The Best Restaurants in Port Townsend, Washington - Eater Seattle

"The name says “noodle,” but Hanazono is Port Townsend’s go-to spot for a range of Japanese cuisine — along with soba, udon, and ramen, they serve sushi rolls, donburi bowls, and classic appetizers, such as curry buns. The dining room — a gussied up diner with towering front windows — is currently closed due to a staffing shortage, but takeout business remains brisk." - Matthew Lombardi

Google
Absolutely a must when in Port Townsend. Restaurant is pretty small, and the food won't be fast, but holy cow it will be amazing. We got a California roll and Yakisoba with Tofu and it blew me away, it tasted so fresh and presentation was beautiful. Great selection of Sake and a few beers/sodas, plus a ton of tea.

Google
Wait staff was unprofessional and untrained. The food took a long time and when it came out all the appetizers and mains came out at once. The sushi was tasty but the size of hockey pucks. Many of the items were out of stock. It’s only busy because of limited options, otherwise the experience does not match the price. Over stimulatingly loud.. wait staff was rude and unengaged

Google
Wonderful meals true to the best and truest definition of the dish. You will appreciate the fresh noodles and well-balanced and flavorful sauces. The atmosphere is upbeat bistro-style in a close format. The owner and staff are very friendly.

Google
This restaurant is amazing. I have had nearly everything on the menu and it is all great. The Agadashi tofu, Nabeyaki Udon, PT roll, and any broiled fish special are great places to start. I’ve been coming here for more than 10 years and the consistency and quality of the food are unmatched. A recent takeout sushi dinner while camping at fort worden was one of the best meals I’ve had all year.

Google
This place is super busy, we arrived at 5:20 seated and ordered at 5:40. Go finally got served part of our meal at 6:15. The rest came at 6:35 . Long wait in a small restaurant. Waiting list ,you sign in at the door. They cook one meal at a time... literally. That’s good but really scattered serving. One family of 7 waited two hours for their last person to get dinner order served. Anyway the food is pretty good and pleasant servers. My bill. For a family of four totaled $70.00 ! That’s great bargain with four full meals. Good sushi and noodles. Located next the the famous Rose movie Theatre .

My fiance and I stopped by to eat dinner here during our Vancouver road trip. My fiance ordered Teriyaki Chicken Donburi and I ordered Champon- Best Asian noodles I've ever had! I highly recommend this place. What a great way to celebrate my birthday!

Google
Any wait you have to eat at Hanazona is more than worth it-even if it's cold outside! Our grandson has been here several times and wanted to eat their. We waited and when we got in, we all had a delicious meal. All different dishes but tasty and beautiful presentations made up for our wait. Staff is great.

Yelp
By now I must have multiple duplicate photos of this place. We like it so much, we keep coming back. This time I decided to try their Donburi instead of ramen. It is market price for $22 and it is totally worth it. The only thing I wish is more rice. We also love the Green tea tiramisu. It was good size for two people and love the bitterness of the matcha and plum sake. Yum! The hybrid service works great. The young lady was given us our three course meal and timed just right. We love this little cozy shop.

Yelp
We absolutely love this place. The seating is small so get there early if you have 4 plus people. Our group ordered just about the menu. So we all tried a little of everything and it was well worth it. The food and staff were amazing. Planning a trip back real soon.

Yelp
It said yellow tail on the menu for the donburi bowl, but that wasn't yellow tail. It was ? tasteless tuna. Otherwise enjoyed the place.

Kelly M.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! Lots of variety and amazing food! Been coming here for 18 years!!!! Delicious sushi, awesome Tom yum, all around great everytime!!!
google avatar

Yelp
The real thing when you want Japanese chow, in an authentic atmosphere eating very well made traditional items. Of course, sushi rolls, stir-fried noodles (hot or cold), Donburi (stir fried meats &/or veggies over rice), a number of combos and straight forward noodle soups,Bento (usually known as bento boxes) like a cafeteria platter with slots and walled spaces for a number of items, and daily specials. If the chefs are in a creative mood they put together some very different items, which will be highlighted. Beverages include saki(s), beer and wine, along with teas, coffee and soft drinks. Service very good and helpful. Clean and well managed.

Yelp
I tried this place once. Excellent in every way, just hard to get a seat since they are so popular! Worth the wait!!
google avatar

Anthony S.

Yelp
Phenomenal sushi, worth the wait. Definitely call to order ahead for takeout. Service was great, staff was friendly, and the ambiance was warm and inviting.

Alexander R.

Yelp
Best noodle shop on the peninsula. The Tom Yum is out of this world, best I have ever had. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Two delicious specials and a seaweed salad. I have never had anything but perfectly prepared and presented food at this restaurant. I enjoy their regular menu, and they often have an appetizer and a couple of entrees on the specials board. It is good to understand that this is not a fast food place, especially if they are very busy. The food is prepared to order and is delicious!

Polly G.

Yelp
Hands down, the absolute best food in Port Townsend and I've been here longer than most ;) I always order 'too' much because it is impossible not to. I literally crave hanazono, so good!

Yelp
Stopped in last Saturday right at noon, second customer of the day, this is a clean and organized restaurant, you order at the front and they bring the food to your table. My wife and I both had the Hanazono Roll, which is a spicy albacore tuna roll, it was fresh and packed with flavor and not too spicy. Also had the miso soup and an order of potstickers. Will be back for sure and want to try a noodle dish, saw many people ordering noodles and they looked great! I highly recommend this place you won't be disappointed. Just be prepared to be patient because the place fills up fast, but is worth the wait!

Yelp
We were visiting nearby and dropped by the town center for food. The two restaurants we checked were either fully booked or had a long line, so we eventually stumbled upon this gem! My friends and I shared assorted tempura. We each ordered a noodle dish - tonkatsu ramen, champon, and Tom yum noodle soup. It took a while for the food to show up, but they were amazing! We all agreed that the champon was the best - good variety of ingredients, broth of catching umami, lots of veggies. The tonkatau ramen was a classic one, and mine was an interesting combination of Tom yum soup and pho noodle. The assorted tempura was delicious as well - had a good balance of veggie and seafood. Service was great yet slow; food was delicious and in huge portion; price was reasonable.
google avatar

Cynthia D.

Yelp
We highly recommend the Hanazono Roll - albacore tuna. Delicious and 12 pieces to share among the 4 of us as an appetizer. The Tom-Yum noodle soup and Nabeyaki Udon noodle soups were hearty and delicious. To put the fire of the spice out from the Tom-Yum, have a piece of Green Tea Tiramasu cake - perfect ending. You can see the kitchen and preparation of the food. The owner/chef is very hospitable and so is the general ambiance of the place.

Yelp
First Class. Enjoyed beet salad, gyōza, tofu fries, tongatsu noodles! So Good, fresh and really sweet service. Would go back and definitely recommend.

Yelp
This little gem is tucked into a small space next to the Rose Theater on Taylor Street. Met a friend here for lunch and though the space is small, there are SO many yummy options on the menu! I settled on the Kakiage soup with udon noodles and tofu because it looked so different from anything I had seen on a menu. And YUM! Other reviews mention the delicious broth in their soups and it was! Staff is friendly and service was efficient. We arrived right after it opened and the tables quickly filled up so obviously popular with the locals-always a good sign. Am definitely planning a return visit.

Yelp
We have been enjoying the food here for a number of months now. The sushi rolls are nice and very filling. The bowls are awesome and wonderful, very fulfilling and flavorful. You order at the counter and pay when you make your selection. A little tip, come in and find a table, get your water and utensils and put them on your table, then order at the counter, noting your table number. It will make your experience much more enjoyable and comfortable. This is not a fast food place, have patience and understand everything is made to order and takes time. Wish we had a place like this where I live!! Enjoy!!!

Missy J.

Yelp
Hanazono has the best ramen and hot pots on the Olympic Peninsula and Great staff too!

Yelp
It takes a special team to recognize a fraught mother with a hungry toddler in a slammed restaurant on a Friday night but these beautiful humans did. Almost as soon as we sat down, the hostess noticed my son was hangry and remedied the impending storm with an immediate bowl of warm rice with soy sauce (which he inhaled) plus a coloring book and crayons. The chef smiled and made him giggle over the counter while mummy caught her breath and by the time the (scrumptious) Agedashi tofu and yakiudon arrived, all was calm, all was bright. Hallelujah.
google avatar

Steve T.

Yelp
Really top notch noodle house! The broths are outstanding! Do get the spinach salad, it isn't what you'd expect but it is outstanding. Been here several times, never disappointed.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
How am I just now finding out about this place? I got the Hanazono roll (which is a take on a spicy tuna roll) it was humongous, tuna was buttery...I have not had a roll this good in a very, very long time. I'm still thinking about it the next day. Not too saucy, not too skimpy, creative and well-presented. One roll was enough whereas I typically need 2-3 rolls to be satisfied. I will have a hard time going anywhere else in town, for fish or otherwise. I'd give them 6 stars if I could.

Deborah H.

Yelp
Hanazono is a charming bustling little place with great food. Love the edamame and veggie donburi so much! And there's sometimes the most decadent gluten free chocolate layer cake! I never leave disappointed. It's a special little spot in PT! Deb
google avatar

Theresa L.

Yelp
The sushi was fresh. The noodles delicious! I recommend the miso soup. You cannot dine in because of Covid. My boyfriend and I ordered our food and walked around within twenty minutes it was ready.
google avatar

Catamara R.

Yelp
I was expecting much more out of this establishment given how busy it is but was not impressed at all. There is very little seating here and if you are lucky enough to get a table, you'll have to order and pay at the counter. The ramen broths we ordered were both very bland. There are no condiments or sauces to 'spice' it up. You have to serve your own water, get your own utensils (nor tells you where they are) and nobody checks on you once you're given your food. Nor are any of the dishes removed from your table once say your appetizer is finished and your main entree comes out. Usually this wouldn't be a big deal but it is kind of lame when you are siting at a very small table. They are obviously more focused on capitalizing on take out orders then they are on customer service w/ people sitting down for a meal in their establishment.

Jason K.

Yelp
Consistent in quality and generous in serving size. Huge portions artfully arranged by local owners that truly care about their clientele's experience.
google avatar

Brett A.

Yelp
We were just visiting. This is some of the best ramen I've ever had. The ordering is a pain as they don't take your order at your table, but it's worth a little struggle for this amazing food. Thanks Hanazono!
google avatar

Kay W.

Yelp
We got the salad and Hana roll bath were excellent and salad was a good in portion size as well.
google avatar

Yelp
stopped in here for lunch because my friend who comes up to the area with frequency raved about their noodles. the port townsend film festival was going on and the line outside made for interesting people watching since we sat in the window seat. we got stir fried soba with veggies and tofu and the daily special green sushi roll with spinach and tempura green beans. both were very good and satisfied the lunch cravings for both of us. the restaurant was fairly empty but my friend said every time she's been there it's packed with a libe of people waiting outside for tables to be vacated. i'm thinking it was the crowds of the film festival that caused such a difference in who was looking for japanese food at lunchtime. but as soon as films let out and later in the day, i bet more tables would have been occupied. this is a place to keep on my radar for future return visits to pt. they do a good job and i'm happy to know about them.
google avatar

Simone H.

Yelp
Tonkatsu ramen is perfection. I lived in Japan for two years, and I'd say this was the perfect mix of authentic, but with its own spin. This place is an hour away from my home, but I think I'll be coming up here a few times a month to try everything else on the menu.
google avatar

Faith D.

Yelp
We were on a hunt for a nourishing meal after five days of hiking in the Olympics and very happily stumbled upon Hanazono! Delicious ramen and lots of side dishes to choose from if that's your thing. Highly recommend for any meal and look forward to returning again soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Creative asian fusion! I mostly go for sushi, which is fresh, creative, generous, delicious. But their periodic specials are really amazing and worth exploring - love their creativity. The ahi tacos!!! OMG delicious, it's like flavorful poke in a crunchy shell, so good. The noodle bowls and warm entrees are great winter fare, delicious. I am looking forward to seeing the dining room re-opened post COVID - I miss the cozy crowded vibe. But eat-in or to-go, this place is worth the wait, you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Nathan M.

Yelp
As new PT locals, having moved from somewhere with more Asian food options, my sweetie and I are SO thankful for Hanazono. We've tried several types of ramen, sushi and appetizers, all on point. Close to the ferry dock if you're visiting, worth going downtown if you live here oh and great service

Christina Collazo ..

Yelp
Visited solo on an early Sunday evening. The staff recommended the corn tea and Yakiudon. I'd never intentionally ordered udon noodles before and I'm so glad I took the recommendation. The dish was excellent. The veggies were fresh and it was an overall pleasant dining experience.
google avatar

Ligaya D.

Yelp
We got takeout while on vacation. Their setup for takeout is really great, with a plexiglass window setup at their door. The food was delicious, the servings were generous. The agedashi tofu was the best I've ever had, the broth was so delicious.
google avatar

Hiroko M.

Yelp
Had chanpon ramen noodle ($14) and yakisoba ($12), decent taste. Friendly server, nice casual atmosphere. Still I don't know why Ramen and Yakisoba are expensive in the US. You can get amazingly delicious ramen and yakisoba with a half of the price in Japan... チャンポンと焼きそばを食べて見ました。日本のお値段と味の基準が頭から抜けないので、満足とは言えないんですが、アメリカだということを考えると、いい方かも。

Yelp
Super delicious Asian food. We love the fried chicken bits (Kaarage) as an app... sushi rolls, various noodle soups...and the black cod dish...all superb. We don't live far, so we often get it to go, but the dining room, while not fancy, is quite pleasant too. Good selection of sake, beer and a few wines.

Arsenio E.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. I recommend everything. The soups, the sushi, the salad, WOW! Very very very great! You just come here and you'll never regret it.

Yelp
Although a bit cramped, this noodle shop in an old storefront has an enticing diner-like feel with copious natural light. All-in-all, a pleasant spot. It drew us in from the sidewalk. The vast majority of the menu features Japanese items, with a few other Asian things thrown in, hence "Asian Noodle." Went with the kakiage soup, which is pretty basic: A bowl of fish broth that, standing alone, actually didn't have too much punch, flavor-wise, but it's served alongside a tangled knot of crispy, eggy kakiage tempura veggies and tiny shrimp, which you top the soup with. Overall, definitely more impressive texturally than on the flavor side, and quite satisfying on a cool autumn day. Shared a salmon roll, which was quite fresh and, if I recall correctly, a good deal at only five bucks. Service was friendly and efficient. We weren't blown away by anything at Hanazono, but it seemed like a pretty solid mid-priced option.

Kailey P.

Yelp
Wasn't able to try the food because the wait was 40 minutes after I already waited in line for 15. The hostess or whatever you want to call her, told me to go stand in line behind the barstool area where there wasn't any room and a ton of people...then bumped into me because they're wasn't enough room for customers to wait there. Stressful atmosphere and not friendly. I hope they figure out a better system.

Jonny B.

Yelp
Best Japanese joint in the peninsula. This place is legit. Good sake selections. The owner (bf) is super nice!

Amita M.

Yelp
Amazing food!! freshly made, the hostess was great. My kids are picky eaters and they loved the food!!.

Yelp
The best thing to happen on our trip to Port Townsend was when we rolled up in front of a Thai place and my daughter said, "Uh, no." So we proceeded to Hanazono and were well rewarded. The servers were polite, efficient and knowledgeable of the menu. I had a salmon skin roll that was magic. No need for much soy, wasabi or other flavors. The potstickers were fantastic. Not deep fried crap many of us have come to accept. And my daughter had teriyaki chicken that was excellent. Actual cooked meat in a wonderful bowl of flavor. Not charred stuff with sugary coating on it like so many bowl places put out. Just a great experience at a good price in a scenic part of a pretty cool town.
google avatar

Melanie A.

Yelp
Yum. This humble noodle joint is the best spot in Port Townsend. They take incredible pride in their food and they should. The flavors in the vegan soup are spot on, a little spicy and rich in flavor without being heavy. We've also had their sushi, it's not your usual sushi, it's well thought out with perfect combinations in each roll. Nice range of sake to choose from as well. Employees handle the crowds well and service is always pleasant. Don't leave PT without stopping by!!

Kenta N.

Yelp
Spent over $100 dollars for 4 people. We're all japanese and dissapointed by the quality of japanese food here. We got the ramen and it tasted low quality. The yakisoba we couldnt even eat we had to throw it away. The sushi was falling apart and tasted bland. The only thing decent was the geso karaage. I would never go hear again. Im guessing the quality of their food got worse cause I did not see the japanese owners.
google avatar

Jamie N.

Yelp
This was a highlight of our trip to Port Townsend! Our server was really funny and the food was incredibly fresh. The seafood salad was nicely dressed and had crisp daikon and beet on top. We also had the deep fried squid, yakisoba with chicken and a special maki. My boyfriend is quite the Japanese food aficionado and he was incredibly impressed with the food.

Yelp
Service: fantastic. Spicy soup = pretty yummy Tonkatsu and Shoyu noodle soup = the worst thing I've ever been served. Those two soups are very popular, but I have NO idea how. She set them down, and like anyone who eats by smell first, I took a sniff. No need though, the odor pretty much permeated the air around us. I couldn't even bring some of the broth to my mouth, I was so grossed out to nearly the point of gagging. The smell was a bit like summer Porta Potty - not a clean one, but a ripe one. I thought it was a joke, and my husband and I just looked around confused and grossed out. It was like crap stew. The waitress was so helpful though - the stench is from the bamboo, and she offered to have it remade without it. I couldn't imagine eating anything like it ever again, and requested something else. A few minutes later, I had some really good spicy soup in front of me. My husband was too nice to ask for a replacement though, and spent the entire day gagging from the taste in his mouth. He didn't even eat a fourth of it (the Shoyu) before giving up and just eating up our leftover edemame. I truly have no idea how those things are even on the menu, or how anyone can claim that they're delicious without throwing it up in the same breath. Still, good spicy soup. I don't remember what it was called, but if you say 'spicy soup', they'll know what it is.
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much but we were hungry and it was late. I walked in and it smelled so good. A classy hole in the wall that truly exceeded my expectations. A simple menu done right!
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
Excellent sushi, delicious miso soup and salads. Look for the changing specials. Easy call in ordering and window pickup, friendly staff!

Matt C.

Yelp
Exceptional. This was our first visit since the pandemic. It's currently takeout only and they have an efficient system. The yakiudon was excellent with fresh vegetables and perfectly matched flavors.

Kai B.

Yelp
It was sooo amazing could not recommend a better place food a service was amazing the sushi also good as well
