A Hand Roll Sushi Counter With an Attached Highball Bar Lands in the Heart of Old Town - Eater DC

"Handover, a bamboo-lined sushi restaurant specializing in temaki (hand rolls), moves into the old spot for fish and chips. The Handover refers to how servers will deliver temaki across a minimalist, 13-seat bar. Chef Melvin Urrutia, also of the People's Drug, has rolls packed with avocado miso, spicy tuna, hamachi, or shrimp tempura fillings. Guests fill out orders with pencils and could be in and out in as little as 30 minutes. Hot or cold sake comes in porcelain cups. There are also familiar Japanese beers like Kirin, ginger lemonade, iced green tea, and bottles of Japanese Ramune sodas. Chef specials will include seasonal items like caviar-topped California sea urchin or fish sourced from Hawaii and Japan." - Tierney Plumb

Also reviewed on Instagram @ryrythefoodie ✨️ Spontaneously walked in while passing by. I had a slice of cheese and was very pleasantly surprised by how satisfying it was, I bought another slice to go. The crust was good for folding. The semolina on the bottom was tastefully balanced. The cheese-to-sauce ratio was perfect. It was a really solid NY-style slice of pizza. I would definitely come back and already have it mind to do so during my next trip in to Old Town Alexandria. Simple pizza menu. The pies were visible right there behind the counter. No fuss. No complaints from me. Also want to note that Old Town Alexandria is generally a really LGBTQIA+ friendly area, for those travelers/foodies/etc. from elsewhere looking to travel to a queer friendly town/city. Pride flags are common, so for safety reasons, fyi, people are really friendly and welcoming and I've had great experiences here. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈❤️ 5/5 stars, Handover by the Slice: definitely recommended 🌟

Tucked away in an unassuming corner, Handover Pizza is the kind of hole-in-the-wall spot you almost don’t want to share—because once word gets out, the line will be out the door. They serve pizza by the slice, and it surprisingly delivers. The crust comes out thin and crispy, with just the right snap when you bite in, while the toppings taste fresh and balanced without being overloaded. It’s the kind of slice that feels classic but elevated—simple, satisfying, and exactly what you hope for when you wander into a no-frills neighborhood pizza joint. A hidden gem worth stopping for.

Google
Old Town Alexandria has a brand-new destination for pizza by the slice: Handover by the Slice! It's totally impressive - there were eight pies from which to choose when I stopped by earlier today, and (I'm sorry I didn't get her name) our host described each pie, and I selected the meat-lover's slice. She popped my slice on an aluminum tray, heated it, and in the meantime, I checked out the wine and beer selections. I chose a local lager (which was outstanding!) and dove into my slice once it had been heated up. I ate most of the slice at the counter - just the right temp - didn't scald and wasn't lukewarm. The toppings were outstanding! I am so grateful for Handover - it's now possible to walk into Old Town Alexandria with less than $100 to spend and still end up with great food for four! Cheese pizza is $3.50 a slice, everything else (like the one I got) is $4.50. Beer and wine are similarly fairly priced. This is a major destination slice joint, so I’m talking to you DVM! New York-style thin, awesome tomato sauce, crisp crust that I devoured on my walk to the Metro bus stop five minutes away. Right now, it's open Sunday-Wednesday 11am-10pm; Thursday 11am-12am; Friday-Saturday 11am- 2am. If Old Town ever becomes enlighten enough to ban sidewalk scooters and encourage a local performance venue (one that can honestly compete with the awesome bands brought to King Street by the Light Horse and Murphy's), I predict that enjoying a slice from the Handover will be the crowning achievement of a less-expensive but awesome date night in Old Town. And for those of you over 21, there’s a speakeasy right upstairs! Look online for King’s Ransom: enter via the stairs from The Handover. I’ll say no more.

Google
My husband I stopped for a quick bite as we walked by and smelled the delightful aroma of freshly baked pizza. It was a great slice— nice crust that was not too thick or too thin. I had cheese and hubs had pepperoni. They have a cute bar on the top floor. My only ding is that they did not have outdoor seating, which would have been a great touch given their nice corner location.

Google
I am so happy that Old Town has a late night pizza by the slice! They were open till 1 am on Saturday and that pizza sure hit the spot. We got a couple slices of their white pizza but I will definitely be making another visit very soon and try out their other pizzas. The slice was perfect for boosting our energy as we headed down to Rock It Grill for dancing.

Google
Not sure what happened today, but I ordered a veggie slice to go. I should have checked, I had to power through the burned taste since I was hungry. Horrible

Google
I’m never eating here again! I’ve been coming to this restaurant for a few times now and I found a used BAND-AID in my pizza. I was on my last 2 bites and felt something strange and realized I was chewing on someone’s band-aid that works there.

Google
Nice space, bright, open, but narrow, and it has fashionably clever painting. Each handroll ordered was at minimum good to solid. None were outstanding nor were any not good. They were right in the middle, overall I hoped for a tad more here. While there were perhaps six others present, everything was extremely slow. The ordering was by seat and QR code. The orders, took a very long time, even though they had two sushi chefs and only six people in the restaurant. They were apologetic, but it was still odd.

Yelp
Handover by the Slice is located on the corner of King Street in Old Town. The restaurant serves cold beer and slices of pizza. I came to Handover right at lunch time. The pizzas are located right at the front as soon as you walk in the restaurant. It made it a little difficult to see what pizza slice options were available with other people in line. The person before me ordered the slice I wanted, by the time I placed my order. However I did not have to wait long for a new pie to come out. The pepperoni slice was a decent size. The pizza was tasty. The crust had a texture that I was not a fan of, but overall I did like the pizza.

Yelp
Excellent slices! BUT come on! Pizza is very inexpensive to make. The size of your slices leave me wondering if you guys know the business at all. @3.50$/slice plus the obligatory tip shaming, you can definitely afford to make 16" pie slices. Better yet, make the pies for slices a little bigger to make slices that will make your store a landmark in OLD Towne and not a place that will be gone next year. MAKE YOUR SLICES 10-15% larger and your business will double. Your pizza's crust makes your pizza because it is re-heated in those 1000w ovens to achieve an irresistible crunchy slice. Your pizza slices are awesome but always room for improvement. We came in to day and had four slices.

Yelp
Alexandria, VA - Old Town is a great place to walk around but is not exactly a bargain area for food when one's a bit peckish. That's where Handover by the Slice comes in. The husband and I needed a bit of snack before dinner without a huge investment of time or money. I'm glad we skipped Taco Bell in favor of this little place. For a little over $10 we received two hot Slices and a 16 ounce Diet Coke. Service was fairly quick and efficient though it seemed like a lot of items that should be near at hand were in the back? Perhaps a re stocking issue happened and there was only one employee who we could see at the time. A nice bonus was the watching out the plate glass window. Well worth the cost of the slices. When you need a no fuss snack in Old Town check out Handover by the Slice.

Yelp
Handover by the Slice is a small slice shop that is located right off of King; in the evenings, they open up their bar, King's Ransom, located on their 2nd floor. I saw this place while picking up lunch from an eatery next door, so I knew I had to stop by to check them out. Their menu offers various appetizers (such as garlic knots, jalapeno poppers, onion rings, etc.), salads, specialty pizzas (by-the-slice or as a full 18" pie), as well as a build-your-own option (not by-the-slice, though, but for full 18" pies only). The pizzas that they had available when I walked in were the Cheese, pepperoni, Veggie, White, Buffalo Chix, BBQ Chix, and the Daily Special (which was a combo of banana peppers and sausage) - I opted for the Buffalo Chix. The slice was extremely large and generous, and it couldn't even fit in the slice container! The crust is crunchy, and in between a pan and a thin crust. The toppings were just okay - I thought it was interesting that they used boneless battered chicken chunks as their toppings; not much of a buffalo sauce, and I wished they had more red onions. The slice was on the bland side, and adding Parm and the chili flakes only helped it slightly. Even though the slice was heated, I think it should have been heated more as it was still slightly cold, because, you know, I like my items to be piping hot! Service was very friendly, and there were counter seating and bar seating inside. I thought it was cool that they had two vintage arcade games. I wouldn't be opposed to try them again for another slice, but would definitely request for the slice to be heated all the way through! +pizza by-the-slice +bland toppings +request more of a heat through for the slices +friendly service +seating available inside

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise! I stumbled upon this great pizza place in Old Town. Hands down the best pizza in the DMV. It's really close to a NYC slice with great flavor. The service was great and it took only a couple of seconds to warm up my slice. I will be back! #HappyEating

Yelp
I really love the pizza by the slice option here! The ambiance is welcoming and gives you "throwback" feels with a couple of game machines and high top seating along the window. I've called in and ordered a whole pizza which was just as delicious and ready in the time that was promised. Service has always been nice and laid back! I love coming here to satisfy that pizza craving!

Yelp
Pepperoni pizza was delicious, when you just want a spot where to get slice of pizza this is it in Alexandria
google avatar

Hokie H.

Yelp
Pretty good NY style pizza. We got the whole pie and did half cheese and half pepperoni. Real Cheese....good sauce and crust.
google avatar

Naima K.

Yelp
This is a good option for groups and/or tourists who are looking for a quick bite or to be able to walk and eat. There are a few pizza options and seating. It's not really a place to dwell or meet up, but they have drinks and space (there is a bar upstairs too). Service was attentive and the pizza was warmed up quickly. I didn't particularly like the pizza; the sauce is sweeter than I prefer and the cheese doesn't have much depth in flavor. Better than Papa John's but honestly, Wegmans pizza is better. Worth a try if you're in the neighborhood though.

Yelp
The pizza was super good! It is by the slice or you can buy the entire pie for 20$. Not a bad price at all! These slices are HUGE. It was 4.50$ for a pepperoni slice and 3.50$ for a general cheese slice! The service was super quick and the cashier was very nice the entire time! The atmosphere in the room was also calm and really cool, they had Pac-Man games inside!

Yelp
Ok, I had my doubts at first, but this place is a smooth pizza experience all the way around. What could be better than grabbing a crispy slice or two? Not much my, pizza warriors. Seriously, snaking on these bad boys will certain conjure images of John Travolta grabbing to slices at the start of Saturday Night Fever. Trust me, treat yourself to some tasty treats from this one, and you'll soon be singing Disco.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
Excellent pizza. I especially like the crust, which is thin but crispy. The prices are excellent too, so I wasn't sure how good it would be, but I'll definitely be back. Ordering was a bit chaotic/disorganized, but a whole crowd came at once so I kind of get it.

Yelp
Solid slices! For some reason Old Town hasn't really had a traditional quasi-NY-style pizza joint, and I'm honestly not sure why. Handover by the Slice definitely fills that void, and fills it well. I haven't ordered a whole pie yet, just individual slices, but they've been good. Slice selection varies based on what they have in the window, but it looks like you can order the specialty pies at will if you're ordering a whole pie. Service has been fine so far, but it's a slice shop so I'd be a little surprised if it was noticeably bad. In addition to the good pizza, a really great selection of canned regional microbrews. All in all an awesome addition to the area, and definitely int he regular rotation!

Yelp
Stopped in and what's pleasantly surprised. Grew up in New Jersey so I know pizza. This is Italy one of the better pieces of pizza. I've had in my life. Thin and crispy and the cheese wasn't greasy. Crust was amazing.
google avatar

Dmitriy I.

Yelp
Very cool vibe and ambiance, seems to Be a popular place for locals, however if your looking for good pizza this is not the place to go, to be honest I wouldn't even feed this to my dog coming from growing up on a NY slice, it looked good and it hurt with how disappointing it became with each bite. The sauce is non existent and the dough is just plain with no char or fluffiness, feels like I'm eating a basic toast with cheese sadly.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Dope little spot for a quick slice & Street Fighter butt whippin. Service was to be desired. Pizza looked good in the window so I decided to get a couple. Had a plane cheese and a white. As a pizza connoisseur this was the worst slice I've had in a very long time. The cheese tasted of low quality, too much of it with not enough sauce, drippin grease, way too much cornmeal on the bottom, flop city with zero crunch. I'd compare it to gas station pizza. White slice was a little better but same issues. This one was more doughy, zero crunch and not much flavor. Ended up throwing half of my order away. It was a great deception. I was drawn in by the pies good looks but ended up being a horrible date. If you're a pizza connaisseur I would not recommend coming here. If you don't care about quality, it is a good value for what it is and the location it's in.

Yelp
Great pizza, great prices. The service was a little all over the place. And they did forget my water, but gave it to me right away. And it was busy.
google avatar

Anthony A.

Yelp
Great location and nice helpful staff. The pizza was average to me, I prefer a greasy New York slice, but my partner liked it because it reminded them of Shakey's pizza in Milwaukee. The Caesar salad was probably one of the best I've ever had. Fresh greens, homemade croutons and delicious dressing. Check it out
google avatar

Katherine C.

Yelp
Stopped in this place randomly and was pleasantly surprised by the amazing quality of all the food items. The chicken tenders were some of the best I've had in a long time. Highly recommend checking it out!
google avatar

Carolyn M.

Yelp
Topping of pepperoni was yummy but the crust although thin was not crispy enough like NYC style pizza should be. I will give them a chance to improve and return to see how they do.

Yelp
Now, I can't understand why Old Town Alexandria never had a pizza by the slice spot before now but folks, Handover Pizza by the Slice is now open! Feeling like a slice late after a night out at the bar? Or maybe a quick nosh while sightseeing with out of town friends? This is the place to be. Satisfying, hearty slices sure to cure your peckishness, you can't miss with Handover. Simple and satisfying with great music from the 70s, 80s and 90s you gotta make this stop.

Tamara S.

Yelp
is place is a throwback to my time as a kid growing up in NYC hanging out with my friends at the pizza parlor. Complete with PacMan, Street Fighter II and 80s music, this place has ambience along with good pizza by the slice or pie. And the price is sweet, a much needed respite from some of the pricier eateries in Old Town Alexandria. They stay open late and have a liquor license so that is two more pluses. It's rare anywhere to get a and a drink for less than ten bucks. Hangover by The Slice is pizza perfect

Yelp
I recently stopped by to get a slice or two. The pizza is on display in the window case. This place has some good things about it; they have come products in bottles, the canned beer selection seems pretty good and the location, the southeast corner of King Street and Columbus, is great. One last thing is that they are open late according to the info on the door. Now the pizza. I really like the crust. It has a good crunch to it even though I was able to fold the slice in half. I had two sausage and pepperoni slices. This isn't a thin crust pizza, but I wouldn't call it a thick crust either. I will say that the toppings were scant and that there wasn't anything remarkable about it. To me, it wasn't much better than generic pizza, which was disappointing. The staff was very friendly.

Tim M.

Yelp
Looking for a new pizza place in Alexabdria, I stumbled upon Handover by the Slice. The interior is very cool with plenty of seating and ample lighting. That's where the good ends. The service was horrible. This is counter order so should not be difficult, however, neither of the 2 employees stopped talking to each other to acknowledge waiting patrons for several minutes. After ordering PLAIN CHEESE PIZZA, I received 2 different slices (one with all meat and another with veggies). When I pointed this out, the employee became irritated and attempted to charge me for the cheese slices I had already paid for!! The pizza was ok. It was sitting out in a display case and then warmed up just behind the counter. I couldn't see if they used a microwave or not but the pizza was warmed. Knowing Andy's pizza is just down the block, save yourself the aggravation and head to Andy's instead. Better flavor and friendly service!
google avatar

Yelp
Piazza is goouddd! Crispy crust, high quality, and yummy frozen rose. Only complaint... the pizza is not in a covered space and people literally can point/. Touch the food. A dude rubbed his nose and reached for his slice. Kinda gross and unsanitary. We are better old town... put a case around the pizza like NYC.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
The pizza is just ok, but the worst part is they make you listen to country music. Boooooo

A C.

Yelp
The pizza taste was average. I recommend that the chef consider using different flour and use a better, more seasoned and savory sauce. Y'all need salt and garlic! The Service was awesome! Rob was great. I love the setup of the place, with clean counters and arcade games. Yes, I'm from NYC so the pizza is not going to taste like home but with the improvements I suggested above, this place can be a gem.
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
great service and this pizza is bomb. i decided to try it when i walked by the window and saw the fresh pizza. nice selection of apps and beers and bar style seating. better than andys pizza.

Yelp
Best pizza in old town hands down. I've lived here for five years and can't find a better place. There are many contenders too and I'm just convinced. I highly highly highly recommend.

Melssse T.

Yelp
The worst service ever. Dude at the counter literally throw the slice of pizza with the box at me .Not treated with any kind of customer service. Feels like I was getting paid to be there. Writing this before even having a bite of the pizza. Service matters as much as the food you are serving. Guy in a man bun and and tattoos please don't be there if you don't want to be there or if you hate your job please quit or find something that make you happy.

Eden A.

Yelp
Fresh ingredient pizza slices, crispy fries. Staff was friendly. Loved sitting by the windows looking at the streets of Old Town
google avatar

Megan B.

Yelp
The food was pretty decent for the price point ($4.50/slice), but the only guy working there when me and my boyfriend went didn't say a single word to us the entire time we visited and was really standoffish. Was awkward and quiet in there. I wouldn't go again based off food alone just because of how weird and unwelcoming the service was.

Robert B.

Yelp
Stopped by for a slice after a haircut. Pizza is good, service is fast, and it was fairly cheap. This will be a regular in my pizza rotation.

Cara C.

Yelp
The owner needs to fire the tall, light skinned mixed or African American cashier with braids. He had an attitude when we asked questions about the menu and threw our pizzas in the box. He also acted like it was an inconvenience to reverse something during checkout process, namely the tip that he did not deserve. He was awful for no reason. And the pizza is extremely mediocre. It's on the the level of college kid drunk food. Adios.

J W.

Yelp
Terribly mismanaged business. The pizza is alright for the area, it's actually pretty decent. They will often run out of pepperoni and other critical ingredients. If you try to order delivery they will be missing a chef. Do better guys.

Uyen N.

Yelp
Really, really good pizza! The best NY-Style pizza I've had in northern VA. Foldable and crust is perfect!!

Andi S.

Yelp
Wow walked in to get a slice. I am very impressed. It's one of the pizzas I've had and I've had alot of pizzas. I would highly recommend.

Amanda T.

Yelp
I got the bbq chicken pizza and it was really good. Chicken was fried so it was crispy and the bbq sauce wasn't too sweet. My only complaint was the employee at the front was unfriendly and didn't say a word the entire time I was in there. I will be going back tho bc it might have been a one off and the pizza was yummy!
