I regret not reading reviews before visiting this restaurant for lunch. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken with wonton soup, and while the soup was delicious, the Kung Pao Chicken was a disappointment. It didn't taste like authentic Kung Pao Chicken, which I've had many times before (and I'm part Chinese, so I know the dish well). When I asked to exchange my food, the staff gave me a hard time, insisting that their version was correct. I disagreed and asked to try the General Tso's Chicken instead. In addition, I was told my dish was coming with egg fried rice. There was no egg. It was just plain rice that seemed to have been cooked with soy sauce but had no taste. The chicken was hard and dry. Unfortunately, that dish also lacked flavor. The hospitality was also subpar. Overall, I'd say the food and service were not up to par, and you can find better Chinese food at a takeout place. Sadly, I won't be returning.

Taste overall 7/10 Main dish Bok choi beef with white rice 7/10, Hot sour soup 7/10 both have a pretty standard taste; Service 7.5/10 Cleanness 8/10; Portion with the price (lunch special for me)10/10; Vibe 6.5/10 a small chinese restaurant with a noise of busy midday busy nyc, one restroom, no free wifi. Overall, I would say 7/10 as a good cheap place to have a decent food in nyc. Note that the menu prices have already been increased from the google review’s menu 3 years ago.

Google
This was the first time I discovered this place walking around the streets of New York City. I ordered Vegetable Noodle Soup. It was done perfectly. The soup made it feel so comforting and nice for the windy day to match with. All the veggies were well cooked and placed perfectly. The noodles made it to my tummy in no time. Do go for it.

Google
I live nearby, and have probably ordered from here five or six times a year for a number of years. Is the food amazing? No it is not. Is the food awful? No it is not. I find it perfectly decent for lunch. As for cost, I usually get The shrimp with mixed vegetables lunch special which includes a soup for about $12 including tip. It has enough food for two lunches for me. So, six dollars for a lunch in Midtown seems very reasonable. I noticed that a lot of the one-star reviews are mostly about the customer service. I can’t speak to that. I would recommend that you order through Seamless, so there is a record of what you ordered. I would also advise against eating in the establishment, though I can’t say that from personal experience.

Google
This would have to be the nastiest Chinese restaurant in Nyc. The sweet and sour chicken was literally fried batter, with NO CHICKEN on the inside. Just hard crunchy batter. You can’t make this stuff up!! The egg roll had an awful smell, like old cabbage. Fried rice was stale and bland. No flavor. The food went in the trash! Order at your own risk! Giving this business your money, is truly throwing your money away!

Google
I don’t like leaving reviews of local businesses, but this place is hit or miss it is my go to for greasy Chinese food however, the last several times I’ve ordered sweet-and-sour chicken it’s come out like chicken jerky. They overcook the chicken and it has the consistency of shrimp tails. Inedible. So very disappointing attached is video and photos.

Google
Very very good and friendly pleasant service! I will certainly be back! I placed an order online and had made a mistake by SCHEDULING the pickup for the following day (pay attention when ordering online) 12 hours later than I wanted it. When I came in, my order wasn't ready because it was in their system as for tom for lunch (which is cool that you can schedule future orders) but anyway, the kind lady prepare my order anyway, even though they were going to close in 15 minutes! So grateful for that and it was DELICIOUS! I ordered the General Tsos and Oragne Chicken with white rice and spring rolls (crispy and crunchy 😍) and the egg roll was good too!

Henry A

Google
Sorry but this is not good Chinese. The chicken had a bad smell and the Dumplings where to dried. Fried rice looked black. Waitress added her own tip without asking for two people.

Joash O.

Yelp
The best value in NYC! Lunch specials are $12 for an entree, rice, and soup or soda. Need I say more??? They are best for lunch and their moo shoo is really good at any time of day. Please help support this restaurant. I don't know why more people don't know about how good their boneless spare rib? Happy Family is my happy place and will be yours as soon as you walk in!

Yelp
I have been coming to happy family since last I first moved here in Hells Kitchen 5 years ago. I want to highly recommend them and know you are getting great quality food for less.

Armando S.

Yelp
I got fries and wings for $10 they gave me a small fries and 4 wings. Not worth $10 sorry but this is not okay.

kristine s.

Yelp
Food is fine nothing special but if you try to pay cash be careful cause they like to decide that they get a tip my meal was $11.16 and I handed her $15 in cash and she gave me $.85 even after I had to ask about it and was rude about me wanting my change Pay with card... lesson learned

Yelp
Yesterday on May 21, 2024, I went to the happy family restaurant and ordered vegetable fried rice and shredded pork with spicy peppers and dry tofu. When the woman said with jalapeños peppers I said yes because I thought jalapeños peppers were in the shredded pork. Anyway, I left and came back to pick up my order. When I got home I realized she had given me shredded beef with jalapeño. So I called the restaurant and told the woman who answered that I had the wrong order and that I ordered the shredded pork with spicy peppers and dry tofu. She told me to bring the incorrect order back and she will replace it with what I wanted. So I took it back and exchanged the order. When I got back home and open the bowl and to my astonishment it was filled with a bunch of tofu on top and very little pork on the bottom. I was so disappointed!! It's not the first time I've experienced a f'd up order on purpose. Honestly, disappointed is to kind! I was furious and angry. To be treat with such disrespect was uncalled for. They lack an understanding about customer service and professionalism. I won't be going back! I'm done! Warning to anyone reading this don't waste your time or money at that restaurant because they don't give a damn about their customers!! Or they're loyalty! I'm so very upset with the owner's treatment of me. So very disrespectful! And uncalled for.

Jacinda M.

Yelp
Garbage. No other words. The sweet and sour chicken wasn't chicken. No meat in it. Just hard batter. Eggroll smelled horrible. The cheese wontons are dry and not eatable.

Mingrui Z.

Yelp
Always like the food here, especially the lunch special menu! It's delicious, homey and delivers fast.

Bruce H.

Yelp
I have eaten here many times over several years. The quality of food has improved greatly over the last year or so. During Covid, I have had many different dishes. Today, I had sliced fish with black bean sauce, bok choy, and vegetable fried rice. All were very good. The menu was expanded and contains more unique dish, which I believe are Shanghainese dishes. I see no reason for a low rating currently. The food is tasty and fresh. Delivery is fast and well packed. Give it a second chance.

Kristina L.

Yelp
Super good place run by nice people :) Really solid food - the pan fried noodle was crispy to perfection and the chicken w broccoli was so tender and tasty. Would come back again and do takeout or sit in! Perfect for Chinese food cravings!

Scott K.

Yelp
First review on Yelp, and I have to say that the overall rating we see on this page now is a total injustice to what it actually should be. Everything I ordered from this place is great: Chicken and Mushrooms, General Tsos, Boneless Spare Ribs, Lo Mein, Dumplings, and even their Fried Rice. A ton of cheap NYC establishments get a really poor quality yellow rice that you usually see at halal carts, but this restaurant actually takes the time to fry white rice, with seasoning, on a high heat wok. Prices are also outstanding and delivery is shockingly fast. To those who give this place a one or two star - y'all should stop writing reviews on Yelp altogether.

Daniel L.

Yelp
Took a chance on this place again and it sure paid off. Seems like they really got things turned around in 2021. I don't normally give reviews, but I felt compelled to give one for Happy Family. The lunch special is a terrific value; I got three entrees w/ rice and three soups for $27. Taste and quality were also great. Five stars all around! If you're looking for good quality "cheap" Chinese takeout, this is your spot.

Patrick W.

Yelp
The portion size is large and the price is cheap. Good for money. However the taste is kinda meh.

Christopher Y.

Yelp
Super chill spot, food was greatttttt. Seated right away will def be coming back here again. Got the chicken w broccoli & beef pan fried noodles

Whitney B.

Yelp
I don't enjoy writing bad reviews.... short and sweet, SAVE YOUR YOURSELF & YOUR APPETITE. I regretfully ordered from here through Grubhub and my experience could not have been anymore disappointing. Everything arrived smelly and not completely cooked. "Gross Family Chinese"

Donovan R.

Yelp
Food is always mediocre, and the staff isn't friendly at all. I only come here when I'm starving and desperate.

Amber C.

Yelp
I did not eat here, but rather came to use their printing services in the back. Tried to print at the CVS across the street but they referred me here. When I first came in, they said it would cost $12 to print the Chinese visa application. I said I already had it filled out, so then they said $5 to print it. But I had some other documents I needed to print as well, and they said $5 for the first 5 pages, then $1 for any other pages I need to print... so... what?? I ended up telling them I did not want to use their services as it was a little too pricy for me. They just said ok, don't come here then. Pretty rude and unprofessional, and extremely pricy for printing.

Peipei Y.

Yelp
Would leave zero star if I could. This restaurant does side business in the back. Charges $5 for 3 pages of paper printing. I told him that I need just one more page paper for different documents, he told me to pay $12!!! This place really greedy and ripoff! Definitely report them to related legal department!

Craig J.

Yelp
Food is alway delicious. Prices are a little high. But overall it's a great Chinese restaurant that I continue to revisit

Ralph A.

Yelp
Amazing Chinese food and very friendly people who work there make it my favorite Chinese restaurant!

Joanne J.

Yelp
I ordered my food for pick up as soon as they opened and asked for lunch pricing for the item I picked (couldn't find it on the menu) and "the owner" sounded annoyed by the question and said to just come in and hung up. I called again and placed the initial order to make sure it was ready for pick up. I went to pick up my food at 10:55AM and they charged me dinner price ($18) because lunch starts at 11:00AM. I politely asked to honor the lunch price and she blamed me for not understanding her. I said I no longer want the food and she complained that she had to throw away the food. She could have easily honored the lunch price but too bad she lost a customer and wasted the food. Walked out without my food.

Minafawzy K.

Yelp
Great service, perfect Chinese food! Always fast and reliable, my favorite in the city

M K.

Yelp
From what I've found on my chicken wing, I will not order from this place again. Chicken wing with a tag (sticker) on? Scary.

Abbi W.

Yelp
Very good food!!! Super clean and very polite workers! 10/10 and also right across from our hotel!

Tim R.

Yelp
Please see the picture, This is what they pass off as Seafood Ramen, it had very little taste and non of the ingredients typical Ramen has. There was a guy standing half in half out of the kitchen picking his teeth with a tooth pick almost the entire time, except when he went to the door and held it open for about 5 minutes and let all the warm air out of the restaurant and All the cold wind in while he talked on his cell phone. The rest of the people that worked there were playing different music on each phone at the same time, very annoying. We tried to dress up our soups with salt, soy sauce and chili powder, nothing worked ended up paying our bill and left.

Valentina C.

Yelp
I honestly don't know why there are so many bad reviews for this place. I live a few blocks away and have always enjoyed coming for takeout. The restaurant serves authentic Shanghainese cuisine, and not your typical Americanized Chinese food. The front desk lady is also very nice, always greeting me with a smile. I recommend trying their scallion pancake, noodle soup (especially preserved vegetables with pork), and rice cake.

Michael L.

Yelp
Went there for the lunch special. It's nice to have a classic Chinese takeout spot in the city

Luna K.

Yelp
This place surprised me, I didn't realize an order of "steamed mixed vegetables" could be messed up. Sat down, our order came out within a few minutes. Vegetables were incredibly under cooked and almost raw. My husband's chicken lo mien also came about incredibly fast, and didn't have much flavor. The chefs came were sitting around the restaurant like it was their living room, the waitress was not very friendly. Not really sure how this place stays in business to be honest. Needless to say we wont be going back.

Ken H.

Yelp
Great authentic Chinese food! We've come back 3 times this week alone. Friendly service and fast times for both dine-in and pickup orders. Would recommend!

Herman W.

Yelp
I actually did not eat there. I went in to use their printer as I was applying for visa from the nearby Chinese consulate. I hope you will never have to come here. They charge 5 bucks for the privilege of printing a few pages. I was sent back by the consulate to print more and they charged me 5 bucks again. When I complaint it is expensive- their response was "don't come" Wow... what kind of attitude is that? Frankly the food smells so greasy I wouldn't want to go back to this hole. I hope you don't have to too.

Victor A.

Yelp
Food is fantastic that's best Chinese food I've had in a really long time shrimp The lobster sauce is unbelievable the lunch specials are ridiculously cheap and the food is plentiful I highly recommend it. The boneless spear ribs are so good.

Andy M.

Yelp
Best place for chinese food. I always order shanghainese food from this place, and once I ordered every single meal of the week here. Great employees too. I just love it so much

Rachel C.

Yelp
Leaving a review because this place has been a consistent place where I can get good food, great service and get a little piece of home. I am pretty sure I have tried just about every dish on their breakfast menu and I haven't tasted anything I haven't liked. There have been so many days during this pandemic when I just felt homesick and this place has come through each time. I recommend trying their xiao long bao, rice cakes, vegetable buns, and homemade soy milk with fried dough sticks for a late lazy breakfast! For lunch/dinner menu their beef noodle is great too.

Johnny Y.

Yelp
I was happy to see a Chinese restaurant that serves roast pork and roast duck Chinatown style. What I got looked like it was taken out of a garbage can.. I was disappointed. The box wasn't even full, when the delivery guy brought it up the box was tilted in the bag and all the food was leaning towards one side. WHEN A BOX HAS NO FOOD IT LEANS! That's how you know they didn't fill the box. I had more rice than meats. The name is also wrong... it shouldn't be called three meats over rice because it's technically 2, the egg doesn't even count as a meat. The "food" cost me $14.40.. I repeat.. $14.40!! I could've went to the pizzeria or the deli around the corner and gotten better quality food. I have attached pictures of my food. My coworkers saw my food and they all made fun of my food.. I never been laughed at for my food before and this was embarrassing to see them go "what are you eating?!" I'll tell you what I'm eating.. something that looks like a toddler put it in an easy bake oven and decided to throw the oven around. I had a couple bites and ordered from Royal Siam which was so much better. I am never ordering from here again and will tell everyone else to stay away. Listen to the reviews people!! This is my first and last time ordering from them! STAY AWAY!! The whole experience from getting the food from the delivery guy to eating it was horrible. I also wish Yelp has an option where you can leave half a star, this place doesn't even deserve one star.

Alexandra M.

Yelp
I am originally from China and this is very good Shanghai food. Not typical Americanized chinese food and I guess that's where all the bad reviews come from. Their lunch special is very good and worth the price. Aromatic beef is the best in nyc. There are other items worth trying too.

Anastasia J.

Yelp
Dumplings are nasty!! Not even cooked sauce was disgusting. Lo mein was okay. Service is great though!!

Julia O.

Yelp
This place has horrible customer service. The lady was rude and would not take our order over the phone. I will not support this restaurant.

N F.

Yelp
Firstly, they do not take COVID precautions. They did not ask me or anyone who came in after me for vaccine card. One of the cooks came out from the kitchen and he was not wearing a mask! They don't place paper liners on tables so you're exposed to plastic/fabric cloth used by previous person. Secondly, the service was poor. My meal came out a few minutes after I started on my soup, so I felt hurried and that my meal would get cold. Thirdly, the General Tao Chicken I ordered was *not* fresh, it was hard like a rock and tasted expired. I didn't finish it and couldn't wait to leave. I will never be returning to this restaurant.

Janice L.

Yelp
Ate there once, i went there because my friend and i were craving stew beef with carrot for lunch. not the best price for the food you get since it wasn't that great. The carrot wasn't cooked too well (i would prefer it softer) and the beef was a little too overcooked. the only thing that was acceptable was the sauce... There are far better place to eat around hells kitchen than to eat at this place!

Chris T.

Yelp
Terrible food. Ordered shredded pork and garlic sauce and shrimp egg foo young. Both were extremely bland. Shrimp egg foo young had zero gravy! Instead they included some sort of container that contained a sweetened soy sauce. Egg foo young is known for its thick gravy that's full of flavors. Don't even think the dishes were salted. In the comments I said fried rice as I didn't see anything that had a selection for white or fried rice and later notice the order was adjusted for +2.00 due to the fried rice per dish. They could've called or something if that was the case or specify what rice it comes with. Egg rolls taste like they're super old. The one star comes from the quick delivery of food that was completely flavorless. Pork was just greasy. I wouldn't recommend anything from this place. You guys call yourself happy family but I sure am not a happy customer.

A J.

Yelp
Worse delivery service every. Waited over 2 hours for a delivery 6 lbs away. Never again!

Cynthia Y.

Yelp
Super shady restaurant that must be working with the Chinese Consulate two blocks away. While at the consulate, I asked one of the security guards where I could print something and he told me to talk to one of the guys sitting in the waiting area. This man asked me what I needed to do and stated that there was a Chinese restaurant with computers and a printer a couple of blocks away. After making a couple of phone calls and getting things sorted, I headed over to Happy Family and WTFFFFFF that same guy at the consulate was managing the back room with the computers?!?! I thought maybe the heat was getting to me and that maybe I was imagining things, but I am 99.9% sure that this was the SAME GUY. DOES HE HANG OUT AT THE CONSULATE AND DIRECT PEOPLE TO HIS OWN RESTAURANT?!?!?! They had three laptops and on printer. Inevitably you will find a couple of other people here trying to print their applications and documents. One page costs $5. If you're willing to go/travel somewhere else, please do, because otherwise you'd be supporting this awful business. If, like me, you pretty much have lost the will to live at this point and want to prevent numerous trips to the Chinese Consulate, then fork over those $5 and never come back here again. In any case, I couldn't tell you anything about their food other than the fact that it looked pretty bad and unappetizing. It looked like generic Americanized Chinese food. Please don't do this to yourself. Panda Express probably tastes 100x better.

Nicolas K.

Yelp
Well, the bathroom is clean. That's the only reason why this place gets one Star to begin with. The food is horrendous. Literally find a kebab stand down the road to nourish yourself instead. Or a lean cuisine. I've eaten play-doh that was more tasty than this garbage.

Charmaine P.

Yelp
I ordered lunch for my coworkers and myself and the food took 2 hours to be delivered. When we received the food it was cold and soggy. I ordered Beef and Broccoli and the Beef was very rubbery. when I submitted my very they replied " I don't believe you . I WILL NEVER EVER ORDER FROM THIS PLACE AGAIN!!!

Roger C.

Yelp
There aren't many good things to say about this restaurant. Me and my dad popped by shortly after I moved into the neighborhood and it was dead inside. We ordered a couple dishes, fried fish and roast pork, which weren't the best. Compared to some of the other restaurant options in the area, like China Xiang, Ollie's, or further down, Golden City Restaurant, you can find infinitely better options at every different price point. Save yourself the try and go to another place. Hopefully this place can turn itself around!

Samit B.

Yelp
Poor food quality, bad service. What else is there to say? To add insult to an already bad experience, they had the shrimp dumplings priced at $5.99 on the menu and on the bill, they billed me for $7.50. Not a big deal, but definitely representative of the unethical nature of present management. Save your money. Avoid this place. They seem to be affiliated with the Chinese consulate across the street and seems to function as a quasi back office for them. Draw your own conclusions!!

T N.

Yelp
I give zero star if I can. I ordered from seamless and they said they didn't receive our order but when I call them they had our order. They lied. They just forgot to make food for our order. I got the order confirmation to email and my phone too and they knew what I ordered. And still they said they didn't receive it. Never ever order here again.

T K.

Yelp
I hate to give bad reviews or see small businesses close but this restaurant needs to hire a new head chef and work on their recipes. The general Taos was soggy and bland. No pork in the wonton soup. Pepper steak was too chewy. Fried rice wasn't great. Delivery was ok (50 min from ordering to door 11 blocks away). Maybe there's other dishes that are good here but things have not changed (I ordered here years ago and figured I'd give it another shot since seamless offered 35% off)

Shawna F.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY THE WORST EXCUSE FOR FOOD I HAVE EVER HAD IN 40 YEARS OF LIFE!! Happy...shouldn't be in the title. Service was horrific, thought it could only get better from there. I was wrong. It turns out it got much worse. Only edible thing of a 50 dollar order was instant white rice. Eat out of a garbage can before going here. Pissed and disgusted. A whole new meaning to the title of the town "HELL'S KITCHEN

David N.

Yelp
I went in for wonton soup because I'm not feeling well. The older Chinese guy in the front asked me "for her or to go?", I said "for here". He goes "okay sit down, what you order?" I go to sit down and say "just wonton soup". He immediately goes "oh no, there's a minimum. Wonton soup to go". So I order my wonton soup. He give it to me, of course doesn't say "have a good day" to try and make it a little better. I always expect bad service from Chinese restaurants but to not allow me to sit down and eat soup that I'm buying from your restaurant, that's crazy. First and last time ever coming here.
