How to Spend a Food-Filled Weekend in California’s Mount Shasta | Eater SF

"Not quite a speakeasy: approach past a wooden fence with signs reading "Cold Beer" and "Must Be 21 or Older" and find a larger-than-expected drinking pad with ping pong, foosball, and an arcade machine. Filled with Detroit Tigers and Michigan paraphernalia and TVs for sports, the spot is strictly beer and wine (not a full bar). The menu leans surprising — sushi rolls and pancakes have appeared, and a pastrami Reuben was on a recent menu — and the proprietor serves as the standing mayor of Mount Shasta as of this writing." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
Great hidden find with outdoor seating, indoor and outdoor games to play or just sit and chill! Sushi is fresh and flavorful. Good selection of beer and NA options. Don't miss this spot!

Google
this place has the best deals in town for beers. The sushi chef is great and autumn the bartender is the most beautiful girl i have ever seen.

Handsome John's is a fun local spot in Mount Shasta. They have a decent selection of beers, wines, and ciders and staff is fairly welcoming. They have a nice patio area but there have been a few times where people were smoking out there. Kinda obnoxious. But they have new signage to discourage it. Overall a nice place but when it gets busy, the inside gets quite loud and it can be difficult to have a conversation.

Google
Something I would never expect... John making sushi rolls and bowls in a mancave looking bar... A must visit in Shasta.. Everyone there was nice and met some awesome people.

Google
Ordered the large Rainbow and Pablo Escobar Sushi rolls. The rolls are thick and tasted great! This bar has an amazing vibe, board games, ping pong, good drinks and amazing food.

Google
Vibey bar with a ping pong table and outdoor Cornhole/patio seating ~ welcoming to all kinda place. Only about 4 on draft, but great can selection

Google
Great place to hang out! Wish we weren't to late to try the food. Owner is very friendly and our server Autumn was fantastic! Would definitely recommend!

Google
God bless. The place is good, the pizza crust is thin, and John is handsome. And yeah, beer is good as well

Yelp
We were really shocked this place has good ratings, would not return. Were looking for a few beers on tap and appetizers, figured why not since they had decent reviews on their sushi rolls. The entrance was hard to find, walked in and stood at the bar for a few minutes. Said we wanted to order some draft beer and the one we ordered ran out half way through a pour where the bartender said they needed to change the keg. We asked if we could grab a table and sat there a while.. Finally I went back up to the bar thinking she would of brought us out or signaled "Hey here's your beer" but nothing. When I asked about our beer she said, Oh we switched it to a different keg.. So I ordered different beer and asked if we could order food, menu was on the wall.. The ordering process but a tad confusing..Do we seat ourselves, where are the menus, do you we order at the bar? The bartender didn't seemed helpful or like she really cared to be honest. We ordered the rainbow roll and lemon drop roll (something like that). Both came out, no small plates just the dishes and small saucers for soy sauce. Neither roll was good at all, no taste, mostly rice, definitely zero lemon flavor, fishy taste on both but could of been due to the sushi nori. We didn't expect great sushi rolls but these we the worst we've had since we could remember. Not only that, pretty sure the sushi rolls are the option for food in this place. The atmosphere is super divey, more like an outdated locals hang out, everything was just kind of gross. Wouldn't return.

Yelp
A friend told us about this place and we just had to visit and try their sushi. We couldn't believe that sushi even existed in Mount Shasta! LOL! Cute, fun vibe place with both outdoor, indoor and counter/bar spots to choose from. The sushi wasn't bad, but the server was cold and lacked any type of personality. She was this way to everyone, locals and newcomers alike. Not only that, she mumbled and didn't speak loudly so we had to ask her several times to repeat whatever she mumbled. They ran out of a couple beers on tap and that communication was like a horrible game of ping pong that we wanted no part of. Sigh! This is such a cool, fun place with games and a fabulous variety of food, but I doubt that we will ever return unless they replace that mumbling server. She might think she's cool or whatever, but she just comes off as being cold, rude, insensitive and definitely not customer service oriented. There are tons of places to eat in Mount Shasta, they aren't sushi but at least the servers are friendly at the other places.

Yelp
Great bar! Love this place...more food options coming. Not for kids. It's a great place to hang out!!

Yelp
This place is such a hidden gem! I had no idea I could get a pretty decent beer and some bomb-ass sushi in a small town like Mt. Shasta. The ambiance is your typical dive - chill, cozy, no pretense at all. Definitely a pleasant surprise and will be coming back the next time we pass thru. Thanks, John, for bringing sushi to Mt. Shasta!

Yelp
Great spot. Good sushi. Fun games to play. Friendly staff that let me and my buddy stay late to finish our game of darts! I'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Don't let the eclectic atmosphere fool ya. Instead look at this as a lesson in .... Something or other. One bar keep? One cook? So what?? Are you in a hurry? It's a speakeasy. Libations and sushi? Pizza? I've had pizza everywhere man‍ This is the best pizza ever. Timmy the sexy man had a beautiful rainbow roll, amazing. What a delightful gem here in Mt. Shasta. My hat is off to you all, first time here. We will be back again.

Yelp
Hands-down my favorite bar in a 100 mile radius. Best place to watch the Giants game! The beer options are great and, man, can John cook!!! The sushi rolls are outstanding but this guys is so good, you won't be disappointed no matter what you get. Food starts after 5pm and there's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They also have corn hole boards and the bathrooms are clean! Fun place. They always welcome us like we are local even though we live an hour away. Love it here!
google avatar

Jamie G.

Yelp
Quaint little spot! Love a good speakeasy. Good Beer and wine spot if that's what you like. Good place for a cold beer and a game of ping pong. Lots of room inside.
google avatar

Henry F.

Yelp
I had the sushi and it was perfect, the service was excellent what a great experience definitely my go-to spot. The people and ambiance was just my style. See ya soon

Maya M.

Yelp
My husband and I were visiting family over the Thanksgiving break and we were so happy to stumble into this fun bar. It was so welcoming and festive. I ordered some decent red wine at a good price and my husband order a rum and coke. Then we played a few rounds of of ping pong. If you're looking for a cozy and unpretentious place in Mt Shasta, this is it.
google avatar

Marni P.

Yelp
If you are looking for a local dive bar then John's is the place. There is a great choice of draft beers plus wine and cider. John also has ping pong tables and a nice outdoor area for enjoying the sun in Mt Shasta!
google avatar

Yelp
Wow!!!!!! Coolest place to grab a drink or some food, john works there and treats everyone like family started simple and ended up being a top place in Shasta everyone loves... first bar in Shasta I've seen full on a weekend go support John he has a cool board you can buy friends beers he put their name on it,,,then when that person comes in and looks there see's their name it a drink a friends bought you...small town friend stuff like this is cool.
google avatar

Yelp
Sushi is my kryptonite and John serves it up fresh and well portioned. Salmon belly (cooked) is beyond excellent. Excellent selection of beers and cider. You must be over 21 to enter, no children, babies. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating area.
google avatar

Yelp
Two words: Awesome spot. Great people, great food, great service! Local spot that's welcoming to new folks as long as you're not an asshole. This town is an enclave of smart people with good perspective despite being a small town in the sticks. I'll be back!
google avatar

Carl Z.

Yelp
Great prices for beer and wine, fast and friendly service and the kicker was my buddy talked us into sushi made by the legend Handsome John himself. Haven't ever ordered sushi from a speakeasy or bar.... So glad we did. Will be back for more!
google avatar

Yelp
I was here in 2015 not long after they opened. Drank some good beers and watched the Dubs with their first chip. Good times. Back again 3 years later. Good people, good beer, so no change there. Unfortunately, after 2 hot days, it's like being in a clothes dryer, so I've been relegated to the plastic seats outside. Since it's Mt Shasta, the smell of weed hangs heavy. Good beer overcomes everything.

Yelp
We went through the area to spend the day hiking Mount Shasta. At the end of day we were HUNGRY! This place looked great on Yelp- so why not? We were NOT disappointed! They had a very good beer selection with some good local brews. Decent wine selection as well. Pricing for alcohol was fair. No hard alcohol though. Food: pretty damn good! I can't give them 5 stars as the steak was a bit too well done; and thus chewy. I wish 4.5 stars was an option. Aside from that (and honestly, it was NOT at all bad) the food was amazing! We had chicken salad stuffed avocados as an appetizer- delicious! The The steak skewers came out overlying grilled peppers and onions with balsamic vinegar- which was extremely good aside from being well done. We also ordered the grilled zucchini, which came with sweet corn and ranch for dipping. All were good sized portions!! The zucchini actually was very generous- I'm a veggie fanatic and probably wouldn't have been able to finish it all myself. The setting is low key. It was hotter inside so we sat on the patio. They had laid back patio seating and allowed dogs. Dog friendly is a huge PLUS! Inside is dark. There's fun paintings along the walls. It's clean, but casual and low key. Lots of TV's with sports on. Games were around in case anyone was bored. Pricing wasn't bad either. Between my fiancé and I we killed 3 dishes, 3 beers, and a generous glass of wine. Total was $41. We'll be back the next time we are in t he area! Kudos to the cook!

Yelp
This is the place! Best owner and staff! Remembers your name and appreciates your business. The best sushi rolls I have ever had. Great rotating beer selection and good wines as well!! We go here at least once a week and probably more when we move to mount shasta! Foosball, pingpong and many TVs with all sports. Great local crowd and a very nice outdoor seating section that you can bring your furry friends to as well! Love this place with a passion, keep up the good work boys. And I guess john is handsome too lol!
google avatar

Jaime B.

Yelp
Lots of different beers and games. The bartender was great and there is a diversity of sports on tv! Fun place!! The walls have very cool murals and artwork. Although we didn't eat, the menu looked good!
google avatar

Erik U.

Yelp
One of the newest bars in town, although, the proprietor Jhon was the old bar keep, beer order guy, runner of the old "goat tavern" which is no longer. The beers on tap here at handsome johns are always new, different and on point... There is something for you here. Live music, foosball, darts, chess and dominoes... Some of the entertainment here. Overall, great atmosphere, only place in Shasta to drink a cold beer on a hot summer day, OUTSIDE! Come check it out if you're visiting, living or even surviving. See you soon.
google avatar

Cris S.

Yelp
Come on, Pizza night (Tuesday) is the best thing around!!! A couple of personal pizza pies and a couple of pints. A perfect meal And let us not forget about Fish Taco night (Friday). Thanks John.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
This is a must stop on your trip up to Oregon. A little hard to find, tucked behind a convenience store. We were about to bail when we didn't see it on our first drive by. Definitely worth the second effort. Great beer collection and ambiance, didn't try the food but people there seemed to like it. The highlight was the ping pong. My friend and I are pretty good tennis players and thought we'd run the table at this funky little bar. Little did we know Thursday is ping pong night. We got taught a serious ping pong lesson by a local German and Hawaiian. The best ping pong players either of us have run into, and super friendly. Had a great time.

Yelp
Wow, I finally had handsome John's legendary sushi that I had been hearing about. I'm a bit of a sushi connoisseur, and his sushi really impressed me. It was actually some of the best sushi I've had in quite a while.
google avatar

Paula N.

Yelp
Good food, great variety in in beverages, & the patio has an amazing vibe with games.
google avatar

Yelp
What a cool place, good beers, awesome happy hour! Rolling thru town and only staying here one night but instantly in love with this place and the locals. Great indoor and outdoor atmosphere. Cheers!
google avatar

Katrina H.

Yelp
A great place with an awesome staff and owner. I left my wallet there and it was returned cash included... One of a kind
google avatar

Nathaniel F.

Yelp
Great bar with great drafts on tap with friendly service. The menu is a little small (mostly sandwiches), but the hours are really nice, serving food until midnight. I would normally give 4 stars if this bar were in a big city, but the fact that it is located in a small town makes it deserve 5 stars.

Shawn P.

Yelp
Love this spot. Always a friendly greeting upon arrival ..... Great tap options of craft beer, happy hour prices are a throw back too, Simple and delicious pizza menu. I was pleasantly surprised to learn John's recently added BBQshi and Sushi to the menu. Had a Caterpillar Roll and not only was the presentation Fun and Unique I got the saracha mayo and it was to die for. Oughtta put that in a bottle and I'd buy it
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
Local hangout....great beer prices at happy hour. Outdoor seating....walk to downtown....bit hard to find
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
Best place in town! My husband and I went to many places in town trying to have a few drinks together and FINALLY we found this place that had my FAVORITE bottle of wine. Owner is very friendly and a Michigan fan to boot! we were very pleased and ended up coming back for a night cap at the end of the night! Night life atmosphere was fun a ping pong tournament was going on! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Harrison H.

Yelp
An excellent chill spot with good beer. John is doing an excellent job here, imo. I live in Mt. Shasta and can honestly say that I'm glad John's place is here & I do look forward to hanging out with friends here often. The music is also often good and come on, really, how can you not enjoy a good game of ping pong or foosball.
google avatar

Dhruva C.

Yelp
We walked in thirsty and hungry in the middle of an 8-hour journey, and walked out fed, watered, and content. John runs a great establishment, and you can see this in the amount of regulars, whether they're passing through or part of the speakeasy's official fantasy hockey league. This just became a must-stop on all future trips up north.

Ann F.

Yelp
Laid-back, kind of odd, super friendly environment with amazing beers on tap and really tasty food. I want to stop in Mount Shasta on my next trip to Oregon just to go here again. And it is hard to find, as others mentioned - it's tucked to the side of a video store and set back from the road. Bonus was chatting with Handsome John. He's fun and welcoming and a U of M fan. What more could you want in a host? Go Blue!
google avatar

Harold G.

Yelp
Yep. Good food. Not just your average bar food. I had some kind of tuna salad stuffed avocado. Kind of fancy and very good.
google avatar

Ted B.

Yelp
Looking for a great variety of cold beer, glass of wine, live music on the weekends or otherwise just place to toss back a few and chill out? Come to John's. He's a great guy, tons of locals know it and keep coming back for more. Myself included.
google avatar

Yelp
We stayed at the Lake Siskiyou Camp Grounds over this last weekend and were sad to hear that The Goats Tavern had closed down. A nice girl told us about this place so we went over to see how it was. We had no complaints what so ever. The bar tender was very nice and friendly and we also had the pleasure of meeting John the owner. It is truly a treat when the owner thanks you for your business. We hope they offer yummy food at some point that is comparable to The Goat. We will be back soon!
google avatar

Hank B.

Yelp
Nice in town tavern. Good food, cold beer, you can sit inside or outside. Good selection on tap. Every thing is very tasty. Try it out you will be glad you did

Shannon M.

Yelp
Great local spot. Think skiers, mountain bikers, ping pong, classic arcade games (they even have dig dug), and hippies of all variations. Great food, cold beer, perfect vibe...
google avatar

Gary M.

Yelp
This place is good... Just had the hot link sandwich.. It was great. Great atmosphere for locals and visitors alike.. I definitely recommend.
google avatar

Hawkeye S.

Yelp
If you like beer, you'll like Handsome John's. Hasn't been open that long so the decor is still getting set up. He has music regularly and his menu is changed monthly. They're still working on getting more food items added. Has a cheery vibe with lots of locals.
google avatar

Abe G.

Yelp
Great beer selection! Really good food! The wraps are huge and really good. Especially the tuna!
google avatar

Antara N.

Yelp
Came here during a camping trip with some friends from out of town. Relaxed atmosphere and great place to stop for a drink, but would not recommend for food. We had fun playing ping pong and watching the game, so we were easily distracted from our somewhat sad nachos. That said, we only tried the nachos and there was a great beer selection!
google avatar

Surita S.

Yelp
Best bar in Shasta! Amazing owner, makes you feel right at home and good selection of food!!! Come to JOHNS!!!
google avatar

Kay B.

Yelp
Great vibe and friendly locals! Thanks for the round of beers Grover! From the Capital City couple!!!
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
Atmosphere very interesting. Chicago blues based murals. Bar keep friendly and attentive...great selections of beer...tasty food offrings. We devoured the nochos...so good with beer. Fish tacos were slightly spicy...excellent and good value for the price...selection of sandwiches was great...Chicago frank a ok. Menu changes periodically which I like a lot. Music on weekends...Will try soon. Relaxing. Have come back several times...service and quality holds up.

Lizzy F.

Yelp
A little hard to find, but worth looking for! We came here because we rolled into town around 9, and it was one of the few places still open. My husband and I both got draft beers, sandwiches, and shared a bowl of cheese and chili chips. The sandwiches on the menu are all about $10. We both thoroughly enjoyed our food. Our total with tip was under $40 The atmosphere is very relaxed. We wore the clothes we had been hiking in all day and didn't feel out of place. The service was great. One girl took our orders, poured out beer, and made our food. She still made time to chat with us which was nice. The owner also joked with us and made us feel welcome.

Yelp
Couldn't decide on a place to stop for dinner (not to mention a lot of places seemed to be closed on a Tuesday?) but we were looking for a casual stop and a cold beer and the reviews led us to Handsome John's. Cute, eclectic environment with a grassy outdoor patio entrance and a large open bar room inside. John was welcoming as soon as we came in and we sat at the bar. He was bartending, serving and cooking as a one man show and doing a fine job at it. The menu seemed to be an interesting mix of choices, we got the chicken salad stuffed avocado halves to start (DELICIOUS), a BBQ chicken sandwich and a beef dip sandwich. All were excellent! We had a couple cold beers and watched the Giants game and it was a great atmosphere. A lot of locals in house that knew each other by name but we didn't feel at all out of place as out-of-towners. John seemed to be pretty passionate about his place, and we recommend making a stop here when you're in town!!

Jesse W.

Yelp
The new local watering hole, good food, good staff, great beer. I'd go for a few beers after work or for a lunch time sandwich.
