"Hanloh owner Lalita Kaewsawang previously cooked at his now-closed three-Michelin-starred Manresa. If the promise of top-notch Thai food including tom kha goong (white coconut curry with shrimp) and phla pla halibut isn’t enough to entice you, then how about the fact that Hanloh pop-ups inside a used bookstore-slash-natural wine bar? Reservations are available online though walk-ins are also accepted." - Eater Staff

"Chef Lalita Kaewsawang grew up in Chiang Mai before moving to Berkeley as a 13-year-old. Years later she found herself at Michelin star-holding Manresa and, in 2017, she launched Hanloh Thai Food. The upscale destination for confit pork belly and yum woonsen is a mainstay at Bad Animal in Downtown Santa Cruz, taking up a residency in fall 2022. Grab a table for fancy boneless chicken thighs and ongoing events and partnerships with other local makers." - Paolo Bicchieri, Garrick Ramirez, Eater Staff

Very loud music if that's your thing. It's a bookstore & restaurant. Not a family friendly joint I'd say. The food was ok. Quite limited, pricey menu and not exactly stellar Thai food. The curry portion is very small and the rice is an extra charge of $5. The grilled chicken dish is just 2 thighs, seasoned and grilled with a small cup of simple sour & spicy relish to dip in. Overall, would not go back.

Google
Hanloh Thai within Bad Animal books offers excellent food. The most efficient way to describe it is the tiramisu of Thai food. Light, fresh, but bold in flavor. The service is top notch, Hayden at the wine bar sets you up with excellent pairings with a unique wine selection. The atmosphere of the location within Bad Animal Books is cool and it makes you feel cool to be a part of it. We will continue to make this a staple for date night and always sit at the bar.

Google
One of those expensive hipster places but they do the dishes right. Hat yai chicken is prepared exactly how it should, marinated in fish sauce with a thin light coating. Yum woosen I have no experience with but is noodles in an acidic sauce with tofu and tomatos. The only complaint is the rice is mushy which is a travesty for $5 a bowl. It really should be done right.

Best Thai food we have ever experienced! The curry had deep flavors and everything tasted so fresh! We also loved the ambiance and interior decoration inside the great bookstore.

Google
Hanloh (I usually end up calling it "Bad Animal") is a must-try if you're in Santa Cruz for a nicer dinner. The food always makes me feel like I'm going on an adventure- a step away from take-out Thai as I know it. The service has never been anything less than stellar, and the environment is lovely. It feels trendy, because it is a bit trendy. But, the quality is undeniable. Delicious, delicious food. Last thing- they always have some sort of grilled/fried chicken on the menu. It's alright. Good if you have a picky eater with you, but you will not be talking about it after- I'd suggest you try something else.

Google
The vibe was amazing. The restaurant is located inside a bookshop that also sells wine, so while you're waiting, you can browse for books, which is a great way to pass the time. The food tasted great. The oysters, curry (Geang Kua), grilled chicken, and steamed fish were all on point. My favorites were the curry dish and the steamed fish. As a Thai, I can say the dishes felt like a fusion but still gave a sense of authentic Thai cuisine. The only drawback is the price. While the food is exceptional, the portions are too small for the high prices.

Google
Amazing food and great wine. One of the handful of best meals you can have in Santa Cruz. It is not cheap, but worth it - with one exception. Their rice is absurdly priced at $5 per portion - mean for a party of two you might end up spending $10 to get rice... It's just rice? Who eats curry without rice? It should be part of the meal.

Google
A great way to enjoy an elevated Thai meal. More expensive than your average Thai restaurant and 100% worth it for the quality ingredients in the incredibly prepared meals. The location is in a cozy and hip book store, lending to an intimate environment.

Yelp
Had an enjoyable time here eating dinner and browsing the books afterwards! I got a reservation for 6:30pm since I wasn't sure how crowded it would be - which was probably a good idea since this place isn't super big. Our waitress was polite and prompt, seating is immediately at a cozy corner table. We ordered two appetizers, the roti and glass noodle salad, and two entrees - fried rock fish and a chicken dish). Other than slightly high prices (a bowl of rice was $5 and needs to be ordered separately) we overall enjoyed visiting this renovated bookstore and wouldn't mind coming back to splurge for a date night!

Yelp
I am really mixed about this place. We have been looking to try it for a long while. Usually it's booked because we are last-minute deciders on where to eat. Finally made a same day reservation...but then we got there and mistakenly booked a different day! Hostess was super kind and seated us anyway. The wines were all odd and frankly not good. I tried three whites and none would have been repeats. Tried the yellow coconut curry with the beets. The base flavors were good but the beets didn't belong. It was very expensive for a plant based dish. My partner had the charred chicken thighs with the sauces...it was pretty blah. Didn't notice the marinade, it tasted plain. We were kind of underwhelmed but enjoyed the service and ambiance. The food does not match price point. They absolutely try. But it's not hitting the mark. Most of the reason people go seems to be the surroundings of the amazing vintage bookshop. Good hipster watching for sure. One thing that I value is the treatment of animals used in food. I was on instagram today and saw one of those horrific videos of a Japanese restaurant torturing live fish by pouring on liquor as they jumped in pain. I hate those videos and I was shocked to see the official instagram page of this restaurant liked it! Who likes totally unnecessary animal torture videos?

Yelp
Deep Fried Shrimp Wrapped w/ Wonton Noodles 3: four large pc, medium juicy, sweet spicy sauce, mild Double Fried Boneless Chicken Thighs 3: deep fried chicken, crispy, deboned, chopped, medium juicy, raw cucumbers, same sweet spicy sauce as above, mild *The 2 dishes were the exact same flavor; felt repetitive Ambience: 4 Service: 4

Yelp
Located inside a wine bar book store concept! Decently sized cozy space with a fun selection of older books. Very limited Thai food menu done well They take reservations.

Yelp
Thursday dinner Made reservations online the day before Small but focused menu of Thai cusine paired with a unique selection of wine. Ordered for 2: Appetizers: Nam Tok, $18, Nam Prik Lon, $23 Big plates: Tom Kha Goong, $31, Gai Tod Hat Yai, $31 Jasmine rice, $5 Two glasses of wine, $33 Total: $155+tip Everything was incredibly delicious. Service was great. Ambiance was unique, with the bookstore as the backdrop. Table seating was intimate. Prices are special occasion steep.

Yelp
Hanloh was on my list because not only did the chef/owner used to work at Manresa, we tried their food during the pandemic and I remember it being fantastic. I'm happy to report that Hanloh is still fantastic. Hanloh is part rare book store + wine bar + Thai restaurant. So yes, utterly charming. It was 100% our vibe. Above and beyond food. Understated elegance. Good service. I was beyond happy. Hubby and I got half a dozen oysters, a green curry with mushrooms, a red curry with perfectly seared scallops, rice, and the best dessert of 2023: warm candied kabocha pumpkin, salted coconut cream, pepita brittle, and toasted sesame seeds. It was so simple, but incredible. I had a glass of sparkling wine and then we decided to get a bottle of lambrusco for $48. It was perfect.

Claudia C.

Yelp
The service was very friendly and accommodating to fit three of us at a small table on the patio because that was all they had open at the time. We ordered the tofu dish, curry, and the fried chicken. It was all very good and I'm so glad we stumbled upon this place!

Clover E.

Yelp
We started at the bar while we waited for our table to be prepared. Extensive wine bar selections including beer and NA choices. I have been wanting to try a St Agresti Phony Negroni and it was good, though a bit sweet. For our meal, we had two starters and one entree. I had the roti (mild, rich, and delicious) and yum woonsen. (tangy and a little earthy). My dining partner had the pad phet talay which was spicy and delicious. We did not stay for dessert as the noise level was high and we wanted to talk, but the choices were enjoyed by those at the tables around us. I thought the prices were a little high but it's a good place for a splurge.

Mark C.

Yelp
We loved everything Hanloh has to offer: the vibe, the food, the service and the wine. The service in fact, was exceptional. We will definitely return. It was nice to browse and buy books after dinner as well.

Yelp
As another yelper so aptly put it, I was not prepared for how outstanding our meal was at Hanloh. We live in SF and we will happily be making the trip back out for the best Thai Food maybe in all of California? The US? Ever in the history of time? Good GOD we were blown away. Chef Lalita Kaewsawang, please, I beg of you, open a second shop in SF or fill the empty restaurant space on Chenery in Glen Park. Our little neighborhood would be thrilled to have you. Your food is incredible!!! I think I may have tasted the best chicken out there in this sweet little bookstore. Every bite of our menu (below) was a delicious adventure. Great wine and beer, too. We put our names in and waited 90 minutes and it was well worth the wait and then some. DO. NOT. MISS. THIS. SPOT. Menu: Mieng Som-O (filled nasturtium leaves) Phla Pa (Monterey Halibut) - spicy Nam Prik Lon (crabmeat dip) Boxing Chicken (MUST ORDER!!)

Anne Y.

Yelp
Incredible food in an amazing space. This restaurant is in residence at a rare and used book store and natural wine bar and it is beautiful. We tried the rockfish, boxing chicken, and turmeric curry which were their big plates for winter 2024. They were all delicious but the rockfish and boxing chicken are must tries! The small menu allows for focus and perfect execution of those dishes. The service was prompt and kind and calming. Overall highly recommend and we will be back!

Yelp
This place is such a vibe. Restaurant: Hanloh Thai Food Book store: Bad Animal This is a restaurant (Hanloh Thai Food) inside a book store (Bad Animal) or a book store inside a restaurant depending on who you're talking to. Whichever version you encounter, they will not fail you. Definitely make dinner reservations on their website if you are trying to catch the vibe. I felt transported back in my 20s but this time with 30 year old budgets. In the words of Cher, if I could turn back time... A little bit broody, dark yet unassuming. Food quality and taste is quite good though portions are a bit for the peckish. I agree with April's review in that the food is delicious and maybe authentic (current Chef is Lailita Kaewsawang previously of Manresa in Los Gatos with Thai roots)-be forewarned not to be misled into thinking to receive a typical Thai culinary experience (Pad Thai, yellow curry, pad se ew). I think the menu does change on so keep an eye on that and perhaps typical Thai mainstays appear from time to time (I noticed items in previous reviews no longer appeared when I enjoyed). We enjoyed their Winter 2024 Menu Food is made for sharing and we tried: - Mieng (coconut crisps and things with dried shrimp on betel leaves) - Nam Tok (mushroom lime-y salad) - Plaa Nueng Manao (steam black cod with sour lime-y broth) - Black sesame cake Great flavors and if we were hungrier we should have ordered maybe two more big plates. Funny side story: I originally planned a two top (two guests) reservation and then my guest bailed. I naively thought I could invite two other friends (four top) ON A FRIDAY at last minute by requesting three hours ahead. The gracious hostesses were kind in helping me make this attempt. Eventually time was running out and I was getting hungry so I dumped the party and was brought out of my delusion and kept the original reservation of 2. No regrets ghosting the half of the party (you snooze you lose!) and I appreciated the humor and smiles at the host desk. Definitely make reservations if it's over a party of 2. Party of 2 is possible for walk-ins if you want to try.

Yelp
Hands down the BEST Thai restaurant I have ever been to. I decided to go because it sounded like a fun, funky vibe. The space is part used bookstore, part wine bar, part restaurant. The space did not disappoint. But the food! Oh my god, I was not prepared for such an outstanding meal. I will be back and I will be bringing my friends.

Buster K.

Yelp
Good was amazing! As close to authentic as I've had since Thailand in a very long time! Keep up the good work

Yelp
Really more of a 4.5 Love the space they are in at Bad Animal - but reviewed that separately, just talking about the food here. Love that the menu is so simple - I actually like not making choices. Ha. For starter we got the Roti Mataba. Interesting flavor. Nice and crispy. For mains we got: Ob Woonsen: Pork was really good. Everything went together really nicely. This was the highlight of our meal. Plan Nueng Manao: Was a little underwhelmed on the flavor on this one. The broth was really simple and didn't add much flavor to the cod. Got the Vietnamese Chocolate Coffee Cake for desert. It was good, best part was the cashew brittle on top. Definitely high quality food all around.

Yelp
So I was in town solo for a wedding and decided to sit at the bar and order a few small dishes as I wasn't quite ravenous. Bartender recommended an excellent white wine (wish I could remember the name) and everyone sitting near me was chatty and friendly. The oysters were phenomenal and the star of the show was Nam prik lon. Bartender recommended I order w an extra side of shrimp crackers since I wasn't ordering a main. It was a good call. I nearly licked the bowl clean. The crab coconut relish was so tasty! The coconut, the lime, the crab, the saltiness, just heaven. And then I got to wander the bookstore afterwards...which is very tastefully curated. Would be a great spot for a date or a small gathering of friends. The atmosphere was perfect.

Yelp
Eating tasty Thai food in the Bad Animal Bookstore is a one of a kind experience, given a bookstore setting, complete with live DJ, and excellent wines. Our experience here is an enthusiastic 4.5. It's probably the most expensive Thai food we've eaten, at $35 for one serving of Ob Woonsen a pork belly and crab dish with glass noodles and a terrifically spicy sauce, but the dishes' ingredients were extravagant. The setting and service are both top notch. We understand the kitchen here is female run, which we love. We ate up and down the menu, including the traditional fresh thai mieng appetizer rolled in a beetle leaf with dried shrimp, ginger, fresh lime, peanut and coconut with a tamarind sauce and a sweet potato roti to start, a tofu curry as a second main, and the bread pudding and the tapioca accompanied with a sour tasting granita for our dessert. We recommend the mieng, the warm yellow curry, and the bread pudding dessert as our favorite orders. All food here can be paired with an extensive wine list, which is unusual for Thai food (but shouldn't be!) or with a creative organic non-alcoholic soda. A fun, urban-feeling, well orchestrated and spendy special night out in Santa Cruz.

Yelp
Hanloh Thai Food started as a pop-up transitioning to a current incubator-type relationship with Bad Animal Bookstore and Winebar. Hanloh has the kitchen and BA has the front end. A marriage that works as you can get great food with a laid back vibe with a wide selection of wine choices backed by eclectic musical selections. The bookstore is cool too and has a back room library that can serve as a more private dining room. Tables are casually set up surrounded by books of course while a wine and dining bar is set up in the right as you walk in. We opted for the wine bar which has full menu and sat closest to the kitchen. Better yet to see the actual food coming out of the kitchen to support our food wants. The bar spot was our own Chef's Counter as we could see all of the kitchen activity. So what sells here, ie correlating to what's good here? The wine which if you sit at the counter allows for some sampling before making a selection. The appetizer, small plates with the popular "Mieng", a betel leaf concoction topped with a vegetarian mixture that has flavor and texture. Has coconut and peanuts for those with allergy concerns. "Larb" which is a more traditional minced pork and salad green dish was also tasty. For more substantial fare, there's a "Vegan" or "Crab Meat / Pork Belly" Clay pot both having a sweet soy glass noodle base. A half chicken basted with coconut milk and lime was also available that night. Only one item for dessert that night - Coconut Ice Cream with Sticky Rice. Dish put together by the same person who does the Mieng. Overall, we had a great dining experience sitting at the bar with good food. A little pricey but worth helping a female owned start-up.

Yelp
I came here on one of my first dates with my boyfriend. Upon entering, they had some great old school 90's underground hip hop playing. The lighting was perfect and what's not to love about Thai food inside of a dreamy book store...the ambiance was "chef's kiss". We ordered the oysters and the sauce they came with...I'm still craving it! We also had a curry dish and noodles! Our waitress was super friendly and knowledgeable about wine pairings which was appreciated. We liked her recommendation and it went nicely with our meal.

Keith G.

Yelp
Random bookstore / wine bar attempting to serve Thai haute cuisine. But fails miserably. After each bite, one begins to wonder why the dishes are so expensive and overpowered by a single dominant flavor of lemon grass in a bohemian bookstore setting, with songs spun from the 1960s. The place lacks focus and the service was spotty for the price of $30+ entrees. On a positive note, they had a great selection of soft pornography books & magazines which may comfort diners while trying to comprehend why this place is so alice in wonderland random and not focused on Thai food. If this place could offer one other random service it would be dog grooming to compliment the Thai food experience. Caveat Emptor

Yelp
Hands down the best Thai food that you are going to find in the area, if not the entire South Bay. I worked with Lalita and her team on a catering event earlier this year and it was one of the best culinary decisions ever. We started communicating towards the end of 2021 but wouldn't have our event until early 2022. Throughout the months, Lalita kept constant communication with me and made the entire process of setting up our event a breeze. Her team's Thai food is beyond delicious. There are a variety of meat, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free options that you can truly cater to your audience. Our catering event was simply having the food delivered in party trays but the small touches Lalita placed in the order really made it special. She created small food placards and menus with ingredients and common allergens listed, making it easy for guests to decide what they want to enjoy. Best option: Vegetable Green Curry. My goodness, this curry was fantastic and completely blew all the curries I've had in the Bay Area out of the water. The flavors and consistency of the veggies was absolutely perfect and no other curry I have is going to compare to these. I was able to also enjoy the Vegan Lemongrass Noodle Salad with Tofu and the Mushroom Laarb. As a party tray, the salad was a bit challenging to serve unless you had time to mix everything prior. The elements in the salad were great but I probably would stick to another item in the future. I also loved the laarb and all of the unique flavors complimented with each other well, and the variety of mushrooms was delicious. The only small challenge we had was that Lalita arrived a few minutes before our event started (and when guests had arrived), so it made it a bit more frantic in getting everything ready to served. However, traffic happens so this was not a major issue - just wish we had more time to get everything together and mix the noodle salad properly to have it be served. That aside, Hanloh has truly captured my heart and I would love to be able to cater with them again. Admittedly, they are definitely on the pricier end when it comes to catering, but for the homemade quality Thai food, sometimes it's worth to splurge on a fantastic meal. Thank you Lalita!

Yelp
Oysters were probably the best I have ever had. We also had the nam tok which was super delicious and the Plaa nueng mango and the Gai tod hqt Yai.. will be coming here 100% again. My favorite Thai food ever

Isabella T.

Yelp
One of the more interesting restaurant settings I've been in - Thai food in a book store. We got their 30 min till closing and they were still able to accommodate us so props to the kitchen staff! Small menu but you know they take care of making the best out of these few options. We got the larb and the Ob Woonsen - two very good choices. Larb was herbaceous and umammiii from the fish sauce. Ob woonsen was very tasty and layer. Sweet crab went well with the savory pork belly, noodles were tasty and supper filling. The sauce for the Ob woonsen was deliciously spicy - we put it on everything. It has this earthy spice (and I mean spice!) that I'd never tasted before. It's pretty damn loud in there though which was the only downside. Very very very hipster vibes. But it's cute, very cute.

Carid S.

Yelp
The food was amazing! I recommend the Pad Prik Khing, the meat was so tender and had so much flavor!

Ron T.

Yelp
I went there on Wednesday night, and the place was busy and packed. The service was good, and the food took a long time to get out, and they came out one at a time, another words. One dinner came out first, and later came the second food. The food and flavors were awesome, So all and all I deducted one star, because of some inconsistencies. Overall, it's a great experience.

The Miracle Spot S.

Yelp
We absolutely love Hanloh! We've been waiting for an authentic Thai restaurant to open in Santa Cruz, and Lalita's delicious dishes far exceeded our expectations. It reminded us of our meals at Pim's Michelin starred Kin Khao in San Francisco. We hope they find a permanent location in Santa Cruz so we can enjoy meals there all the time in the decades to come. Lalita's work ethic and drive to succeed are second to none. We love supporting women-owned businesses and will be telling all our friends and family to visit Hanloh.

Ramy H.

Yelp
There weren't many recent reviews and not much info regarding current offerings. Decided to give it a try anyway since we were in the area. We pulled up to the area the GPS led us and there was a farmers market in the parking lot. We were instructed to park across the street. We obliged and crossed the road to find a sign with their current menu. It's a super limited menu. Was hoping for a yellow curry or something similar but it wasn't offered. We decided to still give it a try. We asked for the Pad Thai on the menu and we're informed that they were out. They only had 4 entrees to begin with... and now they're out of 1 out of the 4?! We decided to leave and head to our favorite Thai restaurant that was just 10 minutes away. Maybe we'll give this place a try but I hope they update their website as well as their menu offerings. Or if the name of their game is in a few core items like In-n-out burger ... don't run out of a Thai staple like Pad Thai!

Jen S.

Yelp
Outstanding food, service and ambiance. This was our first visit and definitely not our last. I went here on a date with my husband and it was perfect. Our lovely server was attentive and helpful. Food came out at the perfect pace so we could relax and enjoy ourselves but also feed our bellies in a timely manner. Great local beer selections too. I can't wait to return! Thank you!

Brian S.

Yelp
Greeted by a funky and cozy environment, and helpful friendly people who explained the dining/bookstore concept. Food seemed inventive, fresh, and new. The halibut crudo was on target as an appetizer. Both mains were lovely. Nice that they let us try wines that are served by the glass before choosing one. The wine list is extensive and somewhat eclectic, including classics and also many orange wines.

Michele V.

Yelp
What a surprise. We just wanted Thai food, so we looked up a new place to go here in Santa Cruz. As it turned out, Hanloh is at Bad Animal, the wine bar/bookstore downtown. The food is a bit upscale. Delicious and innovative.

Hannah S.

Yelp
Phenomenal spot nestled in out skirts of downtown Santa Cruz. Delicious, fresh, and exciting Thai food. The ambience is lovely and very unique. Wonderful service and staff! Would recommend to make reservations or call ahead of time to see the wait time, it can be a busy spot.

Grace H.

Yelp
Absolutely my fav place to dine in SC and one of the few places I consistently recommend. I bring all my out of town visitors here whenever I can bc the food will blow your mind, the wines are good, and vibes are immaculate. It's inside Bad Animal which has cool, artsy kid vibes without being obnoxious about it. It's cute enough to be a special occasion place but somehow also casual enough to also be a drop in on a random weeknight kinda place. Idk, it's magic. The staff are all really great. I've never had a meh dish here but always get the fried chicken.

Monica M.

Yelp
We loved everything we got! The curry had so much depth of flavor, truly delicious! It was kind of a small portion for such an expensive dish but that was my only complaint. The prices in general were very high but you can tell the ingredients are so high quality and fresh that it ultimately is worth it but only for a special night out in my opinion. The Ob Woonsen with pork belly and crab was delicate and nuanced. This was really the star of the show for me. The wine was also fantastic.

Isabelma D.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing, from the food, service , and atmosphere I couldn't have been happier with my experience. It fits any vibe you need from a fun date night to a relaxing meal with friends. If you have a chance you have to try it.

Aaron I.

Yelp
Love Hanloh's food and the new location. Don't get it twisted, this isn't jus Thai food, it's elevated Thai food using the best ingredients. With the rotating menu, it is hard to choose favorites, but her sea bass in the claypot is probably one of my favorites. I guess it's not that new anymore, the Bad Animal ambiance is perfect for Hanloh. Lively but not loud, perfect atmosphere to pair with a glass of wine and this food. It would be nice to see the menu expanded and I'm sure the community would love it and support.

Yelp
Overall, I had a poor experience at this restaurant in Bad Animal. From food, to service, to ambiance, all aspects of our experience left a negative impression. I never leave reviews but this was so especially bad that I felt compelled to. Food: We ordered three savory dishes and one dessert. 1. "Mieng" was a set of 3 small nasturtium leaf wraps with toasted coconut, peanuts, lemongrass, apples, ginger, shallots, tamarind sauce. They were falling apart, composed of chunky items rough the size of a peanut and these items were not held together. This made the wrap awkward to eat, as it was a small round leaf filled with large loose items that had to be corralled, lest they fall out either end. To to add to the awkwardness, the wraps arrived already dripping out excessive tamarind sauce. The items should have been lightly crushed in a mortar and pestle or chopped finer and held together by some kind of a binder--perhaps some sticky rice. 2. "Yum makua" was a small salad on a bed of fire-roasted eggplant , with minced pork, fish sauce, celery leaf, mint, fried shallot, cilantro. The dish again was unbalanced. The pork had a overly-strong aroma of pork characteristic of "boar taint," and this flavor was not balanced out by the aromatics. It should have been cooked with plenty of lime leaf and the sauce should have had more lime juice. It also sorely needed more mint, cilantro, and celery leaf. It also lacked fresh allium to balance out the heavy pork flavor, such as minced shallots and scallions. And strangely the mint was cut in a chiffonade, when it most certainly should have been torn to limit oxidation and preserve a fresh flavor. 3. "Gai Tod hat yai" was "coriander rubbed" fried chicken thighs, served with a Laotian roasted tomato relish. First of all, the chicken itself was bland and slightly dry, and had minimal coriander flavor. It needed an accompaniment but unfortunately became nearly inedible when dipped in the sauce. The sauce was overpoweringly salty. I know Laotian food can sometimes be salty but this was beyond that and unreasonable. We had a couple of bites and did not touch the rest. When our server came to ask us if we were done after a while, we said yes we were done, and that no, we did not want a box. I even added, "this dish is not working. It is overly salty and not balanced." The server ignored me, avoiding eye contact and continued clearing the plates. The server did not apologize, inquire further, or defend their cooking, and, of course, they charged us all the same when it was time for the bill. Despite a poor track record we decided to try dessert, partly because we still held a kind of cruel optimism that the restaurant would redeem itself, and partly because we simply needed to cleanse our palate after an extremely salty dish. Water alone wasn't cutting it, and something sweet helps to relieve an overly salty taste. We ordered the pavlova which was composed of a meringue topped in strawberry & rhubarb compote, lime cream, toasted coconut. Unfortunately, the meringue was not optimally fresh--it tasted a bit stale, as if it had been sitting around for too long in the humidity of the Santa Cruz air--definitely not freshly made. The dish did the job at cleansing the overly salted palate but was quite forgettable and poorly executed. Service: The nadir of the service was the moment I complained about a dish and the server ignored my complaint without any sign of recognition or apology. This was characteristic of our entire experience that night, disaffected service in which the front of house and the servers seemed like they could barely bother to give us any thought or attention. This happened from the moment we arrived when we said that we came for our reservation, and we received no acknowledgment or response while the front of house person did something or other and came back a few minutes later. Ambiance: This is the least important aspect for me personally but somehow they still managed to offend. Visible piles of dust and debris in the corners of the room, below their sofa, a very dirty rug. All these issues make one feel icky and question whether or not this establishment ever sweeps and mops their floor, and whether that lack of cleanliness translates into their kitchen.

Yelp
A bit too vibey food is clean but portions are small. Primarily for drinking wine. Service is decent, nice people, many books. Weird dead animal on wall.

Yelp
Great Thai food. Great ambiance. Inside Bad Animal. Expensive but tasty and well presented. A well heeled crowd as you might expect. Service was friendly and more than adequate. Will go back again - probably on a special occasion ......

Yelp
Awesome popup restaurant you might see just about anywhere for all I know. We caught them at Sante Adairius one night. The menu was short--three items. Super cheap; everything was $12 or so. The dishes were big enough to get full like they were an entree, and just small enough to eat more than you should and split another plate. Each dish had tons of explosive flavor, with that hot-sour-salty-sweet combo to the seasonings that you get from the best Thai food. It didn't seem dumbed-down for milquetoast/American tastes at all. The owner was working, and kept her crew humming despite high demand and only two available burners. She really keeps things organized, and she is super talented with recipes. I hope to find her food again someday in future travels, and I'm envious of you if you get to eat her food.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants in Santa Cruz. Really awesome wine bar too. Love this place!

Yelp
Just ordered from Hanloh for the first time this week. We did all the gluten free options. My husband picked up so he could grab some of his favorite beers at Sante. The instructions to reheat at home were super easy to follow. A few notables, the green curry was the best I have ever had and I am not a big curry fan AND the the ginger chili is a must! I am excited to try it again and look forward to the new weekly menu.

Yelp
I have been to a number of Hanloh popups in the past several years. The food is always wonderful! Lalita is a great chef, and knows her craft. I understand that because of the pandemic, they have just been doing catering and delivery of prepared food. However, in the past I have been to some of their sit-down, full-course dinners (two in San Francisco), and they are always fantastic!

Yelp
Han Loh is a simply divine food pop up/catering thingy what brings the awesome. Normally I start with parking tips as in the bay area easy convenient parking is not something you can assume will be possible. However this is a pop up so parking will be whatever is there at the brewery/market/party/whatever that you are going to. Ditto for the seating. Service is of the order and pick up when called model. Be advised that this is made fresh to order when ordered, so it'll be ten to twenty minutes after ordering before it comes out. Also know that the word is out about how delicious this place is, so there will be a line. On the bright side the owner is a savvy, smart, highly organized businesswoman along with being a superb cook, and has streamlined the process as much as possible. Also also this food is so good it's worth any amount of waiting. So pop ups/food trucks live by the food and maaaannnn Hanloh does not disappoint. The menu is subject to change on the season/whim of the chef but generally speaking there will be a meat dish, a salad of some kind-like papaya salad-and a vegan/vegetarian plate. No matter what you chose it'll be awesome. So if they run out of pork dumplings before you get to order don't sweat it. Just order whatever they have and go with it. Hanloh does not make bad or ordinary food. It's exquisitely perfect. Every.Single.Time. I've had the shumai dumplings(christmas market, and yeah I know that's not Thai exactly but the chef does not consider herself strictly limited by genre. She cooks as she sees fit and thank god for that.), fried chicken (at the night market), Khao Mun Gai (chicken rice), Tom Kha served curry style with oyster mushrooms (vegan. tangy, spicy, chewy and oh so wonderful.) and spicy mixed almonds which made a perfect pairing for the beer we were drinking at the brewery (Sante Adairus if you must know. The monday before they took October off) and all of it was worth every penny and minute spent. Seriously if you have the chance to hit these guys up do so. They are the very definition of five stars.

Yelp
We're on the mailing list so that we can try to catch up with Hanloh wherever and whenever they are making food. They have been at Sante Adarius most regularly on Monday nights, but we've also seen them at the Food Lounge. The food is always excellent, never boring or familiar, always full of flavor and spice. There are usually just a few items, and we end up starting with one of everything, and then going back for more of whichever we liked the best! It's definitely worth following them to find out where they will be - they also do catering, which I've never experienced, but can imagine would also be excellent.

Yelp
We ordered our meal here through a promotion with real good fish (who delivered) and the food was spectacular. I grew up with authentic Thai food so my bar is pretty high. I have been looking forward to ordering again and just put an order in for Valentine's day. The only thing holding me back from ordering weekly is the drive. I wish they delivered to my area. The food is so fresh and is the best Thai I've had in the Bay Area. That's pretty impressive since I've lived on the peninsula and worked in DT SF. I now live in the Santa Cruz Mountains and am so happy I have such a delicious Thai food restaurant in Scotts Valley.

Yelp
Just finished our first meal from Hanloh...OMG, it was SO GOOD. As soon as we finished eating we sat down to place our order for next week before they sold out. This is the best Thai food we've had in years, and we know our way around Thai food! The food was all very fresh and clean tasting, and we like how they vary the menu offerings on a weekly basis. The reheating instructions were very clear and easy to follow, Lalita came out and met me at the car as I pulled up to the Scotts Valley location...the whole process was very quick and pleasant. Can't wait for next week!

Yelp
I would give Lalita and her crew 10 stars if I could. I moved to SV three months ago and while I've enjoyed every other part of living here was seriously missing the variety and quality of food available over the hill. There are no words to describe how AMAZING Lalita's food is. It's better than what I remember from my trip to Thailand decades ago and dare I say comparable if not BETTER than what I've had in SF in recent years. SO incredibly fresh, and flavors that are unlike anything I've had in even the best Thai restaurants. What's amazing is how well thought out and prepared everything is so that the reheating from home is simple and doesn't take away from the taste or texture. Following the simple instructions provided with every order produces absolutely flawless results. I'm extremely critical of food and every thing I've ordered from her blows me away. I've ordered every weekend for the last 4 weeks and every order is better than the last. Additionally, I've been trying to move away from meat for a long time. I rarely feel completely satisfied from any completely vegetarian meal. I've ordered the vegan and vegetarian options from Hanloh several times and could imagine being vegetarian if I could eat her food every day! I also screwed up and misread the delivery and pick up instructions the first two times I ordered and even forgot/didn't see the tip field (mortified). Lalita was SO incredibly gracious and accommodating. I love EVERYTHING about you guys!! Sundays are now my favorite feed-my-face day

Yelp
If I could eat this kind of food every day I would. It is delicious and healthy. It's about the only thing that makes me miss living in Fresno.
