I Pine for Happy Joe’s Taco Pizza, the Culinary Relic of My Iowa Youth | Bon Appétit

"A beloved regional Midwest pizza-and-ice-cream chain founded in 1972 by Joe Whitty (who described himself as “not unhappy”), it is especially treasured in eastern Iowa for its quirky signature pies, including a Canadian bacon-and-sauerkraut pizza and a BLT pizza topped with extra Canadian bacon, lettuce, tomato, and a mayo drizzle. Its crown jewel and best seller is the taco pizza: a crispy-bottom, puffed-edged crust blistered with a thin layer of tomato paste, layered with refried beans, melted cheese and tomato sauce, seasoned ground beef or sausage (optional), crisp lettuce and cubed tomato, and finished with a blanket of slightly crushed, proprietary nacho-style tortilla chips. The pie is served with packets of the mild, almost ketchup-y “Spicey Joe” taco sauce (available in bottles online), and evokes strong nostalgia — a Proustian madeleine for many locals — while also standing as an example of how regional American food adapts another cuisine’s flavors for local palates; as Iowa’s Latino population has grown, some now see it as a relic of an earlier, less authentic approach to Mexican flavors. The brand’s boxes, festooned with a cartoon likeness of the founder, contribute to its homespun identity." - ByAnn Friedman

We are on our way back to Minnesota from Texas and we’re excited to see there was an Happy Joes in Burlington, Iowa as we used to love the one in Bemidji. However, our experience was disappointing, miserable and a complete waste of money. We went in and when we asked for a menu, the manager offered us the buffet. She did not offer us a menu. We got over to the hot table and there was one dried up taco pizza with sad lettuce. We waited 15 minutes for them to bring out more until finally I asked if they were going to. The waitress told me they were, and five minutes later they brought out one pizza for the 10 of us in the restaurant waiting for pizzas. We waited another 15 minutes. Nothing else came out. When gave up and decided to leave, but took a look. The buffet table was completely empty of pizza, and when we decided to let them know how unhappy we were, they told us that the buffet only went for another 20 minutes and that usually don’t like to fill it up close to the end of the shift. The manager said they ask what kind do you want when you order which she did not, nor did she tell us it was going to end at 1:30 when we paid at 12:50. She then sweetly asked if there was anything we wanted as we were walking out the door. Well, yes, as a matter of fact. We had wanted lunch, but since has already spent nearly 45 minutes, we needed to get back on the road, so we could find something to eat. It was thoroughly disgusting experience and a complete waste of money as I basically paid $22 for two burnt, tiny pieces of taco pizza and pops for my husband and me. I want at least 75% of my money back.

Terrible customer service at corporate office. For three months I've been trying to reach them via any means possible (calls, cell, Facebook and even stopping in) with no response much less action. They donated expired certificates to a charity and when I tried to get them updated so I could redeem, zero interest in connecting with me to discuss. The charity gets to keep my money because it's a good cause but Happy Joe's corporately owned locations will not get a cent from me again.

This was HORRIBLE!! i always wondered why the east moline store had hardly no business well when you spend 45 dollars on 2 pizzas and you get home and they are BURNT and you call to have them remade and it will be another 45 minutes...2 and a half ours total wait...REALLY !! NEVER AGAIN... what a waste of money... ended up with frozen pizza. And your man manager is a jerk. Mine was not the only one burnt !! But never even offered me my money back or to rectify the problem. Nice work happy joes....

Happy joes in Milan, Ill. Tyler waited on us in the party room, he was an absolute delight. He did everything. Very pleasant, humorous, he made our party a great time. Served the food, pop, beer, they all came in to sing happy birthday, ice cream. All my friends say to have Tyler wait on you. He cares, and makes sure your stay there is pleasant, and fulfilled. Thank you for hiring him.
