8 of the Most Unusual Hotels in the Netherlands

"Choosing a good hotel is hard, and sometimes at the end of the day, you settle on a subpar place just so you can crash. However, out of all the hotels in Amsterdam you could stay in, there’s one hotel that you want to absolutely avoid.  The Hans Brinker has touted itself as the “Worst Hotel in the World,” a title that is decidedly accurate. Through an entirely ironic advertising campaign marketing themselves as the worst hotel in the world, they take a good-natured poke at their service, but they don’t just stop at the clever advertisements. According to former guests, the hotel truly lives up to its advertising schtick. While most hotel goers feel that the 25 euro/night price is worth a little discomfort, it seems that the Hans Brinker hotel makes an effort to create the most uncomfortable hotel experience possible. Dirty sheets (guaranteed to improve your immune system), crappy lockers, flooded bathrooms, and the unavoidable wafts of marijuana smoke around the place is enough to drive anyone away – on the other hand, you do get what you pay for. Strangely enough, there seems to be some genius behind it all. The hotel, despite all of its flaws, still manages to book rooms. Part of it may be the cheap rate, but for those who know what they’re getting into, (and how could you not?) a night at the Hans Brinker serves as a true test of endurance for travelers." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Best 9 Hostels in Amsterdam (Updated 2025)

"I've been returning to this old-school institution for years — Hans Brinker has been around nearly 50 years and hasn't changed much. It's conveniently located near Amsterdam's nightlife and about five minutes from the Museumplein, with a hip underground bar and a cheap restaurant on-site; the rooms are basic but you get free breakfast, and it's a popular, old-school spot for budget travelers." - Matthew Kepnes

At least it was cheap. Location is okay but not the best and the safest looking to be honest. The lounge is closed early and there is no place where you can sit outside of the room. So if you want to make a call and not disturb people in your room, you go out into the hallway which is the only place where you can talk but then they tell you that you can not talk there. Each room has a bathroom I guess and I was in a small room that had 6 people and the bathroom was very small with a shower that is fixed to the wall and you press a button so that it works for 30 seconds and then it stops so you have to press again.

It was a good experience to stay at this place. There is a bathroom and toilets in the shared rooms which is a good thing for a traveler to have. Also my roommates were great people. Everything was great. Receptionists are great the only thing I can say is that there was a lady at the reception when I arrived there and she wasn’t giving that much attention what I asked (girl with black and curly hair) but overall it was good. The other receptionists made everything good for us.

This is a hostel, so you should arrive with hostel expectations. We booked a private room, but it was extremely small—really too small for two people. If you’re staying alone, you might want to reserve a single room per person to have at least minimal comfort. Another issue is the noise. Every morning at 10:00, the staff begins cleaning the rooms, and the process is loud enough to make sleeping past that time almost impossible. If you’re hoping for a late morning, definitely bring earplugs. On the positive side, the bar downstairs is great. They host weekend parties, and there are plenty of young people, which gives it a lively hostel atmosphere. I’d recommend this place if you’re staying just a couple of nights in Amsterdam and can sleep in any conditions or don’t mind noise. Otherwise, you may want to consider other options. The location is excellent—right in the city center—so you can easily reach anything you need.

Very very friendly staff and a very good location. A group of us booked a private room and the beds were clean and comfortable. Having an ensuite in the room with a shower was excellent, and a small towel was provided, which you don't normally get in a hostel. The luggage room was fantastic and we could leave our bags before and after check in/out. The hostel had vending machines in reception and also a bar next door with a food menu. Price was brilliant as Amsterdam can be a very expensive city. Would definitely be booking here again if I was back in Amsterdam

This hostel is good. Location is amazing in center everything is very closed. The staff also very good friendly and ready to help with any questions . Cleaning is done every day. Thing that I do not like is breakfast : everyday is the same , no omelet no bacon , no porridge — only beans and dry sausages. In the 6-person room, there is no table, so I had to put all my belongings and food on the floor. The water in the sink and in the shower stops every 15–20 seconds, which is inconvenient — I want to shower normally, not press a button every 20 seconds.

I visited Amsterdam to attend an International Conference. I reached the hostel comfortably after changing two buses from the airport. Hans Brinker is within walking distance of my last bus stop. The entrance has a huge neon sign visible from the street corner.|Staff are highly cooperative and ready to attend. Hans Brinker serves an unlimited breakfast in the morning, including eggs, sliced meat/chicken, fruit, jam, butter, bread, tea, and coffee. (Photography is strictly prohibited in the eatery area.)|Rooms and corridors are very clean and organized. I booked a shared room with six beds. The rooms were small but had a shared cupboard facility, which you could lock for your luggage. Room service cleans and changes your mattress daily.|The entrance has an automatic glass door, and no one can enter without the reception person regulating it. The reception also offers a chargeable locker facility (however, I didn't use it). My schedule was extended for one day more, and they were able to extend my stay within a minute of my request.|My other roommates were all very nice and friendly, including college students who come for weekend outings. Staff are highly disciplined and instruct visitors to remain disciplined. I was there for a couple of days and I did not notice any nuisance or notorious behavior. (However, I was alone without my family.)|I highly recommend Hans Brinker to anyone searching for accommodation in Amsterdam.

The location is more than perfect, but the room itself wasn’t very comfortable. The beds are placed too close and facing each other, and there was a bad sewage smell in the bathroom and even in the elevator. I really liked the room service — they make your bed and provide clean towels every day, very neatly and professionally. The food at the bar/restaurant inside the hostel was good — I tried the tomato soup with slices of bread and flavored butter, and it was excellent

Great location, just what you need to explore Amsterdam. Staff very friendly on check in, we had a room booked for a group of six, which included its own bathroom. Digital lock on the door, 3 sets of bunk beds, with a pillow, duvet and shower towel each. No toiletries in the bathroom, even basic ones but thats not a big deal. There was a small shop next door where we could get some. There was a nightclub downstairs on Saturday night which was fun to go down too for a while when we were back. The vibe in the place was very positive and friendly, bar staff in Ms Chelins were nice and helpful. Really great location to base yourself for exploring around Amsterdam. I would highly recommend.
