Hall Pass definitely nails the aesthetics the shop has a charming, nostalgic vibe with cheerful decor that's instantly Instagrammable. The staff was upbeat and friendly, and I appreciated the welcoming energy on opening day.
Unfortunately, the ice cream itself didn't quite live up to the excitement. We tried 2 flavors: Chocolate Chip Cookie Brown Butter and Brownie Batter. Both sounded promising and indulgent, but the reality was pretty underwhelming I'd rate them around a 5 out of 10. Edible, but forgettable. Not something I would seek out.
The Chocolate Chip Cookie Brown Butter, in particular, had so much potential! A flavor like that should be bold and buttery, but instead, it tasted more like vanilla with some chocolate chips mixed in. Similarly, the Brownie Batter was reminiscent of a basic chocolate, again with mini chocolate chips thrown in. Neither flavor delivered on its name. Even the texture was underwhelming. Certainly lacking in butter fat percentage. It just didn't have that creamy craveable oomph.
Speaking of the chocolate chips they were the tiny, hard kind you might find in cheap store-bought cookies like Famous Amos and unfortunately, they didn't do the ice cream any favors. The texture was distracting (crunchy and waxy), and they didn't contribute much in terms of flavor. In a high-quality scoop, you'd expect elements like this to elevate the experience here, they were a detractor.
If you're used to gourmet or artisanal ice cream, this probably won't hit the mark for you. But for those looking for a fun outing with kids for a quick sweet treat without a focus on a culinary experience, it might still be an enjoyable stop.
All in all, I love seeing new local businesses pop up, and I hope Hall Pass continues to grow and refine their offerings, the foundation is there, but the ice cream needs more depth and character to stand out in a crowded artisanal market.
