Ann Arbor’s Best New Restaurants and Bars, May 2025 | Eater Detroit

"This immersive Korean restaurant delivers a high-energy dining experience, complete with K-pop videos on loop and walls decked out in Korean beer posters. Beer towers — a nightlife staple across Asia — are the norm here, often multiplying as the night goes on. Popular dishes include kimchi fried rice, whole-fried chicken, and jokbal (sliced braised pig’s feet served with lettuce and fermented shrimp sauce). As the evening progresses, the vibe shifts from a dinner spot to a lively hangout. Reserve a table online or place an order to-go." - Mary Hayes Weier

I recently had the pleasure of celebrating the weekend with friends at HanJan Pocha, and it was a fantastic experience! The atmosphere was vibrant and perfect for socializing, with great vibes all around. The highlight of the meal was definitely the pork feet. It was incredibly tender and packed with flavor! A friendly tip—if you’re not a chili pro, I recommend putting the spicy sauce on the side. It’s delicious but packs a serious punch! HanJan Pocha really nails the concept of sharing, with generous portions that bring the group together. Their menu is inspired by Korean street food, and you can tell that everything is made with the freshest ingredients, prepared daily. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking for authentic and flavorful Korean dishes in a social and laid-back setting.

As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the wonderful hostess. Immediately enveloped in the atmosphere I knew I was in the right spot. I was about to have a good experience!! The service was wonderful!!! Our server was very polite and very informative. When she brought the food to the table, the trays of food were huge. The presentation was really pretty, but highlight of the day were the flavors from the food. It was amazing!!!!!!! We had the pig feet aka/jokbal!! Never in my life had I had pug feet like that so tender and sliced and spiced to perfection. We also had the double fried whole chicken, the freshness, and the taste of that chicken was like no other. This is a definite restaurant that you want to check out. I highly recommend it. You won’t be disappointed and you’ll definitely go back

This restaurant has delicious cuisines. The portions are large and prepared nicely. The ambience is unique in this area. The prices are a bit high, I would prefer smaller portions with lower prices.

This is my first time here. The atmosphere is nice, and the staff/service is friendly and welcoming. As for the food, it’s okay—I’m somewhat satisfied.

Amazing Korean restaurant with delicious food! The spicy jokbal was packed with flavor—tender, rich, and perfectly spicy.

My sister and I had an amazing dinner here! The vibe is so fun and the food is delicious. The Korean Fried Chicken is a must! We also tried the Ramen Bulgogi, Pan Fried Mandu, Tteok Bokki, and a dish with snail. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
Rating five stars because it’s a welcome addition to the neighborhood and the ambiance is nice. The fish cake soup is good and very plentiful (like enough for 3 or 4 people). The kimchi pancake had nice flavor but the texture was really very off. Not crispy at all, and when you chewed it, it turned gummy and doughy. So maybe if you’re going to order the pancake, specify you want it crisped up. I’ll likely be back to try some of the dishes that’s harder to find in Ann Arbor like the spicy whelks and pork trotters.

Google
Greta place to eat/drink with friends - super cozy atmosphere and it feels like a local restaurant in Seoul. Dishes are pretty good and they don’t hold back on spice, jajang tteokbokki was great

Yelp
Pros: Service here is pretty good. Waiters were nice, responsive, and our food (6-7 dishes) came out relatively quickly. Cons: Expensive. Every dish is around $20-30, and honestly barely enough to feed one person. The flavors were overall alright, but biggest complaint for me is going to be the price. HanJan Pocha's fried chicken is served as an entire chicken, but honestly there was barely any meat (paid over $35 for this dish). While the flavor of the tteokbokki was solid, the tteok was not fresh and not chewy. This place is a "bar food" korean restaurant. Definitely catered more towards the drinking community, and less to those coming to have solid, korean food.

Yelp
This Korean gastropub recently opened in the old Miki Sushi location. There's paid parking across the street, so parking is convenient. The lighting, decor, and furnishing inside is very much like the street-side stalls or tents in Korea that serve food and alcohol in a social, casual atmosphere. The menu is simple and they have some fun drinks/cocktails. I thought the food was okay. It's not the best I've had, but I think most people come for social drinking. The army hot pot was very tasty and flavorful. I was actually impressed. The tang su yuk was also fried well and the sauce was good. The jokbal was a big portion, but not the best I've had. The fried chicken was overcooked and dry, so that was disappointing because we love Korean fried chicken. We also did not care for the kimchi jeon, as it had a very chewy texture and not what we expected for a kimchi pancake. Our waiter was very attentive and nice though.

Yelp
I was so excited to try the new Pocha, street food style Korean restaurant. They have a lot of options that are traditional Korean food that you can't get everywhere, like a whole fried chicken or Tteokbokki and sausage skewers. They also have Korean food you can find on traditional menus like bugolgi and kimchi fried rice. The ambience is club like with loud music and lights, but it was very fun. I can imagine this could get really loud when they are busy, but we came by on a slow night. Our server was very attentive and did a great job. My only complaint is that I prefer salty and spicy food. For my tastes, the food was much in need of salt. I compensated by adding Saeu-jeot to everything (the shrimp sauce). Also, the banchan were a bit lacking--they were kimchi, diakon, and then the third we just got the sauce and no veggies. Overall, the portions were huge. The fried chicken was hot and juicy. The pork was succulent. I'd go back for sure.

Yelp
A little underwhelmed to be honest. Ordered the bulgogi for lunch today and it was pretty pricey at around $25. Honestly not sure who the target market is here because it's definitely above a student budget yet as the name suggests it's pretty casual. It came with miso soup, banchan, and rice. The miso soup was actually pretty tasty. I was underwhelmed with the banchan, especially the quantity thereof. The kimchi was good but everything else was pretty meh. I believe there were six or seven banchan in total. The bulgogi had nice flavor but was a little too oily? I've had a lot of bulgogi in my day (my aunt is Korean) and I've never experienced this before. It also was a pretty lacking portion for the money. I probably wouldn't rush to try it again honestly. They do have a lunch special that looks potentially intriguing, but based on my experience it would take some convincing.

Yelp
Hanjan Pocha is an absolute gem if you're craving authentic Korean comfort food with a fun, casual vibe. From the moment you step in, you're greeted by the lively atmosphere that feels like you've just stumbled into a cozy neighborhood spot in Seoul. The decor is vibrant, and there's a cool, laid-back energy to the place. The service is good and overall a fun vibe! They have karaoke in the back.

Yelp
We went here for dinner on a Sunday evening. We ordered the tteokbokki, whole chicken, and pig knuckle. All of the meats were so tender and delicious. The tteokbokki was also very delicious. Our server was very nice and s we got our food quickly. It wasn't noisy because it wasn't crowded.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place, but unfortunately I was let down. Me and my two sisters came after night out at about 12:15am on Saturday and we were so excited to see that they were open until 2am! When we got there we stood around for solid minute while the servers just stared at us. The manager finally sat down at a table and I noticed that the menu was limited, but had good choices. We ordered ramen with chicken, ramen with shrimp, bulgogi, and corn cheese. This whole meal cost us $72 + tip. I'll start by saying the food came out fast which was nice! The server brought out all our food at the same time but he never came back to check up on us. After waiting 10-15 minutes, I called our server over to ask for napkins. Additionally, the server never came back to give us a refill on water, no one came to see if our food was ok, we didn't even get the check or boxes from our server, we got everything from the manager. At one point, I even asked the manager are these tipped employees because they're not doing anything for a tip right now. Mind you, the servers were not busy, there were 3 of them hanging out in the back, and its totally fine if you wanna hang out, but you're really not gonna check on any of your tables? The food itself is decent. I wouldn't rave about it, but after a night out it was good. The Bulgogi was flavorful, corn cheese wasn't bad, and the Ramen tasted like a lighter version of Shin Ramen. I'm an Asian myself so typically I'm always pro Asian businesses. 9/10 times even if I don't love the food or service I'll still rate them well. However, there's no excuse for this, these looked like maybe young college students as servers who know how to serve a table, but failed to do so. I recommend hiring a new round of staff.

Yelp
It was a nice little spot. They tried mimicking the nightlife bar vibe we all see on TV. It has more of club vibe and a little loud. despite all that the food was good and the portions were large( hence the pricing). It's not so much a family sit down or catch-up place but more of a meet up for drinking and having fun. Make sure to share or like the same foods otherwise you'll have plenty of leftovers. Our server was very sweet and nice. The food was hot and we got everything we ordered correctly. Give it a try because the food was good.

Yelp
Opening weekend and things are still coming together. I will update my review on e there is a more complete menu and items to try. I'll chalk it up to opening weekend issues and leave it at that. They will ah e hot pot once the permits and inspections are done. The service was excellent. Very attentive and helpful. The new decor of the restaurant is open and vibrant. Great place to hangout for late night eats. Or it will be. Looking forward to going back.

Yelp
Was able to get a reservation here for New Years Eve and dined for the first time. The interior still looks a lot like Miki, just more lights and K-pop vibes. K-pop on the TV and speakers, a lot of reflective surfaces and moving lights -- definitely intended as a late-night spot. We had: - Pineapple soju - nothing special imo, you can buy the brand at a market. - Sausage and rice cake skewers - this was a generous portion and very good. The sauce was just spicy enough while also being sweet and smoky. - Sweet Potato Noodles - there were like 5 tiny pieces of bulgogi in here. They definitely need to increase the portion of that if they are going to advertise it in the menu. Flavor was good and enjoyed the noodles despite the lack of meat. - Tang Su Yuk - I guess we didn't specify or were asked if we wanted mushrooms or pork, because we ended up with mushrooms. I think the pork would have been better because the breading would have attached to it better. For tempura, the coating was rather heavy and chewy, not light and airy like you'd expect. It wasn't super greasy though. Just not a lot of flavor and the mushrooms just slid right out. HUGE portion of like 20 of the things though. Maybe the pork would be better. It was good with the sauce/pickled items that come with it. Service was good and we enjoyed watching the Kpop concerts on the TV as we are fans. Would definitely return here with a larger party to try more of the dishes and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Yelp
We loved it! HanJan is an absolute gem in Ann Arbor! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was inviting, pleasant, and relaxing--perfect for enjoying both great food and great company. We never felt rushed, which made for such an enjoyable dining experience. The service was fantastic--friendly, attentive, and accommodating, even with our group of seven. We ordered a variety of dishes, and every single one was a hit! The ramen was flavorful, the pan-fried mandu was crispy and delicious, and the corn cheese was a fun and tasty surprise. The Korean rice balls, Korean chicken stud, and pork tender plate were all perfectly prepared, but the standout for me was the veggie dumplings--they were absolutely delicious! Whether you're coming with friends, family, or would even be fun for a casual date night, HanJan is a must-visit spot. We can't wait to return and try even more of their amazing menu!

Yelp
I'm inspired to break my long Yelp silence to shout out this fun new restaurant in Ann Arbor. On entering you are greeted by disco lights and conversationally loud k-pop. The interior decor is also loud in the best way. On my visit i was excited to see fresh unflavored soju as well as a menu full of Korean comfort food. I ordered the stix (crispy and fluffy sugar-coated corndogs with a tangy ketchup) and the omelette which was cooked with a perfect texture. I really want this place to succeed. I love it on my first visit and there are so few un-stuffy restaurants in Ann Arbor.

Yelp
The first Pocha in town is here!! And how exciting that is! Considering it was the soft opening and the staff is still learning the menu and how to serve these dishes I won't take any points away for that, I'm just excited this late night Korean bar food concept is finally here. Love that they have table grills for future KBBQ offerings! Here's what we ordered and suggestions for things they can do: Pork belly: listed as served with kimchi and tofu but was actually served with udon noodles and no tofu which was fine because the dish itself was delicious but odd that the descriptions didn't match at all. It was also pretty spicy so I would be aware of that if you're not a spice lover like me! Kimchi fried rice: a little on the bland side and really benefited from the flavorful pork belly we had also ordered to elevate it. We also ordered a bottle of soju and Kloud beer to round out the meal, I was sad to see this pocha doesn't have beer towers available but I can really see them being a hit with the if they were offered! There's just something about a beer tower that feels so fun and playful when you're out drinking with friends. We will definitely be back especially once they have their kbbq grills going and can see us coming back for late night eats after a night out with friends!

Yelp
Super delicious every time I go! If you know anything about Korean culture or Pocha's you will soon realize this is like being transported directly into Seoul and to enjoy authentic food with a great vibe.

Yelp
Good vibes and good food with kpop playing in the background. I loved the rice beverage (maekolli) in the metal bowls! And the pork belly wraps (pork tender plate)!! Great place for large groups!! Definitely a fun and unique addition to Ann Arbor.

Yelp
I was disappointed by this spot. I was surprised we didn't get any banchan that I was used to getting from Korean restaurants all the time, but maybe because it was a pocha place and not a restaurant? Besides that, I just felt like the food was lacking. The army stew had ramen, rice cakes, spam, hot dog, silken tofu, fish tofu, Napa, refried beans but I was hoping for more veggies (box chop, mushrooms) or meat considering the price and rice wasn't complimentary with the stew. The rolled omelet was a little dry and not as creamy either. The aesthetic of the pocha was nice though.

Yelp
Chicken Tikka Masala was good. Naan was also good, but we didn't get much with the side order.

Yelp
Definitely a fun place to eat with delicious korean food! The staff is attentive and friendly, atmosphere seemed trendy and hip. The pork belly was very nicely done, my wife found her seafood ramen to be excellent. Cannot wait to visit again!

Yelp
Our first visit and we'll be back. The fun, quirky atmosphere was only surpassed by the food, which was surpassed by the excellent service. Jenna was one of the best waitresses we've had in years.

Yelp
It is a huge and cool space. Would be good for a crowd. The ramen was very good (quite spicy). The Korean chicken sticks were basically Costco corn dogs dipped in sugar, which was really gross. The glowing cocktails looked cool but had no flavor whatsoever. I think it doesn't quite know who its clientele is, as all the good sounding entrees are way too expensive for students.

JustBin O.

Yelp
Food was authentic and amazing. Setting is a cool karaoke vibe but not too much. For the amount of money you spend you get large filling portions. Be careful how much you order because me and my dad left with big belly's. Service was good and the staff was accommodating. Want Korean? Go here!

Eric W.

Yelp
Great place and would fully recommend! Fully leaned into the Korean atmosphere. So great!

Hannah H.

Yelp
I think this place has a lot of potential. Their food and drink menu is creative and fun. I understand they are still slow, but the server and manager asked us to leave over 30 minutes before close (advertised as 12am) They came over 3 times and asked us "are you done yet?" I understand it is frustrating to be slow, but if you are going to market yourself as being open late, this is no way to treat customers, especially those in a large party who are spending an exceptional amount on drinks.

Barbara M.

Yelp
Amazing food, great service and a very fun ambiance! Mild to spicy selections and all were so tasty. Best kimchi I have had in many years. Going back with friends this week!
