10 Best Places for Picnic Supplies in D.C., According to Eater Editors | Eater DC

"This beloved mom-and-pop market sells quality Japanese groceries that are hard to find anywhere else within the District. The snack options seem endless, ranging from wasabi-flavored rice crackers, matcha-caramel corn, and pistachio KitKats to seaweed salad and mochi stored in the fridge by the checkout counter. Fresh omusubi are available at 1 p.m. on the weekends and 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to Friday until they run out, with delicious fillings like salmon, chicken and mayo, and ume (plum). Nearby Malcolm X Park and the Reed Recreation Center, especially during Adams Morgan Movie Nights, are the perfect spots to chew on these Japanese treats. Since last year, there have been rumors that the shop may be closing at the end of the summer. An owner tells Eater that Hana could possibly close at the end of August if they do not sign a lease with the new landlord of its 1800s-era row house building, so definitely swing by to check out this 17-year-old market while you still can." - Emily Venezky

Rob Rubba's Washington D.C. City Guide

"I love Hanna Japanese Market. It has a well-curated selection of Japanese ingredients, snacks, and great quality rice. Regardless of the reason I'm shopping, I will always grab a few of the veggie onigiri next to the register before I dip out. Each Peach Market is another great stop for a night of cooking at home. They carry a wide selection of local and sustainable produce and dairy." - Rob Rubba

Ok, I have to give a 5 star. I was watching the tv show 居酒屋新干线 and the episode was about the guy went to Hachinohe City and was introduced to local delicacy special sauted squid ....guess what... I found it in Hana market the second day!

Google
A great one stop shop for so many quality Japanese products here. One small drawback is: not too easy to find a parking space nearby, especially on the weekends.

Google
Amazing selection of Japanese groceries, snacks, drinks, etc! The workers are very sweet and friendly. The prices are unbeatable as well! Love this place.

Google
Considering the petit size of this market it is amazing how much the owners have been able to fit in. I've found many specialized ingredients here that have been missing from the larger chains. The produce is fresh and the staff have always been sweet and very helpful. Thank you for bringing amazing local flavor to the neighborhood!

Google
Best Japanese market in DC with authentic offerings imported directly from Japan — spices, sweets, produce, fish, and more. A necessary stop for anyone on the hunt for quality ingredients for Japanese dishes!

Google
That’s gem in Washington ! Very small authentic Japanese store ! The owners and workers go far beyond your expectations to make you happy Bought lots of goodies from Japan you can’t find in regular Asian store ! Bought some sashimi fish out of this world as good as in Toyosu market in Tokyo (all are from sashimi DC) incredible quality Fresh and at a great price Best sashimi fish I ever taste in USA and I went to lot of Japanese store in USA from Houston to San Francisco

Google
Inside an 1875 corner rowhouse in Dupont Circle is Hana Japanese Market, an immigrant-owned Japanese market that sells homemade omusubi (rice balls) every day. Run by a wife-husband team, products like noodles, mochi, and curries overcrowd shelves along small aisles. It adds to the atmosphere of a beloved neighborhood market with loyal customers. And they sell cold Royal Milk Tea, my vice.

Have you ever wondered how ladies manage to fit so much into their tiny handbags? I often feel the same way about Hana Market: how do they fit so much into such a small space? Whatever their secret, I'm grateful!

Yelp
I love this shop! They have so many amazing Japanese snacks and goodies that I feel like a kid in a candy store whenever I drop by. While the space is small and packed to the brim, it's kind of what gives it even more charm for me. Whenever I drop by I'll get some onigiri and a little bit of this and that from different shelves - whatever my eyes land on that looks interesting and right up my alley as I take one quick lap to ensure I don't add to the shops congestion. So while it may be a bit limited, it's so convenient and really just filled with so many great items that it's hard not to love!

Yelp
Very cute little shop. They've got a lot of imported items and they even sell onigiri, and it's pretty good and reasonably priced. The next time I'm in the area, I actually want to stop by and explore more. I've only had the salmon Onigiri thus far. I've heard the beef is really good. The lady at the register is very nice.

Yelp
A small little market on the corner. Despite its small size it has tons of options of food from ramen, drinks, candy, etc, that you can buy. I looked around and didn't see anything special or that I haven't found at other grocery stores. I got one of there ready to eat onigiri. I opted for the salmon one which was really good. Definitely will be back to try others. Cool place to stop for a quick snack and walk around some more. It can get busy and there is only one register so be patient.
google avatar

Yelp
I loved coming here. It's an extremely small corner store, but don't be fooled it's packed with racks of Japanese goodies. It's even hard to maneuver around if you come at a busy time due to the narrow aisles. As a functional market, it has your specialty sauces and noodle variants to refrigerated produce for North Asian recipes. They have a great selection of frozen high quality fish, could even be sushi grade. I loved the colorful sweets aisle and they have ceramics and houseware available. We missed the fresh daily made onigiri but it seems though you won't have a hard time finding a yummy snack.

Yelp
Right next to Tokiya Japan, this small Japanese grocery store packs a lot of things that are hard to get. Small aisles filled with Japanese Candy, Ingredients, Sauces, Drinks, you name it this store would make you want to spend money in some way or form. Great prices too. I didn't think I'd be spending under 20 after walking out with a few items but alot of items are reasonably cheap and are definitely a bargain. I got melon bread that was really cheaper than expected, and candy that I'd thought that be a lot more. I can't say about the food but I came late ( like an hour before they closed ) and I'm sure I'd been one of the lucky ones to have experienced such delight of Onigiri if they still had any. Greatly check it out if you're in the area.

Yelp
Had to make sure they were still open since I had been out of town and saw their building was on the market. Still the same lovely service and tiny store that we have all grown to love. When I cannot get someone to drive me out to NoVa or bring things back from the west coast this has what you need. I feel better about getting food here and supporting a local business than ordering from a grocery delivery service. Make sure to check their produce and everything before you pay.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places in DC. This is a super small Japanese grocery store that also feels like a community hub for the Japanese community. There's always things posted on their bulletin board and the patrons are always interacting with each other. It might be because the space is so small though. That being said, even though it's small, I feel like I can buy most everything I need at this place, especially things I can't get at American grocery stores. Also shout-out to the onigiri that they sell fresh. The umeboshi onigiri is DIVINE.
google avatar

Asha S.

Yelp
This market is a locals favorite! If you plan on cooking an authentic Japanese meal and need to shop prior this is the only place that should be in your mind. Outside of grocery shopping I wait up to 20 mins sometimes for their fresh onigiri. My only critique is that I wish the rice has more vinegar besides that it makes me miss Hawaii and Japan when I have one of these. I wish people would stop complaining about the grocery prices. These are imported ingredients some of which are very hard to find and pay. It's DC you pay for what you get.
google avatar

Hazel P.

Yelp
One of the only asian markets nearby. I'm not sure if I'm used to being surrounded by Asian markets in California but the kewpie mayo was severely overpriced, I thought it was wrongly marked but it is $26.50.. I would come back maybe for snacks (i'm happy to find these chocolates) but not for groceries.

Yelp
I've been to this lovely store multiple times and enjoyed my grocery shopping of Japanese goods. There's no other store like this in the DMV and I highly recommend Hana Market for its charms and quality.

Yelp
Such a local gem. I love Hana Market. Along with all the amazing Japanese products you can get, they have a great small vegetable selection. They package two mini cucumbers, a few mushrooms, green onions, etc. perfect for households of one. Their frozen section is not to be missed. I have a hard time not leaving with a full basket after every trip. They are also open everyday which is so nice.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been to Hana many times, and it always feels like a little slice of Japan, in large part because of the amazing employees. They have a little bit of everything, from fresh vegetables to noodles and rice to curry mixes. I really just go for the snacks, and they have everything you could look for. My favorite is the fresh bread they get shipped in. The store is small, but that's just because they've packed it to the brim! Bring a big shopping bag and try to go when they've made fresh onigiri.

Yelp
This market is a hidden gem that I stumbled upon after returning from a dentist appointment. I love going here to grab some Japanese snacks, noodles, and desserts! The lady running the register is always super friendly. It is pretty small, so expect to move out of people's way.
google avatar

Yelp
Small yet mighty. This supermarket has the essentials for Japanese cooking with a couple other Asian condiments in there. If you're looking for rice, curry, instant noodles, or seaweed, you're in the right spot. They also have yuzu kosho which is difficult to find, but they have a nice, spicy version (love!). The market also has a small selection of fresh vegetables like green onion, mushroom, and Napa cabbage. They also have tofu and other items too to make a good stir fry or stew. The couple here are very nice and do their best to help their customers find what they need. It's very quaint, but it has what I need when I require Asian seasonings.

Yelp
Lovely Japanese market on U Street. Not too far from DuPont Circle on the Red Line or Cardozo on the Green / Yellow lines. I'm trying out the soba sauce, rice crackers, a homemade curry puff, and some curries. Highly recommend if you have some nostalgia from a recent visit to Japan or if you like regional local grocery stores.

Yelp
Hana takes you back to Japan and is ready to fulfill your grocery list. Being born in Japan and living most my life in the SF Bay Area in California where there is a very good supermarket in the suburbs or the wonderful SF Japantown and it's two Japanese grocers and many merchants and restaurant choices, it was a must to be able to source some Japanese ingredients for the kitchen, especially during Covid when we were only eating food made at home. I love this area of DC and was delighted to see Hana's sign and storefront, just like in Japan, from the corner of my eye while driving one day. Especially since locals seemed unsure if there was a dedicated Japanese market in the area and I was having trouble finding all the items I hoped for at H Mart, one of the other diverse markets and even the newly opened 99 Ranch. I ended up going home, looking Hana up on Yelp, went for my first visit and then made the trip back specifically for groceries here as often as I could. Each visit always feels like a trip back to Japan with customers from all over the globe talking about their love of the market and Japan with their friends in line. Good things come in small packages. The shop is tiny, but surprisingly extremely well stocked and efficient to shop at, and a delightful trip back to Japan even on a busy day. On busy days, you will find a line out the door and yourself shopping as you are in line rack by rack and unable to move as freely but it is worth it and adds to the adventure and experience. This tiny shop's selection is surprising!! Every time we went, and I even took my mom with me who is a discerning shopper who went to college and was a young mom in Japan, we were surprised to find every item on our shopping list and some extra bonus finds. They have every possible ingredient or item you may have in mind or might be craving that you would get from the big supermarkets! It's truly surprising and delightful to be hoping to find an obscure ingredient for making any dish you have in mind and to find everything is actually placed in categories within the tiny shop that make it easy to find despite how small the shop is. Their selection and organization beats out even some bigger markets in California! It really takes you back to the best traditional mini neighborhood markets in Japan and really makes you appreciate the extra attention to detail and what a gem this shop is in the very diverse DC area. The shopkeepers clearly are experienced, pay attention to detail, care about customers, and are incredibly kind and sweet. I was surprised from my first visit to my last before moving back to CA that my Japanese recipe lists would be complete here with all items ticked off with all the ingredients from the best brand options from sauces, to specialty produce, to many kinds of favorites like onigiri, ramen, curry, rice, udon, soba, mochi, sushi, the best of basic beauty supplies, favorite snacks and even Hayashi Chuka kits to enjoy in the summer. I will definitely be back again when I visit DC. Thank you for bringing Japan to DC and for helping me bring my favorite dishes to life when I was in the area Hana!

Yelp
It's a tiny place but had what I needed. Clean, tidy and efficient. The lady at the register was friendly. All the prepared food were gone by the I went.

Yelp
This is a very nice little market with many interesting products! Unfortunately, as some other reviewers have mentioned, the market really is very small and gets too crowded. I would much prefer it, though, if they would play soothing traditional Japanese music instead of American music. It would sound so much better with the environment. Other than that, everything else was good. The prices that I payed for the goods that I bought were exactly the same as what I saw on the price tags, which I liked. Also, the prices were fair and the people who work there seem very nice!

Jennifer B.

Yelp
This little store is packed with a great selection of products. The prices were really good and the owner was so very pleasant! I would definitely go back to shop again when I am in D.C..

Yelp
Nice Japanese market! Really yummy onigiri. Would highly recommend if you're looking for Japanese snacks in DC.

Yelp
*A love letter to Hana Japanese Market* Dear Hana, You are like sunshine on a stormy day. There's no other market in D.C. that makes my heart quite as full. You bring Japanese and other Asian ingredients to a city devoid of Asian markets. You may be small in size, but you really pack a punch and your shelves are always well stocked. I can always rely on you for different types of rice, curry, noodles, and condiments and sauces that are difficult to find in the city, including sichuan pepper oil and furikake. I appreciate the selection of sushi ingredients, and vegetables like bok choy and Chinese eggplant. I can't resist picking up snacks, tea, pastries, or onigiri before checking out. Plus, your prices are a delight. Asian Americans and anyone craving Asian food thank you wholeheartedly, especially for those of us who don't have a car. Thank you for bringing a tasty slice of Japan to the District! Love, A forever fan
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
Hana is a real find for shoppers who crave authentic Asian products in DC. The small shop is cramped with goods, but prices are reasonable for packaged goods and select green produce. It's good practice to support family-owned stores and local businesses that offer friendly and accessible service.
google avatar

Mariana C.

Yelp
Cute little store, the cashier was so nice, she helped me find two items that I couldn't locate even while they were kind of busy. Instead of just pointing to a section or telling me, she got out from behind the register to bring me over to the section and ask if that was what I was looking for. They carry a pretty good variety of foods and beverages here, and at a good price.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this cozy grocery store. I have been coming here since it opened and it never fails to disappoint. Recently, I came because I wanted to make a daikon pickle for my banh mi sandwiches (it was my first time making these). I came first thing in the morning and asked the employee what vinegar she recommended. She not only found me an excellent vinegar that tastes delicious but also shared a quick and easy recipe for pickled daikon. It tasted even better than I anticipated. Sweet, sour, and it all the right flavor notes with my sandwich. I will always keep coming here. Thanks Hana Market!

Yelp
Wandered in on a walk home one day and so happy to keep going back. I love their selection, super friendly staff, and great prices.

Yelp
A small corner market packed with Japanese snacks and foods! This little market is a go to for cheap goods (small household & beauty products too) in DC. There are labels above goods to help identify what is what for those not familiar with Japanese snacks/language. The back shelf has deeply discounted goods that haven't sold but aren't expired. This market is good for experienced and beginners. My favorites include the matcha KitKats, ramen selection & chips! There is no bathroom & $5 minimum charge for cards. You can pay to park in front of the store or find a spot on the street.
google avatar

Kristina W.

Yelp
TINY STORE. Don't expect a "market". 4 stars for the variety of goods RELATIVE to the size. This itty bitty store is packed with stuff. The inside is arranged like an "O". Shelves & freezers one the side walls surrounding the middle open shelves that are packed with stuff. There's no passage for you to cut the line to either sides of the store. Once you're in, you can only go one direction around the store to the cashier then out. Grab what you like as you walk around the store. There's really not enough room for you to go back & forth. A good place to get some yummy Japanese food to warm up at your hotel w/o paying restaurant prices, but you are likely to find all this stuff at your local (& much bigger) Asian markets.
google avatar

Pauline L.

Yelp
A tiny hole in the wall grocery in the city! They've got a ton of selections for Japanese groceries with amazing prices. Support your local grocery and pop in! I swung by for the rice balls so I had a healthy snack while flying back out of DC. They were easy to transport and refreshing.
google avatar

Bailey B.

Yelp
Gosh I love this place. Not only can you find amazing international delicacies, or stock up on the best ingredients for Ramen, but the shop owners are sweeter than pie. They'll help you find anything you need, and we're so forward thinking as to label items that don't have a lick of English on them. Can't wait to go back
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
Walked over here after brunch because I heard they had onigiri here. There was a bunch but I only bought 4 but loved each one of them. The store had a huge stock of snacks, sweets, and a lot of other Japanese items that you can't find everywhere! I am definitely looking to come back next time I'm heading home because their frozen/fridge section has a bunch of stuff I need.
google avatar

V L.

Yelp
I've been here three? times in the last 10 days and I continue to be surprised by all the items I find. From scallions, ginger, and lime to varieties of shrimp chips, packaged and frozen udon, and dumplings, this little store packs a lot. They carry many varieties of condiments (mirin, rice vinegar, soy sauce, kewpie mayonnaise, etc.), different flavors of Pocky, Hello Panda, curry, and ramen, fruit snacks, Kit Kats, mochi, and snacks, and multiple brands of rice and seaweed. On top of that, almost everyday for the last few months (maybe longer), they have partnered with Uzu9dc who drops off about 10-15 meals initially. You can follow Uzu's IG to see what's on the menu for the day and get updates if they run out and plan to restock. I have enjoyed the karaage bento and it is a wonderfully fulfilling and delicious bowl of chicken karaage, grilled vegetables (peppers, eggplant, onions, brussel sprouts), pickled vegetables, and white rice. I have found my beloved milk tea supply and enjoyed caramel corn snacks. I've also enjoyed my beloved swiss green tea cakes although they do carry vanilla and chocolate flavors as well. A few hours after they open, they are supplied with onigiri (true except for Wednesdays) and I think on Thursday afternoons they receive bakery items, which according to one cashier is usually available until Friday because they sell out that fast!
google avatar

Yelp
Small shop, I like that they have fresh herbs and spices that are hard to find at regular American grocery stores. My go to place when I need sushi grade fish, Thai basil, southeast Asian sauces.

Yelp
I've loved Hana Japanese Market for years. If you're looking for sweet treats or seaweed snacks or ramen, this is the place to go. My Favorites My favorite spot to pick up some fresh hand rolls, seaweed snacks and other treats. I also love lychee and matcha, so I count on them for canned lychee and lychee candy and fresh matcha powder. They also have a variety of frozen and refrigerated foods, like steamed pork and veggie buns and ume plums. Many items are labeled in English, fresh and I also find the prices to be very reasonable. Pandemic Safety Measures During the pandemic, I've been very impressed with the safety measures they've taken. They limit how many people can go in and there's usually someone outside to wait to let you in after someone has left. They require masks for people going in. They also have plexiglass at the counter. And it always seems very clean and well-stocked. Service I've always found the owners and staff to be very friendly and helpful. I don't speak Japanese so it can be confusing if you can't read everything on a label or if you're looking for something. I also love that they have someone greeting you at the door during the pandemic and holding traffic to make sure that there aren't too many people inside at once. Final verdict- love this neighborhood gem! Kind of hope that it stays a secret so I can keep coming here without a long line. But I guess it's the price of greatness!
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
I love this little Japanese market! It's like stepping into Japan - a country with mind-blowing food and a beautiful culture. The people that work there are hard working, helpful and friendly and the prices are very reasonable for imported specialty goods. Even though it's a small store, they have a great variety of wonderful Japanese foods. I usually try something new every time I go there and I'm always pleasantly surprised, if not blown away by the how good it is. Among my favorite items are 1) natto (very healthy but an acquired taste); 2) Daifuku Red Bean Cakes (trust me, you gotta try one); 3) pickled plums (delicious to make tea with); and 4) homemade onigiri (amazing). They also have several organic options for various foods such as miso and natto. I love this little place and I hope they stay in business forever! It's a Godsend!
google avatar

Yelp
Great little market stocked full with authentic Japanese treats! I received a sushi rice maker for Christmas and wanted to make some sushi rolls at home. I searched for the best place to find quality ingredients and I found Hana market. The store is small, but has an incredible amount of inventory. This time I was on a specific mission for rice, vinegar, and seaweed, but next time I am looking forward to taking the time to look at everything they have. The staff is very nice and helpful. Majority of the items have English labels on the shelves to help guide you.
google avatar

Hank T.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Having moved away from Tokyo years ago I've been search for a little bit of Japan and this is it. Staff is amazingly nice and the products are straight from Japan. I bought the onigiri as they came in the door, 12:30 pm, and they were fresh and delicious. Favorite was absolutely the beef that was a bulgogi type of beef. Washed down with the Vitamin B drink, pictured, and I was back to my middle school in Japan. I will absolutely be visiting this place at least once a month to get my Japan fill.
google avatar

Stacy D.

Yelp
A cute little shop selling Japanese snacks and grocery. I found that the price of rice cracker snacks here are much cheaper than the bigger Asian grocery stores in the DC area. A 3oz package of Shirakiko arare seaweed wrapped crackers is only $1.5 here but at the other stores at least $2.5, and ordering online on Amazon would be $4 a pack. Also found my favorite cucumber pickles, wakame for miso soup, and some fresh mochis.
google avatar

Yelp
Very authentic items offered and very friendly staff! Its pretty small and can get crowded easily but theres fast service.

Yelp
The fresh onigiri are a must, the salmon and beef are my favorites. They come in at 1 so make sure to get there because they will sell out. Also so many great snack options
google avatar

Yelp
This charming Asian market is a must visit. My 11yr old daughter found this Korean recipe that she wanted to make for our family so we needed a few ingredients that could not be found at the Trader Joe's, so we stumbled into this little gem. They had authentic items, and friendly service. I didn't mind at all that the space was very tight because I wasn't in there to stroll around, I had a list. as an added plus they have fresh rice balls that were delicious.
google avatar

Keli F.

Yelp
The cutest shop with the sweetest owners. Hana Japanese Market has a huge variety of not only Japanese products but other Asian cooking items too - I picked up a super affordable pack of rice paper for spring rolls. They also have a ton of fresh mochi in their refrigerated section. おおきに!

Yelp
This is a great Japanese grocery and food store. It has everything you can imagine from snacks and drinks to fresh vegetables and homemade onigiri. Love this place! これは日本の素晴らしい食料品店です。 軽食や飲み物から新鮮な野菜や自家製のおにぎりまで、あらゆるものがあります。 この店が大好き!

Yelp
I've been shopping here for years with my brothers and friends and I love this place! They have everything that I've been looking for especially for groceries that other stuff international stores don't have. They have fresh onigiri (rice balls) that are amazing! Highly recommend if you guys want something different or if you're interested in Japanese culture.

Yelp
Not easy for this tiny store to stay open throughout this pandemic but so glad it has. Space is very tight so need to be very careful about distancing - weekends you'll likely see a line of people waiting to go in so best to go off peak hours. There's so little room to move around so the fewer customers you encounter inside the better. But if you like Japanese foods and snacks this is just about the best stocked store in DC - not even the larger Asian supermarkets can compete with the variety (and surprisingly price is very competitive too). It's pretty amazing how they manage to pack all that stuff in a space not much bigger than the size of a standard living room. My favorite items to get here are the Japanese rice crackers - great selections and most of them are made in Japan - more preferable to the ones made in Thailand (which tend to be slightly cheaper and more easily found in the larger Asian supermarkets).
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
I love this place! The staff is friendly, extremely knowledgeable, hard working, and bilingual. They have so many wonder and unique items for sale here at affordable prices.

Yelp
Sooooo glad I finally checked this place out!! Small market packed with tons of items and a variety of brands/flavors for snacks, noodles, sauces, etc. I was so incredibly impressed by the selection and their prices! I also tried one of their rice balls (onigiri) hoping it would be a secret yummy gem hidden here...but no luck. It was good but the salmon and seaweed flavor left a funky aftertaste in my mouth. Overall, a great spot to grab beloved Japanese goods. I even picked up a few snacks and ramen packs to make a gift basket for my friend. The line can get a little long since there's only one register and a reaaaally slow credit card machine. Also it's a tight space so be prepared to squeeze around other shoppers! Although I personally think the coziness of this market is what makes it truly awesome.

Sebastian g.

Yelp
I think this place has a lot to offer, but I want to write about my negative recent experience in hopes they improve. I purchased some sashimi-grade fish from them recently, but they gave me the worst cuts of the fish, probably thinking I would not notice given that I am white. The salmon cut had about 1/4 of it mushy and discolored (tasted terrible) and had to be thrown away. Also, when they packaged the salmon they left a large piece of skin on the bottom (where i could not see) that also had to be thrown out. The 'good' part of the piece they cut for me was also not good at all, with very little fat content (the white stuff), making it taste dull. This is unfortunate because they charge $40/lb for the salmon, which is much higher than H Mart ($25/lb). I also got a cut of sashimi grade red snapper, which also was disappointing. Instead of giving me the chunky part of the fish, they gave me the thin sides, which is not
