For Immigrant-Owned Restaurants, Surviving Coronavirus Is More Complicated - Eater

"Ham Hung, a 35-year-old restaurant in Los Angeles’s Koreatown, has seen a similar percentage decrease. 'Takeout and delivery is only like 30 percent of your income,' explains owner Sam Oh, who took over the restaurant after his father retired in 1998." - Jenny G. Zhang

LA’s North Korean Noodle Restaurant Ham Hung, 34 Years Later - Eater LA

"“I remember when we used to do 1,000 noodles a day,” Samuel Oh says in longing disbelief. Ham Hung is slow, and it’s about 6:30 on a Wednesday night. Earlier, he was up on the roof trying to repair the vent hoods (Sam is the owner and handyman of the restaurant), but it started raining so the fix will have to wait. Los Angeles is cold and murky just days before Memorial Day weekend, and that’s not great news. Sam has a scorned looked on his face as he glances out the window. His seasonal depression seems to be a little more acute because Ham Hung specializes in naengmyeon, the refreshing North Korean cold noodle that made a stir at last year’s Korean Summit in Seoul, when North Korean president Kim Jong Un said he had brought some of the dish to share with South Korean president Moon Jae-In. Naengmyeon is a seasonal dish for the older generation, best when eaten in the thick of summer heat. Served with a cup of piping hot soup broth, there’s a constant warming and cooling of the body between the ice cold and steaming hot broths. Back home in Hamhung, North Korea (where the restaurant gets its namesake), a lot of cold noodle restaurants close in the winter. Not here in Los Angeles, where Oh serves both Hamhung-style naengmyeon (bibim-naengmyeon) and Pyongyang-style (mul-naengmyeon) year-round. For better or worse, it’s the dish on which he proudly hangs his hat. Everything about Ham Hung is a throwback. Even the extruder Sam uses to make his noodles was built in 1985 (the same year Ham Hung opened). The machine is American-made, a rarity because it’s almost easier and cheaper to get them shipped in from Korea. The one at Ham Hung, however, includes a vat that holds 50 gallons of water, which Sam tells me is about double the size of any other extruder reservoir in the city. That means the restaurant has the capacity to handle a tremendous number of orders, although those days have passed. The extruder, now over 30 years old, is elegant yet massive, operating on hydraulic oil like a meat grinder in a butcher shop. The stainless-steel shines bright because it has been cared for, kept in pristine condition like a relic in a church. There’s something beautiful about its impracticality. It takes up one entire corner of an already cramped kitchen space. As Sam feeds the potato starch dough through the machine, the noodles spill directly into near-boiling water. Most days, the massive vat only has to boil single orders of naengmyeon at a time. After about 10 seconds of whisking around the noodles with a fine mesh sieve, Oh immediately pulls them out and shocks them in an ice bath before placing into a stainless steel bowl. The entire process, from extruder to water to bowl, takes just under 2 minutes. It’s difficult to find noodles as fresh as this anywhere. Chilly beef broths and cold noodles haven’t really made much headway in the American culinary lexicon. Looking around the restaurant, naengmyeon seems to be a hard sell to the traditional American palate. The Pyongyang style consists of buckwheat noodles served in an icy broth made of brisket and dongchimi, a thin pickling liquid. However, there’s a lot of familiarity in the bibim-naengmyeon. For starters, it’s dressed in dadaeki (red chili paste), a touchstone for people with a base level knowledge of Korean food. Sam uses a secret recipe for his own dadaeki, and it tastes unctuous and tangy. Ham Hung style noodles aren’t weighed down by too much gluten. They’re easy to digest, keeping you moving even on the hottest of days. Bibim-naengmyeon is typically made with potato starch, and it’s difficult to beat the freshness and quality of the ones at Ham Hung. Oh’s recipe, something he has tweaked over decades, calls for the addition of sweet potato starch and roughly 5% wheat flour. This combination creates maximum elasticity, making the noodles undeniably resilient and delightfully chewy. There aren’t many restaurants in America focusing on naengmyeon because it’s not a profitable model. Sam says the dish is often an accessory to Korean menus in Los Angeles, not a specific focus. Plenty of restaurants are content with using frozen noodles instead of going through some arduous process of making the dough process and purchasing expensive, bulky machinery. That’s the great thing about Ham Hung. The restaurant bends over backwards to serve a brilliant, yet underappreciated dish. When Sam took over the restaurant from his parents in 1998, they beat it into his brain to stay traditional. He now seems equal parts regretful and proud, “I don’t make that much money. Why do I go through this? It’s just stubbornness,” he says. Sam relies on the older Korean generations, a generation that has a specific craving for cold noodles, and a generation that Sam says is dying off. He points to another gentleman across the restaurant, who looks to be a bit younger than Sam, “He had no clue what it was. His parents never showed him,” Oh says. Unlike restaurants in North Korea, Ham Hung won’t close in the winter. Sam serves galbitang (beef short rip soup) and kimchi stew with pork belly to cater to the winter crowds. Currently, he supplies the Netflix offices with chicken and pork bulgogi a few times a week through a new catering service called Eat Club. He finds ways to make money when the sun doesn’t shine. Still, he’s got a 50-gallon vat of boiling water ready to go at a moment’s notice should there be a surge in cold noodle interest. It might not ever happen, but the flavors and practices of naengmyeon demand acknowledgement. In the meantime, like a lot of people in Los Angeles, Sam stares out the window, waiting for people to notice his hard work." - Danny Palumbo

I never write reviews but this place is genuinely so good and deserving of business. I've never seen dumplings this big, and the mixed noodles have amazing texture compared to the other ones I've tried and came with pork belly! 100% recommend - I wish this got the same hype as the others.

Very authentic Korean dishes. The host is very welcoming and warm-hearted. The pork spare ribs is sooo delicious. The best 돼지갈비찜 I have ever had. The dumpling is huge. Highly recommend this place.

#3 - Nang Myun. $15 for a nang myun and it was excellent. The serving was super generous and tasted so good! It was not super spicy at all. #10 Beef dumplings with rice cake soup - I also had the dumpling with rice cake. The rice cakes were so satisfyingly chewy! The dumplings were a bit bland. I really like restaurants with photo of food and price posted on the wall rather than a menu with some oddly named food. They had them big and yellow lol. The best part is the free parking. I drove around a few times around the block only to realize they had free parking!

We read a great article on Eater LA about how the owner Sam makes his own noodles from scratch in a vintage noodle machine and had to check it out. It is one of very few (the only?) place to try authentic North Korean style cold noodles in all of LA! The restaurant isn’t fancy inside, but service was wonderful and it is very clean. The noodles were delicious and unlike any other noodles I have ever had — uniquely chewy yet light and delicate. We liked the spicy cold noodles best. I think with some good marketing you could do an awesome cold noodle pop-up restaurant in a busier place like Sawtelle… not sure how you’d get the noodle machine there though!

We loved our experience here! The cold noodles were very authentic, although the beef was a bit chewy for my taste. The rib soup was incredibly tender. Our potato pancake was slightly greasy, but everything else was excellent, complemented by an amazing sauce. We will definitely come back!

Visited twice on weekends in January and February 2025. Food was very good. Establishment could use a renovation. Wasn't busy both times so we were seated right away. Service was good. Parking lot gets packed on weekends!

Korean cold noodle is their specialty. Overall average quality. Fast service. Free parking. Reasonable price.

Google
Horrible restaurant. Worst customer service and absolutely is an absolute disgrace to Korean food and culture. I recommend sun nong Dan or any other place as a matter of fact.

Yelp
Reallly good food, kind & efficient service, endearing/peaceful/respectful atmosphere; saw many elders and solo diners here enjoying, which felt like a testament to authenticity and quality. Will be back. Great prices too Got the gogi naengmyeon, donkatsu, and pan fry dumplings. All great; especiallyyy loved the naengmyeon and pan fried dumplings

Yelp
Excellent establishment located in a plaza south of koreatown. The staff we spoke with spoke little english, but we were able to get my orders in and we got the food quickly. The restaurant itself feels very homely. My favorite is the potato pancake!!

Delicious food with such great customer service. I'm coming back again. Super clean environment, such kindness and attentiveness! Love it here!

Yelp
Hm. I don't know what I just ate/got full off of. This was the worst $53 I've spent in Ktown/in LA in general. The cold noodles tasted like nothing. There is only noodles, pickles, and meat. Oh yea, half an over boiled egg. But the cold noodles didn't even come with crushed ice. It came with slightly cold broth. Kind of like if you were to ask for VERY LESS ICE in a boba order. And I just saw the combo on the wall advertising cold noodles and four piece dumpling and was expecting the price to be a little more but turns out it's an extra $12..? Idk if it's just me, or that doesn't seem right. At that price, I would've ordered another dish. If you think about it, that's a whole chipotle bowl of its own. And the dumplings didn't even come steaming hot...it felt like they just microwaved it Oh, and when we ordered two cold noodles (one of them being a combo), they didn't even give us side dishes? But all the other customers had it??? It was all grandmas and grandpas there...but like why did I have to ask mid meal for my side dishes..?? And then, I ate the side dishes and realized the best thing on the table was the broccoli with spicy sauce. #Neveragain

Yelp
Dined in and got food delivered from here many times since it's close to my place. Every time my husband and I dined here it was always the same server who is super nice. Their spicy pork ribs, dak dori tang, galbi tang, seafood soft tofu, and pork and kimchi kong biji is my top picks. The beef mu kuk is cheap and delicious. The ojingeo bulgogi, ugeoji galbi tang, and dong tae jjigae were pretty good too. I've also tried their nengmyun which was okay and think it could be better since this is a nengmyun place. The ttuk bokki was mediocre. This Korean restaurant is cheaper than other places and the dishes are either a hit or miss that's why we keep coming back to have the ones we like or try something new.

Yelp
The place isn't fancy looking and the Korean auntie working there doesn't speak much English, but that's when you know the food is top-tier. Got the Geobchang Jeongol (spicy veal small intestine), it was massive and delicious. As someone who has a low tolerance for spicy, it was manageable. Comes with two rice and definitely more for family style. Also got the mul naengmyeon to balance out the heat, very refreshing, good flavor, not a whole lot of meat. The server was very accommodating and attentive, bringing many many plates and bowls for us to share as she saw us needing them without even having to ask. Super patient with our lack of Korean knowledge and even went out of her way to help us pack/split leftovers. Would love to come eat here again.

Yelp
2 stars I really wanted to like this place, but the cold noodles fell short of satisfying. I ordered the Mul Naengmyun and asked for spicy chili paste on the side. While the server was decent, the spicy paste contained a fly...which was alive and kicking in the sauce. I told her about it and she gave me fresh sauce, but it made me wonder about the restaurant. Taste-wise, the broth was light with a touch of acidity. The pickled vegetables were just ok...I think there are restaurants that serve a better cold noodle. Unfortunately, I will not be back.

Yelp
Thank you Ham Hung Restaurant for one of the best meals I've had in my life. I'm sure many people have stepped into your doors not being able to appreciate what you offer simply because they have never had the privilege of experiencing authentic Korean cuisine. This is as close as it gets to what it genuinely feels like to enjoy a summertime "cold refreshing cold noodle" in Korea, and when I say Korea, I'm talking about the experience of native Koreans who understand the taste that comes from growing up in the motherland, in a native Korean household, experiencing home-made food from their grandparents, uncles, and aunties. These are the people who understand the excellence of food from Jeolla-do and the unique flavors and textures of the countryside compared to modern-day Seoul. This is why so many of your diners are Korean elders; these are the people who have spent a lifetime (in the motherland) appreciating this kind of culinary experience. Ham Hung Restaurant is like the hidden door in Korea Town Los Angeles that takes you in one step, across the world straight to Korea. It takes you to a time, place, an experience that money shouldn't be able to buy. Because of this, Ham Hung Restaurant deserves a Michelin star and I hope this door never closes. mul naengmyeon 물냉면 gogi naengmyeon 고기 냉면 (비빔) jjin-mandu (steamed dumplings) 찐 만두 yukgaejang 육개장

Yelp
After a long, exhausting day of walking around in the scorching heat, a bowl of Korean cold noodles was the move to make. My family and I decided to swing by Ham Hung Restaurant for just that. I know it sounds silly, but I cherish that feeling of being instantly whisked away to another world when I walk into some restaurants. From the television screens playing Korean shows or sports in the background, to the menu items taped up to the walls, to the low humming of the air conditioning unit in the corner, to the restaurant supplies stacked in the halls and corners, there's something just soothing and familiar about all of it. I also appreciated how helpful and caring our waitress was (she reminded me of an aunt by giving us all sorts of recommendations on what's good and fresh currently in the kitchen). You know it's legit when they serve you yooksoo, , in a thermos type bottle. This is basically a light beef broth that is meant to accompany your bowl of cold noodles. Even without the noodles, it's still a great warm and comforting drink to sip on while you wait. Being new to this spot, I went with the waitress's recommendation of their Gogi Naengmyeon (Spicy beef mixed noodles) - ($14.99). This dish is composed of a chewy buckwheat and potato starch noodles with a spicy and slightly sweet pepper paste sauce, cucumbers, boiled egg, and beef slices. Spicy yet refreshing. The meal also comes with a humble spread of side dishes (such as pickled radish, kimchi, etc.). The side dishes were really yum and pair well with the entrees. By the waitress's suggestion, we also got their Potato Pancake, Gamjajeon (about $13.99). It's such a simple thing, but it is incredibly delicious and satisfying. The dip of soy sauce really brings out that starchy sweet, fried flavor of the potato pancake. By the way, let me know if you have any other recommendations for Korean noodle places I should also check out. I would love to explore more spots for that.

Yelp
If you want to try an overpriced and the world's worst naenmyung, then come here!! Don't waste your money, go some place else!! Originally we went to Yuchun but we forgot they closed on Sundays and decided to try Ham Hung, that decision will hunt me for the rest of my life. Mulnaenmyung - first the broth tasted weird and had a weird aftertaste. I don't know if the broth was old or what but it was the worst broth I ever had!! No amount of vinegar and/or mustard helped. Gogi naenmyung or basically their version on bibim naenmyung.... It comes with beef and pork - the sauce was under seasoned, bland and after one taste, your asking yourself- "what did I get myself into". As not to waste food, we ate all the noodles as much as we could... but yeah not worth it. If I could give -5 starts I really would!! The restaurant should be banned from serving these noodles!! PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT ORDER THE NOODLES!!!!!

Yelp
So good. So authentic. Dont think twice and plz try. The cold noodles are the best in La. 너무 맛있어요. 오래오래 장사해주세요. 많이 파세요

Yelp
Very old-school, stripped-down, un-fancy, straightforward food. If you were a Korean grandfather, this is where you'd go at least once a week. Get the mul naengmyeon!
google avatar

Michele C.

Yelp
TLDR: food tastes great! But it is pretty pricey. - food recs - We got the naengmyeon and galbi! The naengmyeon was really refreshing and of course, they had the mustard and vinegar on the side so you can put as much as you desire. I don't normally like naengmyeon but this might have changed my mind! It's really light and refreshing, so definitely get this if you're in the mood for something cold during a hot day. It was a good size so I would recommend it to someone who's hungry and looking for only one food to try. The galbi tasted great, but my only thing is the size. It was $27 for like 3 ribs of galbi, so not the best price you can kind in Koreatown. That being said, it was cooked really well and I do recommend it for the taste. - wait time - I went at about 1 pm on a Saturday and it was pretty packed, but we were sat down immediately! - parking - Plenty of parking in the big parking area! You're pretty guaranteed to find a parking spot. Parking is free. - service - They're kind here! They have a lot of customers so they're always really busy.

Yelp
Standard old school Korean ajuma ajussi digs. Nothing fancy about this spot but the food will satiate the belly. It's real popular for the naeng myun cold noodles. Service is alright, they'll get you what you need and leave you in peace.

Yelp
There were 4 of us and 3 had the cold noodles and I had the hot one with rice and it was delicious! I wish we could have taken it with us to go on the plane:) I also ordered the soup with short ribs, barely dug into that as we were so full from our own order. I just wanted to try it all and all the little side dishes and our appetizer was on point. I love Korean restaurants because of all the side dishes:) I was glad a friend took us here because I would come back when I'm in town again. Stop by and try what I order because you will not be disappointed at all!

Yelp
SPICY COLD NOODS!! I had to try these out especially as the weather heats up. It may look intimidating and super spicy, but it actually isn't and is on the more sweeter side. They are served cold and the noodles have to be cut up further with scissors since they are super starchy. It comes with some pickled cucumbers, a hard boiled egg, and your choice of beef, pork, or skate wing (a fish that looks like a sting ray). It also comes with some kimchi and pickled daikon. Definitely a unique dish!! You'll also be served some hot broth as a starter. I don't know if this is sacrilege or not, but I actually like pouring some of the broth soup into the Spicy Cold Noodles to help make it a bit soupy. The lady that served us only spoke mainly Korean too and was super friendly! Oh, and it's in a plaza next to Mumu Bakery for some delish Crossant Taiyaki. Definitely check this place out too!!
google avatar

Jasmine N.

Yelp
They have a shared parking lot! This is not a hip, young place but a restaurant that people either grew up with or somewhere that the older folks grab a quick breakfast with $7.99 morning specials. Gogi naengmyeon - the myeon/noodles are good and done well, slices of pork belly and beef, pickled cucumbers and half a hard-boiled egg. LA Galbi - really good. Amount of meat was a little less than I expected though
google avatar

Rita C.

Yelp
full transparency: I ordered off of doordash so this is a takeout order! the noodles weren't separated from the icy soup. to be honest, not my favorite naengmyeon place but I would want to try it in person before making any permanent judgements. the noodles had a sorta crunchy texture? the soup itself was a little bland and after i poured the vinegar, that was the only thing I tasted. i got it with pork and the fat of the pork somehow stuck to the top of my mouth and made my mouth feel weird :( tbh i will try again to see what it is like fresh!

Cindy K.

Yelp
Worst customer service!! Grandma at the counter is so racist. My husband left his debit card after purchase kimchi soup so I went to pick up his card. I said " I'm here for debit card" and She said " Mexican ?" What the hell, not all Hispanic is Mexican. I'm Korean and not all Asian is Chinese. Never going back !!!

Anthony L.

Yelp
As good as it gets. If you don't know you just don't know. And if you disagree you should go to a Korean food fusion pop up. Places like these you have to know what to order and for the Yelpers that have wrote bad reviews it's cause they don't know what to order or have no other platform to base it off of
google avatar

Yelp
Love the cold noodles at this place! I first tried this place when they had a location in Rowland Heights. That location no longer exists but I am happy to find them in Koreatown! Everything is delicious as I remember it to be. I love their cold noodles because they use the white thin noodles rather than the brown ones. I think the brown ones are buckwheat and the white ones are the potato noodles. I like the white ones because they have a nicer chewy texture and the noodles are thinner. Besides cold noodle (their specialties), they have a bunch of other things on their menu too if you want to eat something hot. Their complimentary broth is delicious too! They serve it in a pot and a teacup.
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
It was super hot today, and my friends and I really wanted to have a refreshing dinner to cool off, and we haven't tried this place before. This is my first time eating Korean cold noodles, so I didn't quite know what to expect. We ordered the mul naengmyeon and a potato pancake -- both were fricken delicious!!! It really hit the spot after a sweaty, tiring day!! The noodles were perfectly chewy and go so well with the icy beef broth. The potato pancakes were crispy and soft. Also, they serve you some hot broth when you sit down, and it complemented the meal very well. I'd imagine that people crave this more when it's hot, but they also have so many hot dishes (perfect for the colder months) that I'd love to try when I'm in SoCal again. Prices are super affordable and unbeatable, and service was wonderful :)

Yelp
I stopped by here for their breakfast special and it was a pretty solid (and yummy) deal! Breakfast Special, 7 Days, 7-10am Choice Of: - Beef & Radish Soup - Soybean (Doenjang) & Spinach Soup - Beef & Bean Sprouts Soup **Comes with rice and sides! I had the Soybean & Spinach Soup and I was massive! I'd say it's a little bigger (maybe almost double the size) than a typical soondubu pot. It was super flavorful! I think soybean soup is sometimes an acquired taste, since some people aren't a fan of the fermented soybean flavor. But I personally thought it was very flavorful and not as strong tasting as soybean soup tends to be. There were a lot soybean sprouts and spinach, so it's super filling! If you want a safer option, go for the Beef and Radish Soup (true comfort dish). The sides (banchan) it came with was kimchi, potato, pancake, and radish -- plus egg and rice! Overall, our meal for two came out to $16ish after tip. Great deal for a filling meal, although I do wish more sides were included.

Yelp
I have to give 5 stars for their naeng myun. I grew up with my parents taking us to the original location on Ardmore and I thought all naeng myun was like Ham Hung's naeng myun. As I got older learned that all naeng myun is not the same and I made enough trips back to Koreatown just to get the original and best naeng myun I knew. But I do have some tips and comments after my last visit. Even though they are open at 7 AM, naeng myun, the dish that the restaurant's famous for, is not available until 9:30 or 10 AM. They actually need to make and prep the dough for the noodles and so they offer other morning specials. We were going to get some basic soup and rice dishes to try to wait it out until the naeng myun was available. It must have been a bad morning to try other items on the menu because they forgot to put the tofu in our soy bean paste soup, and also the kimchi jigae had a heavy tomato/ketchup taste perhaps the wrong red sauce was used? One of the banchan dishes that shouldn't have been spicy was extremely spicy as well. Not sure if there was a big mixup in the kitchen but everything seemed a little off. We actually returned later to take some naeng myun home once it was available. I'll have to remind myself to come closer to lunch time so I don't have to opt for other things on the menu.
google avatar

Mina K.

Yelp
I honestly didn't have any expectation coming here. And oh man were my mind and taste buds blown away. I got the galbi jjim and it was legitimately the best galbi jjim I've ever had. You can tell everything in the pot was marinated for hours. The meat was so tender and flavorful. The pot was also pretty big! Definitely meant to share.

Yelp
Curious to find more (affordable) Korean BBQ in the area, I decided to grab dinner via ordering ahead on the Eat24 app. I'm a big fan of "So (Angus Beef) Bulgogi" so I ordered that combo plus the "Dak (Chicken) Bulgog" combo which each runs $13.99-14.99 each. The sides include kimchi and probably some of the best white rice I've ever had! Soup is also included but found it watery and so-so. Nevertheless, I go for the Beef which was delicious! The chicken is good too but as far as KBBQ goes, the beef is tops! Ham Hung is in a small strip mall off of Olympic and Harvard with a parking lot shaped as a "T." I found parking, and made my way over for my pickup. Staff was polite but didn't quite understand English, but luckily, I pulled out my order confirmation and she immediately grabbed my order. I'll definitely be back for the pricing and specials. This is a hole in the wall so eating in is not fancy at all; expect that mom n pop experience. And add extra rice on that, I'm still thinking about it after the fact!

Yelp
It had been 15 years or so since I dined here last- always loved their naengmyuns. I am giving it an avg rating because I felt it was kind of a rip off that I spent $100 including tip for two for lunch. We ordered each a hwe naengmyun and a galbi to share for lunch. I was wondering why they hadn't offered a comho. There are so many places that will offer combos for a lot less allover LA.
google avatar

Fran L.

Yelp
Typical hole in the wall Korean traditional restaurant with neighbors and takeout customers keeping the place open. Staple foods like NangMyeon with cold thin buckwheat noodles and excellent GgackDdooGi kimchi made of turnip squares and simple Banchan of two or three dishes were adequately prepared for the discerning Korean food critics. However the place is dated, one server for ten plus tables give solid four stars. The second main dish was fantastic, the cabbage rib soup, old fashioned bean paste based soup and two large beef ribs with generous meat on it tasted pretty decent. The style of cooking was very much home cooking with $14 average prices that are well below your average over priced Los Angeles Korea Town restaurants! I will definitely go back. Parking was free and adequate with security guard. Next door and the small mall were all busy with King Mandoo restaurant and two pastry shops. Mukbang friends: Try You Must!

Yelp
I WOULD GIVE 0 STARS IF I COULD!! We ordered $75 worth of takeout and it only takes 5 mins at most to get home. The food was HORRIFIC. We ordered hwe naengmyun and mul naengmyun and the noodles lit broke off into tiny pieces!!!?? We called the "manager" and he said he cooked the noodles on the spot but.. what noodles break off and melt at the slightest touch if made on the spot?? I took a video but it doesn't give me an option to upload it. If only I could.. The picture of the green onion was terrible too. It wasn't fresh at all and it was flat. By the condition it arrived in, it's def. over a week old or something. And don't get me started on their side dishes!! Holy crap I literally almost threw up from it. As shown in the pictures, I tried their pickled dish (?) and the amount of vinegar doesn't cover how spoiled it is!! They mixed it with perilla leaf and it made the kimchi spoiled. I spit it out as soon as I put it in my mouth. To top it off, their service was horrible. The manager said he couldn't do anything and kept saying that he made the noodles on the spot. We had to go back to the restaurant in person to prove a point and get some kind of refund for the disgusting food.

Yelp
As many noted, this is a hole-in-the-wall that serves solid Korean fare in a no-frills, old-school manner. We didn't try their famous cold noodles this time. But the BBQ was on point. Everything tasted good. Put it this way: it passed muster with my picky Korean wife. And all the stuff about indifferent service? We left feeling like we were fast friends with the server. All in all, ta bong! We'll be back for those noodles on our next regular trip to La-la land.

Yelp
Ordered 3 soups for delivery, and the quality is outrageously BAD. For their beef soup, there's only ONE small piece of beef in it, and it costed $12.99. For their other one, the meat in it is all fatty little pieces that basically aren't human food. Holy cow I can't believe how this place can possibly be in K town for so long. Absolutely ABSURD, esp for the meat qualities and quantities. Don't come here, and don't order from here.

Yelp
Service is terrible but you just can't beat the food here. The one and only thing you need go get here is the spicy cold noodles. They aren't that spicy so don't worry. It's a traditional Korean style noodle that comes with raw skate. If you are familiar with this dish and wish you could get something similar to ones you have had in Korea then this is your best bet!! I love this place so much and always wish I could come here every time I visit LA!!

Yelp
If you want eat Mul Naengmyeon, please do not go here. Noodles like a rubber band & don't need to mention about the cold beef broth. We requested the check right away. And the server doesn't care why we didn't eat that much. Worst experience ever. Save your money.

Yelp
Not the best nengmyun in ktown, but I do come here occasionally since they open really really early for a Korean restaurant. I've tried other things on their menu, but I would stay away from anything other than their noodles (nengmyun). I've tried their chicken kalgooksoo before and it wasn't that good. Considering the prices, they do give you a lot of food which is always good. The sari (extra noodles) is almost as big as a normal size nengmyun portion. Service needs to be improved. I'm usually the one getting up to grab cups and water (which I don't mind, but please don't give me a look when I do so). I usually order the mool nengmyun with the galbi. Again, not the best nengmyun in town, but it's decent and pretty filling. The galbi is pretty good so I'd recommend it as it goes really well with the noodles. My mom and brother usually order the bibim nengmyun, I hear it's good too. To recap, just come for the nengmyun!!

Yelp
This place doesn't get all the love it deserves. They're my top spot for Korean food for delivery. Two things to get, their Seolleongtang or any of their cold noodles (I LOOOOVE their raw skate fish) I've never been to their brick and mortar and have only tried their delivery. My first experience was trying them back in the 2021's when covid was still crazy sauce and the company I work for was giving out Grubhub $25 credits for people working overtime to order delivery for dinner. I've tried about every Korean delivery restaurant and this one takes the top spot for their seolleongtang and handmade cold noodles. I think I've ordered their seolleongtang almost 20 times by now all by delivery. Every time the broth is deliciously rich and meaty tasting, and the thin meat cuts are always very fresh tasting and extremely tender (it never tastes refrigerated which I've had on several occasions at other seolleongtang restaurant delivery places). They also give a TON of sliced meat which I really love. Their cold noodles are also extremely consistent. Their sauce is the best flavored of all the delivery places and more importantly, their noodles are always consistently bouncy and delicious. It's not hard to see why theirs tastes the best to me if you're doing the delivery option as I do. The other best deal I highly recommend people try is their seafood pajeon. This also takes the Academy Award for best seafood pajeon in Koreatown. Specifically for the size and quality of seafood. The quality of the seafood is extremely fresh. I don't know how to explain it, the texture of all the seafood bits isn't gummy, it's perfectly firm and tender at the same time. It's more similar to the type of seafood I've had in an expensive restaurant rather than in a seafood pajeon. Value-wise it was around $32 and the thing weighs like...10lbs. And that's 10lbs of seafood, not dough. This thing could feed a small army. It tastes even better the next day when you warm it up and it comes in a pizza box it's so big. Their haemul soft tofu soup is also really good. I love the blue crab in it, and again, the seafood quality in the soup is incredible. This place takes first place in my books for the best delivery in Ktown. They packaged everything extremely well so there will be no spilling, it's very secure. They have the consistency of a Michelin starred restaurant. It tastes good every time I order.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE. This is by far the worst Korean food I've had, considering i eat Korean food every single day. I was there yesterday with my coworkers, and was treated horribly. We ordered a pork rib dish and got something that looked exactly different taking into consideration the written and visual description. When it was brought up to the server she was inconsiderate and said "just eat it, if you don't like it then take it home" she then continued to pressure us into eating it and proceeded to mess with the dish with chopsticks. A couple minutes into the dinner she brought the check, she was very rude. Please don't spend your money here..

Yelp
They specialize in naengmyeon, so just get the naengmyeon. Whichever version you like (raw sole, spicy beef & pork, sole beef & pork, or beef & pork in cold broth) seriously just get it. That's what they are known for, that's what they've been doing, that's what the special machine and recipe is for. Don't be surprised when you order something else and are underwhelmed because you didn't order the made in-house specialty. Oh yeah, the warm tea/broth drink is pretty delicious too.

Yelp
05/12/21 Food and service, nothing positive to write about, however I'm hopeful My experience will be helpful. 4 order $60.16 with tip signed for $70.00 just ok. Looked at my bank charge and it was for $72.72 called and a woman answered , she insisted that i talk to her, after explaining several time she turned the call over a man ( claims he is the owner ) after explaining again, he said he has a answer, he said there is automatic charge for mandatory tip and it will be adjusted later, i said ok and with a suggestion to perhaps let the customers know a head of time in the future, not only was heji very rude about it and without a apology, i was told "don't use a Card if you know know how to use one " i guess i offended the man by making a suggestion , it's not the money it's principal. Oh well Korean restaurants are a DIME A DOZEN.

Yelp
I've been loyal to this restaurant for literally 11 years and still am and continue to be, it's so delicious the serving sizes are pretty damn good for what you pay for and so flavorful, the environment is really calm and relaxing even when it's full, the service is really nice they're attentive and try their best to accommodate you and if you think otherwise you probably were the problem for sure. I would say the parking lot is sometimes really packed because it gets busy but you can always look for street parking if you really want to dine in. So grateful for this place I miss when their soups would be 11 dollars

Yelp
This is the best cold noodle restaurant in LA. Ham Hung is a province in North Korea that's very well known for the cold noodle. If you are in the area, you must try this place. One hactic part is parking. Parking kinda sucks during lunch and dinner time. There is a parking security so he can help you find a parking tho. So far, I've tried "Sashimi spicy cold noodle = Hui Nang Myun" and "Cold noodle with Broth = Mul Nang Myun" They give you hot broth in a thermos. It's super good. The spicy noodle isn't too crazy but if you are not that good with spice, don't mix more than what it comes as served. It's served as already mixed well with spicy sauce. But if you mix more, it will get spicier. Oh, and you can add Kbbq beef 1 person portion at 6.99 when you order a cold noodle. (I think it was 6.99. Maybe it's 6?) As I'm writing this, I'm craving for the cold noodle... I'm definitely coming back again and again.

Yelp
First time trying this place, because I saw the video on FB about their cold noodle. LOL. It was EPIC. First, after picked one of the cold noodle, ahjumma served me the drink (which I did not order. Haha). I thought, OK, it must be a tea . Then, when I drink it (it was hot), tastes like ginger. Hahaha. I thought, is it ginger tea? NO! It taste like broth (Not sure if it was beef or pork broth!). And I saw lots of people drank it (comfortably). LOL (I must be crazy). Ahjumma didn't understand english very well, so I decide not to ask what kind of broth is that. When the food is coming, ahjumma asked if I want the noodle to be cut or not, and I was so blanked . But she said Yes, huh? And just cut my noodle immediately *epic! (With a big scissor!) Then, I taste the noodle, and realized, whaaat? It is COLD noodle. I mean, Literally COLD! (They put ICE with the noodle) it was like! Argh! This is my first time! Crazy! But was worth to try. Overall, the noodles taste chewy, also it is super thin (i heard that It is handmade noodle). And it is yummy. If you feel super cold when taste those noodle, just drink that HOT broth together. Hahaha. (Don't forget to visit your dentist later on). Thanks for these unforgettable experience. i will love to try again sometime.

Yelp
We came kinda early in the day so there weren't any customers yet but they greeted us promptly and we got seated. The menu is straightforward and I got the naengmyeon with marinated skatefish. The portion was bigger than I imagined and the skatefish was really good! I couldn't finish my bowl but I had to finish all the skatefish. Nothing to complain about this place, they took decent covid precautions. Parking is easily accessible and was free when we went early in the day. Would visit again if craving this and in the area.

Yelp
Gogi naengmyun here is really good! Not too spicy, nice pieces of pork belly and beef brisket, and very flavorful. $13

Yelp
Ordered the saekimi naengmyeon via Grubhub, was not disappointed! This was a great first experience - the noodles were bursting with sharp, acidic flavor and pleasantly slippery while the various other toppings such as cucumber, pickled radish, skate, and beef added extra crunch or mellow flavors to balance out the sour sauce that the dish came in. Not to mention, the order came with a piping hot cup of bone soup, which was mellow enough to sip alongside each bite of noodle. Very, very nice. The portion size, in addition to the bonus broth, is also enormous. It's easily two meals in a single container, or one very, very bloated meal for anyone feeling particularly gluttonous. If you're hungry, you'll certainly have no worries about getting good value for your dollar. As far as ordering went, the restaurant prepared my noodles with good speed - my order arrived in roughly half an hour. Driving was at least half the time, meaning that they had my order ready to go fairly quickly. It's also a nice touch that they carefully wrap their liquids and double knot the bags, so you can tell it's not a slapdash effort when it comes to packaging. In summary: gigantic portion sizes, impressive value, fast service, tasty sour cold noodles. If you like cold noodles, this is a solid choice to get 'em. If you're hungry and a big eater, this place can fill you up fast. If in doubt on what to order, get their cold noodles.
