Some people I know are picky AF when it comes to food. They'll turn their nose up at certain ethnic cuisines (before even giving it a try). They say, they're just being "selective" about what they put in their mouth. No beeyetch, you're being high maintenance, close minded, and you weren't being "selective" about what goes in your mouth when you went home with Joe Blow last night.
When I first read about Happy Lemon, a Taiwanese tea franchise and their signature Salted Cheese Drink Series...not going to lie, I cringed little...and this is coming from a fatty that loves everything.
But, with ALL the raving reviews (most locations have a 4-4.5 star rating), Yelpers can't be wrong. They weren't....but more on that later.
Happy Lemon's Sunnyvale location is the 4th in the South Bay and they're rapidly expanding with locations in Burlingame, Foster City, and San Bruno (Tanforan) in the works!
Happy Lemon has about 50 drinks on the menu which are divided by series: Salted Cheese Series, Fresh Lemon Series, Freshly Squeezed Lemon Series, Classic (e.g. milk tea), Freshly Brewed Tea, Fresh Fruit Matcha, Specialty (e.g. Mango Yakult Smoothie), and Lemon Slushy. Drinks range from $2.75-$4.75 and toppings (boba, red bean, pudding, taro, aloe, tea jelly, etc) are an additional 50 cents. Sweetness and ice levels can be adjusted for all drinks. Cc's accepted.
When you place your order, you'll be given a cute lemon token with a number on it and you can watch the progress of the drinks being made on the flat screen.
I ordered the A4: Light Oolong Tea w/ salted cheese (L - $4.25): http://bit.ly/2rVH7jO and my friend ordered the Summer Special: Iced Oolong Tea w/ fresh grapefruit pieces ($4.75): http://bit.ly/2sVWOfw.
I LOVED my drink and this is by far my favorite drink at Happy Lemon (I've tried their milk teas w/ puff cream at their Cupertino location which I didn't care for). The tea flavor was prominent and the salted cheese added a delicious, creamy richness. The sprinkle of rock salt on top really brings out the floral notes in the tea, like how salt brings out the flavor in desserts. Since it was a scorching 95 degrees that day, I ordered my drink with extra ice and 75% sweetness which was perfect because it was just enough sweetness to balance the bitterness of the oolong while having an extra cold drink.
Initially, "salted cheese" drinks may sound like some gross, phantom pregnancy craving, it really does works. Do NOT use a straw for the salted cheese series drinks...sip it from the little hole so the tea filters through the foam of cheese for maximum flavor and enjoyment.
I learned from Randy F. that you can order double salted cheese for your drinks which I will be doing next time since I love creamy drinks.
I tried a sip of my friend's drink and it was very refreshing and tart. Not my thing but I like that there's nothing artificial about Happy Lemon's fruit drinks.
Happy Lemon is great with branding - their cups are too cute! The store is bright with lots of bright yellows and greens, and a large mural of their mission statement and lemon logo. Employees are fitted in yellow Happy Lemon logo polo shirts.
There's a good amount of seating at this location and a clean restroom (unlike the Cupertino location which is a shared, filthy restroom in the building).
Parking sucks. There's only about 10-12 spots in this tiny plaza.
5 stars for my drink but minus a star for the less than enthusiastic staff and slow service. The Cupertino store has such positive vibes and their employees are cheery, very friendly, and work with a sense of urgency. Maybe I went on an off day, but the staff here seem to be just going through the motions (no smiles) and our order took close to 20 minutes when there was just 2 people ahead of me in line.
Since Ten Ren is closed for renovations during the summer, Happy Lemon is going to be my go to when in the South Bay. That salted cheese hype is real!
