Yelp Review 2023 #315:
I don't frequent Handel's since all their locations are too far from where I live. However, they do have good ice cream which reminds me of when I used to live in the Midwest - where small mom and pop old-fashioned ice cream parlors are common. I thought this all seemed familiar and nostalgic - it turns out Handel's is from the Midwest! Ohio to be exact. And all I know about Ohio is that they're in the top 5 highest number of ser!al k!llers in the country. Here's Handel's putting a happy spin on Ohio.
They have old school flavors you can't find in grocery stores, and some flavors that became popular after the '80's. And of course, Ohio's own, Buckeye (peanut butter ice cream with fudge ripple and buckeye candy pieces). It's a good place to take the entire family no matter what generation - there's a flavor for everyone.
They have hurricanes (which we call concretes where I'm from) - ice cream with mix-ins (cookies, brownies, chocolate bars) which has a lighter mouthfeel due to air getting mixed in from the blending process. A softer version of ice cream but firmer than a milkshake. They're add!ct!ng so, watch out! You can sundaes, sherbets, sorbets, ice cream by the scoop or by the pint. They pride themselves for making fresh ice cream daily. And you can tell good ice cream when it melts/ softens quickly. Hard ice cream means poor quality (high water content and additives).
My favorite flavors: black cherry, coffee chocolate chip, black walnut, monkey business, and cherry cordial. I recently tried their chocolate chip cookie dough - it was alright. What I do want to try next time: horchata.
You'll see people eating their frozen treat outside the store. It's a casual place.
The only word of caution I have is if you're getting a pint, make sure you watch them fill the container with ice cream and not just a bit of ice cream and air.
