First off, this place is in a pretty good area by Portland standards! It's right off the Fremont bridge! It's got a covered seating area shared by a taco truck and and hotdog truck! It was not too busy at all so we were able to get served quickly! The lady here was such a sweetheart and was super patient when we were deciding what to eat! She suggested the fried chicken and it was absolutely amazing!! Everything about the dish tasted fresh and just really good! I definitely recommend this place for Hawaiian food because there's not too many good ones in Portland! Edit: the price is a bit higher for the amount of food but the quality is amazing and tbh for the area and quality I feel as tho the price is just

Google
Service was exceptional but the adobo was tangy (it's expected, that's what adobo is). I wasn't prepared for that and that's my fault. Came here mainly for the island block party. It was cool event, but when I thought block I thought the whole block and not just a corner.

Google
This is by far, the best Hawaiian food I have ever had! The portions are great, they are really good about customizing sauces or sides to the way you like it, and the service is top notch!! It is an extremely popular food truck for a reason, so don't be surprised if they run out of food. They can only prepare so much for a given day, so please don't be rude about it. I've watched these ladies bust their tails, even on the hottest of days, when no other food truck is open. Go give it a try, you won't regret it!!

Google
Delicious! The best Hawaiian food I have had in Portland. I even used them for catering. People, you know food is good when there isn’t a giant menu. This isn’t Shari’s Cafe. The food is actually fresh. The portions are giant and I always have some leftovers. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. My partner who is Keto loves the giant portions of meat.

My first time here, chicken was delicious, nice and tender. Mac salad was good and flavorful.

Google
Portion size is the smallest I’ve seen from a Hawaiian place in Portland. Paid for extra scoop of mac and for the large. I was really disappointed when I got it. The box is half the size of the other ones pictured. I got the shoyu chicken and it was just… sad. Not cooked in any sauce like normal, it was just shredded chicken and a very conservative amount of sauce drizzled over. Not enough flavor in it at all with the lack of sauce. The portion size was a joke as well. And I paid $3 extra for the large, I could see the rice underneath and I don’t know what a “scoop” looks like for them but my “two scoops” of meat barely looked like one. It was mainly all rice, again, devoid of any sauce dripping over it, the Mac salad was really basic and did not impress and same with the coleslaw. Honestly, save your money or go to Hawaiian time for Hawaiian. This place isn’t worth it. Worst value for food I’ve had in a long time.

Google
Delicious!!! I love a Hawaiian plate lunch. I got the shoyu (soy sauce) chicken and it was divine. My only complaint is that the slaw was chopped in such big pieces that it was hard to eat.

Google
Fantastic location run by awesome people. I will trudge past a sea of dining options to reach this bastion of mac salad and delicious island treats. I truly believe I could show up at a pepper concert and skip the line and get back stage by bringing them any side on this menu. Truly epic.

Cindy I.

Yelp
The Shoue chicken was great and loved how sticky and moist the rice was. The Kalua pork was not as flavorful as some places. Would try again and might just get the chicken.

deangelo w.

Yelp
Easily the best Hawaiian in the city outside of grinds with tries. I never thought I could be in love with something simple as garlic rice but to me the champion of it is the kahlua pig OMG so good. The owners are amazing always great service and it was awesome to discover another food cart pod I didn't know about.

Mikayla O.

Yelp
What kind of Hawaiian place doesn't have sauces out for use? 1. I ordered Kaula Pig. The menu says $14, I was charged 15. I'm an awkward person so I didn't speak up but there goes part of your tip. 2. When I received my food I asked for a couple sauces Togo and I get looked at funny. The two women working handing over some bottles to use on my plate as they were out of containers. Ok no problem. But then over heard the one woman needed the bottle back to use in the kitchen. I think it would benefit the business to have multiple. One for guests and one separate for the kitchen staff. 3. THERE'S TUNA IN THE MAC SALAD. Please keep in mind the menu did state this as : MAC SALAD- mac, mayo, salt *contains tuna* Idk maybe just call it TUNA MAC SALAD. I very much dislike fish of any kind so I was so disappointed when I got back to my office. I will say this all sounds like a personal problem , maybe I'm picky but I love other Hawaiian places and won't be back to this one.

Yelp
Over the past year we have eaten here a handful of times. We have gotten the same thing each time and I am perfectly happy with that. We simply get the shoyu chicken plate which comes with a scoop of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. We get the Hawaiian sauce on the side and always get a few extra because it's so good. We usually add a side of spam as well. I always get an extra side of the macaroni salad because I super love it! The plate is not skimpy. The chicken is always very tender with a lot of flavor. The rice is cooked perfect. It is such a solid meal and is always ready pretty quickly. You can either call it in or do it online. I would love to try other things on the menu but I like what I like! The girl that runs the food truck is super nice and attentive.

Brittney K.

Yelp
I could have sworn I left a review earlier and I am ashamed. THIS IS THE BEST HAWAIIN FOOD. I would eat the Mac salad with a shovel, the cole slaw is amazing, and every meat I've had has been on point. Always kind and quick service. I love everything. Some favorites: Kalua pig, all the chicken, and the poke (just had it today and it was so fresh, so good, and such a generous portion). So yourself a favor and get to Hapa Howies and order everything.

Joe B.

Yelp
So glad we have some Hawaiian food that is nearby. This cart has the unfortunate location of being in the back and around the corner of this food cart pod. One reason I feel you always need to walk the whole pod before making a food decision. Was happy to see the three different sizes of plates, always nice to have a choice. We had the pork and the mochko chicken (fried pieces of chicken thigh). Both were good choices and the usual sides of rice, mac salad and slaw also were done well. I do judge a place on the sides along with the main courses. Service of course was great, a really nice owner and fun to talk to.

Marc F.

Yelp
I'm not going down on my knees Begging you to aloha  Can't you see it's destiny  And Grandpa's karma When I miss the islands Try Moshiko Chicken  I've tried the Tofu version  To make you see How many scoops of Macaroni  Here is a plea Depech Mode to you Nobody Musubi As well as you do You know how Loco Moco is with Gravy  Hapa Howies That tickles my tongue In situations like these Mahalo Howie, Mahalo Howie

Joanna K.

Yelp
SO FREAKING GOOD!!! Best poki I've ever had here in the NW! Amazing service and amazing food you gotta come and try it!

Bryan K.

Yelp
Decided to visit here and I must say, it is impressive. I'm not very big on food carts but Hapa Howies is very delicious. I got a 2 meat combo with shoyu chicken and Kalua pig as well as a musubi. The food is very flavorful and cooked very well. The Hawaiian soy sauce is nice and sweet and complements the food very well. The Mac salad was a little underwhelming but the rest of the dish made up for it. I would suggest you plan for a little wait as this is not a fast food place like a majority of Hawaiian food places. If you're in the area and looking for Hawaiian, I highly recommend Hapa Howies!

Mason P.

Yelp
Was looking for Hawaiian food in downtown. Came across this and was surprised I haven't heard of it before. The fried chicken was incredible. The portions were solid especially for the price! Top 3 fav food trucks in Portland now.

Alvin P.

Yelp
Amazing little Hawaiian food spot. Have been going here since we first discovered it and taking friend & family that visit Portland. Expect the warm island treatment with every visit. Our go to is the Mochiko chicken.

Rachel D.

Yelp
Seemed like pretty authentic plate lunches. We got the mochiko chicken plate and it was tasty. Nicely fried and tender chicken, a scoop or rice, Mac salad (good, general not my fav so I'm not the best judge though) and a little container of dipping sauce. Would definitely go back to try some of their other stuff. Plus it conveniently located in a food pod so if you can't decide what to eat, there are other options around!

Brad J.

Yelp
I go to the Tigard shop, great stuff, friendly staff. KIAHA is wonderful

Andrea S.

Yelp
Loved it! Better than most Hawaiian shops in town. Only note that the $15 katsu only have about 6 slices.

Mark W.

Yelp
Been here a coupla times and it is really good, plus great location for rubba slippa weather. There is a vacuum in north portland for good plate lunch hawaiian food. Not going to school anymore I don't get local grind anymore and this place fills that void. The shoyu chicken is to die for so good. The flavors do not disappoint here. I am having a big problem with the portion/price situation tho. You gotta order extra scoops of rice and mac if you're trying to get full, which makes it like a 20 buck plate lunch. I told her I was blalah (tho I no longer look the part, still got the appetite tho) she hooked it up but still. My partner has the pictures this time but if you could see the amount of meat you would be sad like me. I thought it was fat at first glance, but it was only one small layer of meat (gang of rice tho so that killed it), very deceptive. Yea I don't even know what to say, got the two meat combo shoyu and mochiko chicken and there was barely any (gonna find that pic). Not a blalah portion at all (and the mochiko was chewy af this last time). So listen tho, the food itself deserves 5 stars, straight up. The only reason I'm not going here all the time is that they got a portion problem. Plate lunch is supposed to get you full, but I got to order so much to get my kanak attack on. So good, but I can't spend 17 dollars on plate lunch too often, but I will cuz it's bomb. Was about to give 3 stars but it way better than that (and the portion issue prob won't affect all you skinny ass hipsters anyway); and try to find mac this good in north portland, can't. Make sure you get the shoyu tho bruh.

Talia H.

Yelp
Delicious! Great food, good price. Most definitely one of my new favorites. The pork, the chicken, the Mac salad. Loved it!

Mel W.

Yelp
Sooo delicious!!!!! Shoyu chicken, not too salty or dry. The mac salad is to die for. The two ladies working the cart are super friendly and down to earth. They have great many options and are super accommodating. I definitely recommend this food truck for your authentic local Hawaiian craving!!

Christopher G.

Yelp
I feel bad leaving this review. I love supporting the food cart community and it's been hard finding good Hawaiian here in town. I ordered through GrubHub, the Shoyu Chicken and the Mochiko tofu. The order was incorrect, and I ended up with a chicken dish called Blalah Mochiko Chicken. The tofu tasted as if it was baked by texture, and had absolutely no flavoring to it. Considering the main course that arrived in place of what I had ordered also was called Mochiko (chicken) I wasn't of high expectations in flavor, and I was right. The ever so slightest bit of sweet, and that was it. Meat had a great texture, but again it was flavorless like the tofu of the same name. Rice wasn't bad, kind of dry and no matter where you go for Hawaiian, the pasta salad is always the same, nothing wow about it, except here there was some flavor. But I didn't pay the money I did, to enjoy only pasta salad. I wish that I could recommend this place, but sadly I cannot.

Shea W.

Yelp
Hapa howies is the newest cart at the piedmont food cart station! The food is tasty and the flavors shine without being drowned in sauce. My favorite is the mochiko chicken!! The owner is an extremely hard working and friendly woman.

Erika R.

Yelp
Aloha! Came here for a quick lunch. I was craving Hawaiian food! This place is exactly what I was looking for. The ladies are so nice & the dishes are big! But most importantly it's delish! Definitely coming back here!! I ordered the kalu pig

Kenny C.

Yelp
Top notch food cart! The meats are cooked to perfection, moist & bursting with hawaiian flavor. The owners are super friendly and put a lot of love into their offerings. We will be coming back again and bring friends and family with us.

Dylan H.

Yelp
Just moved up north to the neighborhood and this is the first place I've tried. Thank you Yelp for putting Hapa Howies so high on the list of places open for a weekday lunch. I have tried a few of the more well-known Hawaiian places in Portland and can't say I've ever had anything underwhelming, but this spot is top notch. By far the best quality meat. So tender. Absolutely mouth watering. I tried the shoyu chicken and kalua pig. I will be back to try the other options.

Morgan B.

Yelp
I would definitely recommend the Kalua Pig, so moist and so much flavor! All the sides were also delicious- my fav being the Mac salad and compliment each other so well. I would recommend any and everyone trying this plate!

Auzriel H.

Yelp
Came to Hapa Howies today at the Piedmont Station in Ne Portland. It was soooo delicious! I sampled the fried chicken which was tasty but ended up getting the Hawaiian style chicken and Pork combo plate with the macaroni salad and rice! The meats were both so tender melt in your mouth good with the perfect combo of sweet and salty that I love in Hawaiian food. They have a very cute sitting area with an island vibe and fabulous hospitality. Perfect easy stop for some delicious Hawaiian cuisine. Will be back soon!

Meyaka T.

Yelp
Best Hawaiian food you will ever have! Had the Shoyu chicken sliders, they were so delicious!

Robbos E.

Yelp
Local kine grinds from friendly people. Around the back of the food cart pod, so search 'em out. Two vegan options: a mochiko tofu plate lunch, and a musubi made with that mochiko tofu instead of spam. The mochiko plate lunch had diced tofu, rice, braised cabbage instead of mac salad, and two sauces: sesame or a house teriyaki. The taste and texture were good, but like a lot of other foreign (Hawai'i is a different country, read your history) food restaurants, the flavors were quieted down for the American palate. Vegetarian options include their version of loco moco! Maybe that becomes vegan if you replace the egg with tofu (not sure about ingredients of the burger and gravy; I'll have to ask next time). No Aloha Shoyu, no Hawaiian Sun drinks, but how cool to find food from home in Portland!

Ashley E.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have been big fans of Hawaiian food for quiet sometime. We tried the Portland food cart a few months ago and were immediately hooked. Our experience has also been so positive that we decided to order their take out thanksgiving meal, even though we had thanksgiving plans. Boy did they not disappoint! Everything was so good and the portions were generous. Definitely going to continue to support and will be ordering their Christmas meal as well!

Charlie T.

Yelp
Really amazing truly Hawaiian food. The Spam Musubi is to die for. Huge portions. Those grindz are ono!

F L.

Yelp
I've been three times, but have only eaten once. The first (and only successful time) was amazing! Probably my favorite Hawaiian lunch plate style I've had in PDX. Taking a star off because the other two times I went right at their listed opening time, only to be told to come back in a half hour. Not normally a problem for me, but I was in a time crunch both times. Idk if this is a normal thing for them, but maybe push your open time back if you need the prep time. At any rate, I look forward to eating there again

Christer A.

Yelp
The wife was craving Hawaiian after visiting her sister that lives on Maui earlier this year. We hit the Google machine and found Hapa Howies. To start off, the meat is on point! Flavorful, juicy and a decent portion. Sauces were OK. For us, the main staple of Hawaiian sides, and often times the reason we crave Hawaiian is the mac salad. This was lackluster to say the least. It needed salt, some sort of vinegar and the shredded onions that create that Hawaiian flavor was also missing. I also wish the kimchi was house made for it to be a $3 item in the specials menu.

Erin R.

Yelp
Great food tucked away under a beautiful shady tree. I don't typically like pasta salad but this place had some great pasta salad. The mochiko chicken was the bomb! If you love Hawaiian food check this place out in piedmont food station.

Emily S.

Yelp
The portions I received looked nothing like some of these other photos. I definitely overpaid for one small scoop of pork and it was too salty. I prefer Namu, always consistent with their portion sizes and cheaper.

M J.

Yelp
Eating in Hawaii is always a highlight of my yearly trip there and Hapa Howies gives me a taste of the island at a reasonable price. The prices are a couple of dollar more than they would be in many places on the island but the food brings you right back to a road side shack or diner with loco moco and kalua pork. The owner is super nice and the food came out quickly and was better than other Hawaiian places in Portland.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Best Hawaiian food in Portland!!! The best mac salad and mochiko chicken you will ever taste!

Joon H.

Yelp
This is the neighborhood spot! Though I can't stop getting the same thing, everything I've ever had here has been phenomenal. Good food, and friendly people goes a long way!

Julia H.

Yelp
Yummy food and a great experience with Hapa Howie's! I had a good assortment of food catered for a meeting; working with Chelsy was easy and straightforward in ordering and delivering. The food was a huge hit at the meeting, especially the Mochiko chicken and Malasadas! 10/10 in all regards, looking forward to enjoying this delicious food again! And full disclosure, I am a very picky eater but there is something for everyone here to enjoy!

Nikki W.

Yelp
Delicious Loco Mocos! Hits the spot when you are craving some Hawaiian food. Great spot in the back of the food pod away from the street.

J R.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. I have no complaints about the service and friendliness, but the food was so meh. The loco moco gravy was tasty but did not have mushrooms as seen in other pictures, and the burger was a tasteless slightly over-cooked frozen hamburger patty. The mac salad taste was okay, but the macaroni was cooked al dente, just not the right texture. I expected much better quality for $13. Pros: Friendly service, tasty gravy. Cons: Too pricey, low quality tasteless hamburger, mac salad not the right texture.

Sofia P.

Yelp
The lady serving us was really nice, one of the nicest people I've ever met working at a food cart. The food was good and came out pretty fast.

Adam P.

Yelp
Visiting Portland for the week but needed a taste of back home. Hapa Howies definitely hit the spot. The Kailua pig was so ono!

Lyra J.

Yelp
Stopped by yesterday and got the mochiko fried chicken plate which came with two scoops of rice and a scoop of mac salad. It wasn't crispy like I was expecting, but it was super flavorful and delicious! I wouldn't change a thing. If you're in the area and are craving Hawaiian food, I'd definitely recommend checking this place out. Also, it's in the Piedmont Station food cart pod so its dog friendly there's plenty of outdoor seating. Can't wait to try the other things on the menu!

Michaela D.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic. Freakin' bomb, actually. Definitely check out this cart if you're looking for true Hawaiian fare and/or you're just craving some island comfort food.

Robert S.

Yelp
Now THAT is how island food ought to taste! Friendly service really ties it all together. Note that it can be tricky to find at Piedmont Station, since it is behind the main row of carts on the east side of the pod...but once you find it, you will find yourself going back several times a week.

Leilani L.

Yelp
THE BEST HAWAIIAN FOOD IN PDX-- Chelsy is an amazing cook!! The Kalua pig is juicy and perfectly cooked, and the shoyu chicken is to die for. I crave the Portuguese sausage dish every day... if you're on the hunt for local grinds in the Portland area this is definitely the spot:))

Yahya U.

Yelp
The meat was great! But I feel like over cooked rice is a basic mistake. There Hawaiian is okay. I've had better. And another basic bitch mistake, no soy when I got a delivery order! There's better Hawaiian in town. Though the best I had was in Milwaukee a few years back. Friends moved, but I might have to travel just to have Hawaiian done to perfection!

Jaclyn P.

Yelp
Happa Howie's is one of my favorite food carts in this pod. Their mac salad is AMAZING!! Their Eau( it's like an elephant ear) is a great dessert and the owner Chealse and the other girl Stephanie are always such sweethearts. Definitely a need to try food cart.

John R.

Yelp
Randomly had a craving for Hawaiian, and thought I'd have to go to Burnside, but then I came across this place and the chicken was the best I've ever had, of any style. Go here. Now. I don't care if you just ate. Go here and order the chicken. The way the juices deeper into the rice, MY GOD! I'm getting hungry again just thinking about it.

Jackie N.

Yelp
I would definitely recommend this cart for anyone who likes delicious breakfast food. Amazing staff, amazing food, cannot complain.

Deanna T.

Yelp
Hands down the best Hawaiian in Portland. The Khalua pork is my new favorite comfort food. And the service is *such* a treat, I placed a family style to-go order for 6 ppl as my in-laws we're pulling into my driveway and she had it ready for pick-up within 30 mins. I ordered 7 dishes for 6 ppl, hoping I could snag the leftovers for lunch the next day but it was so delicious MY IN-LAWS ATE IT ALL! No leftovers for me, but no good comes from complaining about full, happy in-laws and a great dinner with family.

Livy J.

Yelp
Omg I love their malasadas... not to mention their loco moco! I can't wait to eat their food again!!!
