Handel's Homemade Ice Cream

Handel's makes great ice cream, period. Not only are the flavors often very interesting but they do them very well and all ice cream is made in-house. We discovered them in Long Beach and were leary because they are a chain and most chain ice cream isn't great, but when we found out they make their own onsite, we gave them a try and are glad we did. So, we are thrilled that Handel's is now in Renoux, which was an ice cream desert there for a while. During our first visit, we tried a dozen flavors between us all and they were all great. And yes, there is often a line, but it always moves fast and is always worth it.

Yummy ice cream shop with many many different flavors of ice cream. They may have gotten my order wrong but it was fine because the dark chocolate flavor is delicious. If I lived closer I would come here all the time.

Excellent ice cream with no shortage of flavors and generous portions. (The pictures are all small dishes.) My husband's favorites: Black Cherry (because of the big cherry chunks 🍒 and Green Apple Ice (with a drizzle.of caramel added). My favorites: Butter Pecan (sweet caramel ripple balances so well with the slightly salty WHOLE pecans) and Midnight Maddness (dark chocolate and peanut butter). My oldest daughter swears by the Ube and Green Tea. Youngest daughter is addicted to the Chocolate Raspberry Truffle (must admit that this is incredibly good). My youngest craves the Blue Monster and Blue Moon. Staff is friendly and eager to please patrons, even the "Karens" that have been there when I was present were treated EXTREMELY well. (I would ban them, but that's just me.) The waits can be a little lengthy when busy, but their staff hustles.

This is the best ice cream in Reno hands down. Doesn’t matter what flavor you get. The portions are also huge. The pictures below are a size small. You won’t find better in northern Nevada.

Grew up back east n remember goin 2 this ice cream parlor as a kid, didn't realize we had um here n Reno. Super busy (Fri-yeah night) but so worth any wait. Great selection, quality product n pretty much any ice cream ta could want! Originally from Youngstown OH, but I remembered them from Jersey n So. Philly. Very kewl 2 have the out here. Highly recommended

Great ice cream, great staff. We haven't been back in almost a year bec they quit selling our two favorite flavors, but it was good while it lasted. Cold Stone is more reliable.

Super-smooth and very rich. They are not kidding about the enormous portions. Even a small should be split between two or three people. But you won’t want to.

Holy cow! I'm a bit late on the Handel's Ice Cream train. DELICIOUS. I'll be the first to admit that I'm a cold stone junkie but I can say, a junkie no more. Handel's is amazing. You can taste the actual ingredients used. The flavors are incredible, fresh and abundant. Handel's has spoiled me for anything else.

I spend way too much money here. My freezer typically has 2-3 quarts in it at all times. My favorite is the Buckeye, though lately there's been way too much chocolate syrup in it. I'm talking pools of it where that's the only thing on my spoon. Unfortunately that overpowers the ah-mazing peanut butter ice cream. When it's busy parking can be challenging out front and the lines can be long. Highly recommend ordering ahead during peak summer times.

We took the grandchildren to the movies and then went here for ice cream. Was happy to see there is a good amount of indoor seating since it was raining outside. I am giving them four stars after trying to decide if I should give three stars. The Menu board is quite hard to read for kids and that should change or have an additional paper menu that they can hold and read. Because of this, both kids ordered ordinary flavors - chocolate and strawberry - as they were overwhelmed with the selection with descriptions. And they are 11 and 13 yrs old. After we sat to eat they realized there were some awesome flavors to try if they could have read it all since the girl at the counter was waiting and a line was forming. I really suggest making the selection process easier for kids. The place seemed clean and light. So we were happy with the windows and the brightness (except the sun was shining on the menu board). My husbands family used to own a homemade ice cream shop in California when he was a kids and he learned as a teen to make all kinds of flavors and how good ice cream is made. Rich solid ice cream is made with cream and it does not melt as fast. The ice cream we were served here had more of a milk texture, thin and not heavy at all. While the taste was good, it lacked the solids to make it filling. I can compare this ice cream to store brand as opposed to Tillimook or Hagen Daz. Prices were comparable to other shops and amounts were generous.

The scoops are very large as other reviewers have mentioned. I got a small scoop and it was quite good. Next time I want to share the 4 scoop sampler to try more and it also seems like a good deal. I went at a time where there were not that many people. The service was fine. I think I'm more used to the ice cream being scooped and handed to you so paying and going to sit down and wait was different. The kids had fun reaching to see how many ice cream tall they could get. The setting is fine but not any special or quirky about the interior. It is clean though which is nice.

I've been hearing nothing but good things about this place and now I see why. I love that. They have walk up windows since we had our dog with us. Staff was very friendly. I love that they have a dog treat here too, which was Lurch approved. So many wonderful flavors to pick from in ways to pick it, in a cup in a cone a shake, and everything was awesome. Super cool that they have a permanent book exchange right next-door. We were so into watching lurch enjoy his that we forgot to take pictures of ours, but you'll just have to believe us. It was delicious.

I believe I got the monkey business in a small which is still a lot of ice cream. Probably my favorite ice cream place around the area. They have a lot of flavors to choose from. You can also get it as milkshakes too.

Handel's Ice Cream is always a win--super creamy, rich flavors, and plenty of options to keep everyone happy. It's the perfect stop for a sweet treat after a long day. Bonus points for having dog friendly treats. Staff is friendly. New menu makes it so easy to decide.

This is a great little ice cream shop! Service is very quick. If you're looking for something in the area to go out and get for that sweet tooth this is the place you need to stop. Don't ask questions just go.

While in the Sparks/Reno area craving some good ice cream, I found Handel's on Yelp. This spot was super casual and clean with friendly employees. Handel's boasts over 100 flavors of homemade ice cream and the scoops are good sized! Milk shakes, sherbets, ices, vegan options with delicious sorbets and much more. If you have dietary restrictions/allergies check the menu on that particular day- Handel's offers flavor rotations meaning new flavors/options will be in stock on any given day. *National Geographic named Handel's the "#1 ice cream on the planet" in its 10 Best of Everything book! *Offering indoor & outdoor seating. I'd definitely return to this location again.

Went in and ordered a few pints of ice cream. They really pack in a lot of ice cream in that pint. A little pricey, but tastes really good. Employees are very nice and helpful. Place is busy even in the winter. 5 stars!!!

This place always has great, friendly service, it's clean, quaint and it smells great. I personally find a lot of the flavors way too sweet for me, but you can't fault their creativity or abundant use of top quality ingredients. This place deserves an A+ Prices are so fair. My personal favorite here is an old fashioned root beer freeze

Free taste testing. I tried chocolate which is usually my go to. Had a bitter taste to me. So went a different direction. Military are welcome here to get discounts. I believe they said it was 10% The 2 small bowls cost a little over $10. Worth it for a sweet treat. Really nice and friendly staff

Staff are very friendly, the choices are endless, and it has an old school ice cream parlor feel. A small is still a lot of ice cream and we thoroughly enjoyed our choices. We will be back soon!

Ummmm YUMMMM Tried for the first time after a movie and was so impressed. It was a Tuesday and freaking PACKED that's how you know it's good. I got a medium size cone and at first I thought it was kinda pricy but when I got my ice cream.... Omg it was huge! Could have easily gotten a small. I got banana cream pie and caramel latte and they were both soooo good. The texture? Immaculate. The flavor? Absolutely delicious. So creamy so good. I ended up getting both flavors as pints to take home.

Handel's Homemade Ice Cream is my go-to sweet spot in Reno! The whole crew here is made up of upbeat, friendly young adults who keep the line moving and the orders coming out fast. They are super efficient, even when it's packed with long lines out the door. The location is perfect too. They are right next to Cinemark Theaters and BJ's Brewery. Dinner, a movie, and then Handel's for dessert? That's basically a perfect night out. Now for the good stuff: the ice cream. I usually go large with a cone so big you need two hands to hold it (zero regrets). Sometimes I'll mix it up with their 4-scoop sampler when I can't decide. After lots of "research," my ride-or-die flavors are Pineapple Upside Down Cake and Vanilla Cherry. I've also tried Taro, Strawberry, Banana Cream Pie, and Black Cherry and honestly, it's the kind of ice cream that makes you want to skip dinner just to save room. I do! Handel's is one of those places where you'll always leave smiling (and maybe a little sticky). Creamy, fun, and downright addictive. It is definitely a Reno gem for dessert lovers!

Super reasonable pricing with great quality and value. You get three scoops with any size and it's packed! There are kids cones but it's literally I feel like the same size of how much ice cream as a regular small size. We all couldn't finish it. The only thing that stinks is that you have to pick only one flavor for the three scoops if u choose any small sizes, you can't pick different flavors unless u go to medium or large sizes and then u can do two flavors. It's Just a lot of ice cream lol But u can prolly ask for a medium or large and then just ask for an extra cup to share with someone else for more value and different flavors for your buck. The flavors I recommend are the banana cream pie and the taro! The pistachio and the birthday cake was not one of my faves. The Ice cream is very flavorful and creamy!! I'd go again! It's conveniently located in the middle of the outdoor mall right next to Ulta so you can walk around to burn off those calories if you want and go shopping. Plenty of parking!

Great ice cream with TONS of flavor options, almost too many to even decide. We spent quite a bit of time trying to choose 8 different flavors and the cashier was extremely patient and friendly the entire time. Ambiance here is pretty great from outside, can take in the beautiful views of Mt. Rose while grubbing down on ice cream. Will always continue to return, $6 for 4 scoops of ice cream is kinda unreal. At other places you'd be paying $15+ for that. Love it!

So many flavors and interesting choices. They have a sampler of 4 choices and a great value! Their milk shakes are awesome too! The place was crowded with a long line. Friendly employees & appear to enjoy their job! We will be back!

We love Handels! They have a handout of gluten free ice cream options that you can look through. Great indoor/outdoor area. We like to go at least once a month for a yummy treat. Everyone working is always very friendly which is sometimes hard to fine with the younger crowd. Shakes are also delicious. 10/10.

Great find for a fun family treat! Ice cream was great! I preferred the shake to the soft-serve hurricane. It was busy, but the service was still fast. The scoops tall wall painting is perfect for a quick photo with the family. Definitely worth a visit, and memorable, will take out next out of town guests.

I stopped in on a random winter weeknight and even then, there was a small line almost out the door. I like to consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of mint chocolate chip ice cream in particular. Sometimes, the mint becomes overwhelming or the chocolate chip ratio is sparse. Not at Handel's! The first lick revealed a perfectly balanced concoction of creaminess and minty-ness with semi-sweet chocolate bits distributed so you get at least one with each mouthful. The waffle cone held up to the generous scoops and packed a vanilla flavored crunch. The ice creamery was well lit, very clean and brightly decorated. The ambiance was definitely like an old fashioned ice cream parlor of years gone by.

We heard so many good things about it so we thought we should go and look. I like it when people see me and acknowledge me as soon as I get there, but this people ignored me for a good three minutes. There was a line as they were busy, but I guess it's the way it is with places like this. They have a sinuses we never skimp, but I thought the balls of ice cream would rather small. I didn't think the flavors were that unique. Less good ice cream, and my favorite is the Taro. We had the chocolate, pistachio, black, cherry, and blueberry cobbler. If I were you, I would order the sampler because then you don't notice that the balls are small.

This is a super cute ice cream shop with a nostalgic old-timey feel to it. The sheer amount of options is mind boggling...We got the blue monster (which is basically blue oreo ice cream) & butter pecan/salted caramel. All the flavors were delicious. Also, this a cute area to walk around!

We absolutely love the sampler! It's enough ice cream for 2 adults and a kiddo. We aren't huge on sugar so but whenever we do the sampler gives us the opportunity to try a little bit of everything for a decent price. Service is fast and friendly . You can sit inside our outside. We usually enjoy ours to go. Will be coming back :)

Also available - Vegan/sorbets, sherberts, icees, sundaes, hurricanes, shakes, handel pops, etc. Atmosphere - Open 7 days a week. Winter/holiday hours are from 11am or noon until 9pm or 10pm; see pictures or their website. Normal business hours are 11am to 10pm daily. Service - Good; keep in mind they are still a very new business. So please be patient. Price - $11.75 a quart. Expensive, but that is the cost for quality. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success here since August of 2024, to your company's success since 1945, and with your 120+ locations.

Ever since wally world no longer carries a black cherry ice cream, I had to try Handel's version. I still think wally worlds version was better but it probably had more artificial sugars. The lines may seem long but ignore it because they have googobs of people servicing you inside and at one window servicing people in the courtyard. Service is quick since they have an abundance of ice cream scoopers manning the rolls of ice cream ice boxes behind the counter, there was at least ten to twelve workers just scooping the ice cream behind the counter in a open setting. The ice cream I had was okay, not blow me off my feet, but not bad. I did sample their chocolate, I guess I have a preference for another brand which is only available in southern nevada and some of the other states below nevada. I didn't get to try the coffee flavour because none was available that day. I guess I need to make another trip to vegas for some great chocolate ice cream.

I've known Handel's for awhile as it was always a place I had to get when I went to Torrance, CA to see my family. It was just a must for me every single time. So.. when I found out Reno was getting one, I was over the moon about it and I'm glad my love for Handel's is now shared around Northern NV. I finally stopped by today while my husband and I were on our monthly date of trying different food places. So Handel's was one of those places we wanted to stop by for sure. The place was pretty busy with the outdoor ordering and was busy as well inside of the shop, but the line went pretty quick. I was feeling the coffee chocolate chip and my husband wanted to try the Taro (Ube) flavor. As I always remembered Handel's being: the ice cream is just soooo good. It's creamy, smooth, and to me, the ice cream just taste like it was freshly made. We ordered our ice cream on a 'small' waffle cone, but it was still a lot for a 'small' , we were so full for the rest of the day. Handel's has a ton of flavors to choose from and you have the option to do the sample 4 ice creams which I did not know you can do. I have and always will love Handel's and it being in Reno now is just such a win for us as to simply explain: this is REALLY good ice cream. I mean.. I don't have to wait till the next time I'm in Southern California to get their ice cream anymore. My husband and I will have to be back with our son next time and to grab a pint of ice cream to bring home.

We've back a few times and it's been great each time. Tasty flavors and malts and great hot fudge sundaes. Service is quick if it's not too busy and overall a good value. I love any chocolate flavor they have going on!

I have to be honest and say after about three times of trying Handel's, I'd rather buy my own carton of Tillamook ice cream and enjoy it at home. There's something about the ice cream that I'm not fully attracted to, I think it's the texture. Sometimes it's very very thick. I will also say that the last two times the customer service has been terrible. To me, it doesn't feel exactly friendly or inviting, the lights are bright, and the window for outside guests is rarely open.

Great quality ice cream, nice people and great selection. Clean vibe too. The taro flavor is great!

Creamy, flavorful, delicious ice cream! I love the creativity in all of handels flavors. The horchata is a beautiful blend of sweet and cinnamon. The midnight dark chocolate ice cream was so luscious and the peanut butter cups and pretzel bits were perfectly integrated. Every time I come to handels I fall further in love with their fun and unique flavors! Line was long but moved super quickly!

Located inside the Summit Mall renamed the Shayden Summit Mall. Most of my friends still know it as Summit Mall. On the night that we went, there was a huge line. The four-flavor sampler is reasonably priced. They have a huge variety of flavors such as chocolate orange, coffee chocolate chip, and horchata. The ice cream is creamy, smooth, and decadent. The ice cream was delicious. We all got different flavors so we could try a variety of flavors. Some of the flavors were a bit too sweet for me. My favorite was the coffee. The line was huge and we placed our orders at the counter and then sat down to wait for our orders to come up. The staff seemed overwhelmed. There were a few mistakes made with some orders. But, mistakes were fixed with a smile and kindness. While it was extremely, busy and the business was still trying to work out some kinks we received our order in a reasonable amount of time. You can taste the quality of the ingredients. They don't skimp on flavor.

Went during a rainstorm thinking it might not be as busy but it was still packed! Line went pretty fast though. A lot of selections but as soon as I saw tin Lizzie (butterscotch ripple ice cream with toffee bits) was so excited. However they were out of it so ordered lemon with graham cracker pieces-pretty good but I was still so disappointed as butterscotch ripple is so hard to find but my favorite. Got a quart of birthday cake ice cream for grandkids which they loved. Would probably only get takeaway in the future as it's so crowded. Service was very friendly.

The ice cream here is fantastic and there are so many flavors to choose from! The texture is super creamy and they also are very generous with serving sizes. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because my most recent visit the service wasn't great, the man in the window was trying to rush us along even though there was nobody else in line. Other times the service has been very good.

Loved it! I am so happy Handel's is here in Reno, NV. I used to go here all the time back when I lived in Las Vegas. I got the four-scoop sampler with black cherry, peach, midnight madness, and birthday cake. All were amazing! They have so many flavors and they're all fantastic! Very good opportunity to try something new every time! Service was also great too. The young lady who took my order, Savi, was incredibly pleasant and genuine. She had great recommendations for me to try on a future visit! Definitely recommend for someone new to Reno. 100%

When you walk into the ice cream shop you can see the ice cream production behind the counter. There are rows and rows of ice cream flavors. We stopped by after a movie at summit mall century theater. I enjoyed the cherry ice cream in a waffle cone, my partner enjoyed the salted Carmel truffle in a dish. Our friends had Banana Cream Pie in a regular cone and chocolate carmel in a dish. All were delicious. There open from 12-10pm

Holy cow that's good ice cream!!! Easy going staff, helpful and super willing to provide samples to help us make our decision!

Visited a few months back but finally had the chance to write this review. It was our first time at Handel's and we were impressed! I actually wanted a scoop of black cherry but they were sold out. Ended up with the taro which was amazing! For around $5.50 the small on a waffle cone was more than enough and such a great deal. Look at how big the ice cream scoops are in my picture. We also ordered their cookies and cream. Initially, we thought they didn't sell it, but it's under a different name, "vanilla made with Oreo". The employees were friendly and welcoming and asked us if we wanted to sample anything when we got up to the counter. Unlike a traditional ice cream parlor, you can't see what the ice cream looks like at the front counter. All the ice cream are stored in rows of freezers behind the counter. They have the production down and will go to the "back" to scoop samples or your ice cream selections. The shop was clean and bright. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in the Reno area, hopefully, to try their black cherry.

Oh my god the caramel ice cream is like no other. Sampled a few but their caramel pretzel crunch was so good! I got it with cookie dough because it is pretty rich. But I dream about it still... haha Super neat and clean shop with some tables to enjoy your ice cream at. It's located in a cute shopping center with parking to the side and in front. There was a like that when quickly and the teenagers working there were sweet and helpful.

South Reno finally gets an ice cream place that isn't fro-yo! So excited to have this ice cream shop in our neck of the woods. Great location at the Summit Mall! Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating as well, with a window to order from outside. I've been here twice now and both times were great experiences. I love how many unique flavors there are - and great that they let you try a flavor before ordering. I've had the Chocolate Malt with Caramel, Coffee Chocolate Chip, and Ooohh..Dough! All were excellent. The line and time it takes to get the ice cream is a downside. I believe the wait time for the ice cream will decrease once the hype of this new location goes down, and as the weather gets colder. On our first visit we waited about 5 minutes for our order, but we waited about 20 minutes on our most recent visit. The ice cream is pretty expensive. I fully removed a star because I think it's silly that you can't order 2 flavors in a size small cup. The size small cup serves 2.5 scoops of ice cream, but you're only allowed one flavor. You have to order at least a medium for more than one flavor. For two medium cups plus tip we were out the door $14 and change. Steep price for some ice cream!

The ice cream here was very creamy and flavorful! My friend and I ordered two small bowls. One with cinnamon roll ice cream and the other with horchata. Both of these were a good size and yummy, but the cinnamon roll (cake batter with a cinnamon sugar drizzle) was exceptionally good! There was about a 10-15 minute wait to order our ice cream, but once we did, we got items right away. This restaurant is in a great location, and easy to get to. I'm excited to try more flavors when I'm nearby!

My kid and I stopped in here today since he was wanting ice cream. We walked inside and there was a long line. I asked him he wanted to go somewhere else or wait in line. He wanted to wait in line. The line moved well considering it was long. They only had 2 registers available. We ordered 2 short vanilla cake cones. Our order was short and simple and the lady behind the counter was nice. We picked up our cones a few minutes later and ate outside since there was no place to eat inside. My kid enjoyed his ice cream. To me, the ice cream was good. No complaints on the ice cream but it tasted just like any other ice cream. Nothing special. Maybe I'll stop by again another day and try something else but I don't think it's worth the wait. If I happen to walk in next time and there's a long line, I'm turning right back around. Of course, the only reason I stopped in there was because the kid wanted ice cream. Baskin Robbin's come back!!

8/29/2024-stopped by before and grand opening line was insane.. We decided to give it a second chance and the line wasn't too bad. Walk up window currently not available. Staff was very enthusiastic and friendly. I am so happy they are here! Now I don't have to get my fix and drive to Elk Grove! Decided on the sampler for the value..

Handel's is my go-to for amazing homemade ice cream. The flavors are always creative and unique, and the portions (and toppings) are super generous--every visit feels like a treat.

8/29/24 Grand Opening Wow so awesome Handles is here in South Reno. This place is so good. When we lived in Cali we would always go . So Great they up here now. What a Grand opening they had . We went in the evening and still very busy but worth it. Had the pleasure to speak with Andy the owner sooooo nice and attentive to us taking the time to talk. Even tho took a bit of time to get ice cream it was worth it. They didn't have there order side windows open this evening but thats ok, but They will be for ordering . Great selection of Ice Cream , waffle cones , waffle bowls . We all went for the 4 sampler which is perfect and great price . About $7 decent size scoops (see pic) . We had a great evening going . Plenty of indoor seating and great ambiance . Can't wait to go back . Enjoy !!!!

First trip to Handels and my review is mixed. The line was long but pretty organized and it moved pretty fast. Big menu with lots of different, fun flavors. And the ice cream was pretty good. You could taste that its made on site. The portion thing is pretty weird and feels like a forced upsale. We had a 2 year old with us and tried to order one scoop. We were told 2 1/2 was minimum. Kinda dumb. Then I ordered a waffle cone and asked for 2 scoops. We were told 3 1/2 was minimum. Again, kinda dumb. We paid around $15 for the two items which I thought was fair considering we had to get so much. Probably go again. But maybe not since a Cold Stone is opening a little closer.

Ice cream here is always good. I'm glad they opened one in town and we don't have to drive to CA. Haha! I ordered 2 of their 4 scoop sampler. Birthday cake Cotton candy Vanilla Blue monster Coffee chocolate chip Taro Strawberry cheesecake chunk Rocky road Originally I ordered strawberry sorbet but they ran out. Their service is awesome! Friendly cashier and I didn't wait too long for my order. It's pretty loud inside but hey, it's their grand opening and there's still a long line even before they close. We will come back for sure!
