8 of the Most Unusual Hotels in the Netherlands

"Choosing a good hotel is hard, and sometimes at the end of the day, you settle on a subpar place just so you can crash. However, out of all the hotels in Amsterdam you could stay in, there’s one hotel that you want to absolutely avoid.  The Hans Brinker has touted itself as the “Worst Hotel in the World,” a title that is decidedly accurate. Through an entirely ironic advertising campaign marketing themselves as the worst hotel in the world, they take a good-natured poke at their service, but they don’t just stop at the clever advertisements. According to former guests, the hotel truly lives up to its advertising schtick. While most hotel goers feel that the 25 euro/night price is worth a little discomfort, it seems that the Hans Brinker hotel makes an effort to create the most uncomfortable hotel experience possible. Dirty sheets (guaranteed to improve your immune system), crappy lockers, flooded bathrooms, and the unavoidable wafts of marijuana smoke around the place is enough to drive anyone away – on the other hand, you do get what you pay for. Strangely enough, there seems to be some genius behind it all. The hotel, despite all of its flaws, still manages to book rooms. Part of it may be the cheap rate, but for those who know what they’re getting into, (and how could you not?) a night at the Hans Brinker serves as a true test of endurance for travelers." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Overall, Hans Brinker Hostel is a great place to stay and more budget friendly than other places. The staff was really friendly and helpful, and the location is also good. It’s tucked away on a quiet street but still close to everything. We were in room 20, and unfortunately it was extremely hot, which made it really hard to sleep but it was mid July so unlikely it would be a problem in other months. Any time the person above or below moved, the entire bed would shake. Combined with the heat, this made it really hard to get good rest. We had booked a mixed dorm, but it ended up being just the two of us girls in what felt more like a boys’ dorm. The room and shared spaces were very clean, which we appreciated. However, there wasn’t anywhere convenient to keep your personal belongings while sleeping except for a storage box under the bed. I also found that anything I left on my bed would slide off and fall behind the bed frame, landing all the way behind the bed of the person below me, which was uncomfortable to reach and retrieve. Also the chargers next to the bed would easily fall out whenever anyone would move the bed and with no place to put your phone this happened a lot. This hostel is a solid option for the price, location, and cleanliness, but I wouldn’t recommend room 20 during the warmer months if sleep and comfort are important to you. I think with a few changes this place could really be top tier!

Our stay was generally fine. I feel like there are some things that are easy to improve but they just accepted that that how’s they work. For example, the working hours of the kitchen. The disco was never open during our stay (and we had a friday night at the hostel), so don’t trust the pictures you see because probably it won’t be open. Apart from that, the hostel is nice, pretty clean and there are lots of people for you to meet. Service and the reception could be improved also. Nice stay.

This was a really good hostel, the rooms were tidy and pretty good for the price point. The restaurant/bar had a nice atmosphere and nice staff and a really good happy hour deal menu. Minor complaints include very loud irish lads (not the hostels fault) and also not letting us not check out and back in (which included changing rooms) when we chose to add another day

Excellent experience at this hostel, lovely staff and very clean rooms. We stayed in an en suite 4-man mixed dorm and had all the necessary provisions with clean towels each day. Price was fair and location couldn’t have been better. Would definitely recommend and will be staying here again when I come back to Amsterdam.

Location was perfect, the staff were great, but they need a second receptionist. We waiting in a huge line to check-in at 3 pm and to check-out at 10 am. They give you wrist bands that you have to wear to get in the building, but no one ever checked if we had wrist bands. I also think it’s a bad security move because, as a female traveler, I don’t like sharing where i’m staying with strangers. It was definitely a party hostel. The bar and outdoor seating was nice though. No kitchen, no laundry, showers had a push faucet for thirty seconds making showering super difficult. I don’t think I’d stay here again, but I might stay in the neighborhood.

I stayed at Hans Brinker in a private room and had a fantastic experience. The room was clean, comfortable, and perfect for what we needed. The location is fantastic! One of the highlights was definitely the bar downstairs a it had such a great atmosphere and was the perfect place to meet and chat with other travellers. Whether you’re looking to relax with a drink or make new friends, the social vibe at the bar really made the stay extra enjoyable. Would definitely recommend Hans Brinker to anyone looking for a fun and welcoming place to stay!

I spent a few nights at this hostel in Amsterdam that, although located about 30 minutes from the city center, turned out to be a wonderful surprise. The area is quiet and peaceful — perfect for unwinding after a busy day exploring — and public transport makes it easy to get around. The hostel itself is clean, modern, and comfortable. The rooms are spacious, the beds are cozy, and everything feels well-maintained. But what truly made the experience special were the people — both the staff and the other travelers. I met some truly amazing individuals from all over the world, and the atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and social. One of the highlights was definitely the bar downstairs. It had a great vibe, served excellent local beer, and was the perfect spot to hang out, meet new people, or just relax with a drink in hand after a long day. All in all, even though it’s a bit outside the city center, I’d absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a clean, friendly, and character-filled stay in Amsterdam.

The local access of this hotel is excellent, and you can easily find trains nearby for getting around. There are many cafes and restaurants in the area, and even the hostel's own cafe has good drinks. The cleanliness was excellent, which initially made me happy with my choice. The staff's good attitude perfectly completed the experience
