Where to Eat and Drink in Portland’s Pearl District

"Located within Lovejoy’s Below by Botanist, Hapa Barkada is a collaboration between chef Melvin Trinidad and Hapa Howie’s owner Kiaha Kurek, offering a menu of Filipino and Hawaiian plates and bar snacks. Trinidad marinates chicken in adobo before giving it a deep fry, while Kurek stuffs inari with tuna poke. The best sampling of both chefs’ work is via the rice plates, which come with a choice of protein (shoyu chicken, tofu sisig), a choice of rice (herby chimichurri rice, garlic rice), a light cabbage slaw, and a scoop of mac salad." - Maya MacEvoy, Thom Hilton

Where to Find Fantastic Filipino Food in Portland and Beyond

"Located within the kitchen of Lovejoy’s Below by Botanist, Hapa Barkada is a collaboration between chef Melvin Trinidad and Hapa Howie’s owner Kiaha Kurek, combining Filipino and Hawaiian dishes on a single plate. For instance, Trinidad’s twice-cooked pork belly adobo — adobo-braised pork belly that’s deep-fried and finished with togarashi — can arrive with garlic rice and Hawaiian mac salad. Trinidad’s take on bistek transforms the beef and soy sauce dish into a braised brisket sandwich on a pandesal bun — it’s a fun choice to pair with an order of pork lumpia." - Krista Garcia, Eater Staff

The Top Spots for Late-Night Dining in Portland

"This collaboration from Filipino chef Melvin Trinidad and Hawaiian food cart owner Kiaha Kurek took over the kitchen at subterranean Pearl District cocktail bar Below by Botanist, which means visitors can eat pork lumpia, ahi tuna poke, and Spam musubi until 2 a.m. For a full meal, the best option is to go for one of the bar’s rice plates: Choose between garlic, steamed, or chimichurri rice, and then select a protein — twice-cooked pork belly adobo, mochiko chicken, kalua pig, tofu sisig. Each plate comes with Hawaiian mac salad and sesame slaw." - Thom Hilton, Eater Staff

"Hapa Barkada, which will move into the kitchen at the soon-to-open Pearl District bar, Below by Botanist. Chef Kiaha Kurek of Hapa Barkada has perfectly showcased the rich tapestry woven from the diverse cultures that has influenced the Hawaiian Islands over centuries. It seamlessly blends native Hawaiian ingredients with flavors introduced by immigrants from Portugal, Japan, China, the Philippines, and other regions. This fusion has resulted in a unique culinary tradition that reflected on the dishes. Poke Nachos would be my go to dish. Atmosphere is a upscale, sexy, botanical speak easy with different nightly events and music. Warm friendly staff that makes you feel like family. 10/10 would eat here every day. Pro tip: They offer late night Brunch on Sundays

Google
This place NEVER DISAPPOINTS!!! We got the catering size tuna poke nachos, volcano mochiko chicken, pork belly adobo, kalua pig rice plate, and adobo Mac-chicken sandwich. The food is so delicious and every bite is made with love. We’ve eaten in the restaurant before, but these photos are the take-out portions, which are still huge. It drives me crazy when I order something to-go and it’s half the size it would have been in restaurant- a problem I run into frequently but you won’t have at Hapa Barkada. And after waiting 40 minutes to eat it, it was still perfect- everything that was crispy stayed crisp. The entire menu is so insanely good it takes me forever just to decide what I want. You can tell the people who prepare this food cook with aloha and every time I finish a meal I’m looking forward to the next one! The ambience of the restaurant is relaxed, moody, and lowkey and it is in a perfect location easily accessible from the major highways if you’re in Portland metro area. Now we just need to make in it for brunch! PS- upgrade for the chimichurri rice!!

We decided to try this place out for a friends birthday. The space is small but cute and intimate. Food was so good!! You do have to go to the bar to order your drinks which is fine, we left our table to order drinks only to come back and our table was cleared and cleaned up by the time we got back which was about five minutes since there was a line and we wanted a round of shots. We brought it up to the bartenders/staff. Cooks dismissed us saying to talk to the bartenders/server. Our server was no where to be found and bartenders did nothing about it. We managed to snag an empty table to finish our drinks. I was so sad! I only had a few bites of my food. You’d think the server would check first. We clearly had plates full of food and we were at the bar. Poor experience all together, but food tasted great!

Google
I’ll do a double review since this place is the food service for Below by the Botanist. Went on a Friday night, and it surprisingly wasn’t too busy. Basics: It’s basically self serve. You sit anywhere, you scan the QR code for the menu, you order and pay on your phone, and I’m assuming it’s someone from the kitchen that brings your food to you. And if you need anything, you have to go to the bartender for it. There was no wait staff. One unisex/anyone bathroom, it’s a slide close door that does have gaps- while it’s too dark to see much, if someone really wanted to be a creep they could absolutely get close and peak in. The food: The Mac salad was incredibly disappointing. And that was what I was looking forward to the most. It was bland and there was really nothing but noodles and the sauce. The pork sliders were pretty good, and the chicken nachos as well. With it not being very busy it took between 30 and 40 minutes to get our food, way longer than we expected to have to wait and to be there. Love the low lit, kind of cozy scene with all the plants. There was a DJ which I didn’t really expect. But the music was overly loud and not the same vibe as the ambience. The cocktails were good, and about your typical upscale/specialty cocktail price. Drinks were: Keep the Same Energy And (I think) the Hibiscus Paloma

This was a delightful experience. I showed up when they opened. The staff were still setting up but were super attentive when I walked in. The drinks are beautifully crafted and delicious. All the food we tried was flavorful and perfectly priced so we could try multiple things. There was live music the night I was there. Highly recommend for a fun stop after work

Google
--- drinks --- Hapa barkada ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ --- food --- Kalua pig ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - so good Ahi tuna ⭐⭐⭐ - little fishy Hapa salad with rib eye steak ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ - for some reason hit the spot more than the pig but I could tell the pig was objectively better, but this was my fave

Google
This place is amazing! More people need to know about this place. Tyler the bartender made some amazing drinks and has a fantastic personality and charm. The food is seriously amazing. The lumpia was actually authentic and tasty. The kalua pork nachos were good. But the burger..... The burger is seriously in the top 5 of my all time favorite burgers. Even if you do not drink, you need to eat here.

Google
Love Hapa Barkada! I visited for my first time when I made my second trip to Portland and visited this part of the Pearl district to see an apartment I was interested in, walked by and saw the sign for “Hawaiian & Filipino Style Food” and was like, “Yes please!” They absolutely didn’t disappoint. I had to try the Poké nachos and the Lumpia, comfort foods to me 😍 Well, I ended up moving in those apartments and am so happy to be a block away and recently took a friend for his first time, and first time trying Poké altogether, so naturally we ordered some drinks and the Poké nachos and sat upstairs on the patio and listened to the DJ’s music and enjoyed the atmosphere and the friendly service, always appreciated 🤩 Definitely one of my fave neighborhood spots!

Yelp
Located inside Below by Botanist, this was my first stop for food after arriving in Portland. I had been watching their delicious offerings on their insta feed for months and could not wait. I dragged along a couple of friends and I think we ordered a good portion of the menu! Love that you just scan a QR code at your table and pay that way too and then magical food appears! We had the Mac-n-Cheese lumpia (top tier), tofu bites (yummy), tofu rice, chicken rice (my friend could not stop raving), and masubi (spam, fried chicken and tofu). Again my friends raved about their meaty versions. Wait! How could I forget the poke bites? Inari (tofu skin) filled with rice and topped with poke? Yes please. My only regret is that this spot is not actually in my city for me to eat at weekly. Location is down stairs and in a bar (so no kiddos). Parking is on the street.

Yelp
The genuine soul and technique at this restaurant is reflected by the passion, quality, and uniqueness of each dish at Hapa Barkada. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, who was very pleasant to speak with. Definetely give it a go if you're in the area- but just know that it can be a little tough to find as it's not located in the building that your phone apps will take you to. Take the staircase to Below. I almost missed it the first time around.

Yelp
5 stars for food, service, and ambiance! I can't be effusive enough in my enthusiasm for the food here. Hearty, warm, and a perfect pairing with the drinks offered by Botanist. I love how they're continuously iterating their menu - developing and testing new menu items/options. Everything I've tried here has been delicious. From their mochiko chicken to spring rolls to adobo mac-chicken sandwich. The meat is prepped to perfection and delectably seasoned. This is the perfect place to spend a weekend evening with friends. There's seating at the bar and plenty of space in their dining room in the back if you're looking for a quieter environment to chat and hang out. As other reviews have stated, ordering happens via QR code, so do be prepared for paperless ordering/cardless payment. That being said, I'd still say the service, in regards to the people delivering the food to the table has always been warm and hospitable. Definitely check out Hapa Barkada and get a drink from Botanist to complete the experience while you're at it!

Yelp
Their chicken Katsu sandwich was so on point. The vibe was relaxing and friendly. And our bartender was all smiles as she served up our drinks. definitely coming back for more.

Yelp
I have been here three times since they first opened and absolutely have loved every experience! They offer Filipino and Hawaiian dishes (some fusion some more "traditional"), but they are all delicious! Ordering is simple, although a phone is needed as it is through a QR code. Service is speedy and the food got to our table very quickly. There are two main seating areas - at the bar and in a larger seating area and because we went earlier, seating was fairly easy to find. Food wise, all of the food is super delicious. Our group particularly enjoyed the Pork Belly bites and the Poke Bombz. The Pork Belly is perfectly fried and juicy inside. Paired with the vinegar, it is the perfect combination of fat and acid. The Poke Bombz were also delicious. The tofu skin is slightly sweet, and stuffing the savory poke inside is an ingenious pairing! While there, make sure to order a drink at Below. There are some super beautiful creations and it's the perfect way to start or end the night!!

Yelp
Decided to venture to their soft opening. They were still working on some kinks when we came, but were quick to acknowledge them. Hapa Barkada is a fusion of Filipino, and Hawaiian flavors. The restaurant doesn't have physical menus. You'll have to use your phone to scan a QR code to see it. You also order from your phone, and pay prior. Drinks and liquor are from Below by Botanist. They give you a drink menu when you sit. You then order and pay for your drinks at the counter. Chef Melvin's take on favorites such as lumpia, twice cooked pork belly adobo, etc. is a wonderful rendition of Filipino cooking. You'll have to try (his mom's recipe) the lumpia. We didn't have any Hawaiian food at this visit. They were out of salmon for the poke nachos. The food is brought out to your table when it's cooked. They don't wait for all your food to be ready to bring it out. Which is a plus. Hapa Howie's used to be in the Tigard area before they relocated. Chef Kiaha's cooking is something I look forward to having more often with their coming together as Hapa Barkada. The restaurant is located in the Pearl district on SW Lovejoy. They are inside Below by Botanist. You'll have to go down some stairs to get in. I didn't notice if they had an elevator for wheelchair accessibility. There is also street parking available in the area. Looking forward to coming back to try other items on their menu.

Yelp
You have to order with your phone. It was a bit annoying as both my friend and I had low battery on our phones. Do they offer chargers if your phone battery dies? Small portions for an $18 plate of food. Great service. Owners husband gave my friend good recommendations. Wonton chips were yummy on volcano poke nachos. Tofu had a good texture and flavor on the fries. Cute environment. No street light comes in this basement like setting. I like that it is open late. Street Parking was plentiful on a Sunday night. I'm not rich enough to actually get full here. But if you are, it's a cool spot.

Yelp
Since I moved to Portland, every once in a while, I would check for Filipino food. I found this place a week or two after its soft opening, and I was so pumped that it's in my neighborhood. After having had pan de sal with butter every morning growing up, I cannot tell you how much of a revelation it is having it as a base for a savory slider with bistek. SO GOOD.

Yelp
The food here is amazing! We had the pork belly adobo fries, abodo fried chicken, fried chicken with chimichurri rice , lumpia (egg rolls), and a Hapa Barkada cocktail from Below. Everything was super tasty and service was fast & friendly! Definitely coming back to try more dishes!

Yelp
It was my first time so I tried the Pork Adobo Belly w/ Loaded Fries which was the special for Filipino Food Month. Then I tried the Volcano Mochiko Fried Chicken w/ Chimichurri Rice which was and then the Adobo Chicken Nuggets & of course the Lumpia! My favorite was the Volcano Mochiko Fried Chicken and the Chimichurri Rice but honestly everything was !!!

Yelp
This is a new and interesting concept but needs to be better communicated with first time guests. I came in on a Thursday evening with a friend and right away we were confused. No one greeted us or told us what to do. We went back and forth from the bar on the right side and small dining lounge on the left. There were no host/host stand so I went up to the bar to get the attention of a worker and they let me know that we seat ourselves over in the lounge area and scan the barcode to order food. If we wanted drinks we come to the bar. Unfortunately, it was packed and there were no tables available so we had to wait for people to leave. Luckily within a few minutes, a table left but it took awhile before someone bussed the table. Beware of which table you are scanning the barcode from bc that is how they know where to bring the food out to. You must pay and tip prior to getting your food. You must also get your own water by the bar. It's pretty much a self-service concept. Although service is little to none, food was amazing. I got the Mochiko Volcano Chicken with garlic rice. It had the perfect amount of flavor and texture. Overall it's a cute trendy place with delicious food, subpar service, and prices are fair.

Yelp
My husband and I went there when we visited Portland last month. We ordered Adobo Fried Chicken Plate with garlic rice and Musubi (teriyaki spam). They were really good! The bartender/manager was friendly and nice. The cocktails we had were great too. It's a fun place to grab a drink with friends. We will definitely go back when we visit Portland next time.

Yelp
Everything was an absolute delight. My sisters and I came for my birthday and it was the perfect way to celebrate. We're half Filipino and loved everything! The flavors and textures were exceptional. We came on a Thursday evening so it was a little slower. It was quiet and peaceful and a very enjoyable meal. We ordered our drinks from the bar and sat in the restaurant. We had a bit of trouble ordering food on our phones because it was at the tail end of happy hour so we ended up having to go to the kitchen to order. The food came out as it was done and was all on the table in under 15min. We ordered a lot, so they really turned it out fast. I can't wait to go back to try more of the menu!

Yelp
Cozy club atmosphere with excellent drinks, very fresh and well-thought out nosh, leaning in soundly with the reggae vibe. Lots of great choices here, so I'll call out the chimichurri rice and the ahi poke nachos as surprise standouts, but really the entire tapas experience was all around excellent. I'll look to go here each time I visit Portland.

Sarah S.

Yelp
It was a little difficult to find. It's located in the bar Below. Had a drink while I decided what to order. The drink was amazing!!! I got the Hapa Barkads. I ordered the lumpia, fried pork belly bites, and macaroni salad. It was all really fresh, fast, and delicious! Best pork belly I've ever had!!! On top of all that, the ambience was great and everyone was so friendly! I highly recommend this place!!!

Imma N.

Yelp
I was hoping for home comfort food based on the menu descriptions. The chicken entries - dry, over cooks and charred.
google avatar

Mariah C.

Yelp
Love the food from here!!!and the place that it's in! The Botianist is such a cute little vibe. Food is AMAZING

Mary H.

Yelp
Food was delicious. The security guys outside were super nice and set up the patio outside for me in a warm night. Inside it was very, very noisy and crowded. You have to order food yourself at a kiosk. The food is cheerfully delivered. I'll be back again when I'm in the neighborhood.

Special K.

Yelp
Great food, service and ambience! Had the mochiko chicken, twice cooked pork belly and poke nachos. Perfectly cooked, seasoned and authentic! Can't wait to try the rest of the menu. Oh and can't forget the Bloody Mary and garlic rice.
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
Disappointed with the food. I ordered the adobo fried chicken plate and received one small piece of chicken. There was no chimichurri and the rice was not garlic rice as I ordered. Plate was very imbalanced. Not worth the price.
google avatar

Rich D.

Yelp
Love their take on Filipino food and the location is close to my work place. It's a bar set up, you order from your phone... and the prep and service after i order is timely.
google avatar

Jager D.

Yelp
The food was great, the service was simple and quick. Ambiance was 100% the best part the music mixed with the under ground vibe is something that's mostly attracting me back!

Yelp
As a Filipino that just moved here a few months ago, I've been trying to search for quality Filipino cuisine in the area. This place didn't disappoint! I forgot to take pictures because it was so damn good I couldn't wait! I took my fiancee out for a date night to Below by Botanist, and the venue was really awesome with the interior decorations with a dope floral vibe. Highly recommend the pork belly adobo, volcano mochiko chicken, and the poke bombs! Will definitely be back! Keep doing what you're doing, fams! Looking forward to trying everything else on the menu!

Cristina G.

Yelp
Expectations were exceeded! We absolutely loved this place. The customer service was top tier. Drinks were well crafted and the food was amazing! Coming from CA and being Filipino myself, it's hard to find good Asian/Filipino food around here, but HB made me miss just a bit less! Definitely can't wait to come back :)

Krystal C.

Yelp
The food is phenomenal! Legit hawaii kine food! Highly recommend the pork belly fries! It's fiyah!

Yelp
Serendipity! Saw the sign while walking past on Lovejoy, had a hankering for Hawaii-style cooking, and popped in for a delish light lunch of poke bombs (like a hand roll, but with inari instead of nori) and an order of crispy lumpia. The cozy lounge area was available for dine-in. Next time I'll come at a proper hour for cocktails and take advantage of their host location!

Rachel B.

Yelp
I had a great lunch and drink! The pork lumpia was amazing and I loved the sauce. Also got the poke bomb which was delish. The espresso martini was lovely!! So happy to have that space open again.
