Hanar’s aesthetic falls somewhere between Amsterdam boudoir and Dorset farmhouse—there’s red lighting, exposed beams, foliage, and a general aura of incense. It’s a pleasingly IYKYK-feeling Kurdish spot hidden in one of the arches by Peckham Rye, where groups kick back and devour herbaceous falafel and crunchy kubba, while couples share still-warm flatbread and the expert pistachio hummus. Because Hanar is a casual Kurdish restaurant packed out with charming trinkets, stem vases full of daisies, and other things we will humbly accept as gifts from people we’re freely giving our Friday night to. Like Yada’s around the corner, it feels pleasingly unpretentious. Nobody cares about the plastic school chairs they’re sitting on when the warm flatbread and the pistachio hummus are this satisfying. Herbaceous falafels are halved, crunchy spinach kubba is attacked between two, and house wine is knocked back like there’s no tomorrow. There's still plenty of freshness and crunch involved, thanks to a cucumber and tomato salad and the occasional explosion of pomegranate.
