Handel's Homemade Ice Cream

Very very bad ice cream. The pistachio tastes like some kind of weird watered down amaretto ice cream with huge pieces of pistachio. The buckeye flavor is covered in “hot fudge” that tastes like corn syrup. The cookie dough was bland and watered down. They’re definitely not using the 1945 recipes haha. Come down to New Orleans. We’ll teach you how to make food.

Good quality ingredients. You can taste the homemade style. Rocky Road was packed with flavor. The portions are very generous. "No skimping"! How may scoops tall are you?

Great ice cream, friendly staff and generous portions. Be careful, the portions are huge and the small size can be more than enough for most. The early issues I noticed (hard to read menu board) on my first trip were fixed by adding a bunch of laminated menus by the line. They also added size charts with photos so you're not surprised about the portions (you still will be, they're pretty big). My wife and I love stopping here after a shopping trip.

My wife’s favorite is pistachio, which I always share with her. After reading the one-star review of that flavor we almost didn’t go. But the complaint about “huge pieces of pistachio” made us think twice. To us “huge pieces” sounds like what you want, not the miserly amounts of pistachio found in most store brands. So, my wife asked for a sample, and approved. The serving was plenty for both of us. We both liked the flavor, and the identifiable pieces of pistachio. 5 stars.

Best tasting ice cream! Product gets 5 stars but service gets zero! They need someone who truly knows how to manage employees. I am a frequent visitor because I love the ice cream but they run out of flavors alot, even by noon sometimes. Last visit there was a long line of customers waiting to order but 10 employees just standing talking waiting for orders and only one register open. I said is everyone afraid to ring up customers or something? And he called one of the standing people up. But really? If they don't know how to run a business why be a manager

They had music and photobooth out while waiting in line. Prepare to wait in line for awhile since they are brand new location here. But Icecream is def worth it...we used to eat them when we lived in SoCal. So glad we have a location here now! The workers are all great and work hard to serve you very polite! Def coming back again. We got the 4 scoop sampler bc just too many good flavors.

This place is on point. Extremely fast and friendly. Fantastic location with plenty of outdoor seating. They have walk windows you can order from outside or you can order inside as well. Ice cream is fantastic and the options are plentiful. The price and value are unmatched.

This place has delicious ice cream. The three issues that knock it down a star is 1. Marshmallow amounts, nut amounts and chocolate chunks are inconsistent. Sometimes wayyy too many nuts. Often chocolate chunks overpower the mint flavor but usually it's skimpy on the marshmallows in two flavors. Issues mentioned in mint chip, rocky road and s'mores. 2. At some locations they allow two flavors in their single scoop waffle cone. This place did once by one person. Boo to handles corporate rules. 3. The scoop density and size should be trained. Some of those gals make perfect cones but others, the scoops are hollow or small. Board of health in northern Nevada needs to teach folks sternly that gloves do not mean push your hair back, touch money and then handle cones and scoops (similar happens in other places)

Clean, comfortable, great service and good ice cream. This place is a real treat and well priced. Their motto is "we don't skimp" and by gosh they don't. A big, thick milkshake for $6.25 is a steal and the cones are amazing. Treat yourself, you'll be delighted

The ice cream is soft and flavorful! The staff are always friendly and the owners love of this place shows. It's always packed, so leave yourself time. They need to put their menu on a QR code out front or printed menus near the doors. Trying to figure out who's in line and who's looking at the menu is confusing. That and the noise level are my only two complaints. I am so happy this place opened! I'll come back as long as they are.

Coming from a previous Handel's manager of 3 years I gotta say, this store needs some more work. From tables being constantly sticky to workers not having great attitudes - no emotion, not knowing that they have stamp cards, not knowing common info about their product, and lopsided ice cream cones...like use the scooper to compress and line it up correctly jeez. . I know they're still new and have a lot to work on. Not to mention the Ambiance seems like a crazy house with all the white walls. Anyways coming from a manager, please train your employees better lol I almost asked for an application so I can fix all this haha.

Unique flavors, superb ice cream, can be busy but it's worth it. Get a 4 scoop sampler and try several flavors! Cute lil neighborhood ice cream shop!

Ummmm YUMMMM Tried for the first time after a movie and was so impressed. It was a Tuesday and freaking PACKED that's how you know it's good. I got a medium size cone and at first I thought it was kinda pricy but when I got my ice cream.... Omg it was huge! Could have easily gotten a small. I got banana cream pie and caramel latte and they were both soooo good. The texture? Immaculate. The flavor? Absolutely delicious. So creamy so good. I ended up getting both flavors as pints to take home.

Handel is the way to go for a summer treat or for your sweet tooth fix. They have Multiple flavors to choose from, my favorite flavor is ohhh dough. cant wait to go again

Went during a rainstorm thinking it might not be as busy but it was still packed! Line went pretty fast though. A lot of selections but as soon as I saw tin Lizzie (butterscotch ripple ice cream with toffee bits) was so excited. However they were out of it so ordered lemon with graham cracker pieces-pretty good but I was still so disappointed as butterscotch ripple is so hard to find but my favorite. Got a quart of birthday cake ice cream for grandkids which they loved. Would probably only get takeaway in the future as it's so crowded. Service was very friendly.

Super reasonable pricing with great quality and value. You get three scoops with any size and it's packed! There are kids cones but it's literally I feel like the same size of how much ice cream as a regular small size. We all couldn't finish it. The only thing that stinks is that you have to pick only one flavor for the three scoops if u choose any small sizes, you can't pick different flavors unless u go to medium or large sizes and then u can do two flavors. It's Just a lot of ice cream lol But u can prolly ask for a medium or large and then just ask for an extra cup to share with someone else for more value and different flavors for your buck. The flavors I recommend are the banana cream pie and the taro! The pistachio and the birthday cake was not one of my faves. The Ice cream is very flavorful and creamy!! I'd go again! It's conveniently located in the middle of the outdoor mall right next to Ulta so you can walk around to burn off those calories if you want and go shopping. Plenty of parking!

So many flavors and interesting choices. They have a sampler of 4 choices and a great value! Their milk shakes are awesome too! The place was crowded with a long line. Friendly employees & appear to enjoy their job! We will be back!

We absolutely love the sampler! It's enough ice cream for 2 adults and a kiddo. We aren't huge on sugar so but whenever we do the sampler gives us the opportunity to try a little bit of everything for a decent price. Service is fast and friendly . You can sit inside our outside. We usually enjoy ours to go. Will be coming back :)

Great ice cream with TONS of flavor options, almost too many to even decide. We spent quite a bit of time trying to choose 8 different flavors and the cashier was extremely patient and friendly the entire time. Ambiance here is pretty great from outside, can take in the beautiful views of Mt. Rose while grubbing down on ice cream. Will always continue to return, $6 for 4 scoops of ice cream is kinda unreal. At other places you'd be paying $15+ for that. Love it!

Wow service is fast! I love that they have taro ice cream. My husband loves the pups. Under $5 too, they take card. Have bathrooms and seating and have parking.

Ever since wally world no longer carries a black cherry ice cream, I had to try Handel's version. I still think wally worlds version was better but it probably had more artificial sugars. The lines may seem long but ignore it because they have googobs of people servicing you inside and at one window servicing people in the courtyard. Service is quick since they have an abundance of ice cream scoopers manning the rolls of ice cream ice boxes behind the counter, there was at least ten to twelve workers just scooping the ice cream behind the counter in a open setting. The ice cream I had was okay, not blow me off my feet, but not bad. I did sample their chocolate, I guess I have a preference for another brand which is only available in southern nevada and some of the other states below nevada. I didn't get to try the coffee flavour because none was available that day. I guess I need to make another trip to vegas for some great chocolate ice cream.

We've back a few times and it's been great each time. Tasty flavors and malts and great hot fudge sundaes. Service is quick if it's not too busy and overall a good value. I love any chocolate flavor they have going on!

Great find for a fun family treat! Ice cream was great! I preferred the shake to the soft-serve hurricane. It was busy, but the service was still fast. The scoops tall wall painting is perfect for a quick photo with the family. Definitely worth a visit, and memorable, will take out next out of town guests.

The ice cream here is fantastic and there are so many flavors to choose from! The texture is super creamy and they also are very generous with serving sizes. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because my most recent visit the service wasn't great, the man in the window was trying to rush us along even though there was nobody else in line. Other times the service has been very good.

Creamy, flavorful, delicious ice cream! I love the creativity in all of handels flavors. The horchata is a beautiful blend of sweet and cinnamon. The midnight dark chocolate ice cream was so luscious and the peanut butter cups and pretzel bits were perfectly integrated. Every time I come to handels I fall further in love with their fun and unique flavors! Line was long but moved super quickly!

The best taro ice cream in town! Be warned that the sizes are enormous - the kids size is probably big enough for most adults. Service and set up is like most ice cream shops in town, but the nice thing about Handel's is the walk up order window.

I stopped in on a random winter weeknight and even then, there was a small line almost out the door. I like to consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of mint chocolate chip ice cream in particular. Sometimes, the mint becomes overwhelming or the chocolate chip ratio is sparse. Not at Handel's! The first lick revealed a perfectly balanced concoction of creaminess and minty-ness with semi-sweet chocolate bits distributed so you get at least one with each mouthful. The waffle cone held up to the generous scoops and packed a vanilla flavored crunch. The ice creamery was well lit, very clean and brightly decorated. The ambiance was definitely like an old fashioned ice cream parlor of years gone by.

Handles is a go to spot for some delicious ice cream! They're always well staffed, super nice and friendly and there's plenty of seating. I love how this spot is at the mall, it's an asset to an otherwise food desert of a mall!

The portions and ice cream quality are awesome. I got a "single" cone and it was loaded so high I couldn't finish it. The flavors are great! Staff is a little weird, they don't exactly have social skills

My kid and I stopped in here today since he was wanting ice cream. We walked inside and there was a long line. I asked him he wanted to go somewhere else or wait in line. He wanted to wait in line. The line moved well considering it was long. They only had 2 registers available. We ordered 2 short vanilla cake cones. Our order was short and simple and the lady behind the counter was nice. We picked up our cones a few minutes later and ate outside since there was no place to eat inside. My kid enjoyed his ice cream. To me, the ice cream was good. No complaints on the ice cream but it tasted just like any other ice cream. Nothing special. Maybe I'll stop by again another day and try something else but I don't think it's worth the wait. If I happen to walk in next time and there's a long line, I'm turning right back around. Of course, the only reason I stopped in there was because the kid wanted ice cream. Baskin Robbin's come back!!

Also available - Vegan/sorbets, sherberts, icees, sundaes, hurricanes, shakes, handel pops, etc. Atmosphere - Open 7 days a week. Winter/holiday hours are from 11am or noon until 9pm or 10pm; see pictures or their website. Normal business hours are 11am to 10pm daily. Service - Good; keep in mind they are still a very new business. So please be patient. Price - $11.75 a quart. Expensive, but that is the cost for quality. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success here since August of 2024, to your company's success since 1945, and with your 120+ locations.

I've known Handel's for awhile as it was always a place I had to get when I went to Torrance, CA to see my family. It was just a must for me every single time. So.. when I found out Reno was getting one, I was over the moon about it and I'm glad my love for Handel's is now shared around Northern NV. I finally stopped by today while my husband and I were on our monthly date of trying different food places. So Handel's was one of those places we wanted to stop by for sure. The place was pretty busy with the outdoor ordering and was busy as well inside of the shop, but the line went pretty quick. I was feeling the coffee chocolate chip and my husband wanted to try the Taro (Ube) flavor. As I always remembered Handel's being: the ice cream is just soooo good. It's creamy, smooth, and to me, the ice cream just taste like it was freshly made. We ordered our ice cream on a 'small' waffle cone, but it was still a lot for a 'small' , we were so full for the rest of the day. Handel's has a ton of flavors to choose from and you have the option to do the sample 4 ice creams which I did not know you can do. I have and always will love Handel's and it being in Reno now is just such a win for us as to simply explain: this is REALLY good ice cream. I mean.. I don't have to wait till the next time I'm in Southern California to get their ice cream anymore. My husband and I will have to be back with our son next time and to grab a pint of ice cream to bring home.

This place is busy, so don't expect to get right in and out. They have a lot of flavors to choose from and the ice cream is creamy and delicious. Serving sizes are generous and they offer several different kinds of cones. We will definitely be back!

Located inside the Summit Mall renamed the Shayden Summit Mall. Most of my friends still know it as Summit Mall. On the night that we went, there was a huge line. The four-flavor sampler is reasonably priced. They have a huge variety of flavors such as chocolate orange, coffee chocolate chip, and horchata. The ice cream is creamy, smooth, and decadent. The ice cream was delicious. We all got different flavors so we could try a variety of flavors. Some of the flavors were a bit too sweet for me. My favorite was the coffee. The line was huge and we placed our orders at the counter and then sat down to wait for our orders to come up. The staff seemed overwhelmed. There were a few mistakes made with some orders. But, mistakes were fixed with a smile and kindness. While it was extremely, busy and the business was still trying to work out some kinks we received our order in a reasonable amount of time. You can taste the quality of the ingredients. They don't skimp on flavor.

First trip to Handels and my review is mixed. The line was long but pretty organized and it moved pretty fast. Big menu with lots of different, fun flavors. And the ice cream was pretty good. You could taste that its made on site. The portion thing is pretty weird and feels like a forced upsale. We had a 2 year old with us and tried to order one scoop. We were told 2 1/2 was minimum. Kinda dumb. Then I ordered a waffle cone and asked for 2 scoops. We were told 3 1/2 was minimum. Again, kinda dumb. We paid around $15 for the two items which I thought was fair considering we had to get so much. Probably go again. But maybe not since a Cold Stone is opening a little closer.

I am so happy we finally have a Handels in Reno!!!!!! Staff is always pleasant and typically service is pretty quick! I always get the 4 flavor sampler, and either share, or take my leftovers home! The ice cream is amazing and so creamy, and so many flavors to choose from!! Great location at the Summit in Reno!

When you walk into the ice cream shop you can see the ice cream production behind the counter. There are rows and rows of ice cream flavors. We stopped by after a movie at summit mall century theater. I enjoyed the cherry ice cream in a waffle cone, my partner enjoyed the salted Carmel truffle in a dish. Our friends had Banana Cream Pie in a regular cone and chocolate carmel in a dish. All were delicious. There open from 12-10pm

I went here after having a bad day and the ice cream is absolutely amazing! It cheered me right up. There is a huge variety of flavors and it isn't outrageously expensive. I got a waffle bowl with a Cherry Vanilla and Chocolate Malt. The Cherry Vanilla had large pieces of maraschino cherries on n it, which was perfect. The chocolate malt ice cream was so smooth and creamy and the waffle bowl was crisped to perfection. This is my new go to ice cream shop. I can't wait to go back.

South Reno finally gets an ice cream place that isn't fro-yo! So excited to have this ice cream shop in our neck of the woods. Great location at the Summit Mall! Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well, with a window to order from outside. I've been here twice now and both times were great experiences. I love how many unique flavors there are - and great that they let you try a flavor before ordering. I've had the Chocolate Malt with Caramel, Coffee Chocolate Chip, and Ooohh..Dough! All were excellent. The line and time it takes to get the ice cream is a downside. I believe the wait time for the ice cream will decrease once the hype of this new location goes down, and as the weather gets colder. On our first visit we waited about 5 minutes for our order, but we waited about 20 minutes on our most recent visit. The ice cream is pretty expensive. I fully removed a star because I think it's silly that you can't order 2 flavors in a size small cup. The size small cup serves 2.5 scoops of ice cream, but you're only allowed one flavor. You have to order at least a medium for more than one flavor. For two medium cups plus tip we were out the door $14 and change. Steep price for some ice cream!

Visited a few months back but finally had the chance to write this review. It was our first time at Handel's and we were impressed! I actually wanted a scoop of black cherry but they were sold out. Ended up with the taro which was amazing! For around $5.50 the small on a waffle cone was more than enough and such a great deal. Look at how big the ice cream scoops are in my picture. We also ordered their cookies and cream. Initially, we thought they didn't sell it, but it's under a different name, "vanilla made with Oreo". The employees were friendly and welcoming and asked us if we wanted to sample anything when we got up to the counter. Unlike a traditional ice cream parlor, you can't see what the ice cream looks like at the front counter. All the ice cream are stored in rows of freezers behind the counter. They have the production down and will go to the "back" to scoop samples or your ice cream selections. The shop was clean and bright. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in the Reno area, hopefully, to try their black cherry.

Stopped by for ice cream and though it was a bit busy the lineover fast. We ordered a rocky road in a waffle bowl and a blueberry cobbler in a chocolate cone and they were delicious. The ice cream was rich and creamy and seemed freshly made and the cost was comparable if not cheaper than some other parlors in the area. Overall a great experience and we are likely to be back to try some more flavors!

I'm so glad there is a Handel's in Reno now! I've been to a few different locations while in California in Arizona and love the long list of flavors offered at Handel's. The ice cream at the Reno location is just as good as it is at every other location I've been to. The employees are all very nice and always willing to let me try any flavor I want to try, but for some reason it takes a really long time to get your ice cream, even when the store isn't very busy. If you have the time and are willing to wait (and the line isn't too long), Handel's is definitely worth a try!

This place was a lot of fun. Staff was great, ice cream was great. Lots of good flavors. I think they could use more employees.

The ice cream here was very creamy and flavorful! My friend and I ordered two small bowls. One with cinnamon roll ice cream and the other with horchata. Both of these were a good size and yummy, but the cinnamon roll (cake batter with a cinnamon sugar drizzle) was exceptionally good! There was about a 10-15 minute wait to order our ice cream, but once we did, we got items right away. This restaurant is in a great location, and easy to get to. I'm excited to try more flavors when I'm nearby!

8/29/2024-stopped by before and grand opening line was insane.. We decided to give it a second chance and the line wasn't too bad. Walk up window currently not available. Staff was very enthusiastic and friendly. I am so happy they are here! Now I don't have to get my fix and drive to Elk Grove! Decided on the sampler for the value..

8/29/24 Grand Opening Wow so awesome Handles is here in South Reno. This place is so good. When we lived in Cali we would always go . So Great they up here now. What a Grand opening they had . We went in the evening and still very busy but worth it. Had the pleasure to speak with Andy the owner sooooo nice and attentive to us taking the time to talk. Even tho took a bit of time to get ice cream it was worth it. They didn't have there order side windows open this evening but thats ok, but They will be for ordering . Great selection of Ice Cream , waffle cones , waffle bowls . We all went for the 4 sampler which is perfect and great price . About $7 decent size scoops (see pic) . We had a great evening going . Plenty of indoor seating and great ambiance . Can't wait to go back . Enjoy !!!!

Wow, is this place busy! And for good reason. I was amazed at the number of flavors of ice cream they offer. I don't think there's any way to possibly try them all, but I have to give a shout out to their orange Creamsicle. It was so good. I still think about it.

Ice cream here is always good. I'm glad they opened one in town and we don't have to drive to CA. Haha! I ordered 2 of their 4 scoop sampler. Birthday cake Cotton candy Vanilla Blue monster Coffee chocolate chip Taro Strawberry cheesecake chunk Rocky road Originally I ordered strawberry sorbet but they ran out. Their service is awesome! Friendly cashier and I didn't wait too long for my order. It's pretty loud inside but hey, it's their grand opening and there's still a long line even before they close. We will come back for sure!

If there is anything to motivate me getting out of the house, it is checking out a new ice cream shoppe! Not only an ice cream shoppe in Reno, but in our beloved South Reno at that! Though I didn't make the 100 people free ice cream cut, (someone has to make a living), I quickly threw my son in the car and headed down there, right around the corner at the Shaye Summit Outdoor Mall. Happy, happy, happy. I do love me some ice cream and order the brownie, hot fudge sundae with vanilla ice cream, whip cream, and a cherry. With a long line of customers, the staff moved quickly, and spirits were high. I spoke to the owner's daughter, who is also the marketing director, and gave a shout out about our beloved Yelp Elite Community (Michael, hint, party time!) She was very nice and very interested in who we are and what we contribute to the community. Back to the ice cream... Creamy good, hot fudge was delightful and whip cream. What is not to love? Such a festive place with an ice cream shoppe feel! Nice to see everyone out and about checking out the new digs.. My son and I, who love our ice cream dates, will certainly be back.. I see a pistaccio cone with my name on it already!

Great ice cream in a friendly environment. They have so many options of flavors to choose from. The ice cream is rich in flavor. I was pleasantly surprised by the price being pretty inexpensive for an ice cream shop. Myself and husband shared a sampler which included 4 scoops of ice cream for just a little over 6 dollars.

Wow. Simply awesome handmade ice cream. Couldn't think of a place in Reno for great ice cream so I went to Yelp and woohoo this is the place.

Finally get the try this place agter hearing so much good thing about it. it's alright. Nothing is really special about this IMO. Good location though, the store is big, open kitchen so you can see how they prey the ice cream. A lot of flavors. The order line is very confusing btw. Don't think I'll come back anytime soon.

Originating from Youngstown, Ohio, first saw in Las Vegas, and now finally arriving in Reno, Nevada. Although I live across the city in the north, about a 15-minute drive away, I am willing to make the trip to this ice cream shop. Parking here is a bit awkward, so I recommend parking up the hill by Sephora and Sunglasses Hut, and then taking a nice 2-minute stroll down to the shop. This shop is known for offering many different flavors of ice cream. My favorites are tied between Blue Monster, Buckeye, and Peanut Butter Brownie. The shop serves ice cream in the lobby until 9 pm, and has a "take-out customer" booth outside that stays open until 12 am. The customer service was friendly, especially given how busy they've been since the grand opening. The ice cream flavors were spot on and delicious--not too sweet and very flavorful. Some of the ice cream textures are similar to Ben & Jerry's. Their menu is simple, but they offer so many different flavors, which satisfies my adventurous personality by giving me a reason to come back and try something new. Last but not least, I want to say I'm very happy this shop has arrived in Reno. Woohoo!

Love their 4 scoop samplers! You can taste 4 flavors for just 7$. Pretty cheap but the ice cream tastes great. They even have dogsters for ur fur babies. It gets busy during weekend though like theres long lines and all the tables are full.

What's with all the hype? Everything! If you haven't been to Handel's yet, what are you waiting for? We went here tonight with a line out the door and it became quickly apparent why.. We watched as these incredible ice cream creations passed by us one by one. The first was a banana split and boy, was I waxing nostalgic for Leatherby's and Swenson's. These weren't the biggest I had ever seen but they were nothing to sneeze at. Mile high cones carefully stacked with scoops of varying sizes, sundaes that were impossibly large for the tiny bowl that somehow held them...if I was having trouble deciding between flavors, now I was wondering if I could eat a banana split in 20 minutes (the time we had between ordering and our movie starting). I settled on the four scoop sampler for $6.75, not realizing at this point that those cones and sundaes were "small" but allowing me to choose four flavors instead of making the impossible choice of one flavor. I got Chocolate Raspberry Truffle, Coffee Chocolate Chip, Ooohh...Dough and Midnight Madness. They were all equally incredible and that they are homemade is evident from the first taste. Coffee is my favorite in general but this is another level. This has a strong Coffee flavor with a quality chocolate chip. Every flavor popped. These were not "sampler size" scoops but nicely formed full size scoops that I would *not* finish before the movie. My friends each got a "small" and each little bowl towered with creamy goodness. We had to get boxes and lids and we may or may not have finished them during the movie. The alternative...tossing the rest, was *never* an option. So, make the drive and check this place out! There is no creamery in the area that can beat the flavor, price and quality we enjoyed. I'll be making the 30 minute drive again to return, sooner rather than later!
