"“You either want to be him or to sleep with him,” my friend Louise said while out to lunch at a newly opened Xianese restaurant in Monterey Park where Wang’s face appeared atop every table. “He’s so androgynous, ageless, air brushed. But his dimples say that he’s approachable.” It’s in these moments where Wang moves from an ambient advertisement to the subject of conversation that makes his brand so sticky. As long as people keep talking about his name, face, and firm, he’ll keep showing up at every meal." - Cathy Chaplin

Vegetarians delight when craving Chinese food. Solid tasty dishes and excellent selection! We particularly enjoyed the chicken nuggets with orange glaze and sweet and sour fried mushrooms. Nice family casual ambiance and great service! Easy free parking garage connected to the plaza too!

We waited and skipped out on this place last year because the wait was ridiculously long on Lunar New Year. We managed to only wait 30 mins this year because LNY landed on a Weekday. You write your name on the waiting list. Make sure you stay inside to hear your name because these people have no shame. I have witnessed, those that know the language, tried to smooch their way to the top and you need to pay attention and be ready to interfere. There is no order of first come first serve, if a table clears up for a party of 6, they could skip over the list and call that group. It’s terrible. While we were waiting, I studied what to order to save time. The physical menu, take out menu, and on line do not match. It’s so unorganized and not categorized. It needs to be redone with photos. Why put “vege” in front of a word when the entire restaurant is vegetarian! The portions are huge, meant for family banquet style and the price reflects that averaging $17.99 each. We are a party of 2 but ordered: -Corn cream and pumpkin soup ($13.59): Sweet like corn from a can. -Deep fried tofu: Not sure when they fried this because it wasn’t piping hot and the edges were not crispy. It was tofu with barely any batter. It was so bad that we had to tell the server to let the chef know so it doesn’t affect anyone else. -Eggplant w brown sauce ($17.99): This was the only egg plant combo option that wasn’t spicy. -Sweet and sour fish ($19.59): This was the only fish option that wasn’t spicy. -Walnut shrimp: I asked for walnut shrimp but something else came out instead. It was shrimp with mushrooms and nuts. My mom liked it so I didn’t complain. The quality of food was just meh. The crowd impacted the service and queue. I’ve tasted better vegetarian restaurants near by. I can now cross this one off my list. Sadly, we will not return.

Google
Great vegetarian Chinese food! We ordered tofu, mushroom and eggplant dish with sweet and sour soup! Very tastey! Great that it’s all vegetarian!

Google
It used to be amazing! What happened? The food was gluey, bland and very oily. Nothing was good, we didn’t even bother taking any leftovers. It’s quite a drive for us to get here and we all decided this was our last time 🙁

Google
Vegetarian delight!! Although I am not, I do love it here!! The Kung pao chicken is made with oyster mushrooms and it is absolutely my favorite! My other favorite is their assorted casserole.. the “ fish”’taste like seaweed Japanese style is so delicious.. but it is too much lunch for two… a fantastic chinese restaurant for vegetarian!!

Google
Authentic delicious and healthy food with a lot of veggie options. Great local spot and definitely recommend.

Good service from the staff. Food was excellent too. Easy parking by roadside

Google
My favorite Chinese food in LA. Vegan, delicious, family style, and they have a free parking garage. I always get the orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken, beef and broccoli, or the sizzling black pepper beef

Dawla A.

Yelp
Still delicious after all this time. We ordered Spring rolls, Sesame chicken, Chow mein, Singapore noodles, Rice, Buddahs delight, Honey walnut shrimp. Service is always good. I wish there was one in Pasadena.

Yelp
PERFECT place, especially if you're vegetarian or if you want really good vegetarian food! My family and I visited this place for the very first time after hearing about it years ago and I'm glad they are still here and open at the time of this review. We ordered their broccoli with beef dish and the beef was SO tasty. I wish they added more of the "beef" because it was so yummy! We also ordered their fish in sweet and sour sauce and their orange peel chicken. ALL were really good and I highly recommend them! As others have pointed out, even though the names of dishes have "pork," "fish," or pretty much any meat, they are not real. EVERY dish is vegetarian. All meats are fake, but don't let that deter you from trying this resto out. Everything was delicious and even though it is on the pricey side for the portion sizes, it's worth it if you have vegetarians in your family or friend group, or don't mind the best vegetarian food around. This is honestly simply because of the massive menu and options they have. TRY THIS PLACE BEFORE JUDGING!

Yelp
It was Chinese New Year and i was told we have to eat vegetarian. We ordered a simple vegetarian dish with cabbage, carrots, lotus root, fungus. It was very plain. We waited about 25 min. In fact we were the last one yo get in. The guests mostly dressed in red. Very family oriented. The servers were quick. The restaurant is facing the street. There is free parking on the bottom, and we literally had to walk a block to get to it.

Maite M.

Yelp
I have been coming to Happy Family for close to 10 years and love it! It is really easy to order pick up online or on the phone. I highly recommend this vegan gem next time you're in MPK! Support vegan small businesses!

T C.

Yelp
I have a vegan friend and she loves this place. We come here to celebrate her bday every now and then. The service is nice and the food is delicious for being vegetarian food. I'd eat this stuff over Tofurky, Soyrizo, and the Impossible burger. Our go-tos: Basil eggplant, Deep-fried Tofu, Fish in Brown Sauce, House Special Clay pot, and the Chow Fun noodles. They don't have many places like this anymore and we're happy Happy Family is surviving all of the changes in the SGV dining scape.

Aditya V.

Yelp
Unfortunately this was terrible, tasteless food. No flavor, only grease. Lacking salt, lacking spice, lacking savor. One star for friendly service.

Ali F.

Yelp
Food is amazing. They have the veggie version of the favorites. Pork, chicken etc. atmosphere is family dining and sharing. Service is amazing. Really nice place and convenient across the street from courtyard hotel.

Mar R.

Yelp
Sorry to say, this used to be my favorite restaurant however, about 7 month ago I went to pick up my order and that's when I saw a cockroach coming out of the bottom of the registered. I felt so so disgusted I threw away the whole bag with the food, I never went back after that day I couldn't after I saw that I imagine how the kitchen was I am very sorry I had to say something

Anita C.

Yelp
Had Thanksgiving Dinner here last night with family and it was SO good. We haven't been to this restaurant let alone this plaza since they remodeled so it has been YEARS since we last had it. The food was just as delicious as we remembered it and every bit nostalgic. Our server actually remembered us too from 10+ years ago! There were 7 of us and WE. WERE. STARVING. So onto the food: We ordered Pickled Napa Cabbage with Vermicelli, Vege Kidney with Basil, Tofu with Veggies and Brown Sauce, Vege Sesame Chicken, 2 rounds of Vege Popcorn Chicken, Braised String Beans, Fried Noodle Bread, Bean Curd Skin wrapped with Veggies over Spinach, Vege Fish with Hot Bean Sauce, Deep Fried Taro Ribs with Sweet & Sour Sauce, and to finish everything off we had their Sweet Taro Dessert. Yeah we were hungry hahaha. We finished everything. Would highly recommend this place and although this restaurant is a bit out of the way for me now I will try my best to visit more often! Super yummy!

Joann V.

Yelp
4 stars Came here with family last night and ordered a bunch of food - Seasame "Chicken", Tofu Balls w/ Vermicelli, Sizzling Plate Tofu, Mushrooms, and Snowpeas, Stir-fried Lotus Root w/ vegetables and woodear mushrooms, & Fried Eggplant. I would recommend everything except for the Tofu Balls. The Tofu Balls were mixed with something (potatoes, maybe?), so it was very grainy. If texture wasn't an issue for me, I'd say the dish would have been ok. Sauce/soup was pretty good. Favorite dishes of the night was the Sizzling Plate of Tofu and Vegetables & Sesame "chicken". Would recommend to any vegetarian/vegan people out there. And sorry the lack of pics - we ate almost everything before I even thought to take pictures!

Rock D.

Yelp
Love their chow mein crispy & sweet sour 'chick' choices. Very kind staff came thru in the clutch at several instances.

Chen T.

Yelp
service was good, that i won't complain. but their food, honestly needs an upgrade. was there for an event and the food was either over salty, near burnt, sticky, soggy, that or their food just tastes the same but at a higher price.

Sand O.

Yelp
I love them 80% of their menu is fully vegan and please order the compound chicken or the chow mein with wheat gluten it's the bomb!! And the corn soup add lots of oil chili to it

linda z.

Yelp
Food is always amazing here . Service is either hit or miss . Today Karen was nice . The staff aren't big talkers ever . But today the server didn't seem bothered by us being there lol. The San Bernardino location has the best customer service . But again the food is always good

Vance K.

Yelp
This place was amazing. I tried some of each of the three dishes we ordered, and they were all fantastic. Also, I didn't realize that they closed between lunch and dinner, so even though we came in for a late lunch and were close to their closing time, we never felt rushed or pressured. I can't wait to go back the next time I'm close by.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Service was very good-only reason it's 3 stars and not 2. Food was mediocre. Portions were fine but very overpriced for vegetarian Chinese food in Monterey Park. About $18/ dish.

Vraj P.

Yelp
As a vegetarian, it has always been hard to find quality Chinese food. I can confidently say that Happy Family does it right! The flavors and spices were perfectly crafted. We had so much food and finished all of it. The restaurant itself is slightly smaller but can definitely accommodate large groups if you come early. The people working there were also great and friendly atmosphere. Overall, love this place and will definitely be back next time I am in LA!

Christine Q L.

Yelp
fried mushroom "chicken" number 525 i rate it 5/5 for crunch, taste and healthiness hot and sour soup is the perfect temperature granted they are understaffed but their food comes out fast. free hot tea. huge portions. each dish serves two hungry people. yelp check in for free pudding is no longer valid

Steve H.

Yelp
Always good. Coming here for 20+ years and old location down the street back in the day. Ok food always good. Service good. This trip a few mess ups. No Hot n' Sour soup for lunch special. And no free small pudding via Yelp offer. No replacement, no sorry. Ok not that big of a deal. Thanks.

Sammi C.

Yelp
Crispy seaweed roll with taro....definitely not 100% taro...texture very pasty...actually tasted sweet like taro in pastries Simmered vege duck - light tasting beancurd roll Sauteed rice cake with chopped mustard green.....the order of the words should swap becuz i cant find the rice cake...just a plate with big pile of muatard green Vege kidney with basil...the vege kidney tastes sour aka turned bad...there is more side component mushroom than actual vege kidney...very salty brown sauce Vege sliced sausage mushroom & bellpepper with blackbean sauce - the brown sauce is already salty + blackbean sauce = too salty Vege deep fried house chicken - crunchy fried mushroom in black vinegar brown sauce Definitely don't taste like before..everything isbjust soaked in "brown sauce" ... quality not cobtrolled otherwise wouldvhave known food gone bad $20/plate...I expect better quality food

Luisamaria F.

Yelp
Continuously the flavor of choice for the family and myself. While we can only delight ourselves to visit the establishment once in a while, we are delighted every time to find how the food is as reliable as ever. The prices have gone up since pandemic, as they have every where else, but we'd happy choose to spend our money here. Vegetarian, wholesome Chinese food.

Franklin M.

Yelp
I was dragging my feet to come here for dinner because I thought it's not going to taste great. We ordered the Chicken with orange peel, Shanghai Style Sautéed Rice Cake, Fried Rice with Pineapple, and White rice. I was amazed how flavorful everything was and we enjoyed the food. I especially liked the crispy fake chicken which had a perfect crunch to it. The atmosphere and interior decor is a bit boring.

Anita L.

Yelp
As a vegan I really wanted to like the restaurant but boy did it let me down. I ordered the Taiwanese mifen and specifically asked my desert to be served last, not only were they served at the same time but the mifen tasted NOTHING like the authentic version that I grew up with. Also didn't like how they still used styrofoam and plastic bags for the takeout. It's so bad for the environment. Probably won't go back :(

Drew K.

Yelp
Really good food and big portions. We tried two different clay pot dishes and despite having similar ingredients they tasted very different. The Singapore noodles were such a massive plate we had leftovers. Much larger than the servings I've had at non vegetarian restaurants.

Celeste N.

Yelp
This place made me think I can go vegetarian bc of the options it opened my mind to. I personally like the flavor of the minced squab in lettuce wrap (4 for every order), and it does come with a lot of crunchy wonton skins under. I also get either the orange "chicken" or sweet and sour "chicken" (it's actually just fried mushrooms). During lunch, you get a free bowl of soup and choice of white or brown rice with every lunch special order. My family has been coming for years now

Rick S.

Yelp
I always to this Chinese restaurant once a month and they treat me and my mom very well the food is healthy and delicious and the service is great I recommend this place to all my friends.

Nadia A.

Yelp
It's kind of sad to see this restaurants ambience and service decline. I grew up coming to this restaurant and year by year this restaurant has been declining. The food is not as delicious as other competitors. The waiters need to be more attentive. The walls have stains. The tables have plastic covers. I remember the tables were more presentable. There's boxes on the hall ways. Not sure if it's a safety hazard. If I were the owner I would definitely take some time to make this restaurant more presentable. Definitely will look into other options before coming back. It's heartbreaking to write this review but I wanted to be transparent.

Brian F.

Yelp
Back down to 4 stars for this place. Food is still fine, minced squab in lettuce is still a standout, but buffet is no more, and the menu now shows two separate price increases, with prices through the roof (squab is now $14.99, Singapore Style Fried Rice Noodle is now $19.59, White Rice is now $2.29 extra). Good, not transcendent, but the value proposition is entirely gone.

Christine S.

Yelp
Unexpectedly delightful! I'm not vegetarian but do try to eat plant-based more often now. I've been a bit apprehensive about vegetarian Chinese products because of the processed look and taste, however I was pleasantly surprised by this meal. The items I'd highly recommend: - Corn and tofu soup - Veggie chicken with orange peel - Bird's nest - Stir fry asparagus with Japanese yam - Sweet taro dessert Overall you cannot go wrong with any of the veggie-heavy dishes. It's light on the palate - not too oily nor salty. I would definitely revisit.

Karla C.

Yelp
This place gets 3 stars b/c of their mediocre service. Workers seem uninterested and unhappy to be there. The food used to be a lot tastier before, but for some reason, the taste isn't the same anymore. Food is just okay now and it's about $20 a plate. If the service was better, it would improve the entire experience. Will I return? Eh, maybe in the future.

Shamali J.

Yelp
The pumpkin tofu hot pot was amazing! The food here is exactly what I look for when I think of Chinese. Feels authentic

Ada Z.

Yelp
We placed an order over the phone for to-go. The food was done on time when we came to pick it up. However, they messed up on the order. We ordered pork and bamboo shoots and veggie fish with sweet-and-sour sauce (but got spicy bean sauce). Veggie shredded pork and baby bamboo shoots: When I first saw the dish I thought it was going to be very flavorful because of the coloring, but it was really bland. It didn't have much flavor to it at all, sadly. The "pork" is actually tofu, and has the texture of fried shredded fried tofu that isn't crispy. Overall, 3/5. Veggie fish with spicy bean sauce: The sauce was tangy and spicy and actually pretty yummy. Nevertheless, I purposely ordered a non-spicy sauce to share with my toddler, and they gave me the wrong one. The "fish" was a bit dry and tough, but I applaud them for being able to mimic overdone fish, using what I believe was tofu. I actually enjoyed this dish and sauce pairing, but it was a bit spicy, so it's not sharable with babies who can't handle spicy foods. Overall, 4/5. The portions are definitely sharable with families. I ordered two dishes for myself and my toddler, but we didn't even finish one dish. All in all, this was a decent vegetarian restaurant, but I wish my bamboo shoot dish had more salt, and they hadn't messed up on my order with the fish.

Tammy L.

Yelp
Just perfect! I got #567 Skin bean curd wrap (inside had mushroom & napa cabbage) over a bed of spinach in a light soup-like sauce. When asked for "less salt", the waitress explained that the dishes are not salty. She was right - not oily or salty like home cooking. I had it without rice, but with ordinary plain Steamed bun. Nice complimentary corn & tofu soup. Comfortable, clean, good service.

Yadira R.

Yelp
I use to eat here a lot a few years back, and hadn't been in a while. I was craving veggie Chinese so my husband and I came in for dinner, it was very empty so i understand maybe that's why not a lot of the employees were wearing masks but it still made me feel unease. Having lost four family members to covid , I don't feel comfortable with the chefs specifically not wearing masks while cooking and serving food. Maybe this is more personal to me since I have lost a lot of family due to covid, but also I guess just other restaurants take a little more precaution compared to this one. The food was okay, I ordered lettuce wraps and noodles to share and it was pretty tasty but also weirdly rushed they brought over our check with the food even though it was still about 40 mins before closing time.

mari o.

Yelp
Want some good Chinese vegan food? Come here!! Quick service and parking is in abundance! The portion is large too so you'll have stuff to take home. The menu is extensive but my must try's are; fried mushroom, orange chicken mushroom , mustard green with mushrooms.. oh did I mention I love mushrooms?!

Caitlin D.

Yelp
Vegan Chinese food which is not easy to find. Food is good, but very pricey. Each dish is typically $15-20, they are a decent size but still think it's a bit much for what you're getting. I don't like fake meat so haven't tried any of those dishes here. Fried Ho fun - flat noodles, good flavor, probably one of my favorite dishes I've had here, not too greasy Eggplant with basil - tasty, watch out for the chunks of ginger though Dry sautéed string beans - good vegan version, but not as good as with meat for those who are not vegetarian Crispy oyster mushrooms - I like these, deep fried with garlic peppers basil and ginger for flavor. Unfortunately the last time I got this they added celery which I hate and cabbage underneath (not sure I'd this was to just take up room as there seems to be less mushrooms) Overall, if you're in the area and vegan, this is a great option for Chinese food, however if not I'd go elsewhere.

Taian C.

Yelp
Don't tip if you don't like their service. Small compact. Not good for big parties. Food is okay.

Sofia L.

Yelp
I recommend the entire Vegetarian/Vegan Menu. It's hella yummy and I totally recommend coming around lunch hour (11:30am- 3pm). I absolutely love soup of the day- especially the Tofu and Corn soup (#203) . My favorites I like to order is their Steamed White Rice, Fried Ho Fun (#315), Eggplant with Basil (#19), Beef' Brocolli (#569), and Veggie Chicken with Orange Peel (#54). I promise nothing disappoints !! Thank you for making awesome food!! I enjoy dining here

Jacky K C.

Yelp
Since place is a vegan place, alot of people would come in, not just Chinese. 酸辣湯 was very good even though it's missing small strips of pork. 合桃蝦 is the highlight of the night. Texture is pretty much just like prawns. It will be hard to differentiate if you're blindfolded. 蛄嚕肉 is also very tasty. Kinda small pieces but I think it's ok. Maybe texture will change if bigger 芋奶卷 kinda dry. Don't understand why many people order this. 炒飯 actually good though nothing really pops out

Lilly H.

Yelp
One of the best Chinese vegetarian restaurant! I drive all the way from the OC to eat at this restaurant! Quality of Food: 5/5 Everything is incredibly delicious and all the dishes have their own unique exquisite taste.   TOP 3 MUST-TRY:  -Oyster Fried Mushroom w/ Basil -Vegetarian Fish with Hot Bean Sauce -House Special Chicken Ambiance: Casual   Service: Excellent   Expense:$   Overall Rating:5/5

Indra Z.

Yelp
My absolute fave Chinese VEGAN food in LA. I've been coming here for years. They have an extensive menu all vegan. Mock meats, and lots of veggies dishes. I don't know anything about authentic Chinese food, because I've never been in china. But to me this taste all freaking yummy! There's parking in the mall. The restaurant service is always good!

Heidy V.

Yelp
The food is always good! I love this place and the inside is always clean and nice atmosphere.

Matthew C.

Yelp
I love this place. Just well made comfort food. Friendly service. Relaxed vibe. I love the Singapore chow mei fun. The veggies with dried fish are great. If you can't enjoy homestyle food like this then there is no joy in you.

Melody S.

Yelp
This place is terrible. It is my first time here and I was so excited. The line was long but we were fine with it, so we waiting 30min+. A lot of popular items were out. We ordered four dishes, including a steamed fish. Our dishes came out quickly but not the fish. We thought the fish might take a long time so we didn't ask anything at first. But we finished all the other dishes and the fish still hasn't come. We asked a server to check for us and she said they are making it. And we waited another 30mins we still did not get it. We asked again and the server said she has no clue how long we still have to wait, and she said the kitchen forgot our fish dish earlier, but no one notified us anything. And i asked again if she can check how long we need to wait, she said that she is really busy and it is not her fault that the fish is taking a long time. Her attitude is very mean and keeps on saying it is not her problem to help us. She said that it is our fault to not ask the server to check with the kitchen in the first place, and it is kitchen's fault to forget our fish, and it is not her problem. We then decided to cancel the fish and left. This is the worst experience I have ever had with a restaurant. It is unacceptable for a server to say that it is not her problem to help the customers. It is so ridiculous. The food overall is a 3.5/5, but the service is 0/5. I do not recommend this place at all and I will never come back here.

Maggie M.

Yelp
I can't believe this place exist I wish there's something like this in Los Angeles area oh well My friend brought me here and I swear I'll come back and try more dishes because one order ain't enough and they use paper plates which is probably good and they give u tea without asking the ambiance is nice , server is nice overall it's a place for vegans like me

Veronica C.

Yelp
Food is delicious but I always tell my family we are never going back to this place because it has horrible customer service that male server has an attitude the minute you walk into the restaurant I hope the owner listens and talks to his employee

Andy C.

Yelp
This is not the original Happy Family and it is not the same one as in Rowland Heights. Small portion compare to the price. Dishes were too salty. Will never come back again. I got a lot of bug bites inside the restaurant.

Perry P.

Yelp
We wanted to have a vegetarian dinner and decided to try Happy Family Restaurant. It's located at the Atlantic Times Square on the side that faces Atlantic Blvd. Parking is easy to find with their underground parking lot. Depending on when you go, it can get pretty packed because there's tons of stores and shops on the topside, not to mention the 24 Hour Fitness. There wasn't much of a wait when we arrived so we were shown to our table quickly. The table has a cool device that you can use to call a staff member over for service. Restrooms are located towards the back of the dining area on the right. We ordered the following dishes. - Three Flavors Cold Plate. It was ok, nothing special and fairly bland - Vege Shrimp with Walnuts: it had a lot of mayonnaise, but the fried shrimp was yummy and crispy - House Tofu Soup: it was bland - Three Pieces Fried Bread: it has a nice crisp exterior with a fluffy interior - Shanghai Style Sauteed Rice Cake: it was really salty but the rice cake was chewy - Stir Fry Seasonal Vegetable: we had the spinach, but it seemed fairly basic without much flavor - Deep Fried Tofu: crisp, definitely use the dipping sauce for taste - Vegetable Kidney with Basil: way too salty Overall, the majority of the food was mostly bland. I didn't think the food was very special compared to other vegetarian places that I have tried. The staff was nice and you do get fortune cookies as dessert at the end of your meal. Oh, and if you Check In on Yelp, you'll get a free Coconut Jelly.

Nanami C.

Yelp
Comfortable vibe and served with hot tea. Both dishes we ordered are pretty good! The boddha's feast is a dish full of more than 5 ingredients and can taste the freshness, love it! Would definitely want to come back again.

H 9.

Yelp
Best vegetarian food. All plates were well elaborated and tasty. Very surprised for the quality of the food. Even though I'm not vegetarian, this is a great spot for food and will be back. Do recommend for the food and clean tables.
