are available, differing primarily in choice of sauce. I had a "smashville", which adds a mildly spicy seasoning and a sandwich sauce. The filet itself is pounded thin and surrounded by a very thick breading. The meat is not as juicy or flavorful as what you might have at Chick-fil-a, and the breading, while thick, is not a crunchy as you might expect from a fried chicken joint. Instead, the breading is a bit too thick and chewy, the chicken itself is too thin and plain, and the toppings end up providing most of the flavor. The sauce, seasoning, bun, and pickles were all tasty and did their job well, but it wasn't enough to save the sandwich. The reason for these weaknesses in the filet is surely due to the rather convoluted process the restaurant employs to prepare them. In the 45 minutes I spent in line, ordering, waiting, and eating I observed the process several times. The cook starts with a pre-breaded filet from a large tray of pre-breaded filets. (This large tray of raw chicken remained on the counter, partially covered, at room temperature, for the entire time I was there - concerning!) The raw filets are fried in a deep fryer and then held in a heat drawer. As needed, the cook would take filets from the heat drawer and refresh them by returning them to the fryer for around 60 seconds. They would then be used in sandwiches, served very hot. The process of pre-breading, frying, resting, and frying again results in chewier breading with less crunch. What you want, and what you get elsewhere, is a freshly-breaded filet, fried once, and served shortly after. For $12 I expected a very fresh fried chicken filet, not the imitation of freshness in a filet breaded hours (days?) earlier and fried thirty minutes prior. Finally, the food safety concerns are a problem. It should be unacceptable to any restaurant to store raw chicken on the counter for the 45 minutes I observed. In addition, the cook used the same gloves when transferring raw chicken as when handling buns, cooked filets, and fries. I also noted that he used his finger to taste some seasoning at one point and continued to use the same gloves. I am sorry that this is the first review. I have no grudge against Haley Jane's. I hope they can improve both their process and food safety practices and continue serving me fried chicken sandwiches for years to come.

Purchased a Plain Jane. It was overcooked, the chicken was dry and the crust uneatable. lettuce was border line rancid. First and last time I’ll grab lunch $15 out the window!

I ordered a classic fried chicken sandwich during a busy weekday lunch rush. The service and speed was good, not stellar, not inadequate. Not much to go wrong there. Their stand was presentable and clean as well. However, their product, the chicken sandwich in question. HORRIBLE. The seasoning used gives the chicken a bitter, nasty flavor and my fried chicken piece was still raw in the middle. I took one edge bite, and that was the end of my patronage to this place. Terrible sandwiches, and they also have a bad habit of keeping chicken out at room temp in cross contaminated spaces. They also serially undercook their chicken, it's in many other reviews. Fine business model with a disgusting product.

I had the shake it nuggz twice. Both times it taste so good. The sauce has a nice little spice to it. Also, the sauce that comes on the side is so good. The French fries were nice and thin. Overall I loved the food. The women taking orders could be more pleasant maybe even learn how to greet people. The location is great in the heart of downtown busy work area. You could also walk from South Station. Some days are busier than others. I’ve gone in two different days. You can also order in advance.

Yelp
Of all the High Street Place options, Haley Jane's looked the most promising. The Rickey Bobby sandwich was full of flavor and the chicken thigh was nicely crisped. While I wouldn't go out of my way for this meal, if you happen to be looking for a bite to eat in this food hall, this spot seems like a solid option. Service was super fast! My food was ready in under 5 minutes.

Yelp
A co-worker suggested i check out Haley Jane's since I love anything fried chicken. So glad I did. Haley Jane's is located in the High Street food hall. The line looked long, but moved quickly. I only had 15 minutes and made it back to the office in time for my meeting. My buffalo chicken sandwich was perfectly cooked. Great flavor - just enough kick. Loved the seasoned fries. Great value at price point.

Yelp
My coworkers recommended it and it did not disappoint. The Ricky Bobby - the fried chicken was flavorful and juicy. I'm not a huge pickle person but the thick cut pickles worked so well with the pimento cheese and the fried chicken. The bun was soft and fluffy but I wish it was toasted. The bottom bun was mushy from the sauce. Overall, it was still a good fried chicken sandwich. Sweet potato fries - some of the fries were on the soggy side sadly.

Yelp
Located inside High Street Place with many other dining options is Haley Jane's known for their fried chicken. I came here on a weekend for lunch and decided to get the Rickey Bobby which states that their awesome sauce is better than Chick Fil A. This fried chicken sandwich is pretty good in terms of its crispiness and moistness as it is made with dark meat. The sauce with pickles and lettuce adds a different texture to the sandwich when you go in for a bite. It's a good portion of chicken for a sandwich, but they also offer chicken tenders (white meat) and various sides including fries. The service was pretty quick, so definitely a good place to grab lunch.

Yelp
Lunchtime perfection! Hit all the right notes and left nothing to be desired except another sandwich (if only these weren't so unhealthy!) I ordered a Smashville. The chicken was hot, fresh, tender, and very flavorful. The spice blend is legit! I could smell this deliciousness from a foot away as I prepared to devour this thing. Speaking of: the heat level is on point! As someone for whom Tobasco tastes like salty vinegar, it was enough to warm the mouth but not enough to have me chugging or even reaching for the water. (Be advised: your mileage may vary). The shredded lettuce ("Shrettuce"), sauce, and pickles were solid. They added a balance of freshness and additional moisture, so it wasn't all bread and meat. As a pickle lover, next time, I will order extra! I also award them points for execution! For a lunchtime grab that is eaten on the go, the sando was very well assembled. The ingredients were not doing their darndest to escape, and neither were the juices. Believe it or not, even as someone who goes through napkins like a ShopVac, this was neat enough that I could dispense with them. The precision assembly is even more impressive, considering this was amid a lunchtime rush. Speaking of: Despite a large lunchtime crowd at HSP, these folks kept the line moving and the sandwiches cranking out. Especially impressive considering how fresh everything was. The wait was much less than I expected! Finally, there is the question of value. $12 for a sandwich of this quality is terrific. The location cannot be understated either since this is downtown Boston. Haley Jane's is sure to become a quick favorite when I'm craving a hot chicken sandwich, especially since I work (almost) next door. When quality, value, and execution all hit the nail on the head, what more can you ask for.

Yelp
Yup. I was sold after the first bite! My husband and I split a smashville chicken sandwich with cornbread while sitting at the brewery next door. The chicken was a reasonable portion size (not huge/overwhelming) and had a great amount of spice - you could definitely taste it and it was delicious! It was nicely fried and I also loved the sauce that was on it. The cornbread complimented the meal perfectly. I will definitely be back to get this again!

Yelp
The Ricky Bobby is my favorite sandwich! Great fried chicken, hard to believe it's gluten free!

Yelp
The Nashville fried chicken was tasty and a good amount of spice but I also "spun the wheel" to try another nugget and DAMN the scorpion fire nugget basically killed me. It was spicy without being particularly flavorful. I was also disappointed to spin the wheel cost $2.75 for an extra nugget that took a year off my life. Would recommend their Nashville chicken sandwich but avoid the scorpion unless you're serious about spice.

Yelp
these nuggets were ok, and they had an garlic aioli dipping sauce. I also had a side of sweet potato fries in the meal which were good. my one complaint is that it was $13 total for 5 nuggets & a side of fries. a little overpriced for 5 nuggets... heard the sandwich was good so i'll try it next time.

Yelp
Excellent find in the High Street Food Hall. Just came back from a trip down to the Deep South where I was spoiled with excellent fried chicken so expectations and standards are quite high. Pleased to say that Haley James did not disappoint. I was torn between giving four and five stars (would have put it close to 4.25, hence rounding down - no grade inflation, here!). Definitely a solid pic and would recommend if you are in the mood for a fried chicken sandwich. And even if fried chicken is not your thing or you change your mind, plenty of other options in the food hall (one of the better ones in Boston IMHO)

Rani D.

Yelp
Good -but wish there were some healthier options too. The food tasted fresh and yummy.
