Enjoy a Mountain Breeze at These 9 Hotels in Asia

"Best known for two-tiered infinity swimming pools that overlook the jungles of Ubud, this picturesque haven lets worries fade amid wildlife and the melodious chirping of birds. Perched on the edge of a forested valley, it immerses you in the treetops via a funicular that glides between reception and villas, and with just 44 accommodations the boutique resort never feels overcrowded." - Faye Bradley

"Though a long way from Babylon, the Hanging Gardens of Bali might just be worthy of sharing a name with one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Consider the situation: a half hour outside of Ubud, Bali’s inland attraction, it clings to the edge of the densely forested valley, a situation so precipitous that guests ride a funicular from the reception to the villas." - Tablet Hotels

Hanging Gardens of Bali, Ubud, Bali - Explore & Book

"Within a half-hour’s drive of Bali’s cultural capital, Ubud, you can discover the Hanging Gardens, hidden away at the end of a small lane. As its name suggests, it clings precariously to forested slopes above a deep gorge leading down to the Ayung River. Its 38 villas, spa and restaurant are perched up and down this extremely steep valley. You needn't worry about exhausting climbs, its own ingenious funicular links low ground with high. Each villa has its own terrace for secluded sunning, dining and snoozing. All have their own heated infinity plunge pools but the star attraction is the main pool: its curves mimic surrounding rice terraces and its unique design will drop your jaw. Arrive by day to capture views across to Penataran Dalem Segara temple. Arrive by night to see a glittering ravine with torches marking pathways to the hillside villas. Amidst the sounds of the river and rainforest, you’re in the heart of natural Bali here and in good comfort. A perfect spot for romance, for families and for chilling out. Highs The forest setting with ravine below brings you face to face with Bali's natural interior Unrivalled split-level freshwater swimming pool with breath-taking views across to a gorgeous temple Stylish, well-lit villas with individual, infinity-edged plunge pools and terraces make you feel in a world of your own Attentive service, clubby atmosphere without being stuffy, friendly without being chummy Individually planned excursions give you a glimpse of Bali that many tourists miss Lows Of Ubud's luxury hotels, this is the furthest away from the town centre - a 25 minute drive The free shuttle-bus into town stops at 5pm, after that you’ll need a taxi The hotel’s pool terrace has limited space for lounging At this altitude it’s not as warm as on the coast, but some welcome the cooler air. Plus it’s not for those who suffer from vertigo Due to their design, some rooms may be a little noisy but they are very stylish!" - Viv Monahan

The hotel is simply phenomenal. The room cleaning service is provided multiple times a day, and the view from our panoramic room is absolutely breathtaking. Special thanks to the managers Melvin and Desi, along with Sri and Endik, for their outstanding hospitality and excellent preparation. It was my husband’s birthday, and they helped me create a beautiful and unforgettable surprise. From the restaurant team, heartfelt thanks to Septi for the lovely afternoon tea and wonderful service, Harie, and the amazing Widya, Agung Adi, Purnama, Agus and the great guy Widi. Compliments to the chef for the delicious food, and appreciation to the trainee Ketut Bayu and all staff members. Every employee was kind, professional, and genuinely welcoming. Highly recommended!

Hanging Gardens is an extraordinary destination for a truly romantic escape. Set high within the lush jungle canopy, the resort offers breathtaking views of a serene river below and is majestically overlooked by a stunning temple, creating an atmosphere that feels both sacred and timeless. The staff are among the warmest and most attentive we have ever encountered, consistently going above and beyond to ensure every moment of the stay feels seamless and unforgettable. Their genuine hospitality elevates the entire experience to another level. While the stay is undeniably a significant investment, it is one that delivers exceptional value. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience defined by beauty, tranquility, and world-class service, Hanging Gardens is absolutely worth every moment.

This is a very special place. Having traveled the world and stayed at some wonderful places this is right amongst the absolute best. The service is warm and welcoming. The staff anticipate your needs and do so with warmth and kindness. The hotel is truly spectacular with amazing vistas everywhere. The flowers and scent of frangipani are pervasive. The villas are spectacular with wonderful and comfortable (firm) mattresses. The food at 3 Elements matches the quality of the restaurant and if Michelin were to visit Bali would warrant a star. Most impressive is the commitment to sustainability amongst the luxury. The hotel was built by local craftsmen using traditional materials and placed into the property to minimize impact so that only one tree was cut down to build the entire resort. Water is provided in glass bottles re-used by the hotel. The wine list includes some interesting Bali wines, and the cocktails are built using a “zero mile philosophy” meaning that all the non spirit elements are sourced within a mile of the hotel. Our only regret was not being able to stay longer.

Our honeymoon stay at Hanging Gardens was absolutely magical. The place is breathtakingly beautiful, surrounded by nature and tranquility. The staff was exceptional! warm, attentive, and incredibly professional, providing a level of service that exceeded all expectations. The breakfast was delicious as well with a really wide variety of choices. Their iconic swimming pools were stunning and the perfect place to relax and take great photos. We also do the yoga class next to the river, fun activity! But most importantly, the spa was the best thing which was beyond our expectations. Overall, everything about Hanging Gardens felt luxurious, peaceful, and thoughtfully designed. This was the perfect setting for our honeymoon, and we already know we will return. Highly recommended!

Beautiful Setting, but Terrible Sleep and Outdated Property We stayed at the Hanging Gardens of Bali for three nights, and unfortunately, the experience was far below expectations. On two out of the three mornings, our sleep was completely ruined by a loud water pump sound that started around 5:40 AM. After the first incident, I personally informed the reception and requested that it not happen again in our room. Despite that, it repeated the very next morning. What made it worse was the way the staff handled it — the receptionist initially tried to pass it off as an “insect sound,” even though she herself had earlier confirmed it was the water pump. For a resort that promotes itself as a tranquil jungle retreat, being woken up by such noise at dawn is simply unacceptable. The food was another major disappointment. Both the à la carte breakfast and the dine-in restaurant meals were extremely poor in taste and quality — a far cry from what one would expect at a property of this reputation and pricing. The breakfast not being a buffet only added to the sense of limitation and underwhelming service. To be fair, the one truly positive aspect of our stay was the surreal experience of the outdoor lift and the beautiful feeling of being surrounded by the lush jungle — that part genuinely lived up to the resort’s promise. Unfortunately, everything else fell short. The property clearly feels old and outdated, lacking the refinement, upkeep, and attention to detail expected from a luxury resort. Overall, while the setting is undeniably stunning, the management urgently needs to address the noise problem, elevate the food standards, and train the staff to handle guest feedback more honestly and professionally. Until then, it’s hard to recommend this property for anyone seeking a peaceful and comfortable stay.

I stayed at the Hanging Gardens of Bali in April 2025 and without a doubt, it delivered the finest location and hospitality I've ever experienced. Its located deep in nature with fresh mountain air and lush surroundings, it felt like a serene escape rather than a typical tourist spot, i found it was never overcrowded, even during peak season. Every villa and room is uniquely personalized and tailored to your preferences on. The staff were exceptionally warm and attentive, from the concierge to the housekeeping team. I genuinely amazed by the little touches they made. For example, cleaners not only tidied electrical cables but also polished my sunglasses and left a fresh microfibre cloth for ongoing use. This level of detail made the stay feel truly bespoke. The food and drinks were amazing, it all tasted fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared daily for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. Highlights included vibrant tropical fruits, authentic Balinese spices, and inventive fusion dishes. One evening, we were treated to a traditional Balinese dance performance under the stars with the full moon out, with the crickets chirping. The swimming pools were pristine, with infinity-edge designs which offered amazing views, and the overall facilities were well-maintained. I highly recommend getting in one of their signature massages at the on-site spa, the relaxation was sublime. This hidden hotel definitely exceeded expectations and i will hopefully be returning.

The Hanging Gardens of Bali is an amazing hotel with exceptional views in a quiet, secluded location. Staff have very high standards and do everything to make the stay memorable. The room with private pools offer all that is needed to rest and enjoy the place with an amazing panoramic view at all times. The hotel also has a great spa and a scenic riverside path. The restaurant and bar offer very good variety from breakfast to dinner.
