The 12 Best New Restaurants in Baltimore | Eater

"Hall of Fame mountain biker Marla Streb and her husband Mark Fitzgerald opened this amalgamation of a bike shop, coffee counter, pizza-and-sandwich shop, and craft beer-and-cocktail bar after deciding they liked all of those things equally. And given the response, they’re not alone. In the summer you’ll find the casual, open-air space filled with bikers taking a break for a cold beer and wood-fired pizza, while in the winter it’s an enclosed escape from the elements with big burritos and time to eye up your next bike purchase." - Ryan Detter

We stopped in for dinner. This is the second time for us. No surprise that the food was outstanding. It was busy and the two young servers did a fantastic job working together checking on tables. The lasagna and sausage bake dinners were a decent size portion. The beer is Boxcar Brewing. Very good selection. The food was delicious and if you are hungry afterwards, then you might have worms....go see a doctor. Definitely a must to try here.

Google
Local restaurant in Saxonburg PA with delicious food, great service, and a relaxed atmosphere. Owner is friendly and attentive. Fun events on certain nights like bar Bingo and karaoke that we love to attend. Prices are reasonable. Can become extremely busy especially on event nights, so parking can be a little tight. Tomato basil soup is always a good to, so delicious! Have been coming to the Handlebar since it opened, and have enjoyed watching it grow! One of my favorite restaurants!

Google
Took a motorcycle ride a few weeks ago and passed this cute place so we decided to stop for dinner. Sara was fantastic and helpful with choices.

I’ve eaten here 3-4 times. The food has always been good and the service was fast! If you go on a Friday or Saturday night parking gets a little cramped and on Friday they have karaoke with some pretty good local singers! Strombolis are my favorite and their house made chips are freakin’ awesome and HUGE! See photos!

Google
Delicious deep dish pizza. The best I've had in Pittsburgh. The restaurant itself is fairly small, and there is an entire section of the building that's dedicated to video entertainment, which I found odd. They serve alcohol, but the bar is for service only. There is no bar seating.

Google
I may not fully grasp the concept of the restaurant, I must say the 𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 is quite charming and cute. ✨The décor has a unique vibe. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, which added to the overall positive experience.👏 𝙃𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧, I was a bit let down by the food. 🍴 The meatballs were just average—nothing that stood out. And 🍕the pizza? Not great 😞. It was way too oily, and honestly, it made it hard to enjoy. The dough didn’t have much flavor, and the slices were pretty dry. it was the worst pizza I've had since moving to Pittsburgh. 👉I understand that tastes can vary, and perhaps this is a normal experience for others, but I wanted to share my honest perspective as a consumer. Thank you for taking the time to read my review!🙋‍♀️

Google
We LOVE The Handlebar! Linda and her crew are fabulous! We love the food (the homemade chips are 💯) but we come for the BINGO! 🤣🤣🤣

Google
Yummy yummy yummy! I got the Chopped Salad and pepperoni roll. Both were to die for! Tiffany was a great server and the atmosphere was perfect. We have been wanting to come here for quite some time and I'm so glad we finally made it. We will be back!

Yelp
The food is awesome. A hidden gem. Highly recommend. Deep dish pizza, chopped salad is a mazing.

Yelp
Nice spot! Stopped in for lunch with my gal pal Kat...her pick, and it was a good one. Nice looking place, clean and well laid out...albeit a bit out of the way in the sticks. The server was really nice, and the garlic knots and white pizza we ordered (with anchovies - yum!) were both really tasty! The bill was quite reasonable, and they do offer a military discount! An excellent spot to try! Good stuff here!

Yelp
Arrived when business opened..greeted, seated and drink order taken while we perused the menu....12" thin cut White Pizza with anchovies and Garlic Knots....laid back atmosphere...low volume music...place filled up quickly...tin ceiling tiles...red bulbs...red bicycles....pizza was awesome... no skimping on the anchovies...yum...one of the best around...garlic knots quite tasty also....

Cherie L.

Yelp
We so enjoyed our visit here. Uniquely bicycle, scooter themed. We've been searching for a Chicago Deep Dish like we had in Florida and we finally found it. It was so good!!! Can't wait to go back and try the other menu items. Oh, the potato chips were amazing too!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stopped here after a Butler adventure. We went for a drive and went for a walk in a park in the snow. We found this gem when hunger hit. It is so cute inside and even has an outdoor area to sit in the summertime. We had a couple beers along with a provolone wheel, some delicious wedding soup and the Hawaiian pizza. The wedding soup was loaded with veggies and protein. I highly recommend. Our server was so nice. She brought us a taste of the tomato soup to try and it was delicious and flavorful but a little too creamy for me. The place was getting crowded when we left. Looks very popular. We will definitely be back to try more variety. I heard the garlic knots are very popular as well.

Yelp
Pizza is so so. The thin pizza is not really thin and hawaiian pizza could use more pineapples. The deep dish pizza crust is too crunchy(like crackers) but the toppings were good.

Yelp
Visited recently for lunch. Fish sandwich and meatball sub ordered. Both were delicious. Service was perfect.

Yelp
Really was just not good. I got a cup of the pastina soup. The chicken was weird. Like it's precooked frozen processed chicken "breasts" that are cut up with a knife. Then I had meatballs. The texture was very soft and I couldn't really eat them. Not sure if they are made in house or not but they didn't seem like it. Really lacking that meaty taste. I was grossed out. I'll probably not come back. Nothing wowed me. The kitchen seems lazy and is cutting corners instead of cooking their own chicken breasts for their soups etc. I almost got a salad but I'm kind of glad I didn't. Who knows what mystery meat would've been on there. The place just felt a little grimy too which I'd look past if the food was worth it...totally not. Disappointed.

Yelp
4.5 stars! If you're looking for pizza in the Saxonburg area, look no further. Have visited and ordered takeout many times, failed to write a review until now... Most recently, a new-house painting party enjoyed: the Loaded Stromboli, Supreme, and pepperoni pizzas. Nice beer selection, too. Friendly staff, all around great neighborhood spot.

Keith E.

Yelp
Crust on both pizzas was really good. Both sauces were ok seemed to have a medicinie flavor. Toppings are expensive at $4.24 each. But seemed to be fresh and a decent quality. Over all value of $139.00+ order for a sub and two pizzas seems a bit steep for what we got. The older woman seemed nice and was helpful. Two boys in the back were laughing about what who knows. The one girl behind the counter had the nerve to comment to my daughter and ask, "what no tip?" As my daughter was walking away. She was confronted and corrected by the older woman, I assume the owner. That lost my business there forever. We picked up the order, a 25 minute drive each way. This place was recommended to us by two substantial people within the community. Not impressed.

Denise S.

Yelp
I normally order pizza, but this time I ordered the steak salad. To start with, it was a plate of fries with 10 leaves of lettuce (3 spinach leaves, 3 arugula leaves, 3 lettuce leaves and a small romaine piece) on the bottom. The steak was NOT steak, it was top of round (roast beef) and the butter knife couldn't cut through it. And fries were piled on top. It was the worst salad I've had in a long time.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Solid Chicago pizza. Interior needs updating. Service was decent, however our server they told us they didn't have lemonade but when I asked the bartender (who was also the cook) he got me one.

Charles P.

Yelp
Moved to Pittsburgh area 3 years ago. I have been looking for authentic Chicago style pizza since getting here. I found it at The Handlebar Cafe!! It is excellent!!!

Travis W.

Yelp
Food. Past 2 times it wasn't any good considering I got a local business ordering there. Pizzas been so tough and over done like chewing cardboard and all I get is sorry. Done pizza 15years and consistency is the key and it's not close lately. Won't be back or the business
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
Food was good the Chicago style is good that's what we had. Service was very slow there was one server not ours that was running around doing everything I don't think she could have possibly done more.
google avatar

Greta R.

Yelp
Great food and service. This is the perfect "honey I don't feel like cooking tonight" place to go. The zucchini planks are not to be missed. So fresh you would think they grab a zucchini out of the garden when you order. Pizza is another favorite of ours.
google avatar

Lindsey K.

Yelp
Handlebar Cafe has yummy pizza. It's a great atmosphere... the fries were soo good too.
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
I had a HUGE craving for a chicago style deep dish pizza after watching a review on one. I searched for 'deep dish butler' and got this restaurant! So worth the roughly 30 minute drive. Not only was the deep dish incredible, the garlic knots were the best I've ever had. I got my food to go, but the inside was very cute! Just pay attention to where you pull into the parking lot... they have a HUGE sign that says 'do not enter' but as I was leaving someone tried pulling in and near missed running right into me.
google avatar

H. Elwood G.

Yelp
Service was fine. Food: frozen precooked chicken had that briny prepared bounce and extreme saltiness, chopped salad was dressed with a jug of sweet Vidalia onion dressing / slaw dressing. Kinda gross. Deep dish was OK but toppings were highway robbery. We got 2 beers, 2 waters, 1 Half chopped salad, 1 full chicken salad, medium 9 inch deep dish with onions, sausage gp. 72 buckaroo. Deep dish used slices gp and onion, not chunky like authentic recipes, cost 28 dollars. Hope owners will hone in on some of the oddball ingredients and really own their ish

Mo S.

Yelp
We live 5 mins away, got food to go and our "baked" sandwiches had literally cold meat on them. Food I wouldn't serve a starving dog. Save your money.
google avatar

Yelp
Great local beers, wines, cocktails, AMAZING Chicago Deep dish pizza! Wow! Definitely going back for more! Linda, the owner, waited on us at the bar. She's delightful! Check it out!

Yelp
Knew it was going to happen. I hav few been on a streak with finding local and unique restaurants. The Handlebar Cafe however broke my streak. Great ambiance and the staff seemed extremely busy. Had two or three stop and bring our menu but had a hard time getting our order taken. Lots of local beers but unfortunately they were all warm. Finally walked to the cooler to find my own. And the pizza, which was supposed to be their claim to fame was just okay. Their Chicago Deep Dish was mediocre at best. My recommendation would be to pass on the Handlebar.

Chuck P.

Yelp
We had a deep dish Pizza, plain, no toppings. Reminded me of deep dish I tried in Chicago. Worth a try.

Tom G.

Yelp
This place is amazing, we go there with friends on Thursday evenings for dinner and free bingo. The food is very good, great deep dish pizza, great loaded fries, the fish sandwich is awesome. The rolled lasagna is so good and can feed two. They offer a 20% discount for veterans and will give another4% if you pay with cash. The only thing as good as the food is the service! They are so nice and helpful with anything we've ever needed. It's become a weekly event.

Morgan R.

Yelp
Our favorite local restaurant! Highly recommend the Chicago deep dish pizzas - completely authentic and reasonably priced. The chicken Parmesan is also a great alternative. They also have free bingo on Thursdays!
google avatar

Alex H.

Yelp
Friendly service and delicious pizza! Gem of a restaurant with fun decor, delicious meatballs, and a gelato stan
google avatar

Yelp
I'm shocked to tell you - this place hit all the marks. It's off in a random place outside of Pittsburgh where I didn't think we would find great food but wow did this place come through. The service was so friendly and kind. Dogs happily allowed and welcomed at their outdoor seating. which we love :) Onto the food - the garlic knots were a great sign of the pizza to come... so light and buttery and garlicky. The sauce is awesome. Eat the sauce. Which led us to get a Chicago deep dish. I've rarely had a good one outside Chicago and this one definitely was great. The kids got small pizzas made just to their liking and those were raves about too. Oh and their wine list is local and had some unique berry wines on it - the raspberry was sweet but yummy and would be great over ice cream . Go here. They were nice and the food was yummy.

Yelp
Best Pizza I've had in a long time! Great hole in the wall place we ran into on our travels. Server Brooke was attentive and awesome!

Justin T.

Yelp
Ordered one pasta dinner for delivery, 30 bucks with tip.. can't even remember the soup, bread wet and cold. Can't call and complain because the owner is a nut job. It's a shame.

Brian B.

Yelp
Drove by this place on the way to a baseball tournament, looked nice from the outside. Cozy interior and nice atmosphere for a tavern. We had a house salad with ranch, garlic knots, and a large pizza with pepperoni, onions, green peppers and banana peppers. Everything was delicious.. salad was fresh greens with homemade ranch, garlic knots were buttery and super tasty and the pizza was piping hot and delicious with crisp crust. The only thing better than the food, was our waitress Brooke who was very attentive and did a super job. Will make a note to come back when we are out this way for a tournament.

Yelp
Another amazing, hidden gem. Incredible Italian food and great service! Would highly recommend!
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
After a small mixup with the requested delivery time of our order on a busy holiday weekend, both the driver and receptionist were incredibly accommodating to make it right. We greatly appreciate the kindness and professionalism they showed- no doubt that it comes from the top! We look forward to continue supporting this local gem. The pizzas were delicious as well!

James C.

Yelp
We are new to PA and wanted to check out local restaurants. We found Handlebar Cafe online, looked at the menu, and decided to give it a try. From the moment we walked into the restaurant everything was amazing!! Great atmosphere, friendly staff, fast service, and excellent food. We have been back there multiple times and it never disappoints!! If you're anywhere near Handlebar Cafe, definitely stop in!

Leah M.

Yelp
Thatcher was our server, and he was wonderful! We really appreciated how quick and fabulous he was:) food was awesome too 10/10 the fried mushrooms were bangin

Lori R.

Yelp
I got chicken pastine soup and received wedding soup a small ham and pineapple pizza, it had bacon on it. The only part of the order they got right was the meatball sub. It was excellent!

Taylor W.

Yelp
Good pizza! And good provolone wheel would go there just for that! Soup not so good. A little pricey.
google avatar

Ronald O.

Yelp
Food was good, nothing special. I guess with the prices they charged I was expecting more gourmet/homemade food, not some frozen stuff I could get at Walmart and reheat for a fraction of the price. $25 for a meatball sub, 12 pretzel knots, and a 2 liter Pepsi delivered. Good service and fast delivery.

Nick K.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I needed to be in Saxonburg for an appointment around lunch time and found this place off the beaten path. The décor was adorable, the pizza was excellent and the server very attentive. We didn't get drinks, but their dedication to local breweries and wineries is applaudable. I strongly recommend if you are passing through.
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
We wanted to try something different and not in the city. This place did not disappoint! Great beer selection (we all had some amber ale...I forget what it was called...but it was delicious.) The wedding soup was wonderful and I'm a tough critic when it comes to wedding soup! Lots of meatballs and nice chunky carrots. The Chicago style pizza was THE BEST EVER! Piping hot, nice tang in the sauce and bursting with flavor. My only complaint...they didn't warn us ahead of time to save room for dessert. Excellent service too. We'll be back again for sure.
google avatar

Becki T.

Yelp
Don't pass this lil' cafe up. It appears to be fairly new. They're still adding the finishing touches but it's cute and uniquely decorated. We enjoyed the bicycle as the focal point - "fd" & the chalkboard border quotes were entertaining while we waited for lunch. My co-worker and I both ordered Stromboli & you won't be let down. It had the perfect butter-garlic touch & everything was pleasantly priced. Staff was attentive.
google avatar

Foodie Girl Y.

Yelp
Cute place, although it could use more thought. I can defiantly tell the owners were never in the restaurant business before. I started with the zucchini appetizer, who could screw that up? They had no flavorso I chose a different restaurant for the rest of my dinner So I gave it another try by ordering a Chicken, bacon, ranch pizza... it had no flavor, seriously, it's got bacon, how can you take the flavor out of bacon? Well they figured out how. I will probably give them one more chance, in about a year
google avatar

Hayley F.

Yelp
I love this place already! It was my first time too! It was very good! Our group had the fried zucchini, it was my first time having it, and it was delicious! I don't like onions, but my uncle loved the barbecue sauce with onion rings. If you plan to get a sub or a calzone, consider the portion size. My ham and cheese sub had a lot of ham on it. I mean I'm not complaining I love a lot of ham and it filled me up quick. The service was also very friendly and asked us for refills. I'm definitely going back when I have the chance!
google avatar

Big T.

Yelp
This was the best Italian food ever, you should eat it with your eyes and mouth and nose!!!

Lynn J.

Yelp
We love eating here!! Friendly atmosphere, absolutely great staff and the Chicago style pizza is the best!!

Siao S.

Yelp
Ordered takeout over the weekend from recommendations of friends. Very cute restaurant. Everything was yummy. Loved my chopped salad and Chicago deep dish pizza. My husband who prefers the thin crust enjoyed his pizza. I like how you can order a small personal pizza so everyone gets what they want. The zucchini planks were so yummy. Family also liked the wings. There wedding soup was filled with so many veggies! We look forward to our next visit! Thanks for the yummy food!
google avatar

Carol B.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place on our way home an estate sale. The cub appeal and the name enticed is to give it a try. We had a cup of their wedding soup. It was so packed with veggies, pasta and meatballs that it was more of a stew. It was very flavorful but I would have liked more broth. Regardlessly it was very tasty. The 4 of us ordered a deep dish pizza with ham spinach and tomato. It was also very tasty and filling. The crust was different than I have ever had. I just cant put my finger on why but it was just different It was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It almost reminded us of a wheat crust. The service was ok. Young staff that seemed inexperienced. The four of us had water but only one get a refill. I'm sure they will get better with time. The place is decorated cute with a bicycle theme and a tin ceiling. Price is affordable. I would go back again if in the area.
google avatar

Mary Kay G.

Yelp
It is very good! Loved the signature salad and our table also ordered a pizza, Chicken parmigiana, Pasta sauce was good not great....everyone enjoyed their meal. The staff were very pleasant. Would recommend.
google avatar

Kristen W.

Yelp
Great place to stop and eat not a biker bar LOL I would recommend the steak and cheese wedgie
google avatar

Tim D.

Yelp
Ordered wings and pizza for delivery, order showed up sooner than expected. They forgot to put the little plastic thing the pizza, so the cheese stuck to the lid. They offered to bring another pizza, but the cheese came right off, I said not to worry about it. Wings had a good flavor, and were nice and crispy. Pizza sauce and toppings were really good, knocking one star off because I expect a square pizza to be crispier.
