A Local's Guide to the Best Restaurants in Detroit | Bon Appétit

"Just blocks away from James Beard Award–winnerAl-Ameer(that moujadara!) and a favorite spot of the late artist Mike Kelley,Cedarland(that lentil soup!),Hamido(the Dearborn location) is the zenith of Detroit-metro Lebanese food. Expect long lines for carryout; orders written, unaccountably, on cigarette cartons; and a family-style dining room that’s at capacity every sundown of Ramadan. The chicken shawarma, layered with bits of lemon zest, is part dark meat and becomes al-pastor-level crispy; the foul (a fava bean breakfast bowl) is bathed in olive oil and comes with tomato, onion, and bright pink pickled turnips." - ByBen Hall

Stopped in for lunch and was seriously impressed. We ordered the Hamido’s Special, and it absolutely hit the spot flavorful, fresh. The service was just as great—our server was friendly & welcoming. If you haven’t tried this place yet, you should!

Google
Always fresh and delicious! never disappointed! first time back in many years and loved it! Everything was perfect! Especially the Service, Nour took care of us. She was sweet and so friendly thank you Nour!! Must try the sujuk sub. Crispy and yummy!! We’ll see you next time we’re In the area!

My family and I recently dined in at Hamido after being in the area, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we made all day! From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by the staff, and the atmosphere felt inviting and comfortable. Our server, Nour, truly stood out. Her bright smile and kind demeanor added a special touch to our experience. She was attentive, friendly, and made us feel right at home. As for the food, it was absolutely phenomenal! Every dish was bursting with flavor and incredibly fresh. You can really taste the quality and care that goes into the cooking. The restaurant was super clean and so was the food, which made us feel even more confident about dining there. 10/10 experience! Delicious food, excellent service, and a genuinely welcoming environment. We’ll definitely be returning soon!

Nour was so kind and very patient with me. Food was so good I ate it all and still had enough to take home. 👍🏽

Google
The chicken is great I can’t complain about it! But the FALAFEL was burned and tasted like fried onions and it smells really bad!! The veggie sub was disgusting I didn’t eat it! It’s literally taste like leftover fries with old tomato sauce! Girls at the register were very rude and unprofessional! Bad experience🤌🏻

Google
Extremely disappointed in this place. My husband was a frequent customer because it’s the closest place to our house that has farooj. He’s always had problems with their staff and wait time. They take forever although we always call In advance to place the order. Whenever he goes to pick it up over a half hour it’s NEVER ready. This last time we said whatever we’ll try them again because he was really craving it. He got there and of course it wasn’t ready. By the time he got home the chicken wasn’t as crispy as it usually is but it was fine. I opened the pickle container and couldn’t believe my eyes. Disgusting, moldy pickles. I wouldn’t even feed this to an animal. NEVER going back.

Yelp
I love a roasted chicken and judge harshly if a recipe restaurant or store makes them. Hamido's is one of the BEST whole roasted chicken out there. Ita a flavorful, juicy and the pita it's sitting on top of soaks up extra juices to make it even more delicious. Eat it with your hands, take a piece of juicy pita and rip a piece of chicken, small dip into hummus and enjoy. Just make sure to have a stack of napkins with you.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food, good prices. I usually get rotisserie chicken and falafel. You can make 2-3 meals out of that. Chicken will be a little bit dry after a day but make sure you get extra garlic spread and tahini sauce to dip your pita and chicken in. Fresh falafel, salad and hummus is good too. Nothing fancy, just good food.

Yelp
The food was ok if there's no other choice. Fatoush salad was old. Shawarma was dry and hard. Did I get old food because I'm American?

Yelp
we came in and it didn't look busy, around 3 on a Sunday. Then it got packed with other diners and carry out orders. It took several minutes for someone to acknowledge us. The server was not very friendly, but she was pretty efficient. The food was great. We got a "platter for 2" I don't recall what it was called on the menu. It comes with brown rice (only rice option, has meat and spices in it. I wish they would offer a pilaf or yellow type of rice), Shish tawook, shish kabob, kafta, meat and chicken Shawarma, plus fattoush and hummus for $40. Definitely fed 3+ ppl. We also ordered a dozen falafel, which are some of the best around. One of the kids ordered a cheeseburger and he seemed to like it. Really good curly fries. The remodel of the restaurant looks nice, new tables and chairs. I realize that I hadn't ever reviewed Hamido before. I love the garlic sauce here.

Yelp
Don't understand how this place was heavily recommended. The chicken shwarma was mediocre in taste, the pita was grocery store level stuff, the fillings were fine. The falafel was good.

J H.

Yelp
The cashiers are sexist and racist. I feel so violated and disrespected. They Didn't even say thank you .
google avatar

Carmelo G.

Yelp
They worried of tips only. Rud didnt give me back my change she said that that was a tip

Yelp
DO NOT RECOMMEND. Unfair, overcharges completely, slow service. Overall, definitely will NOT be coming back.

Yelp
My brother went to Hamido with a friend and told me it was the best chicken shawarma he ever had! He said the chicken was incredibly juicy, the pita was grilled to a nice crisp, and service was quick. I was in the Dearborn heights area for a haircut, so my plan was to try it out afterward. I typed it in on Google Maps, and was excited that it was only a couple minutes down the road! Unfortunately, I failed to realize that I went to the wrong location (I went to the Dearborn Heights one instead of Dearborn) until I already placed my order. I got my chicken shawarma, and it was...decent. Chicken was moist and flavorful, everything was executed pretty well, but it was kind of small and it was nothing to write home about. I also got an order of falafel, which was pretty greasy but had good flavor. Service was pretty slow and I was the only one in there at lunch time. The Yelp ratings for this location are a whole star lower than the Dearborn location, and based on the reviews, the other one really is a lot better. I definitely want to try the Dearborn location now!

Yelp
1. Best farrouj ever and that is why they get 1 star only the food, humus, fattouche, fries it's all good. It ends there 2. Worst ABSOLUTE WORST customer service. They pretend to look for your order and pretend to call your name to the chef and then get busy with something else. 3. I placed my order for 7:45pm at 1pm. They said yes for sure. I placed it strategically for 7:45 so I can have time to drive to canton by 8:15 to get food for my grandma. I arrived there at 7:35-7:40, there was 50 other people. So I said it's okay I'll wait, by 8:05 I still didn't get my food I lost my mind at this point, the people in the front just laugh in your face. 4. I ordered 2 box of rice, they tell me we don't have rice, I ordered it at 1pm? Why take my order if you don't have rice? Say we don't have rice sand I can't give that to you. 5. I didn't leave until 8:16, my grandma had already eaten whatever leftovers were in the fridge because I didn't get home until 8:50pm. Never again in my life will I step foot in this establishment 6. If you want to get laughed at, want them to lie to your face, want them to bs you, this is the place for you. My night was ruined, $80 later no one ate.

Yelp
**I do not want this review to reflect that of the Dearborn location** Solid two stars from me for this establishment. To begin with the service here is not as great as it is within Dearborn. The Dearborn Heights location is always something that needs to be worked on and there are many reasons why. 1. They are always holding back their product from their customers and do not believe they are wrong. As in the picture I posted I order a dozen of falafel and was only given 2 small take away sauce containers of tahini. 2. You will never order an item and get it completely within your bag for take out. Be warned: you should always check your bag before leaving the establishment to ensure everything you pay for is there. I cannot begin to speak about the times I have ordered food from there, came home, and realized that I had to drive back to get what I came for. 3. They do play favoritism towards the Arab community. Being someone who does not look Arab but being able to speak Arabic I have experienced firsthand that I was described as a "cheap person" for asking for more garlic sauce when I was only given 1 take away container for a whole chicken. In my honest opinion, this facility is not worth your time and you should rightfully take your business else-where within he Dearborn/Dearborn Heights community. I repeat again, **I do not want this review to reflect that of the Dearborn location which has always been top notch at outputting great service and food in a decent manner of time. **

Yelp
For the outrageously extensive wait time on ONE chicken shawarma, you would've expected it to at least be well made.. Nope. How can you make a bad shawarma? I have no clue, it's arguably one of the simplest middle-eastern foods there is, which took 30 minutes to make by the way. With all the competition in the area, I have no clue how this place is still up, but do yourself a favor and stay away.
google avatar

Martha R.

Yelp
They have the best ever meat shawarma sandwich. I have been a lot of places, and both Hamido locations are by far the most delicious. Sure, it's because it's extra fatty - but I just don't care. The tabbouli and hummus are on par with other places around town. When I was in there, a guy ahead of me was throwing a fit about the order that he placed at the other Hamido (in East Dearborn.) I found him to be extremely annoying (like it was their fault.) The staff handled it with grace: called the other location to cancel the order and make it for him. He never even said thank you. So I'd say they have some excellent customer service... I'm not sure I could have handled the guy as nicely as they did. I actually almost told the guy to calm down. Ha. Location and parking are a little difficult/annoying. Regardless, if I was in this area more often, I'd spend a fair amount of money here. :)

Yelp
I enjoyed the experience Dearborne Heights has a very diverse med/Arab population and this food was catering to just that. The meat was top quality and the service was fast

akram a.

Yelp
I bought combo shawarma togo from them , the bread had mold in it. They didn't seem "sorry" for what happened when I called them. They didn't even offer to replace it. We end up throwing it in the garbage. My kids didn't have lunch that day. I assume the whole food was wrapped with mold bread. Yelp
For a period of many years, I have been eating tender grilled chicken at this restaurant, which is distinguished by its freshness and taste, since month. The chicken is large in size and its meat is strong ,not fresh tough, very tough and not palatable at all. It seems that it is from Kroger or any American store I mean not halal. Otherwise, how could this sudden change occur, which is very well known to everyone who tastes it, especially those who used to frequent this restaurant. I try to give that meat to the cat it rejected to eat ?

Lailah A.

Yelp
ZERO STARS. Negative star. I received fries that looked like they were chewed and spit out. They gave me fries with food all over them and sauces. I do not recommend this place ever. The staff is rude and treat you differently if you don't look the same culture as them. The ambiance is uncomfortable and I feel like everyone just wants to say something rude. The workers don't speak up they whisper. Food sucks, service sucks, ambiance sucks, only go here if you're looking for a bad time!!
google avatar

Yelp
YET AGAIN WRONG ORDER. Asked and paid for jalapeños on boyfriends chicken schwarma. Asked 4 times! Guess I'll have to continue to go across the street to DIB.

Yelp
Dad and I went to grab some shawarma's after a long day of work. Oh boy do we regret it. We grabbed 2 meat shawarma's and 2 chicken shawarma's. It cost about $32 (which is ridiculous btw) but they say they use "High quality ingredients" so we were fine with the price. Oh my GOD when I tell you it was the most disgusting, dirty, old sandwich's I've ever eaten, it would be an understatement. Chicken tasted so bad and the garlic sauce tasted like absolute TRASH. The meat was rubbery and chewy and completely uneatable. Felt like vomiting throughout the rest of my already terrible day. I have pictures of the food but I wont post them so I don't ruin your day or make you yak. Service was good.

Painter L.

Yelp
Disappointing. Although this place has been newly remodeled and looks great since I've been here last (2 years ago), the atmosphere is lacking: the place was empty, and no music. The waitress had a big smile, but was not attentive. The french fries were cold. The falafel sandwich fell apart when cut in half. The small plate of hommus was generous and tasty, ; and olive oil is on the table for dipping; but the bread was flat (fell apart). Bottled water was automatically put on the table, and I asked the price (50 cents), and the bread was individually wrapped; I suspect for safety. It is wheelchair accessible if somebody opens the door for you.
google avatar

Scotty P.

Yelp
You want to wait an hour for cold food? This is the place to go! Told it would be 30 min for my take out to be ready. Went there and they said it would take a little longer. 25 min longer. When I got my platter of food, it was cold. I guess the 12 year olds that they hire can't read names and didn't know my food was ready and just had me wait for nothing. I have never walked out from food I ordered no matter what happened but I was so close to telling them to keep it and leave. PLEASE HIRE ADULTS TO DEAL WITH CUSTOMERS!! Not children that are busy gossiping. Will never go back.
google avatar

Hasanen A.

Yelp
The food is decent, but the service is beyond sad. Whether I'm picking up food for me or a doordash, I'll be standing in there waiting for 30 minutes and the food becomes cold because multiple workers, but just one, forget about my existence as I stand infront of their eyes invisible and forgotten. This isn't the first time this happened which is why it's so frustrating. It really hurts the amount of money I can make dashing. Terrible customer service.

Mickey V.

Yelp
I went in to Hamidos after not having been there in quite a while. I ordered a dinner for two. It cost a bit more but that was expected in hard times. What I didn't expect was the sneaky way they found if giving LESS food as well as raising prices. Underneath the food were several pieces of thick lettuce which took up about a third of the bottom of the tray. By all means raise the prices, but don't raise the prices AND give less food. This was sneaky and doesn't speak well of this business. I won't be going back.
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
Still the best place to get rotisserie chicken, but everything else is just ok. They got my order wrong which always sucks as everyone knows. Ordered Makaniq sub and a couple chicken shawarmas, a meat shawarma that didn't make it in the bag. The sub was not toasted well, barely any pickles, just ok. The chicken shawarma is what was disappointing since I've had some amazing sandwiches here in the past. Not sure how to describe it, but the chicken was just bland, and the bread not crispy. Hope they turn it around here, I've been eating at Hamido's for 20 years.
google avatar

Allison F.

Yelp
I've stopped here for a few informal dinners over the past year and it's always been pretty tasty. I'm boring so I stick with their chicken shawarma, but what a delicious shawarma it is! For $3.50, you get a huge portion of chicken, garlic sauce and pickles (none for me please) wrapped in a fresh pita. It's heaven. The husband gets the shawarma as well with the addition of their fattoush salad. Mmm their fattoush looks and smells incredible. If I ate vegetables, I'd be all over it. The place isn't much to look at, and for the love of little baby Jesus, do not ever use the bathroom! Think of it as a Middle Eastern diner. Some cheaper dishes, some moderate ones, but nothing too fancy when it comes to atmosphere and service.
google avatar

Brittany R.

Yelp
This is the place I go to every time I visit Michigan! The best hummus I've ever had!

Paul J.

Yelp
Recommended by a friend. I ordered the Chicken Shawarma plate and a side of hummus. The rice had a spice that I couldn't place that I didn't like. The chicken had a similar taste. You get a generous portion of ok food. The hummus was fantastic. I spent $27 and was underwhelmed.
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
Tried this place on a whim today and was very pleased ! Ordered the lunch special Sandwich-soup-fries for $7.99 (you cant beat the price). The chicken shawarma wasn't the BEST I've ever eaten but it was GOOD !!! The chicken lemon rice soup was GREAT !! Fries good ! The portion of fries and soup were small but it's perfect size to go with the sandwich ! Excellent Customer service ! Ordered inside and food was ready in about 10 min :) Will definitely eat here again
google avatar

Yelp
Super excited a few years ago to see Hamido occupy what was at one point my favorite donut shop in the area. If my beloved Sunbeam Donuts couldn't hang around then I at least wanted something good to come in in it's stead. Since then a number of cafes/diners have come and gone but Hamido was the one that I finally was willing to give a chance due to it's awesome location on Warren. This one isn't quite as great as their first location but it's A-OK. The service is fast, the food is cheap and tasty (although I could do with a little more of a garlic in the garlic sauce), and it's so close to my house so I get a schwarma fix when I need it. The space isn't anything special but I'm usually in and out pretty quickly so I'm not there for ambiance. Overall it's a great local lunch spot but it doesn't quite live up the awesomeness that is the original location. It may not be a delicious cream filled puff of deep fried dough but I'll take it!
google avatar

Deborah W.

Yelp
Best sandwiches hands down. Every item I've had pops with flavor. Unlike other restaurants, they appear to have enough wait staff.

Carole H.

Yelp
I love their meat Shwarma sandwich.. plus the garlic sauce I get extra on the side.. It's just incredible..!!!! No other compares..!!!
google avatar

Mazen A.

Yelp
I live literally two blocks down from the original Dearborn location and my family has gotten the broiled chicken from here for years! However, whenever I'm in the other side of town, I have to get the steak melt because they're the only location that sells it. It never disappoints. But they only get 4 stars rather than 5 today because they never put steak in my order even tho that's what I asked for, it was kabob instead. This never happened before. I hope it's not their new thing.
google avatar

Zein K.

Yelp
I haven't tried the soup when I did my first review . The chicken lemon ride soup was actually phonemenal . So I will give a 4 star
google avatar

T L.

Yelp
Ok , food ok price .. probably wouldn't eat here again . I have had better ... customer service is less than desirable

M H.

Yelp
We went there and dined in last weekend and he charged me tips 18% extra without even asking me and not only this he also charged me another extra 5% on my bill I guess this is for using my credit card even though I used my debit card I didn't see this extra charge until I came home and looked at my credit card account I mean he is very busy but why being greedy like this , this is very disappointed
google avatar

Rebecca A.

Yelp
First and foremost... come to Hamido for the food, not for the service. Once you get over that, the convenience of this place and tasty food is worth giving carry-out a shot. I needed a quick lunch today and was staying in the area, I didn't feel like driving to the many delish places that I am already familiar with. I stopped in to order a carryout at 1:45pm on a Tue. The parking is just okay- I can imagine it gets a little crazy at peak lunch. I placed an order of a shish tawook sandwich & a small fattoush. I waited 15 minutes, which was surprising, but they were busy with lots of pick-up orders. Eventually one of the 5 people behind the counter slung a bag over the counter and pointed at it. It was mine. That was the signal. And It had been sitting there for 10min. Overall, both items tasted good, my total was $8.75. The experience left much to be desired, but I would order again. Next time I will call it in, versus sitting there, watching them ignore me! If this place is convenient location-wise, it's worth a try. Otherwise, there are many excellent places around dearborn that outwardly value your patronage.
google avatar

Zehra F.

Yelp
My family and I are obsessed with the chicken shawarma here! It's probably safe to say that this review is based on their chicken shawarmas alone LOL. Having grown up in the Middle East, we have very high standards for the perfect chicken shawarma. Theirs is it. I've had so many at various restaurants in Dearborn and no other place comes close. The pita is soft and freshly made in house. The chicken is always fresh and the sauces are flavorful. We always request that they put hot sauce inside the sandwich, as well as fries inside. The only reason I'm giving it four stars and not five is that sometimes when I've gone to pick up an order, there is mad chaos at the register because they're popular and there are people waiting for delivery orders for online apps, people waiting to order, and people waiting to pick up their own food. This does create some chaos, but they try to handle it as well as they can. Like most places during the pandemic, they could probably use some more help. We will keep coming back though!

Christian Y.

Yelp
So L riz dddddddddddsddssssssssssssssssss I will be at home with you guys tomorrow night so I can get a little bit more of stuff to do with my stuff lol lol I just got home from work and I
google avatar

Hussein M.

Yelp
Where do I begin? This place is as cheap as they come. The pita bread was old and stale, you automatically get charged for bottled water (no other restaurant does this), and you get 1 side with your entrée (normally soup or salad and rice or fries). I was a little shocked when I ordered my second side and the waitress told me I only get one side. Anyways, all of these things I can deal with. What really got under my skin is when I got my boneless chicken, and it was extremely salty. I literally took two bites out of it and complained it was way too salty. At this point, I really lost my appetite and wanted it off the bill. Instead of taking it off the bill, they made me a half order of boneless chicken and put it in a to go box. They told me that they're not taking the whole order of boneless chicken off the bill, and they're giving a half order of boneless chicken on them. So in all actual, I got half order of boneless chicken but paid for a whole order. What a joke! My entrée wasn't touched, absolutely sucked, and I was forced to pay for it! I was with a party of 7 (4 adults and 3 kids). When we were going over our bill, we found the tip already included in our bill. 3 out of the 4 of us have all worked on tips before and tip GENEROUSLY. But my God, you shouldn't be forced to tip. What if the service was no good and we didn't feel think the server deserved that much? I used to look forward to eating at this place but after tonight I'll never step foot in this place again!
google avatar

Anushree J.

Yelp
This is some of the best Middle Eastern food I've had in a long time and I've lived in south Eastern Michigan my whole life. I also appreciate that they were open later than others on Christmas Eve. The falafel was fresh and delicious and the sandwiches we ordered were cooked and assembled perfectly. I would have had a picture to add but we were so hungry we ate everything so fast with nothing left. Will definitely come here again!

Honest R.

Yelp
Rating went up from 1 to 3 stars. They actually improved a lot. I'm glad they did. Best farroj in town. Some of other stuff are hit or miss but more hits that misses which is good. Keep improving. Thx
google avatar

Maddy B.

Yelp
beware you are charged for water. food was alright. shawarma is a little dry needs more sauce. tip is also included. overall - wouldn't go again
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
Solid for the price .. there's better places there's worse .. Definitely good if you're close by . Nothing special tho
google avatar

H. I.

Yelp
I went there with my boyfriend and we ordered chicken shawarma and a platter of fried kebbe. The place is clean and the staff are friendly. The shawarma was nicely presented and tasted good. I didn't think much o the kebbe as it was too moist from the inside. In general it was a good experience but I would like to try the meat shawarma next time.
google avatar

Jenna K.

Yelp
So good! I got a falafel pita which was loaded with goodies and my bf got two chicken shawarmas and couldn't even finish the first one because they were so filling. Veggie grape leaves were delish and beautifully displayed
google avatar

Valerie D.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and fresh food. I order a combo tray for 2 when I come here for $30. It comes with a good portion of fattoush salad and hummus on the side. All the rice and meat is extremely juicy and flavorful. Anytime I'm in dearborn for Arabic food I'll come here!

Cici L.

Yelp
Ordered chicken tawook and I literally got dog food. 3rd time I order here and my order is wrong or disgusting. Will never go back.

Yelp
So I've been going to both Hamidos for years ever since I can remember. Yes, I have had other local Lebanese resataurants as well such as Al Ameer, Country Grill, La Pita, New Yasmeen etc. but Hamidos has always done me right. There fattoush is second to none out there, shawarmas are always excellent, all there food is fresh and they are always busy for a reason! On top of it all they are really affordable and the portions are great! Don't get me wrong I have had a couple times(rare) over the years where the order was wrong when they get super busy like any other restaurant but if you take it back they will correct it, no questions asked. This is a review from somebody that visits the Dearborn Heights location 1-2 a week. Thanks Hamido!
