As of the writing of this review, Hang Ah is the ONLY dim sum restaurant in all of North Bay. That includes Marin, Santa Rosa, Sonoma etc.
And the fact that it's actually quite decent, is amazing.Because, they could just be crap... considering they are the ONLY one.
They are a standard dim sum place, and considering this is the only one, I'd say that's pretty good! I'm Cantonese, born in Hong Kong so, dim sum is my jam. And It tastes real and authentic here. I can't say it's the best in the world, so let's set our expectations. If you live in SF and are driving through from wine tasting in Sonoma, again... set your expectation. If you're like me, and you find yourself living in the North Bay, then thank the heavens for Hang Ah... because, there is one, at least one! And it's even pretty decent.
Everything I've had tastes authentic and good. The turnip cake is one of my faves. It's pretty standard and smooth kind - it doesn't have chunks of turnip (like my mom does it), but quite pulverized. But I realized that that's all good because when it's pan fried with crispy edges and the inside seems to just melt in your mouth. Yum!
Ha Gow, Siu Mai - the staples, all standard, what you'd expect. (And that's a good thing!)
I always like to get the pan fried chive dumpling as well - skin is a bit thick, but pan fried to a good crisp. (It's the ONLY dim sum place in North Bay, so I can't complain!)
The only thing slightly strange is the steamed bbq pork bun comes as a giant bun, rather than the standard smaller buns. But again... that's okay! It tastes pretty good. (Prefer it the other way, but again... can't complain)
We've been here a few times and will continue to come here when I get the nostalgic crave.
I do love the diversity of the clientele here. Considering it's North Bay, there is a mix of all sorts of people enjoying dim sum. And that makes me kinda proud to be Cantonese.
Anyhow, I hope I've set your expectations.
