A Beloved Taco Spot Lands in a Virginia Brewery — And More November Openings Around D.C. | Eater DC

"A sweets startup from husband-and-wife team Kara Terrell and Ike Emejuru soft-launched a stand more than a year after debuting online, following pop-ups and long-term residencies across town. The doughnut lineup is seasonally flavored and currently includes options like Early Grey tea with lavender, rosewater buttercream, cold brew glaze, cinnamon streusel, and more. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday–Wednesday and extend to 8 p.m. Thursday–Sunday (unless they sell out earlier)." - Emily Venezky

Google
Loved their donut! It was super fresh, really soft, and full of flavor. Also looked so good—very tempting! The owner was really nice and welcoming too. I’ll definitely be back to try the other flavors. So far, the S’mores donut is my favorite! 🍩✨

Google
This donut shop is so good! I got the Blackberry Matcha and the flavors were great! I was able to grab a cute little sticker and I thought the prices were extremely reasonable. The cashier was helpful when trying to make a flavor decision. I wish I had more time to try more flavors!

Google
Got a few donuts and the flavors were all fine. The brioche itself was pretty basic and was just a vehicle to have the frosting/flavor on top. Got the following, with asterisks to indicate what I’d get again: - Boysenberry - Wild Blueberry - Passionfruit* - Cookies and Cream

One of a kind, seasonally inspired, handmade brioche doughnuts. Kara & Ike take exceptional care and attention to ensuring the product and the community they serve are held in the highest of respects. Choosing to create brioche doughnuts is a risk that comes with challenges but pays off tremendously as HCD's works are decadent indulgences. Their doughnuts are delectable using unique flavor combinations like Matcha Fluff and Yuzu Ganache that pair perfectly with delicate brioche, and their service feels personally catered towards and comforting. A true treat in Union Market!

Google
The doughnuts are large, fresh, fluffy, light, and delicious! Because of that, they are worth the price, you can taste that they are not commercially mass produced. The different flavors strike a nice balance of unique and interesting without being over the top. As we tend to stick to more traditional flavors, I thought we’d prefer those (like buttermilk glazed & chocolate ganache) but so glad we were adventurous and tried the more creative flavors because we loved those too (yuzu, cookies & cream, maple brown butter)! The young couple who runs are from DC and adorable, the staff are super friendly and kind making recommendations to suit your taste preferences. Warning, they tend to sell out by evening so get there early enough to have your choice of favorites!

Google
Kara and Ike take great care to rotate flavors with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and even add little details like a touch of sea salt to balance out the sweetness on a chocolate ganache. These are handmade brioche doughnuts, so each one is a real treat. (I’ve been a fan since they were just a pop up at Solid State Books.) My favorites are cold brew, yuzu, and matcha blackberry — but everything is excellent!

Google
I'm pretty picky with my doughnuts, but these are top tier. Highly recommended going out of your way to try them. Team are super friendly too. Would definitely eat again!

These donut flavors were so creative and fun! I got the maple brown sugar and strawberry chai (filled with jam!!!) and they were so scrumptious

Yelp
This is in the food hall portion of union market. My first thought looking at it is wow that's kind of a lot for a doughnut. But then I actually looked at the donuts and said oh I'll get half a dozen. This actually ended up being seven as apparently one of them came out on the smaller side so they offered me an extra. Having gotten them to share with others, they all ended up disappearing quickly, and I only got a little taste of the passionfruit one myself, which did deliver on flavor. It was a splendid looking spread, and the flavor choices were distinctive. Their website states that they are considering doing options for special dietary needs, but at the moment this is not the place for that. Perhaps they will expand into their own store.

Yelp
Handcraft Doughnuts at Union Market is always tempting -- but bring your wallet. I grabbed a half dozen and, while good, they didn't quite wow me. At about $5 each, I expected more decadence. Some were a little dry, and I miss the richer fillings they used to offer. Overall taste? A 7.5/10. Still a solid spot if you get there early (they often sell out by the afternoon), but at these prices, I may pass next time

Yelp
This wasn't my original plan, but my planned spot was closed for Eid. I heard both seen and heard about Handcraft Doughnuts though, so it had been on my list to try. What better opportunity to explore a new spot than National Donut Day? I didn't show up until late afternoon, and due to the special day, there were only two donut options left XD. They had a bunch of beautiful ones on display, but you could only see the label for the ones left. I could pick between passionfruit and wild basil blueberry. There was literally only one passionfruit left and a bunch of blueberry, so it was an easy decision picking things. My buddy and I tried the wild basil blueberry first -- what a lovely balance! Well, before even talking about the flavors, let's talk about the donut first. Great texture -- nice and doughy, far from dry. We were both quite pleased. The blueberry and basil balance was perfection. As amazing as it was, we agreed the passionfruit was better... that flavor was just so pleasant! Luckily, I was able to come to the Union Market area the next day for someone's birthday and I was able to grab the brown butter maple and strawberry chai. I loved both -- it's hard to pick a fav between the two, but I will say that the latter had an amazing strawberry jam filling, but the top had powdered sugar that kinda just fell everywhere. They made it rather messy lol. I am fairly certain Handcraft Doughnuts is in the exact same spot B Doughnut was in way back in the day, and it definitely lives up to them... I think they might be slightly more expensive though. Thankfully I can say it's a scenario where I don't feel bad spending $4-5 on a donut because of how good they are.

Yelp
Yummy donuts inside Union Market! They're not cheap but they're tasty and so worth it! There was a line here and I can see why! It's just that good. It was really hard to pick but I went with the brown butter maple and OMG, I want one (or two) like today. I always say I'm not huge on sweets, but this place is going to make me return soon. The service was top notch! Thank you!!

Yelp
While out enjoying some beautiful weather in Union market, I noticed that the people next to me were eating donuts. As a self certified donut connoisseur, Sommelier, aficionado, I had to ask where they had purchased them. I also had some friends with me so this was a great opportunity to Induct them in to membership. We chose four donuts. The Matcha berry, the chocolate, the glazed, and the strawberry. The Matcha berry was our absolute favorite. The Matcha was not overly sweet, but gave a nice creamy experience and the very inside was fresh and a beautiful accompaniment to the Matcha. The chocolate is definitely a dark chocolate so it's a bit bitter. If you're looking for a sweet chocolate experience, this is not the donut for you. The glaze we rated a three on a scale of one to five. The inside was a bit dry and didn't have a great chewy mouth, Deal. The glaze was not overly sweet, which we lied. The other one with strawberry also got a 3.5 because we did enjoy the chewing us and the fresh berry experience. Overall, the donuts were good and when I'm back in the area, I will definitely get the Matcha again.

Yelp
This donut was everything I wanted and more. Look at it, it's perfect. So light and fluffy, every nook and cranny covered in glaze. There was also cheesecake filling beneath those perfectly juicy blueberries. Do you see the lemon zest and rosemary flecks? Like c'mon, no wonder they are called handcraft donuts. I don't even care that this donut was over $7 - it was big and made my day so much better. Please stay in Union market or open a storefront!
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly, it's more like a 3.5 imo. I tried the strawberry chai and the blueberry basil donuts. Generally speaking, they were a little doughier and denser than I would like for a brioche donut but tbh I purchased them an hour before closing time. The strawberry chai was my favorite of the 2 just because I feel like it had a little more going on. It was topped with a generous amount of powdered sugar and about half of it was filled with a strawberry compote. My guess is the chai flavoring was incorporated into the dough for this one, but it was incredibly subtle. The blueberry basil frosting itself was amazing. It was so strong without being artificial or sickeningly sweet, but there wasn't a hint of basil that I was able to find and the donut wasn't filled or anything, so it relied heavily on the frosting. I love a good sweet treat, but I don't think this would be my first choice in Union Market,

Yelp
Got the yuzu ganache and I actually could taste the citrus. Loved the variety of flavors, they all looked so good. The donut dough itself was a little cakes for me but I still enjoyed it.
google avatar

Kyla G.

Yelp
Service is great the individual shared suggestions based on her actively engaging in conversation with me to figure out my preference. But the actual donut was dry and lacked sweetness. Got the banana cream donut 5/10 too dry not enough filling

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE these doughnuts! They're not too doughy! They're light and the perfect amount of sweat! ALLLLLLL the flavors, EVERY SINGLE FLAVOR IS delicious! It's genuinely difficult to choose and not get all of them every time! Everyone that works here is amazingly kind and they're always smiling. Always positive vibes and good eats! It's currently 1am & I want some right now LOL!!!

Yelp
I've now been to the Handcraft Doughnuts twice. The first time I went they were completely sold out but I got the opportunity to meet the master baker behind it (Ike). When I found myself around Union market again I had to stop by. I loved their options. I ended up getting 3 doughnuts (Rosewater Buttercream, Brown Butter Maple, and Yuzu). I was surprised of how good Yuzu was. You can taste the quality of the doughnut in the texture. Personally whenever I get a doughnut from Dunkin Donut my stomach hurts afterwards. These doughnut tastes way better than most typical doughnuts. Definitely worse every bit. Ike is awesome as well. Very personable and a great host.

Yelp
Loved the texture of these donuts - not too dense with a nice chew. A little expensive for donuts but pretty average for a high quality pastry in DC, and the donuts are a decent size. I especially liked the yuzu glazed donut which wasn't too sweet and had a nice citrus flavor. Super convenient to grab for a snack while getting lunch or coffee in Union Market!

Yelp
Some of the best doughnuts I have had in D.C. the dough is very light and the flavoring doesn't taste like a bunch of sugar or artificial sweeteners. Unfortunately, I came pretty late on a Saturday afternoon so most of the flavors I wanted to try were out. However, the owner made some great recommendations for what was left. I landed up getting a buttermilk glazed one and loved how light the whole treat was. To ensure you have a wide variety of options to choose from, it's best to come way before 1pm.

Yelp
Hands down the best donuts I've ever had--and I'm a serious foodie. I tried the Earl Grey on my first visit and couldn't stop thinking about it. I made a point to go back before heading home to PA. It's hard to pick a favorite, but the blackberry lemon matcha donut takes the top spot, followed up by the strawberry chai. One of the owners was so cool and even took the time to chat after I raved about their elevated flavors. Absolutely worth the trip!!

Yelp
Very happy to have a new doughnut place in Union Market! The doughnuts are large and airy, but still have a substance to them. A decent collection of choices include some savory ones. Very nice pit stop with the kids.

Yelp
Appreciate the conversation and opportunity to try excellent doughnut flavors from a great local business popping up in another great local business - Solid State Books. Today I got the classic buttermilk glazed donut, chocolate ganache (salt flakes really made a difference in each bite) and cinnamon streusel. Raised doughnuts were a little dry, the chocolate doughnut seemed the most tender with a more pleasant texture. I last tried for the first time in August 2023 and remember the fun flavors including passionfruit.

Yelp
I'm excited for this new business! I was fortunate to have met one of the people behind this business years ago at a speaking engagement. Recently, she shared with me that they were launching this business so I was excited to support during their first week of delivery. I'm definitely not someone that would trust myself to order a half a dozen donuts at any point in time for myself. Not only is my sweet tooth quickly satisfied, but I would hate to waste any donuts. So I waited until a day that I knew I'd be able to share my donuts with others. On their website, you can currently order either by the half dozen or a dozen, seasonal or classics. The Classic flavors include: Earl Grey Sugared with Lavender and Orange, Buttermilk Glaze, Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Glaze, Coffee Glaze and Cinnamon Streusel. The Seasonal flavors (for now) include: Lemon Meringue, Blueberry Cheesecake, Banana Cream, PB&J, Buttermilk Glaze and Earl Grey Sugared with Lavender and Orange. I ordered online the day before for delivery at 10am before I would be visiting family. Online ordering was a breeze, but be mindful that the delivery charges definitely add up quickly. But my donuts were delivered fresh, on-time, packaged nicely and the donuts were delicious. Of the flavors I sampled, I think th Cookies & Cream (with cream cheese icing) was my favorite. Overall, the donuts are fresh, fluffy and sweet...but not too sweet which is a balance that I personally love. Excited to watch this business really take off! Congrats on the launch!

Yelp
It was a love for travel that inspired a husband-wife team to start a local doughnut shop out of Ivy City's Union Kitchen, a food incubator. Thursday through Sunday at 9 a.m. until they sell out, the team creates ten different kinds of small-batch doughnuts from buttermilk glazed to cookies and cream. The doughnuts themselves are perfect texture- never dry and always doughy in the right way. My favorite was the Earl Grey Sugared with Lavender and Orange. The taste is powerful without being overpowering. To order, customers go to Union Kitchen. Street parking is easy to find nearby in the mornings.

Yelp
They honestly make the donuts presentation look so pretty, in reality it's not all that lol i had The cookie n cream and it didn't taste like anything. Just be careful and don't let the looks fool you. Happy eating.

Yelp
I found out about Handcraft Doughnuts on popville and surprised to find this new establishment in the northeast quadrant of the city. Had to give it a try since their website and info made it seem like this would be the best doughnut I would ever have. Went to pick it up at Union Kitchen which was a seamless process. The location for pick-up is really on Fenwick Street NE, making it easy to park on the street and grab your doughnuts. The owner Ike came out to hand-deliver the tasty treats. Once they were brought home, we devoured the half dozen classics like vultures. They were actually too beautiful to eat and you could tell everything was made with the highest quality of detail and ingredients. If you're a donut aficionado, you'd want to try this treat!

Yelp
The best doughnuts in DC. Well worth the cost of you care about texture, quality and ingredients of your doughnuts. Perfect balance between dough and icing/toppings. Delicious!!

G B.

Yelp
Dc prices are out of control but this was a decent $5,50 donut freshly baked with good dark chocolate ganache

Josue G.

Yelp
Super friendly service! Good doughnuts, wish they offered coffee though but otherwise a good experience.

Yelp
Hands down the best donuts I've ever had. Not too sweet, full of flavor, and quality ingredients. Can tell they're carefully made by a talented chef due to how light and airy they are. The boood orange cream with merengue and earl grey are by far my favorite. The buttermilk glazed is also an amazing staple piece- perfect level of sweetness with a real pure milky vanilla profile. Worth every penny!

Yelp
These are the best donuts in DC in my opinion! I had the classic donuts and was blown away by all the flavors. The dough and all the toppings tasted fresh and high quality. Most of the donuts I've had in DC are too sweet, stale tasting or have too many competing flavors but these were so well balanced. The apricot jelly donut was one of the best desserts I've had this year and I have a soft spot for the cookies & cream and cold brew ones too. I'm definitely going back to try their seasonal donuts which look delicious! 10/10 recommend.

Emma D.

Yelp
After seeing their Instagram prior to launch, I've been meaning to try the doughnuts here, and finally ordered them yesterday. The doughnuts were perfectly fluffy and light, and the flavors were incredible. My favorite was the apricot jelly donut, but all of them are 100% worth it. I'll definitely be going back to try the seasonal flavors!
google avatar

Yelp
The most delicious and delicate donuts I have ever had! You know a donut is good if you do not even need all the different toppings! I am not a donut fan, but for these, I make an exception. My favorite was the Apricot one. Will definitely order them again!
