Pete’s New Haven Style Apizza Closes Its Clarendon Location | Eater DC

"Shuttered over the weekend, the eight-year-old Clarendon outpost at 3024 Wilson Boulevard is the latest casualty in Pete’s recent contraction: the local pizzeria that has been serving New Haven-style pies in D.C. for a decade has gone from four restaurants to just one, and an employee confirmed the closure but did not provide a reason." - Tierney Plumb

Google
I stopped by recently to grab a bite and decided to try the beef udon noodles. I am really glad I did because the food was honestly fantastic. The broth had a rich flavor that tasted very authentic, and the noodles were cooked perfectly. It is rare to find a place that hits the mark on quality like this. The staff was also great. They were genuinely friendly and welcoming from the moment I walked in. It was a really pleasant experience overall, and I will definitely be coming back here again for another bowl soon

Google
Ramen is by far my favorite Japanese restaurant. It’s a small place, but very warm and cozy—you can really feel how much care the owner puts into running it. The décor is filled with authentic Japanese touches, and the atmosphere makes you feel like you’re eating at home with family. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, which makes the whole experience even better. The food is excellent with so many choices. Their signature dishes are the different varieties of ramen, which are always delicious. But my personal favorite is their Saba Miso Bento Box—I highly recommend trying it if you visit. Besides bento, they also serve great appetizers, udon, rice bowl, curry, and other traditional Japanese dishes. And don’t skip dessert! They have wonderful Japanese sweets like dorayaki, taiyaki, matcha cheesecake. What I love most is the consistency. I’ve been coming here for almost three years, usually once or twice a month, and every meal has been just as tasty as the last. Never once have I been disappointed. If you’re looking for authentic, comforting Japanese food with a warm atmosphere, this is the spot. Highly recommend!

Google
Food: Portion sizes are good, taste is average, and plating is decent. Staff: Unfortunately, the service was a letdown. I felt subtly pressured to tip, which made me uncomfortable as a solo diner. Despite the restaurant being at a low-footfall time, I was initially asked to sit in a corner seat that I didn’t prefer. Although I was later moved to a window seat, the overall interaction left a poor impression and took away from the experience. Ambience: Cozy space by a busy street Overall: I wouldn’t visit again due to the service experience and the limited vegetarian and vegan options. The menu feels restrictive enough that repeat visits would mean ordering the same dish each time. Recommendation: Would not recommend.

Google
One of the best ramen in town. The place feels you in Japanese atmosphere and culture. Servers are really friendly and kind. There are variety of local food options but ramens and taiyaki which is Japanese cake dessert are fabulous.

Google
Been here a few times while visiting the area, its always a great time. The tonkosu is delicious, perfectly rich and the texture of the noodles is just right. I really like the spicy miso addition. It compliments the tonkosu well. I'll be sure to stop in next time I'm back in town.

Google
One of my favorite restaurants in the Clarendon area. You can’t go wrong ordering one their bento boxes - I prefer the Pork Katsu or the Chicken Karaage. Both are delicious. And their hot green tea has a deep, comforting flavor. Try it!

A. F.

Google
Hanabi is one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants in the area. I’ve visited several times, and the food has consistently been amazing. The wings in the photo are soy garlic flavor and perfectly fried—so good that I took a bite before remembering to take the picture. Highly recommend!

Google
Sooooo yummy can’t wait to try more things on the menu. The food was so savory and delicious. The staff were super nice too!

Yelp
We stumbled across Hanabi Ramen on accident and it totally made our day! Warm, unpretentious atmosphere, polite service, and delicious food. I'm from LA and have missed casual but well-prepared Japanese food in the DMV area. This brought me back! We got the tonkatsu and beef udon - two classics elevated by complex flavor profiles. Thank you, Hanabi!

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in nova. I'm not a big ramen person (although their ramens are still great), what I always come back for are their bento dishes. The bentos are such a good comfort food, almost a home cooked feeling, and my favorites are the teriyaki salmon and saba miso. I also would highly recommend the karaage, as an appetizer or as an entree, I've gotten it many times and it always comes out piping hot, perfectly cooked, and so crispy. We most recently ordered the tonkotsu charsu ramen which had a very flavorful broth, and we were surprised at the amount of meat that came with it! Most of the entrees are a hit except for the tsukemen- I think the sauce doesn't really cling to the noodles so it lacked some flavor for me. The only thing to note is the resturaunt can get very busy on weekend nights. The space is small so the seating can be tight but to be honest I feel like that adds to the charm of the place! As much as I'd like to gatekeep this place, if you are in the Clarendon area I would 100% recommend this spot!

Yelp
Not ashamed to say I get ramen from Hanabi at least once a month. One rain drop or cloud in the sky and I'm calling in a pickup order LOL. Why? Because Hanabi is the ultimate comfort ramen. Their Spicy Miso Ramen is hands down my favorite in the DMV: perfect amount of spice, rich flavor, and loaded with just the right mix of noodles, broth, and toppings. YUM YUM YUM. Bonus points for packaging. The broth and noodles are kept separate so nothing gets soggy. You can enjoy it from the couch without sacrificing any quality. My order hits every time, and my boyfriend swears by the Tan Tan Men. Service is always fast and friendly, the space is small but cozy, and it really feels like one of those hidden gems you'd stumble into in a side street of Tokyo. The vibes are peaceful, the details in the décor are thoughtful, and everything feels authentic from the warm greetings to the rich, satisfying broth. Simply put: Hanabi gets it right every time. If you're anywhere near Clarendon, make this your go to ramen spot. It's easily one of the best in the DMV.

Yelp
This was my first time in Hanabi Ramen. We were in the search of ramen near by and this location popped up. My husband had the Spciy Miso Ramen but instead of pork he had it with chicken. I had the Tan Tan Men with chicken as well for the up-charge. The environment was nice and peaceful even the music was pleasant. The wait time was nine when we came in we got seated right away and serviced right away. I love details in the places that I eat and dine in and this was truly nice for the visual experience too many things to talk about and the display came in touch with the spot 10/10 will look forward to coming again!! :)

Yelp
This was my first place coming here and by me it was the most delicious Japanese place for me to go to here in Arlington so far. The ambiance was nice, the service was attentive and the food, when I say I cleared my plate I literally cleared my plate! The salmon teriyaki was a nice balance of a nice soft glaze of teriyaki sauce, and the salmon was well cooked! Everything was superb and I will definitely be coming back again! Thank you again to the kitchen and servers today!

Yelp
Simply give this place a try. It's some of the best Ramen I've had all year, and I've tried a lot of places. It's small so large groups can make it difficult. Try to have your whole party there to sit makes it easier. They were attentive, the orders came out fresh and quick. It reminds you of one of these small shops. not to fancy but delivers big on flavor. The broth was fantastic in my opinion, the noodles perfect! The slurp factor was high. The ingredients just brought it all together and the serving was perfect and i was satisfied 100%. If I lived closer, I'd visit a lot more often but coming from Montgomery County it's a little difficult. I think you would enjoy the ramen here.

Yelp
There's always a line at Hanabi, and for good reason. I've had their shrimp udon 3 times in the last 3 weeks. Their specialty is tonkotsu ramen from the Fukuoka region of Japan, which I've enjoyed as well. Their chicken karaage is also delicious and a great appetizer to share. Once you get a seat, food comes quickly and the servers are very friendly. As a result, tables move pretty quickly. There's a bench outside for folks who are waiting as well as a few chairs in the entrance. Recently, I got there around 5:30 and didn't have to wait, but it started to really get busy around 6 pm.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this Ramen spot for sometime. It just so happens that a rainy Sunday was the perfect excuse to go out. What I appreciate is the staff really emphasize this is authentic Ramen; made by a chef who came directly from Japan, wanting to share his craft. The moment you enter, you are greeted with warm smiles and helpful staff who will do everything possible to make your experience as authentic to what you would experience in Japan. The vegetarian Ramen was very flavorful, a good balance of the salty and spicy broth. The noodles were chewy and had a springy texture to them. The vegetarian dumplings were very interesting. They were not made with any tofu or mince vegetables- rather the main filling was chickpeas! An interesting take, though personally, not for me as I found them to be a little starchy. My dad enjoyed the Chicken Karaage and the spicy sauce that came with it. It was the perfect accompaniment with an ice cold beer. But don't just wait for a rainy day to go, definitely give this place a try for yourself. It's a huge favorite among the locals in that area.

Yelp
The food here is fantastic and the service is lovely. I've been here with my friends over 4 times and have tried everything from ramen, to udon, and the bento boxes as well. It is a smaller restaurant so if you come here with more than 5-6 people, I would call ahead! I feel like it's become a staple place for me whenever I'm in Claredon and want something thats homey and comforting!
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
This is the best ramen I've had for a while. I ordered the tan tan ramen and it gave that amazing warm belly feeling you crave ramen for. The egg - tastey, gooey perfection. The broth - filled with flavor. Group pork just melted in your mouth. Even delivered it was delicious.
google avatar

Linnea E.

Yelp
Stopped in on a cold, rainy day and a hot bowl of udon was just what I needed! I also appreciated being able to sit at the counter as a solo diner. The service was crazy fast and the broth and noodles were perfect. The shrimp tempura were also spot on though I'd probably order them as a side next time so I get more and they don't soggy. Bit pricier than I realized it was going to be, but totally worth it for the quality.
google avatar

Yelp
We got here around 7:20 because we thought they closed at 9, but actually they took last orders at 7:45. They graciously seated us. The karage chicken was SO juicy and they used dark meat which made it extra delicious. The tsukemen was ok. The broth wasn't as thick as tsukemen broths I've had in the past and it seemed like more of a regular ramen but still yummy. Curry was delicious and a generous portion of the meat. Great place, next to kungfu bubble tea if you want dessert after.
google avatar

Jocelyn G.

Yelp
Came here on a cool fall day and it hit the spot. I got the tan tan men ramen and it had a rich broth flavor that wasn't too salty. The bowls were huge and can definitely be 2 meals for one person.
google avatar

Robbie O.

Yelp
Ordered delivery and it was fantastic. The spicy ramen was nearly the best I've ever had. Great portion size as well.
google avatar

Sharmane G.

Yelp
This place was super busy upon arriving and they had a lot on the waitlist already, which I see as a good thing. The space is quite intimate and you may literally bump elbows. The food service was so quick and efficient. The food itself was tasty! Got the Tonkatsu Ramen which was so rich and full of flavor but not overly salty or fatty, which can be so hard to find. Wontons were good and a nice add-on. The chicken karrage is so crispy and tasty Seafood Mix fried selection was very good and fresh. Miso salmon was a delicious healthy serving Unagi Donburi was also tasty Would love to return and try something new!
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from Hanabi on a cold evening and it really hit the spot! We ordered the spicy miso ramen, tonkatsu chasu, and the gyoza appetizer. Everything had great flavor, the noodles and broth are kept separate so the noodles weren't mushy when it arrived. The spicy miso wasn't terribly spicy and had a great flavor. I love gyoza and was pleasantly surprised with them. My boyfriend enjoyed the tonkatsu chasu. I can't speak to the restaurant or service since we had delivery, but the food was great and I'd definitely order again!
google avatar

Lily B.

Yelp
There is a reason why locals keep this restaurant busy. I have found it to always have consistent high quality. It is a reliable spot for some of the areas best ramen. It's a little hole in the wall in the tables fill up very fast, so I normally use DoorDash. If you're a ramen fan you owe it to yourself to come by.
google avatar

Matt N.

Yelp
Always order and Love the Tan Tan ramen but today I have to try something different. Trying out the Curry Pork Katsu Udon
google avatar

Thomas H.

Yelp
Another subpar ramen place in the dmv. A friend recommended this place and the reviews were good. Actual ramen was bland, a person in our party tried the beef udon and it was lacklustre. In my opinion, only two decent ramen places in the DMV and both are in DC.
google avatar

Saki R.

Yelp
This is hands down my favorite ramen spot in the area! I highly recommend the tonkotsu ramen--the broth is incredibly rich, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. Don't miss out on their gyoza either. They serve an outstanding "hanetsuki gyoza", which comes with a perfectly crispy lattice that adds a delicious crunch. The service is quick, efficient, and friendly. I'll definitely be coming back again!
google avatar

Maria Gracias H.

Yelp
Another top-notch ramen establishment in Northern VA! What makes their ramen's apart apart is perfectly al dente straight thin noodles swimming in a super thick pork broth, and super tender charsiu, with the Tonkatsu being a standout and the spicy and garlicky Tan Tan Men being an otherworldly experience!
google avatar

Jamie J.

Yelp
Great ramen. They're very upfront about allergies which I have so I very much appreciated. Quite a lot of options as well and great service. It does get very busy so I would recommend going during off hours.
google avatar

Lester W.

Yelp
Delicious! Ordered various ramens and everything is to perfection. The service is efficient and they have a wide menu of options. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Elle M.

Yelp
The service here is atrocious when it's busy. We come in with two people in front of us. The two people who walk in before us get seated immediately. We have to wait because the place is full. But instead of telling us to write our name down, this lady looks at us and says "Two" which is a sign she will seat us next. We sit and wait. More people come in... big party. They get seated, which is fine, maybe we are getting a smaller table. Another 10 minutes go by. More people get seated. More people come in and she tells them to write their name down. We are starting to suspect that we got skipped so we get up to write our name down. She sees that we wrote our name down and doesn't seem to care we got skipped multiple times. This type of messy system irritates me that I chose to leave and eat somewhere else. Hanabi, please train your staff, to tell every single guest to write their name down. Don't think you're so sharp that you can remember everyone because apparently you did not remember me. Never coming back here when it's busy!!!!
google avatar

Steven D.

Yelp
This place is truly worthy of the name "Fireworks Ramen". They greet you with the signature irasshaimase when you come in and you'll feel welcomed! The owner Kenji-san worked on the final fantasy games and it was his childhood dream to open this place! Awesome story dude!!! Waitresses work hard and deliver exceptional service. I'm happy to have stopped by and see why they're a mainstay noodle shop in Clarendon. Ramen is flavorful, the fried appetizers/shareables are crispy, and overall amazing. Would recommend!

Terry J.

Yelp
Great Ramen restaurant in walkable Clarendon. Love their tonkatsu ramen, curry udon and Japanese curry with katsu
google avatar

Christopher K.

Yelp
Wonton ramen is simply delicious. Service is friendly. Seating can be a little tight so I go when there is less of a crowd.
google avatar

Yelp
This ramen spot was recommended by a local Japanese living in DMV so I had to try it. I cannot say with 100% certainty but it appears to be run by Japanese people. The place is tiny and it reminds me of Ramen shops in Tokyo. Even the staff resembles Japan in a way. They want you to leave when you're done eating. It sounds rude in the US to make your customers leave but to be honest, I didn't mind it. That's how busy ramen shops are run in Japan. The table next to us didn't order any ramen but drinks for some time so the staff nicely asked to make space for customers in line. They were probably pissed not knowing this is how ramen shops are run. As I've said, the place is small but it's also cozy, packed, and very lively during dinner time. The taste of the ramen is very close to Japan but not quite there completely. 8/10 close. The texture of the ramen is excellent unlike Jinya or other ramen spots in the area. The first sip of the broth and the tight cozy, busy spot will almost make you feel like you're back in Japan for a second. I'm however missing the pickled leaves that are usually served at ramen shops. Will I come back again? Arlington is a bit of a drive for me. If I were in the area, I'd be back quite often!
google avatar

Alice J.

Yelp
Food was ready fast (we ordered on DoorDash for self pick up). Attractive ambiance, service with a smile. Delicious Chicken Katsu Curry (over noodles). And I love their tonkatsu ramen (you can choose the type of noodle; I chose udon) which comes with a "lava" egg
google avatar

Stedmond P.

Yelp
I randomly dropped in on a cold day for some hot ramen. The food came out so fast! I ordered the Hanabi wings and Tan Tan Men ramen. The wings were savory and sticky; the ramen was mildly spicy. I wasn't a huge fan of the Tan Tan Men so I'll give the Shoyu a try next time. The service was amazing. Very tentative, patient and kind. My water never went empty and and they team was on top of all my needs.
google avatar

Scott W.

Yelp
Overall a decent place; however, there are challenges with getting in. Parking is limited to paid street parking, and there's not a lot of it. Also, seating is hit or miss. When we went we had to wait about 20 minutes. The servers are friendly enough. The setting is very casual, with a slightly unique floor layout but that shouldn't be an issue. To eat we started of with shishito peppers, which were ok but I think lacked flavor. My wife had seaweed salad. And chicken karaage, which was probably the star of the evening. It was moist, tender, and had a great outside crunch. For my meal I had tantanmen ramen, and it was decent, but I feel there are better ramen options out there. My son had the chicken katsu curry with udon noodles (did not work and lacked flavor), while my wife had the beef udon. The meat was tender, and decent broth. If I go back it will be for the chicken karaage.
google avatar

Allison N.

Yelp
Really nice ramen spot! They have a pretty big menu and a lot of variety, so this feels like somewhere where everyone could find something they'd enjoy. We had to wait a little bit because we came in on a Saturday, but the line went fast. Service was really quick and efficient and friendly too. The ramen was cozy and filling and we would definitely go back!
google avatar

Maria K.

Yelp
Great place for ramen in Arlington. Loved the tonkotsu ramen, I even added on tantan meat for extra spice and flavor. Takoyaki was fresh and delicious as well. Service is always great and attentive. The restaurant itself is a little small, so during busy times you may have to wait for a bit.
google avatar

Wayne H.

Yelp
So I know that ordering ramen using a delivery service is a mortal sin. We all know the broth arrives lukewarm and the noodles get stuck into one large mass. The same was certainly true of Hanabi, but I think that's unfortunately going to be a pretty universal experience, regardless of the shop. Some things just don't transport well and ramen/pho/etc are just part of that category. It suddenly turned cold and rainy this week and I decided nothing would comfort my cold, damp soul like a nice bowl of tsukemen (dipping ramen). The broth was so packed with flavor - smoky katsuobushi, rich pork, and tons of umami. It clung on well to the noodles and the accompaniments were great, especially the egg. The chashu pork was a bit dry, but letting it hang out in the dipping broth was a great way to rehydrate it. I can only imagine this would've many times more pleasurable had I eaten it in the restaurant, but even still, it was just what the doctor ordered.
google avatar

Cole D.

Yelp
Just ok. My friends' ramens were not as good as mine. The beef udon was incredibly flavorful. Great noodles and broth. Everything was pretty average and not super cheap. Nice service. Took a while to seat us, close to closing time.
google avatar

Brandon C.

Yelp
Great Ramen place, probably my #2 spot for ramen in the DMV. Noodles are great, reminds me of japan, broth is nice and creamy, not too salty and the flavor is spot on. The restaurant has some decor going around that kinda just screams asian lol but better than nothing The service is normal, nothing amazing but nothing bad really. I think location of this place and food make it a go to. Next to a metro stop so its super easy to get to for a lot of people.
google avatar

Mru B.

Yelp
Went about 40 minutes before closing and we were seated immediately and given menus and water. They have very kind and efficient staff and they checked up on us and let us know when It was last call for the kitchen in case we wanted to order anything else. I ordered the Tonkotsu ramen which looked simple but was very flavorful (and they have chili garlic on the side which I added plenty of). The person I went with ordered a Spicy Miso Ramen with pork (both ramens came with a runny yolk egg!) and said It had a unique flavor. Definitely a great spot to go to in Clarendon!
google avatar

D W.

Yelp
Haiku review: Ordered the Champon With extra noodles--tasty and big serving size. Service was friendly, Recommend this ramen place, Would come back again.
google avatar

Brigette K.

Yelp
Ordered this as delivery. After one and a half hours there was no food and no update. Luckily I was able to get my money refunded but this was a terrible experience. I would not trust them to get you your food in time.
google avatar

Laila I.

Yelp
Delicious & underrated- I've been keeping this place a secret since high school - their chicken ramen is so good and is very consistent. Good vibes- wish it was bigger but it adds to the comfy feel- service is always great as well! Love this place!
google avatar

Phoebe D.

Yelp
Good place to satisfy a ramen craving! We went on a weekend for lunch and it was very packed - thankfully we didn't have to wait long but it definitely is a popular place. We tried the tsukemen and chicken karaage donburi. The tsukemen was just ok - I was expecting a slightly thicker and saltier broth to really coat the noodles when dipped, but the broth just tasted like a regular ramen broth only with a pork and fish base instead of just pork. I felt like the noodles still tasted kind of bland when just dipped so I ended up eating it more like ramen. I think the texture of the noodles was not very good either. However, the portion is huge and the chashu is nice and tender, and the broth was tasty even if it didn't taste like what I expected, so I'm sure the regular ramen is good! I also really liked the karaage donburi - the chicken was super crispy yet juicy and moist and paired well with the sauce. Definitely would go for that over the tsukemen!
google avatar

Alisa L.

Yelp
Is this the best ramen you'll have in your life? No. Is it the best ramen in Nova? Also no (try Hokkaido Ramen Santouka in Tysons for that). Is it a solid bowl of ramen that'll hit the spot on a cold night? Absolutely. We got the takoyaki, tonkatsu and miso ramen. The takoyaki was very likely frozen store bought takoyaki--i.e. completely edible but nothing amazing. The tonkatsu was good, but it didn't have that insanely deep, porky, and rich flavor a really good bowl of tonkatsu has. The miso was not great--the flavor was thin and it was kinda sweet. However, the chashu and egg were perfectly cooked (i.e. the chashu was fall apart in your mouth tender and the egg was soft-boiled to perfection). The price was incredibly reasonable, especially for Arlington. The service was also quick, efficient, and polite. All in all, a solid neighborhood ramen joint.
google avatar

Imelda O.

Yelp
I love coming here every time I'm in town. The spicy miso is so good and just the right amount of spiciness. You will likely have to wait to be seated but it moves quickly and service is fast. The place is small but cozy, get ready to be seating very close to the table next to you because space is limited. Enjoy!
google avatar

Erika O.

Yelp
We came on a Friday night and were immediately seated. We both ordered the karaage bento and it came out really quick. The meat was super juicy and crispy on the outside. Loved the sides it came with as well as the spicy mayo. Service was great! It's a tiny restaurant so we were really close to the people next to us. Definitely a good spot for Japanese
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Food is very very good and authentic Japanese! However be ware of long line given small store, but the line is well worth it! The waitress that served us was a Japanese woman who is very deligent and attentive to our needs. I'd say this place is a hidden gem perfect for one on one dates but less so for big groups.
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
Hanabi ramen is a newer place in the DMV area. I was excited to try it and it's definitely one of the better ramen places in the DMV - but it's nothing amazing. If you've spent time in places with more Japanese than DC has (which is not a high bar), I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you are in the area and really craving ramen. The soup flavor was simple - it wasn't as thick as I expected from the usual ramen dishes - and a bit on the salty side (but not too terrible). The lack of thickness to the broth really did surprise me and reduced my enjoyment of the ramen. The fish cake did also taste slightly rubber-y and without the usual strong flavor that I've had. The noodles were well cooked and the perfect texture though. It's a small ramen shop and the seating is packed together (as you would expect from a ramen shop). The food comes out very fast so you don't have to do a lot of waiting and the serving size is large so it is a good deal.
google avatar

Benjamin T.

Yelp
Kenji-san brings authenticity to Clarendon's noodle scene. I've been a frequent diner for the past several years and regret that I don't go as often as I used to. The staff such as Satomi-san are extremely polite and have never had one bad experience here. My go to order is always a Tan Tan Men Spicy Pork Ramen. Broth is extremely flavorful and I love my Calpico Soda to enjoy alongside it. Wagamama will NOT put this place out of business!!! Visit this place and experience the small, cozy and welcoming place that is Hanabi Ramen!!! Easily accessible by Clarendon Metro!
google avatar

Serena X.

Yelp
Fairly standard ramen place - came here for lunch and it was surprisingly busy, but we had great attentive service. I got the Tan Tan Men and it was a great portion size and quite flavorful! Would probably come back if I was passing by in the area, but wouldn't make a special trip out.
google avatar

Trinh T.

Yelp
The food was delicious, savory and yummy. The service was good not anything special. The place was modern not special either.
