Best Korean Restaurants in Boston | Eater Boston

"This classic Korean restaurant has seen businesses come and go on Harvard Avenue, one of the most competitive strips for restaurants in Boston. Its signature menu item is the gamjatang, a type of soup made by stewing the backbones of pigs for many hours. At Hanmaru, you can order your gamjatang spicy or plain; you can also choose from a number of add-ons, such as sliced beef and fish balls, to go in the soup." - Erika Adams

Google
We ordered the large Mala Gamjatang and the Seafood Pancake. The Seafood Pancake was chewy and crisp and yummy! The Mala Gamjatang meat was really delicious but overall the soup lacked some flavor I would say. Definitely good for a cold night!

Google
We ordered spicy jokbal with corn cheese and soft tofu stew (soondubu) Food was really great and our server was very nice!! Four side dishes were great too. Will visit next time for sure!!!

The food was awesome!! Personally my favorite Korean restaurant in Boston; wished that I had tried Hanmaru earlier; would definitely go back. The seafood pancake was phenomenal! The service was good too; didn’t rush us at all. Overall very good experience!

Had the house special gamjatang and it was very yummy! Service was great as well. Will definitely come back again

A friend and I visited Hanmaru for dinner, and it was delicious. We ordered a medium Gamjatang and Jokbal bokum and was served by our wonderful waiter Himang. I highly recommend this restaurant, and I think that this is the best Korean restaurant here in Boston that I’ve had so far. My Korean friend said that the food here is almost exactly identical to the restaurants back home. 100% recommend!!! Also the music choice here is absolutely immaculate!!

The food came out really fast and it really tasted like authentic korean food. Would recommend if you’re looking for good Korean food!!

Google
one of the best, hidden korean cuisine in Allston. We tried the new bossam. I've had this in Seoul Sullungtang across the street but honestly better both in price and quality. Friendly staff and cozy/authentic korean vibe.

Google
My first time trying Korean food, and what a feast it was. The broth with the pork spine was amazing, the pork was juicy and tender and the broth rich and salty. The seafood pancakes are now one of my favourite things ever: they were incredible. The meat was tender and juicy. Service was quick, and the meal was quite cheap considered all we ate.

Yelp
Another Korean restaurant on Harvard Ave known for their gamjatang soups. It's a small restaurant, so I would go here with a large group of people, but I'd definitely recommend coming with a friend or two to try out all the dishes. My most recent visit we got the gamjatang, jokbol, bibimbap, and seafood pancake. The soup broth is very flavorful and the meat falls off the bones. The seafood pancake was crispy. We had leftovers of jokbol with all the food that we ordered. The service was good and I would recommend trying this place out if you're looking for a warm cooked Korean meal.

Yelp
Decent Korean food place, nothing mind blowing but good. They mainly specialize in gamja-tang, bossoms, and pork feet dishes. We only tried their gamja-tang and it was good, the pork was very tender. The medium size it pretty big and can definitely be shared by 2-3 people. The spicy squid was okay, and the galbi was good. The service was just alright, nothing impressive and when I asked the server if there's shrimp powder used in the seasoning of the soup.. because a lot of Korean dishes use shrimp powder regardless of it being a meat dish (used in the spicy seasoning ex: kimchi) he didn't bother to check with the kitchen/and was a little rude about it. But I was just checking since I have an allergy A good amount of seating at the restaurant, reservations are available if you want to be safe but it didn't seem like you needed to make any if you have a smaller group. If you like any of their specialty items they offer, I would say check it out!

Yelp
I'm not sure why this place has a 3.7-star rating; I personally thought it deserved a solid 8.5/10. The owner was the only one hosting and taking everyone's orders, and he did an amazing job. He was very attentive to our table, making sure we had everything we needed. We were a party of three and ordered the Hanmaru Signature Gamjatang Large. Flavor-wise, it was quite light yet hearty, and there was more than plenty for the three of us. We also tried the pig's feet, which, in my opinion, had a better flavor than the soup. We didn't realize they closed at 9 until we checked our phones and the owner wasn't in a rush in kicking us out. I would definitely recommend this place to others and would go again!

Yelp
We always come here for the Gamjatang. The portion is huge and there are so many things included such as glass noodles and tofu. The normal gamjatang is a little spicy. The Japchae was slightly sweet and delicious. The Bossam Jokbal combo came with lettuce for DIY wraps. Everything came out super fast and we didn't have any trouble finding seating even as a larger party.

Yelp
It's been too long since I've come here but sadly it wasn't like how I remembered it to be. Overall, the meal was still yummy but a few ingredients were skimped out this time. The pot no longer includes tofu and the potatos are sliced thinner (I know I sound super picky) but I feel like those changes impacted the experience. The broth got weirdly thick after like 20min since the potatoes almost disintegrated into the soup. And I'm just sad that they no longer include tofu :( it's still available as an add on. This is a one of a kind spot for Boston so I still recommend it if you're craving a bowl of hot soup!

Yelp
On a Wednesday evening, a group of 6 (including myself), went to Hanmaru for dinner. Since we had a reservation at 715, we received seating immediately. The entire table ended up ordering family style, getting corn cheese ($12), a seafood pancake ($14), the Hanmaru Signature Gamtajang ($43, large size), tofu kimchi ($17), and a dolsot bimbimbap (which I didn't get to try). The table received rice and banchan w/in 5 minutes, and plates streamed in over the next 10 minutes. The corn cheese tastes exactly as one would expect. Arriving on a hot plate proved a nice touch. It did seem overpriced, however. The seafood pancake seemed lackluster. It did not have much seafood, tasting more like a too-lightly salted scallion pancake. Also, its form factor, precut squares, gave the illusion of small portion size. Perhaps an optical illusion, but it proved visually unsatisfying. The Gamjatang, a pork neck bone stew and Hanmaru's signature dish, arrived on a large sukiyaki-like bowl placed in the center of the table, which had a burner to keep the stew hot. The stack of vegetables and spices could not effectively hide that the stew only had 6 pieces of pork neck bone. The soup itself, while flavorful, seemed low in volume. I would have much liked having double that amount to get some decent bowls of stew in. The tofu kimchi proved delicious and savory. It's essentially a spicy pork, kimchi, and rice cake stir fry topped with tofu.

Yelp
This is the only place in Boston I've had gamjatang and I LOVEE IT. It's not too big of a place but I never had to wait. The service is great; we get plenty of side dishes as well and refills too. Their signature gamjatang is my go-to. The broth is flavorful! Definitely a place to go if you wanna have a family style meal.

Yelp
I have wanted to go to this local spot in Allston to try the jokbal(pig feets) for the first time. It feels very homey inside like your moms about to cook for you with a small menu of classic korean comfort foods. They have apps, meat and even hot pot on the menu. I really enjoyed the jokbal which reminded me of the texture of pork belly and was very flavorful. We got the spicy version but it honestly was like a 1-2 spiciness. Galbi was rich in flavor as well, just a little bit of a tug or war in regards to the chewiness. Our waiter was helpful with letting us know about the jokbal options and re-checking what my friend could have because she had a seafood allergy. They also listed on the menu allergies icons for seafood, pork, beef, etc which was nice. Korean food is always a little pricey but I always forget about that as our bill was almost $70 for two entrees that don't come with rice. But, you can ask for it free of charge. Good portions and good taste would go here on a monday night for a relaxing dinner. Food Jokbal bokum LA Galbi Prices $$ Food 7 Atmosphere 5 Service 8

Yelp
This is definitely a gem in the neighborhood! Feels like having home cooked meal at Hanmaru. Decent price, good portion, flavorful food and friendly staff. What more can you ask for?! The kalbi is a must order. The hotpot was great especially on a cold rainy day. Jap Chae with seafood is another option if you're not into rice. This is not a fancy restaurant but it's clean and cozy. Will come back for sure!

Yelp
Came by with a friend around 1pm on a Saturday - the place is not that big and was pretty busy but thankfully there was a table open for us! Ordering was also smooth as well - there's an option to order and pay online directly via the menu link, but they can also take your order in person too. We ordered the yuk gae jang, corn cheese, dolsot bibimbap, and stir-fried spicy pork. Yuk gae jang was not bad! Shredded beef was super tasty but the broth was a bit too oily, and I personally would have preferred some more noodles for the portion size. Corn cheese was a bit flat - it tasted much like a bowl of creamed corn with some melted mozzarella on top; not bad in an absolute sense, but not really what I expected from corn cheese. Stir-fried spicy pork was fantastic - pork was tender, veggies were well-cooked, and portion size was great. And, it was nice that everything was really spicy (as we wanted!). Lastly the bibimbap was pretty good too - beef had a good juicy flavour and the fresh veggies, gochujang, and egg paired really nicely with the large portion of rice for a very filling bowl overall. Price point was not the lowest, but the portion sizes were very large (e.g. if we had come with a few more people it would definitely have been very worth it to share amongst more people). They seem to specialise in the gamjatang which we didn't get this time, but I'd love to try it out on my next visit. Looking forward to it!

Yelp
The food taste amazing especially the spicy chicken thigh, and the server is really nice and patient. This is the best Korean food I've ever had

Yelp
Hanmaru does not have a really large menu, so I only come here when I feel like having gamjatang. I ordered the Gamjatang B to share with my friends. They also served us banchan that included about four different dishes. I did enjoy how they gave me a bucket for the bones alongside gloves and utensils to help scoop different ingredients from the pot. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the lack of soup present. The pot is quite big, but the soup is only filled to the halfway point, so you are left with some ingredients not even soaked in the soup. Most of the bones did not have much meat clinging to them. I also wish there was a bit more of each ingredient. The potatoes were especially scarce, and even if they were present, they were only about half the size of my palm. I also felt that the flavoring of the soup was not that prominent nor rich, which made it less impactful. Service was fine as they left you alone until you needed them. Once you wave them down, they are responsive and fast at meeting your needs. Overall, this experience felt a bit lackluster, so I am not inclined to come back when there are other Korean restaurants in the area.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE this place! You must come here. It is located in Allston-Brighton near the CVS. They work like machines in the back truly! It's quite incredible. A very small holes in the wall place with BIG flavors! They're super attentive Korean place that consistently stays busy! It's a must! I got the personal bowl that includes rice, bone, potatoe and tofu! I added veggies and it comes with sides of rice, macaroni, kimchi and so much more!
google avatar

Yelp
Got the jokbal and the gamjatang. I think i would only get these two here since ive heard the other options arent as good.
google avatar

Annilyn T.

Yelp
It was a good experience to summarize it but the only downside was our server was not paying attention and he almost forgot one of our orders and we had to flag him down. They were busy eating in the back and didn't even ask if we need some water or anything else. They also didn't have the order of soup that we wanted originally which was a little disappointing. But it's fine the soup we got was pretty good too. We went later in the night for dinner, and it was a good pick! The area inside was not that spacious but I feel like they have authentic taste for korean food. the service was so so, sometimes you have to find a way to grab their attention for you to get what you want to ask. Celebrated my friends birthday there and I think we made the right choice.

Yelp
This place should have five stars!! Super authentic Korean food that is known for their Gamjatang (Korean style pork back bone soup). Been here a few times w/ friends and we've loved it every time. Service is fast and friendly. The broth is so rich and so flavorful. The portions are huge as well. The most recent time the three of us came in and got the gamjatang for three with an extra bone and it was $50 total, all of us left very full. I don't know how their other dishes are, but if you come get the gamjatang!
google avatar

Phuong L.

Yelp
Overall 3.5/5. It depends on what you get! The spicy squid and bibimbap were pretty good but my friends got tofu stew and katsu ... which were not that good. Katsu was too salty and tofu stew didn't have much flavor.
google avatar

Charlie F.

Yelp
Been here a few times and when you come here to eat, definitely order the Gamjatang - the Korean style pork back bone soup - and you will not regret your decision. First off, you get the side dishes you can continue reorder if you finish. Secondly, the Gamjatang is a warming and soothing spicy soup filled with tofu, veggies, potatoes and pork back bone. Thirdly, the pork back bone has an immense amount of meat and when you think you're finished digging out the meat, there are more in the crevices, nooks and crannies in the bones. And fourthly, there will be typically four pork back bones and a fifth if you're lucky. Imagine all the mouth-watering meat in front of you... A recommendation (and I know you might wanna dive right into the soup) is to let the soup come to a boil so that the pork back bone and its meat are warmed, softened and further loosened so that the work to extract is lessened. When you let this happen (and I can understand you may be salivating and might not be able to wait long enough), you will be rewarded with tender meat in a spicy soup. This is always great for colder days.
google avatar

Nan K.

Yelp
The Gamjatang was delicious! I loved the depth of flavor that the broth has and the meat was perfectly tender. It was filling for 2 but I got a bit tired of how rich everything was after a while. We had to send it back once and received a new pot. But the service there definitely has room for improvement.
google avatar

Yelp
I came here with my friend last year. I have not gone back since. Their food is okay and service is all right. However, one thing that really made me wary was the fact that there were flies swarming around. It was a balance between keeping a conversation going with my friend, and fending the flies from landing on our food. It was definitely an experience to remember.
google avatar

HaeIn K.

Yelp
We visited this place dinner time on weekend. Quite spacious and not that many customers in the restaurant. I ordered cold noodle. They are okay except for most of the noodles attached to each other and difficult to separate them...
google avatar

Maggie Z.

Yelp
The spicy chicken wings we ordered were not really good. They were dry and we all just took one bite and never touched it again. They were all different sizes too. It seems like they just cut a whole chicken and fried it. It was also not spicy at all when we asked for the spicy version. The kimchi pancakes were pretty good and I think the best thing I ordered there. Jjamppong was decent and came with a lot. However, my tofu chigae was not that good. There wasn't much flavor or spice. It tasted like the watered down broth of jjamppong. I'm always craving some good Korean tofu soup but it's actually hard to find them in the Boston area.
google avatar

Vivian S.

Yelp
Stopped by as one stop in my vegan bibimbap tour of Allston. I would rank this mid tier out of the three restaurants I've tried so far. They had a decent amount of veggies, tofu, and a large ish serving of rice. The veggies were nothing special though, but at least not completely flavorless. Because I have had better bibimbap for the same price or less elsewhere, i would not come back here. That being said they do have other food options and they were quite busy in a Friday night. The staff were very nice though, and overall chill vibes.

Yelp
No frills spot. Service ok. Food was ok. Tried the signature pork bone soup hot pot. Mild spicy was pretty spicy. It was a tasty dish. The japchae wasn't great. All the noodles were stuck in one massive clump you couldn't get apart to dish out.
google avatar

Melanie W.

Yelp
A nice place to go to eat on a cold day to keep your body warm. Gamjamtang is the main reason coming here since there aren't many places that served pork bone stew. We ordered set b which come with 4 pork bones, we ended up getting 5. It come with watercress, napa, tofu, and bean sprouts. The spicy is just enough but the stew had too much msg that makes me really thirsty, drinking water nonstop. The side dishes are kind of fusion since it come with cold pasta and mash potatoes. Seafood pancake was okay but wish it is ponzu sauce instead soy sauce. The jokbal is too soft since it boiled too long. Japchae which had too much pepper for seasoning which I don't really like it. Food really served fast.
google avatar

Kobe Z.

Yelp
This small restaurant had a lively atmosphere. We came on a Saturday evening and the place was full. We ordered the budae jungol hot pot, and for around $30, it was a filling meal for two. The side dishes provided a nice variety of appetizers. The soup was flavorful but a bit salty and there was a good portion of luncheon meats. Overall, Hanmaru checks out as a great restaurant with a homely atmosphere.
google avatar

Hubert H.

Yelp
Went straight for the gamjatang, the significant large pork bone broth dish, like a soup, with tofu, vegetables, and the large pork bones (!). I wasn't super crazy about the flavoring of the soup, and the broth overall was probably too salty. But I did like the idea of sharing the broth with friends and tablemates, and of having a steaming hot soup in front of you. The seafood pancake was okay; the small shrimps were not super flavorful, and the flour was kinda doughy. I've had better in the past. Finally, the papaya salad was perhaps too soft all around - would have been better to have a more balanced mix of sweet, spicy. Would like to try again, especially the ramen dishes.
google avatar

Richard P.

Yelp
With the plethora of Korean food on Harvard Ave, Hanmaru seems to be an unpopular pick as none of my friends living in Brighton have heard of it. However, when we were searching for new spots to go to, we found this place which looked pretty decent. The only downside we saw from other reviews were long wait-times. Long story short, our food came to our table in under 21 minutes and we ordered about 5 dishes, which is pretty decent given there were a few other customers there. The highlights of the meal were the Yangnyeom Chicken (really good flavor, good amount of meat, and crispy skin) and the Jokbal (juicy, fatty meat and very unexpected for pig's feet). The other dishes were decently yummy (Stir-fry Spicy Squid, Seafood Pancake), except for the Budae Jungol which was also the most expensive dish that we got. The Budae Jungol looked and sounded very appetizing, but it was really just cheap ham, sausage, ramen noodles, and kimchi. We couldn't taste the cheese that was in it and overall, it was not worth the cost. tldr: great service and you gotta get the Jokbal and Yangnyeom Chicken.
google avatar

Coco C.

Yelp
Small and homely place for authentic Korean food. The spice level for our kimichi pot was just right, and there is a generous amount of food on our pot. The seafood pancake was also good because it was not oily. However you are not allow to sit down until your entire party has arrived. So make sure they your friends arrive on time!

Yelp
I know. You are a skeptic like me. You open up the menu and you see a Korean and Thai menu and you have to ask yourself, will the Korean or the Thai food hold up. Don't let it fool you. Order up. Listen to replay of the entire Korean drama Goblins' soundtrack and intermittently played Big Bang album and await your delicious food. Do you like fatty pork? No, skip this paragraph. Jokbal is fatty goodness! Most definitely the Best of Boston. Juicy and flavorful, and not dry like other Korean restaurants at all. Order this please. I also recommend the spicy pork bones and potatoes stew. This is very spicy but so delicious. I don't recommend the sweet and sour fried chicken bits because it was thickly battered, oily, and meh. From the Thai menu, the Thai papaya salad is the real deal. Super spicy for Asian palate and pungent shrimp paste goodness. Don't mess with it if you are not familiar with shrimp paste. This isn't your average fish sauce and I mean spicy on a whole other level. There are two whole prawns, like two lovers, and that's all. Don't go searching for more. Lol. See my pictures.

Yelp
When you're craving for Korean and live in an area that's become a breeding ground for the newest and hippest Asian Restaurants, I had to go on a little adventure. Hanmaru was next on my list. Review #038 Restaurant Type: Casual Dining. Good for: Meeting Friends and Dinner. My short summary sentence: 1 word, 3 syllables: Gamjatang! Food (65%) Taste to price 4.5/5 Quality to price 4/5 Portion to price 4/5 Average = 4.17 Service (20%) Friendliness 4/5 Promptness 4/5 Average = 4 Cleanliness (15%) Bathroom n/a Dining area 4/5 Kitchen area 4/5 Average = 4 Overall Score = [F(.65)]+[S(.20)]+C(.15)] = [2.71]+[0.8]+[0.6] = 4.11 What else to know: When I looked through the window, I was glad to see a lot of people inside. Having never been there before, I had no idea what the restaurant's flagship dish was. When the waitress walked me to my table, it was pretty obvious at that point what it was, Gamjatang. "Ah ha!" I said to myself. Pretty much, everyone was eating Gamjatang which made an indecisive person like myself, an easy order. Overall, the food was as delicious as the pictures look. Vegetables were so fresh & clean. The pork was oh so tender and flavorful. In addition, I really enjoyed their Banchan. I would go back there within a heartbeat, even on these hot humid summer days. **If you enjoyed my review and need help with the Boston area, follow or add me as a friend. I have tons of reviews like this.

Yelp
Pork bone soup is tasty! Recommend you to get extra sliced pork! Service: no complaints. But they didn't refill my side dishes after I finished it even I asked them. Overall, they are okay! Tip: come with your friends so you can try different dishes!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is the best! Don't know why the reviews are bad? I got the gamjatang, which they're known for, and an entree bulgogi for extra meat . The gamjatang is a hot pot so it keeps boiling as you eat. I would put a couple disclaimers though - 1) because it's hot pot, the gamjatang is much better dine in than takeout, although the leftovers were delicious as well, and 2) the gamjatang come with a looot of meat on bones, so be prepared to eat bones, which I think is part of the fun. The broth is also incredibly delicious from the bones and is not msg-y or oily at all, you can tell that the flavors are natural and the dish is very nourishing. I also got the thai iced tea which was very yummy. Give this place a try and try their gamjatang!

Yelp
came by here with some friends because we were craving korean food! the food will probably satisfy your cravings, but i personally just wasn't impressed. i can't see myself coming back anytime soon, but i didn't necessarily regret trying this place out. - notes - both cash and card are accepted! - atmosphere - the inside of the restaurant is a little bit small, but there are a fair amount of tables. it's a relatively casual spot where friends would go for a dinner, but nothing too upscale. - overall experience - my friends and i arrived at around 7:15 pm on a thursday evening and it was surprisingly quite busy. we were lucky enough to get the last open table, so we didn't have to wait long. the service here is pretty quick and we were able to get our food around 10 minutes after being served some side dishes. the service here is pretty good, but we did have trouble getting their attention every once in a while. 6/2/22 -soft tofu chigae with seafood: i was craving this dish, but it just wasn't that good compared to some of the other places in allston. i personally thought that kaju tofu house does their tofu stew a lot better. but, i appreciated how pork, beef, seafood, and veggie choices for the stew were all equally priced; your stew also comes with an egg unless you request not to include it. i decided to get my spice level as mild and the seafood as my protein. i was surprised to see that there was actually quite a bit of seafood in the stew, with mostly shrimp and clam. the side also comes with a bowl of rice, but the portion of rice didn't compare to the amount that other places would usually give you. the stew itself was quite bland and seemed watered down, but maybe it's because their mild spice level is just more mild than what i was used to. they added a fair amount of tofu in this too, but i still don't know if this was worth the ~$15. (3/5)

Yelp
We stopped by to get gamjatang hot pot here and it did not disappoint! Service was fast and the food was really good. We also liked the banchan/side dishes too. We definitely will come back in the winter!

Yelp
Gamjatang set B is perfect for 2. Comes with 2 bowls of rice + a pot with 4 pieces of pork bone in a spicy house made broth. It's a classic favorite whenever my girlfriend and I visit here, be it winter or summer. The pork is cooked before hand prior to being placed in the hot pot so it slips right off the bulk of bone by the time you're eating. Huuge pieces of tofu. You're bound to be exploding full by the end of this whole experience. No seating is allowed until your entire party is here.

Yelp
The Gamjatang is a MUST try if you like spicy stews. Went with my boyfriend (who generally eats a lot) around 4pm on Saturday. The place was almost filled with only 2 empty tables. We ordered the Gamjtang for two ($29) with an extra egg. We asked for a little less spicy than usual. The broth was sooooo flavorful and the pork bones had lots of very tender meat on them. I also really liked the potato and the soft tofu in soup. The portion is very generous that we couldn't even finish it. We asked to box the remaining soup and meat and think that it would be a perfect spicy ramen broth to use at home! The complimentary side dishes are really good too. I especially liked the mashed potato salad. It was so creamy and melts in your mouth. We finished it so quickly and asked for one more! Parking is free and easy across the street (make sure you park at the public parking lot, not the lot for the liquor store -- you could be towed). We will be back soon!!

Yelp
Take-out review: I got the steamed pig's feet (jokbal) for take-out. Price of $20 was too expensive for the portion. Usually, korean restaurants give side-dishes and rice for a $20 dish but there were no sides. The waitress told me that rice was extra so I didn't opt-in since I had rice at home. They do give you a korean mixed bean paste sauce (ssamjang). The taste was just average but the meat was very soft and chewy.

Yelp
Try Gamja-tang with udon. Straight fire!! I would get the set A for 2 people since it's so much! I love their side dishes. Service was nice and friendly and don't be afraid to ask for extra napkins while eating Yangnyeom Chicken! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Gamja Tang/Pork bone soup here is awesome! They have 3 sizes to choose (A, B, C) C is the smallest one and doesn't come with a gas stove burner like the others, but instead comes in like a big tofu soup pot. It's enough for 3 if you want to order something else like the seafood pancake (which is also pretty good). I've only come here for the gamja tang -It can get pretty spicy for those of you who aren't into that, so just beware, especially with the soup. It's basically a big pot of spicy soup, pork bones (and meat..duh), potatoes, veggies, and tofu. When they bring it to your table, you let it cook a little bit and mix everything together..then serve! I love that it's piping hot, and STAYS piping hot because of the burner -They have extra add ons too like tofu, potato, ramen, etc. We usually add ramen to it, and end up being over stuffed every single time -Good selection of appetizers/banchan -Sometimes service can be a little slow if they don't have enough people working. Last time I went, there was only 1 server for the whole place, but maybe it's because it was the day after Thanksgiving and people weren't scheduled?? idk

Yelp
Read this more as a 3.5 star review. They seemed to have scaled down their menu based on my previous trips here (no more tteokbokki sadly). Hanmaru ramen with beef bone broth is always a decent option here and their kimchi tofu entree is also fairly satisfying as well. Their unique dish is definitely gamjatang/jungol that is served hotpot style between 2 - 4 people. The broth is ok but doesn't seem to really absorb the flavor of the bone marrow too well; at the very least, it is spicy. Decent Korean/fusion restaurant if you are in the area but not mind blowing.

Yelp
Hanmaru is open, and, according to the menu, they are offering 10% off at lunch as a reopening special. Two of us ordered the papaya salad, vegetarian chap che (with fried tofu!), and a seafood tofu chi gae (sorry if any/all of these are misnamed or typed) which was much too much food for us, even though one of us (ahem) stuffed themselves silly. Fortunately for me, they were able to make everything mild. I liked everything, but silly me, my favorite part of the meal was two of the five side dishes - the potato salad and the fish cake. They refill these, you know. The waitress was pleasant. She even twisted the paper on my straw into a rose!

Yelp
Seafood pancake was ok. It was a bit doughy and not crispy enough for my tastes. Give it a good coat with the sauce to improve flavor. The good part was actually the Hanmaru Ramen with tonkasu. The pork belly was delicious and flavorful. It was juicy and was cooked well. The soup itself was not truly Japanese as I can taste a very strong Korean soup base in it, which is fine since the soup was excellent. It had a spiciness to it which wasn't too overwhelming. The noodle was the kind I like in ramen which was curly with medium thickness and cooked to the right semi al dente style. Also had the Omelette fried rice which was good. The egg enveloping the rice was nice and hot. The ketchup gave the right balance and obviously and very well like Japanese style dish. The fried rice inside was well flavored although I think they could make it a bit drier as fried rice goes. The service was fast and waitress attentive and courteous. Overall, great experience and will definitely go back to try the gamja tang everyone raves about there.

Yelp
The food was pretty good but those little doorbell things don't work or we just had a staff member who ignored us. It was a tight space and dim inside but there was a line out the door. I got the squid dish and it was pretty good, but I think I would order something else.

Yelp
Super yummy glass noodles and the waitress was really nice. She was super patient when me and my boyfriend asked a bunch of questions about the menu. Food was DELICIOUS and spicy :)

Yelp
Slowly, but surely, I am collecting a list of restaurants for all the good Korean dishes. Seoul Soulongtang for soulongtang/naengmyun, Sura for KBBQ, Bonchon for KFC (Korean fried chicken) and now Hanmaru for gamjatang (Pork and potato stew). When I first stepped into the restaurant few minutes before their lunch hour, first thing I noticed was that it was not as showy or large as some of the other Korean restaurants in the area. But this was perfect for me and my friend who were trying to get the authentic Korean experience that we haven't had in a while. Unfortunately, the service was slow, it was lunch time and there was only one server though. But the Gamjatang (pork and potato stew) was delicious. Nice and spicy, yet perfectly seasoned to go with rice on the side. The pork and the potatoes were tender and steaming hot when they came out. We also got a side of seasoned pork hock/leg (jokbal) which was delicious. I haven't seen this item on too many menus in the area, so if you're craving jokbal, you should try this place.

Yelp
**Review for Takeout Only** I've been to Hanmaru for multiple times since the old days of college, and surely their GamjaTang (Korean Beef & Potato Stew) has been and always will be their signature this. Our recent visit however was to order something really quick and easy for a Sunday dinner, and we opted for more JapChae and Chicken Katsu. Both were delicious and flavor profile-wise on the bolder side. The Japchae was a tad oily to my liking, though, but tasted fantastic with piping hot rice! Chicken katsu was OK, but nothing too much to rave about. Portions were generous and our order was ready in 10 minutes, so that's a great bonus!

Yelp
I only order their specialty pork soup every time and they always do a good job on their specialty. If you are a fan of pork bone marrow you'll love this place. Big portion too

Yelp
My favorite Korean place in Allston! Food is consistently great and banchan (kimchi/appetizers) are included with the meals. This feels like mom and pop restaurant and the owner is so friendly. I love the bulgogi and kimchi pancake!
