8 of the Most Unusual Hotels in the Netherlands

"Choosing a good hotel is hard, and sometimes at the end of the day, you settle on a subpar place just so you can crash. However, out of all the hotels in Amsterdam you could stay in, there’s one hotel that you want to absolutely avoid.  The Hans Brinker has touted itself as the “Worst Hotel in the World,” a title that is decidedly accurate. Through an entirely ironic advertising campaign marketing themselves as the worst hotel in the world, they take a good-natured poke at their service, but they don’t just stop at the clever advertisements. According to former guests, the hotel truly lives up to its advertising schtick. While most hotel goers feel that the 25 euro/night price is worth a little discomfort, it seems that the Hans Brinker hotel makes an effort to create the most uncomfortable hotel experience possible. Dirty sheets (guaranteed to improve your immune system), crappy lockers, flooded bathrooms, and the unavoidable wafts of marijuana smoke around the place is enough to drive anyone away – on the other hand, you do get what you pay for. Strangely enough, there seems to be some genius behind it all. The hotel, despite all of its flaws, still manages to book rooms. Part of it may be the cheap rate, but for those who know what they’re getting into, (and how could you not?) a night at the Hans Brinker serves as a true test of endurance for travelers." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The Best 9 Hostels in Amsterdam (Updated 2025)

"I've been returning to this old-school institution for years — Hans Brinker has been around nearly 50 years and hasn't changed much. It's conveniently located near Amsterdam's nightlife and about five minutes from the Museumplein, with a hip underground bar and a cheap restaurant on-site; the rooms are basic but you get free breakfast, and it's a popular, old-school spot for budget travelers." - Matthew Kepnes

Overall, Hans Brinker Hostel is a great place to stay and more budget friendly than other places. The staff was really friendly and helpful, and the location is also good. It’s tucked away on a quiet street but still close to everything. We were in room 20, and unfortunately it was extremely hot, which made it really hard to sleep but it was mid July so unlikely it would be a problem in other months. Any time the person above or below moved, the entire bed would shake. Combined with the heat, this made it really hard to get good rest. We had booked a mixed dorm, but it ended up being just the two of us girls in what felt more like a boys’ dorm. The room and shared spaces were very clean, which we appreciated. However, there wasn’t anywhere convenient to keep your personal belongings while sleeping except for a storage box under the bed. I also found that anything I left on my bed would slide off and fall behind the bed frame, landing all the way behind the bed of the person below me, which was uncomfortable to reach and retrieve. Also the chargers next to the bed would easily fall out whenever anyone would move the bed and with no place to put your phone this happened a lot. This hostel is a solid option for the price, location, and cleanliness, but I wouldn’t recommend room 20 during the warmer months if sleep and comfort are important to you. I think with a few changes this place could really be top tier!

Staff are super friendly and the hostel has great happy hour affordable prices for travellers! The downside about the room is that there is not much air flow because the windows barely open and on hot days it was smeltering. The bathroom floors are also always wet because the shower is next to the toilet with no water blockage floor system! It’s clean, friendly and not too far from the main city centre.

This is exactly what you should expect from a hostel- small quarters, metal bunk beds, and no A/C. We had an issue with our door lock and the front desk was very responsive and helpful. The location is fantastic and the rooms were very clean. Overall a great budget option in Amsterdam.

I spent a few nights at this hostel in Amsterdam that, although located about 30 minutes from the city center, turned out to be a wonderful surprise. The area is quiet and peaceful — perfect for unwinding after a busy day exploring — and public transport makes it easy to get around. The hostel itself is clean, modern, and comfortable. The rooms are spacious, the beds are cozy, and everything feels well-maintained. But what truly made the experience special were the people — both the staff and the other travelers. I met some truly amazing individuals from all over the world, and the atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and social. One of the highlights was definitely the bar downstairs. It had a great vibe, served excellent local beer, and was the perfect spot to hang out, meet new people, or just relax with a drink in hand after a long day. All in all, even though it’s a bit outside the city center, I’d absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a clean, friendly, and character-filled stay in Amsterdam.

Quite a nice hostel in term of price/quality. It's well situated within the city and I found that it was quite clean, with cleaning staff coming in our room every morning. Staff was very nice, welcoming and accommodating. Really line that you could leave your bag for free, It's helpfull when you checked out but only leave kn the evening. On the down side, the ladder of the bed are quite annoying and makes the bed shake a lot! It's also missing a microwave area.... Would probably sleep there again if I go back to Amsterdam!

Our stay was generally fine. I feel like there are some things that are easy to improve but they just accepted that that how’s they work. For example, the working hours of the kitchen. The disco was never open during our stay (and we had a friday night at the hostel), so don’t trust the pictures you see because probably it won’t be open. Apart from that, the hostel is nice, pretty clean and there are lots of people for you to meet. Service and the reception could be improved also. Nice stay.

It’s city location, staff and excellent connectivity made city travel easier for us. Also the rooms were good except the quality of bed, they were bit noisy. Besides this I would say that if you are looking for affordable accommodation with good accessibility then Hans Brinker is worth it.

I recommend this hostel to young people and everyone who wants to enjoy Amsterdam on foot. The position is good and the staff is great. Clean and nice service. The rooms are quite small but you'll get used to it!
