The Best Boba Shops in Cupertino, San Jose, and the South Bay | Eater SF

"Even as one of the largest beverage chains with more than 1,500 locations around the world, Happy Lemon doesn’t sacrifice quality. The franchise sources fruit from its own Happy Lemon Farm in Taiwan, and most of their toppings are handmade. The Bay Area locations serve a variety of fruit teas, cheese teas, fresh fruit smoothies, fruit slushies, milk teas, classic brewed teas, and yakult, but don’t miss out on their infamous Salted Cheese — a rich, cheesy foam with a dash of rock salt that is layered on top of their tea drinks — and their custardy, house-made puff cream. And for our friends in the city, fear not. Happy Lemon also has three locations in San Francisco." - Cathy Park

Delicious bubble tea! Great location in a strip mall with plenty of parking. Fast service. I got the original milk tea with boba and was pleased. There is only one table and two chairs outside though so there really wasn't much outdoor seating. Will definitely visit again!

We arrived at this location and found no one inside. We called their phone and kept calling out “Hello,” but got no response. The door was open, and the place was unlocked. After about 7–10 minutes, a man finally appeared but didn’t say a word—he acted as if he didn’t even see us. I called out again, “Hello, we want to buy boba,” and only then did he react. I told him we’d been waiting, and he just replied, “OK.” The only possible explanation I could think of was that he didn’t speak English.

My wife was craving for some Thai Iced Tea. So we tried Happy Lemon's thai iced tea. PS. It's a seasonal menu item and may not be on the menu. Was tasty with some salted cheese, we enjoyed it. Unfortunately, they dont make it with light ice.

Love happy lemon! This place has tasty drinks and fast service. There is also a cute area to sit, but it’s small. D11 with soy milk is my favorite!

Google
Luke was very nice serving me drinks! Definitely recommend favorite tea spot. Green milk tea is my favorite.

Google
I ordered the Ube tea with taro And salted cheese ice cream. The salted ice cream is a small box for 3.5 dollars but it's really tasty! The boba tea was also good, a but pricey for 6.5$? Still they have good choices and they are open until 11 so a good choice for late nights

Google
Great boba collection! Loved their Mango orange milk tea with standard boba. The boba were very tasty. Great overall.

Yelp
3.5 stars 3.5 stars Was craving for boba and thought ill take my first trip to Happy Lemon. Went there at around 5pm, the place was crowded. Theres only one ordering screen inside to a queue formed (quite long) for placing order. It felt like the staff was overworked, they just did their job quietly and non stop, no time for greeting or even eye contact. There's dine tables/seats available. I places the order online for Ube milk tea with taro puff cream and boba after seeing the reviews online. It's only available in large size. I opted for zero sugar. The drink was heavy on the stomach, i could skip dinner and it was delicious. Even though I selected 0 sugar it was still sweet, perfect sweetness for me. Honestly its just bring me how one single drink costs almost 9 dollars but i still spend it!

Yelp
This was the perfect spot to hit before a road trip to LA. I got the iced mango orange milk tea with crystal boba which was perfect for the heat. The drink looked so vibrant thanks to the orange peels. Also tasted so refreshing and sweet even at 50% sugar. I highly recommend. We ordered online to go and the service was quick. The store is cute and very clean with a few seats.

Yelp
Pretty busy on a Monday evening (Memorial Day). They didn't have boba available right away, so they asked each person if they wanted to sub for a different topping, or wait an extra 15 ish minutes. I ordered a boba milk tea with puff cream. No complaints! The puff cream was such a good addition to the milk tea. Also the large size was the only option on the kiosk - would be nice to be able to pick sizes. Plenty of parking in lot, a few tables inside but not a super big store.

Yelp
Another great location of happy lemon, next to the popular burger place St John and Costco Lawrence. Kiosk order is easy and quick. Dragon fruit with salted cheese and boba milk tea, both were great
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered their mango jasmine tea with mango boba and original boba to share. It was great and we enjoyed the treat! :)

Yelp
Avoid this location (when ordering the bubble waffles). I am a fan of Happy Lemon and they're usually consistent across the locations I've been at. Ordered a jasmine green tea with boba and the original waffles. The boba didn't have any flavor; I'm guessing they don't add honey to it, if any at all. Drink itself was standard. The bubble waffle came out cold and undercooked! Plus, there were some unknown black pieces in it? I'm not sure if it's chocolate or something, but I wouldn't trust a dish that had ingredients that don't belong? I've never had anything else in my egg puffs and it wasn't part of the filling either. Other Happy Lemon stores have always had crisp and perfectly cooked waffles. We were the only customers during this time too. Not a great experience.

Yelp
We were needing some boba this week, so I decided to pick a new spot from the norm in the area and of course, Happy Lemon is a standard in our old spot so I figured, it was time to drop by. In short, pretty much in line with other Happy Lemon spot, but bummed to hear that lychee jello has been discontinued, but great service with good drinks. L O C A T I O N Happy Lemon is located in one of several plazas along Lawrence Expressway. This one is in the same plaza as St. John's and Central Computers. The parking lot is relatively small, but at the time I went, there was available parking. I N S I D E It's not a huge spot, but they do have seating inside if you want to hang out, but again not huge and it's the Happy Lemon yellow inside. M E N U Has your standard milk teas, they specialize in cheese foam as well as lemonades. Toppings are fairly standard and now super standard as they stopped selling lychee jello not to be mistaken for lychee jelly. Two very different toppings. One is more jello/pudding like so soft and easy to eat versus the lychee jelly which you do need to chew. I got a oolong milk tea with lychee jelly no sugar no ice. Pretty good pretty standard. Solid choice. S E R V I C E The person who helped me order my drink was lovely. Though unfortunately she didn't catch my change from lychee jelly to grass jelly but it's all good, I could totally understand where the communication criss crossed as I was all sad about lychee jello. Easily got my drink in a good short amount of time. Easily paid by card. O V E R A L L Good solid boba option in the area. Definitely more of a grab and go spot. Service was lovely. Drink solid. Will come back for sure as an option when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this location when were trying to find some boba. There was plenty of parking spaces and no wait inside the store. The menu had your standard fruit and milk teas. The did have some special items, like their fresh lemon drinks, slushies, and salted cheese series. Some drinks you could adjust the ice and sweetness. The staff was friendly and helped answer some of my questions. We got a couple of drinks, including the mango lemon slushy, and mango yakult. The slushy was a little more sour than I thought but still good. The mango yakult smoothie was definitely our favorite. Overall pretty decent drinks and good service.

Yelp
There is one right by my house and I've never been. Strawberry shortcake slush and a waffle pastry. That's it, that's all, no more, no less.
google avatar

Lloyd C.

Yelp
3.5 stars. This is a nice tiny store located in the strip mall by St. John's Bar & Grill, Myzen Ramen, etc. The service was nice and friendly. Black Tea w/ Salted Cheese. (100% sweetness and ice). You are supposed to drink at a 45-degree angle, so you drink some of the Black tea and salted cheese at the same time.
google avatar

Arthur T.

Yelp
Below average Happy Lemon location. We ordered: -passion fruit green tea. Ok, borderline undercooked boba -mango green tea with mango boba, good -original bubble waffle, soggier side, not crispy enough Staff was coughing pretty heavy when we went (although wearing masks). Parking is easy in the plaza. I'd prefer to go to other locations than this one.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
Tasted okay. Not worth over $6. Honey green tea with lychee jellies. I really could not drink a large size drink anywhere.
google avatar

LaDonna A.

Yelp
This is my least favorite Happy Lemon location to order from via DoorDash & here's why: 1. They do not sell Bubble Waffles on DD (not sure if they sell them in the store) 2. For the D5 Boba Milk Tea w/Puff Cream their store doesn't allow you to add additional puff cream as a topping for an additional fee. (All the other stores allow this function & it makes the drink SOO much better!!)
google avatar

Anqi H.

Yelp
My Okinawa milk tea without boba was quite good. Milk tea with quality tea just makes it that much better. The staff was friendly and service was prompt. I was intrigued by their extensive menu and their lemon themed drinks. There were a few tables at the store, so it could be a nice hangout spot. I would come back and try some of their other drinks next time!
google avatar

Lawrence M.

Yelp
It's kind of a chain. I'm not terribly impressed. I've tried the brown sugar milk tea, which was on their favorites list. It was ok, and the boba were a little hard. Their fruit teas are more signature, if you're into that. The grapefruit green tea is good. Real hunks of grapefruit, sugar, and, um tea. Ice. And a lid. Simple and refreshing. The waffles are ok. So many snack places, I guess it's hard to stand out.
google avatar

Matthew A.

Yelp
Happy Lemon is always good and has a uniquely tart profile I have yet to find reproduced at any other boba shop. I really only come for the lemon drinks here. New favorite is dragonfruit lemon slushy. Boba quality was perfect and also a good amount. The ratio was perfect and boba was present to the final sip.
google avatar

Michelle V.

Yelp
They were super fast and my lemon slushie was delicious! The line was out the door. Its next to ST. John's on Lawrence Expressway. I'll come back again soon.
google avatar

Eric N.

Yelp
Small happy lemon next to St. John's burgers, which make parking a bit challenging when trying to find parking during lunch and dinner time during the weekdays. Quick service. Placed an order online as I was turning at the light; parked, walked in and my drinks were ready. Click "no straw" when ordering online since there is a charge for it. Just ask for a straw when you go in to pick up your drink. Drinks are made consistent here and are not overly sweet. There are 2 sizes medium/large and you can pick the sugar level, ice level and toppings for most drinks. When I want something fruity I stick with the mango lemon slush with aloe Vera. When I want a tea I stick to the basic boba milk tea with puff cream.
google avatar

Lily P.

Yelp
Not the best happy lemon location. The drinks are okay! However the bubble waffle took over 15 minutes but came out completely cold. I think they must have left it there for a while before calling me to get it. The store wasn't busy at the time either.
google avatar

Marc T.

Yelp
Always a fan of happy lemon! Super happy that this place was still open after dinner; we arrived around 9 pm and orders were taken quickly. The venue has a small seating area inside and outdoor seating. Got a Mango Green tea: Mango is my go to flavor, but this drink tasted watered down despite being 100% sweet. Refreshing but the quality could have been better and sweeter.
google avatar

Aly S.

Yelp
I live close to here so I have gone here often. It's generally a pretty meh place, but it's convenient for me. The quality is quite variable - I don't think they really train people on how to make the drinks. The service is abysmal. Today I was in the plaza for something else, so I ordered on my phone. I sat outside, waiting for my drinks to be ready. I go and ask about my drinks, and they tell me I need to wait. Then 30 minutes go by of me standing, staring at the ready counter. I ask again and apparently my drinks have been behind the counter this whole time. They were warm and tasted like cardboard (probably due to the new paper cups). If this happens to you, demand a remake - wish I had done that since the drinks were terrible after sitting around that long. If you don't have to go to this boba place, go somewhere else.

Yelp
Favorite tea spot in the entire bay area. Every time I hang out withy friends we always end up here. My favorite drink is the green milk tea, and I always come here to study if i'm in the area. The service is great too, workers are very friendly and generous with the food. 10/10 definitely recommend to anyone in the bay.

Kayden C.

Yelp
I'm a happy lemon. Happy about the servers being cool and staying open so late. Happy to be drinking boba with my person. Happy with the wood tables inside creating an environment. A sour lemon about the price, as it's definitely on the pricy side for a cheese foam drink. This is my reminder to get a cheese foam drink 50% sugar with crystal boba. Kicking myself. Metaphorically of course. A bit bland without the topping but I'm excited to come back and give it a round 2. May I just be a happy berry next time. Only sweet things ahead.

fuwen X.

Yelp
Order 3 honey lemon tea with regular sweetness. Three of us does not taste any sweet at all, so the drink tastes awful and disgusting. The worst drink I have in my life !!
google avatar

Charles M.

Yelp
Consistent to the Happy Lemon chain. Tucked off Lawrence in a lowkey plaza. I forget it's even there. Thankfully I remembered this time and finally got to check out this location. New and clean. Bathroom was super tidy. Staff was friendly, patient, and was able to answer questions I had. Shouts out to Kaylah (sp?) and Angie. They were happy to help me and turned my tea out quickly. Thanks again you two. Happy Lemon should be proud! Happy with my drink too. Just me being basic of course; D1. Boba mike tea. ( %75 sweetness / regular ice level ) Will be back forsure as it's a short drive from my home.

Yelp
Staff was super friendly at this location. I forgot my rewards card so he told me to bring it next time with the receipt and he would add the points manually. I tried their Okinawa Fresh Milk Tea with boba for the first time and it was delicious. It was really creamy and not too sweet. They also gave a decent amount of boba and it was firm yet chewy. I also ordered my go to at Happy Lemon: Lemon Yakult with boba and it did not disappoint. Service was also pretty fast for a quiet Friday evening. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Regina S.

Yelp
It's my first time going to this location and honestly I'm not impressed. I'm not sure what this is, because its not hair but it was in my food. Service was quick, because I know it takes awhile for eggs puffs to make. But please just make sure that things like this don't get in food again. Thanks!
google avatar

Jeanelle B.

Yelp
Paid $1 to add boba to my drink and it only came with 7 pieces of boba :( couldn't get it fixed because it was ordered on DoorDash
google avatar

Melanie D.

Yelp
I got a chocolate smoothie with salted cheese. Only good part was the salted cheese. It barely tasted like a chocolate smoothie :( It was bought 30 minutes before closing so I don't know if that makes a difference.
google avatar

Tammy H.

Yelp
Even after all the other shops put salted cheese topping on their menu, Happy Lemon still is #1! It doesn't have that strange aftertaste that many other establishments seem to have and the salty and sweet combo are balanced perfectly with the creamy cheese. I love their strawberry green tea at 0% sugar because they blend fresh strawberry purée with the tea. It's such a refreshing drink, I find myself ordering it on really hot days and when I don't want anything creamy. For those that love lychee, their dragonfruit lychee juice is a great option too. I suggest lowering the sweetness since it's a juice and not tea (which provides some bitter notes) so it can get pretty sweet at normal sugar level. This drink has a great lychee flavor and a little purple dragonfruit pulp which is nice too! It comes with salted cheese but you can also order without it.
google avatar

Cecile B.

Yelp
A small, consistent Happy Lemon location in a nondescript strip mall. In the past, I used to gravitate toward Happy Lemon's slushies and smoothies, but I've since fully converted to its cheese foam offerings. I ordered the medium A2. Black Tea with Salted Cheese ($5.50 + $0.75 for lychee jelly topping) which they claimed was their most popular item, and was impressed by how creamy and decadent it was with zero sugar and no milk. As someone who admittedly doesn't enjoy strong or bitter tea, I appreciated how mild the black tea was (kudos to the cashier for her patient and helpful suggestions!), especially with the salted cheese. The lychee jelly also had a nice texture and flavor, although next time I'll probably ask for less ice to make it easier to eat.
google avatar

Kymberly I.

Yelp
Happy Lemon is one of the better boba places in South Bay. My go-to order is the salted cheese green tea. I would suggest getting 50%-70% sweetness as the salted cheese also has some sweetness to it. My second go-to drink is the Mango- Yakult smoothie. This is very refreshing! I also would suggest getting 50-70% sweet as they put mango puree in it that can be very sweet. If you like sour drinks the dragon fruit lemon smoothie is a good choice. It has a very tart flavor. This specific location has plenty of parking and they accept Apple Pay! They also sell egg waffles in three different flavors. They are still taking COVID measures and the staff wears masks. This location also has great service and try to help customers as quickly and efficiently as possible. Overall, I would never skip an opportunity for Happy Lemon!
google avatar

Nguyen Q.

Yelp
No comment on the food since it is a standard Happy Lemon. I forgot my purse here. The employees said they have it but when I returned to get it, they lost it and said they put it somewhere outside! How hard is it to keep a lost and found item for customer?! I asked to check the camera and they said it was full storage. Very coincidental too! I filed a police report but want to tell how ridiculous this is!
google avatar

Vincent G.

Yelp
Happy Lemon is one of my favorite boba places within the bay area! I used to frequent this location often since it was close to my old work near Great America Parkway, so it was the perfect location for a quick lunch time drink. This area is still one of my favorite boba places to visit since the parking lot has a lot of space and the line is typically not very long. The team has even set up the ordering system that's COVID safe by having the area where you pay blocking off the door way. I usually order either a Green Tea with Salted Cheese or Black Tea with Salted Cheese (both with boba) and it usually depends on what I'm feeling that day. Both drinks are consistently delicious and it's hard to get enough of them. I wouldn't be able to chime in about the other drinks on the menu, but these two are great enough for me. As long as the drinks are this delicious every time, I'll be a customer for life.
google avatar

Susan D.

Yelp
Happy Lemon on Lawrence is my son and my go-to place for delicious Boba and other dessert drinks when we're in Sunnyvale. The drinks are always well-made and they even offer some other snacks, like bubble waffles. There's not really much more to say... I guess I could recommend you try the grapefruit with Yakult or their traditional boba tea. :-) Might see ya there!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
HAPPY LEMON! I love it. You love it. I guess that's enough said. See you there! I think my favourite drink here is the Okinawa! I tend to always just kinda land on it, and it's so darn colourful that you're basically just drawn to it like a moth to a raging blaze of fire and lights and death! So Metal! It is, however, a little sweet, even with all the lower sweetness options they have. But hey, that's just me, and maybe you love candy a lot more than I do. What? Just because I have a little more self control than you, I'm suddenly the bad guy? Pfft, git that corn outta mah face! They are doing well with COVID-19 preparations as well, so that's chill, because it's nice not to have to worry about all the idiots running around, "It's a hoax!" they all yell through their ventilators. Give me a break.

George T.

Yelp
Drinks are always made well at this location. They have waffles and puff cream here as well which we always get. Favorite Happy lemon location in this area
google avatar

Dana D.

Yelp
There's a closer boba place to my work and I didn't even know it! This Happy Lemon is located in a sort of secluded plaza. I've passed by this place so many times and I didn't even know it. I got their most basic drink - boba milk tea. I know - super basic but sometimes milk tea shops even mess that up. I am happy to report that they did not mess it up! I've been to other Happy Lemons where the milk tea was slightly powdery AND the boba had no sweet honey taste. The boba milk tea here was solid - light, almost refreshing with slight sweet boba. 100% sweetness was not too sweet - tasted more like an 75%-80% so would recommend not to adjust it.
google avatar

Dee N.

Yelp
Happy Lemon has a great location, within a plaza with a bar restaurant with outside dining. A lot of parking space. Great menu options. Fast service.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
One many milk tea places in the area. This place is unique due to their unique flavors. They have drinks with salted cheese or lemonade def different than your other milk tea places. I tried the oreo milk tea with salted cheese it was not bad, but I did get it 25 percent sweet, maybe if I get higher Sweetage percentage it might be a bit better but that is on me. My friends got the ube flavor and all of them have said it was so amazing. If I stop by here again next time I'll try the ube also.
google avatar

Olee L.

Yelp
Still open for bubble waffle and boba tea! So happy I get 3 drinks just for myself! Be really happy to see restaurant I support are still there during this unprecedented times. Please stay and keep serving bubble waffles.
google avatar

Sowmya P.

Yelp
Mmmmmmmm.. their salted cheese is soo good! I always love the salted cheese added to my drink but they everything right the boba milk tea sweetness ice and the icing on the top, the salted cheese! Do the 45 angle tilt and keep drinking ! I didn't even care much for the boba though it was very fresh and warm, just the drink by itself was very addictive.. I might have found my new favorite boba spot, loved it

Yelp
DONT BUY! ANT IN THE DRINK! YUCK! 02/12 around 6pm at Sunnyvale Happy Lemon. I ordered a E11-Mango Green Tea w Boba. It is a hot afternoon so I did a big sip. After over half bottle, I just noticed that there is an insect in my drink!! I can NOT imagine what I had just now, almost vomiting! I was a loyal customer for Happy Lemon and ordered hundreds of times. So shock and disappointed this time!
google avatar

Kaetyng C.

Yelp
Happy Lemon is one of the least expensive tea places we have found. They're able to keep prices low without compromising the quality or flavor. Each of our drinks are usually less than $5 and this price includes tax. It's very unlikely nowadays to get tea at this price. Even though it's a chain, I'm still glad to see more shops pop up everywhere in the Bay Area since we really like their drinks. A few of my favorites: - Kumquat Lemon Green Tea: it's on the tart side so if you like those type of drinks, this is definitely a great drink to buy. It comes with lychee jelly and is only $4.75 for a large with the topping included! - Jasmine Green Milk Tea: they make a great jasmine GMT. They balance the jasmine tea and milk well. You don't get too much of either - Boba Puff Cream: when I get this drink, I like to keep it unmixed so I get some of the salty/savory flavors once in a while. I like to get this when I'm craving a black milk tea. This drink comes with boba and is only $5 for a large! Overall, I really the variety Happy Lemon offers and appreciate that they're able to keep prices low.
google avatar

Amanda T.

Yelp
We love happy lemon always a good selection and how every spot is different. The kumquat tea was delicious but I've had the oreo from another location that was better. Definitely recommend this spot though!
google avatar

Mia R.

Yelp
Happy Says it all I love Happy Lemon, especially that mango leech drink is a one of a kind. It's not far from where I work at Mia's Lash Lab Sunnyvale Lash Salon and School. It's a great snack to eat during my breaks.
google avatar

Yelp
First thing that caught my attention when I entered this store is the smell of waffle. So I had to order their bubble waffle. I did not know there were flavors, I could have tried the chocolate had the staff only offered or asked me. Well, this is just my first time here, maybe I'll try it next time. As to their tea, they have lots of option. I was able to try 3 of their drinks today: Rock Salt and Cheese Black Tea, Lemon Oolong and Okinawa. I did like the RSC drink. The other 2 were okay. The pearls are a bit hard on the other 2 drinks. I enjoy softer version of pearls rather than theirs. The place was okay, although I wish they have more chairs. I'd say they're 3.5 stars. But no half stars here, let's just round up because of the nice waffle smell.
google avatar

Viet D.

Yelp
I don't understand how service can be so slow and poor when there is never more than 1-2 people ahead of me. I get having to wait for stuff to be made, but if it's going to take awhile... then those items better be fresh!! Instead I have to wait for a stale waffle because it's just left sitting there..... Those waffle makers could be operated by a baboon and I'd get my order quicker, while still hot.
google avatar

Mary N.

Yelp
You won't be able to spot it from the street but it's definitely worth seeking out. On my visit I tried the okinawa milk tea and the mango Yakult. I went half sweet on both and they were great!
