HANA-Kitcho

"The ‘Hana’ in the name comes from the restaurant’s location in Kyoto’s geiko quarter (the hanamachi or ‘flower quarter’). The interior is crafted by sculptors on the theme of a modern version of the Rinpa School of Painting. The floral pattern in the traditional washi paper decorating the ground floor corridor is also a nod to the hanamachi. The chequered pattern of moss and marble is a new experiment in décor. This is the only branch of Kyoto Kitcho that offers counter seating. Hassun appetisers are garnished with flowers in season, arranged to suggest views of Mt Arashi." - Michelin Inspector

Dining here was such a nice experience. It started already after our online reservation. They were very accommodating to our request to have a course without meat (which can sometimes be difficult in high end restaurants). The pictures don't do the food justice. Every dish looked absolutely beautiful. We had high expectations but everything was just as delicious as expected. This restaurant really deserves its praises. If you manage a reservation here, I highly recommend coming here for a high end kaiseki meal.

Every dishes are great! The fish liver, snow crab and sea urchin rice are the best! I’ve never had anything like those before.

Located in Gion , this one Michelin star restaurant requires taking a lift up to the third floor which will welcome by a server that was dressed as a geisha. It would be classed as as a Kaiseki style meal. We had our own private room which was an amazing experience. It was quiet, private and enjoyable. We had pre-booked the menu that we want to which was the eighth course the menu pretty much started in full swing within five minutes of rival Will given a complimentary super to start off with and we ordered our sake which was well priced and tasted excellent, which was called kitcho teio and we also had the Sakura- Akashi layer: also very nice Food started with a a crab dish with some vegetables ginger topping, which was beautiful presented. To make fish was a garoupa fish in a clear broth which was also very nice dish beautifully cook fish and this was followed by three types of seafood, tuna, prawn and a whitefish which I think might be flounder with two sources. The prawn head could be eaten as it was fried and tested very nice the fish and the prawn was very fresh. This was followed by a rice with red bean in it which was supposed to be the celebratory birthday dish. This is followed by the fish dish which came in a house and a boat presented with some summer flowers with eel eggs and a salad the side and three passcode fried items of scallop eel and Edamame and a sweet potato. All very tasted very good. Which of the seabass came with a beautifully glazed tomato and lightly battered okra. The fish was cook beautifully with some teriyaki sauce. The after main was the filler upper , which was rice with sweetcorn and miso soup with some pickles vegetable Rice with piece battered fish with the sweetcorn and the soy sauce with poured into the rice to enhance the taste. Dessert was a clear jelly fruits of mango and grapes in it with a mango with a beautiful design jelly and mint top. After this tea was served again. The service was excellent. We had a lady dress of a geisha serving as food and we were in a private room which was wonderfully private and we can focus on the food distraction externally.

Exquisite kaiseiki dishes with pleasant plating. The server was very careful when serving each dish. In particular, she served the rice with great attention and a gentle gesture so as not to compress the rice at all. The result was a really fluffy, soft, and tasty rice dish.

Polite yet friendly staff and exceptional food. They are accommodating for menu preferences if you call ahead and explain. Anyway you will need to book in advance as it is deservingly popular. Not your typical Kyoto restaurant, and the service is so incredibly kind and inviting.

We consider ourselves fortunate to have managed a dinner reservation on short notice at this restaurant. Indeed, it was memorable. Amongst our favorites: warm sakura blossom tea, scallop and uni in vinegar, small rice dish with clam, raw saury with ginger, marinated cube of beef tongue with red pepper, grilled ayu, and steamed Nigata steamed white rice with thin slices of tamago and dried shrimp.

I gave four stars to the ambient, presentation and services but deduct a star for the food which was good but unsurprising. Most importantly, it is just not worth the price which was very high. I prefer Kikunoi.

Yelp
This was one of the best meals we had while vacationing in Japan this year. The restaurant was recommended by our hotel when I inquired about kids friendly kaiseki restaurants and it did not disappoint. We had 2 sets of kaiseki with some upgrades and I ordered a few things from the a la carte menu for my 8yo daughter. Each dish was beautifully prepared and every bite was full of flavors. There wasn't a dish that I didn't like. The service was top notch. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. She took the time to explain and serve each dish to us. Highly recommended!

Yelp
We came here to experience a Michelin restaurant in historic Kyoto. Service was great (but service is great everywhere in Japan). The food was good, but not Michelin level - didn't wow my socks off. But the price was VERY inexpensive especially in comparison to NY or SF. But honestly, I've had better Japanese kaiseki in SF.

Yelp
Whoever is complaining about the price tag here is definitely missing the whole point - as the daughter of three Michelin-star restaurant Kitcho at Arashiyama, Hana is more like a local relaxed version of it; and still carries over the whole spirit. Once inside, I felt myself to be already part of the story. Similar to other Kaiseki places, menu was pre-selected, so we only decided to share a small bottle of Hana Kitcho sake, to celebrate my friend's birthday. As for the food, I could only say that every single dish impressed me. Loved the softness of steamed crab, the tenderness of grilled codfish, the crunchiness of the fried shrimp head and the lightness of lotus seeds. My favorite for the whole night is definitely the dessert - red bean with chestnut, pairing with the freshly prepared matcha...They really nailed the perfect ratio of red bean and sugar; and to me this is like eating in a heaven! Contrary to having a birthday meal in other places, here in Japan, restaurants usually bring you rice cooked with red beans, indicating a wish of long and healthy life. My friend and I truly had a wonderful time and left with nothing but satisfactory. Flawless! Impeccable! Loved every single piece of it!

Yelp
The service was outstanding so I'm hesitant to leave a mediocre review but felt it had to be done. We were most looking forward to our kaiseki dinner while in Kyoto and while the presentation was nice, the food left us underwhelmed. Made us even more appreciate the quality and deliciousness of N/Naka at home in LA. For those looking for Kyoto kaiseki, I'd recommend to skip this one for another spot. Unfortunately we only had time for 1 kaiseki meal during our stay. Maybe we had lower expectations for other meals, but causal lunch as Wabiya Korekido was more impressive than dinner here.

Yelp
Went to Hana kitcho in April 2019 and I still think about this meal. If you do one kaiseki style dinner this is a great place to do it. I did the 15,000 yen course and was not disappointed. The artistry in the presentation and preparation of every dish was apparent. The sashimi course, the vinegared prawn, and the salt grilled fish were all memorable

Yelp
A serious ripoff. Trading on the name of its sister restaurant in Arashiyama, it is overpriced mediocre Kaiseki restaurant. worse, they do a thing that Japanese restaurants used to do a lot: create a gaijin ghetto. In the so-called "counter," I sat with two other foreigners and when they left, it became, you could say, a private room. You could also say, a private tomb. The food was OK and the service, when they appeared to deposit the various dishes in front of you, were very friendly, but you were otherwise eating in a very sterile claustrophobic crypt. With so many good restaurants in Kyoto , and so little life to enjoy them all, this may be safely passed by.
