Hansom

"A stone-faced 16th-century house in the pretty market town of Bedale provides a fine home for this friendly restaurant. A drinks terrace sits on the cobbled street out front, while small plates are served in the interior wine bar. The main dining room, where the tasting menu is the focus, stylishly contrasts rustic beams and an old fireplace with modern décor. Eponymous Chef-Owner Ruth Hansom is a local and it shows in her cooking, which skilfully spotlights wonderful produce from the surrounding area – be it Swaledale lamb or the famous Yorkshire rhubarb." - Michelin Inspector

Having been for Ruth's taster menu previously (what an experience that what!) we decided to try Sunday lunch - and it wasn't a disappointment. The starters were amazing, flavourful and diverse. The mains were spot on, at first we were worried we didn't have enough gravy but need not have - it was far from dry, everything was melt in the mouth, absolutely wonderful and highly recommended. Staff were brilliant, wine was on point, can't wait for our next visit to this wonderful place 🍷♥️

An absolute gem of a restaurant. Superb quality food and service. We visited for my wife’s birthday and was made to feel very welcome from the start. Collected and dropped off by Mark in his Lotus made this a very special occasion. We are very lucky to have an award winning chef and quality restaurant in Bedale & North Yorkshire. A very warm thank you to Ruth, Mark and the team. 10/10.

A returning customer! This time I treated my Mum to the Friday Lunch and it absolutely did not disappoint! I had the hake and Mum had the belly pork, cooked and crackled to perfection. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable of the food and drinks, they suggested a fabulous gin and tonic pairing, so much so my Mum actually then went out and bought a bottle of the gin and recommended tonic. Portion sizes were very generous as always. Will definitely be back again.

We immediately booked to visit after reading the review by The Times food critic. What a treat this tasting menu was. The courses presented were all very good, our agreed favourite was the asparagus dish, so fresh and flavourful. We shared the cheese course which was the right amount of some great Yorkshire cheeses, I could have eaten a board of the Ribblesdale Cheese Company goats cheese. As the first table sitting on the evening we were the first patrons to try the new strawberry dessert, what a pressure, but we enjoyed immensely and gave our seal of approval. That sorbet was delicious. The wine pairings were well matched, highlights were the Greek white paired with the asparagus dish, and the ice cider complimented the strawberry dessert perfectly. Staff were attentive at the right amount, and requests for extra water, additional drinks etc. were actioned in quick time. The decor of the building was lovely, and balanced comfortability and the fine dining experience. Good value for money in comparison to other tasting menus we’ve had recently. This will become our new recommendation for family and friends wanting a good meal.

What a treat! We had been a little reluctant to visit at first, as I have dietary requirements which often leave me (understandably!) with less-than meal options when dining out, but we were gifted a voucher for part of a meal and took the leap… my goodness we are glad we did! The tasting menu was a delight and everything had been well thought-out and my options considered - I had gluten free bread, homemade crackers for the cheese course and the most incredible bread & butter pudding amuse bouche. All other courses had been tweaked so I could enjoy them alongside my husband- I feel incredibly grateful and thoroughly spoiled! We’ve eaten in Michelin-starred restaurants before and rate our meal here just as highly. The service was impeccable too - professional but wonderfully friendly. You get what you pay for and we’ll be back again the next time we have a child sitter!

We had excellent, slick service, and were made to feel very welcome. All the dishes, were delightful, the stand outs being the sea bream and the aged beef sirloin, the evening, celebrating birthdays, was made even more special by a visit to our table by Ruth and the drive home in the Lotus with Mark! Would highly recommend for a special night out.

Absolutely loved my first visit - a special treat from my son for my birthday. We devoured the tasting dinner “blind” without taking a peek at the menu! Each course was delicious , perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. This will be the first of many visits I’m sure. The use of carefully sourced local produce reflected the quality and diversity of “Yorkshire’s Larder.” The relaxed atmosphere and fabulously knowledgeable Amy waiting on our table completed Ruth’s skill, passion and creativity in the kitchen made for a truly wonderful evening. Thank you so much .

On a beautiful summer's evening a couple of nights ago and a pre-booking made several weeks ago to treat ourselves to an anniversary meal at Hansom Restaurant and Wine Bar was an absolute delight 😊 They do lovely cocktails too, as discovered the week before with friends. It is great to finally have a high-end restaurant in Bedale serving wonderful food, drinks in lovely surroundings. No, it is not cheap (as rather negatively reviewed by a recent local publication) but you get what you pay for and we will certainly be returning, to try both the Sunday Lunch and the tasting menu. There is a discretionary service charge of 12% which we had no issues with as the service was spot on. We chose the Small Plates menu and sat out alfresco watching the world go by in their lovely little outdoor dining area. Beautiful food, fantastic service, beautifully presented and the courgette fritters with Ribblesdale goats curd drizzled with honey were to die for! We also had a generous portion of huge olives, the best we have had. Other options we had; Masons Gin cured Whitby Sea Trout with pickled cucumber, braised Swaledale lamb shoulder with sourdough and tomato and a wonderful platter of Masham Pigs Charcuterie, again, a very decent size portion. We didn’t go for deserts as we couldn’t manage any more! Everything was delicious, lovely ambience, top quality and top marks all round. If you are looking for a quality experience with excellent, unusual and varied cuisine, lovely selection of wines in a lovely atmosphere, then you will not be disappointed. Thank you, Ruth and all the team at Hansoms :) :)
