"Happy Valley Village specializes in Dongbei/Northern Chinese cuisine, specifically their iron pot stews. Every table comes with an iron wok built in. The Kang-style bed stoves are traditionally used to retain heat during the cold winter months and allow for the slow cooking that tenderizes meats. The star dish is the braised goose stew iron pot. Diners can add tofu, which soaks up the broth, corn, vermicelli, and bean curd. The stew is accompanied by freshly made cornmeal pancakes, which are prepared tableside by sticking them to the side of the pot and cooking them with the steam of the stew." - Kristie Hang

Google
Authentic northern Chinese food. We really wanted the fish but they ran out and we ended up getting the goose which was still pretty good. The green and white buns were super fluffy and a great compliment to the saltiness of the stew. Also like the fried sweet and sour pork. Service was cordial. The atmosphere felt very festive and the seating was really fun.

This place is sooo authentic for Chinese northern food, both the environment and the food. I can tell the they made the environment just like in China. We ordered the lamb bones with authentic wide green beans and some other dishes including the fried sweet pork, bean curd, meat ball, fried mushrooms, etc. The pot is really big and the amount of food is very good. You will have a feeling you are actually eating at there. The big pot came with the lamb, fungus, cabbage, etc. The corn bread on the side of the pot was very cool and also delicious. The only thing I would say the taste is slightly strong, got a little thirsty afterwards. I guess that type of food is just that way.

We dined in for Mother's day, but I wish we had gone to a different resturant instead! We ordered two soups, one chicken and the other one lamb. The chicken soup was not too bad the only part that was not good about the chicken soup was the level of salt in it. It was so salty that we had to ask them to bring two pots of hot water to dilute it. However the lamb soup was a pure waste of money, it was way saltier than the chicken, and the lamb inside was too sweet as it was immersed in sugar for days. The flavor was terrible and as I showed the photo we could not eat it. Please do not order the lamb soup. Thus is going to be the last timefor us! I hope if you choose to come over you have a better experience!

Google
Happy Valley Village is amazing! The food is really good and authentic, and the portions are huge. It's perfect for a friends gathering. Our server was really nice and attentive. I highly recommend this place, and I will definitely be coming back next time!

Authentic DongBei dishes! Must have the cold noodle appetizer! Red bean buns! Stew goose is the best! Will definitely come back again! The waiter Lion was extremely nice and helpful!

Google
The restaurant is renowned for its Northeastern Chinese cuisine, boasting fresh and high-quality dishes in a unique ambiance. The service is impressive, with the staff having a deep knowledge of the menu and offering suggestions. I'm particularly fond of the hand-made corn breads; they pair excellently with the stew.

Classic iron pot stew. Meat was big and water had lemons but it was great. Also got a cute duck glove.

Yelp
Unique dining experience for sure! I kept getting Instagram ads for this restaurant and couldn't help wanting to go here because of the cute geese I keep seeing. Apparently if you follow them on WeChat or join their rewards program, you can get special deals, discounts, and some of their cute geese merch. When we went on July 4th Saturday, it was a busy restaurant, but our friend go there earlier than us and was able to reserve a spot for 6 and it was in one of their neat booth seating with interesting traditional art all around. The atmosphere was quite loud and lively. You can easily call over their staff for different reasons (water, service, check, etc.) with the call button. Although we wanted to try the goose stew, it was a bit pricier than our range and we opted for something that would be easier for the group to consume. Alas, we also forgot to order the cornbread that is cooked on the side of the hotpot, but I guess it was alright as we were quite full from what we ordered that night. We got the: 1) Hawthorne Soda: -I haven't seen this before and wanted to try it out, but I'm sure you can get this at any Chinese grocery market. -Tastes exactly like Haw flakes but in a soda form, quite nostalgic. 2) Fried Pork with Sweet and Sour Sauce: -Probably my FAVORITE iteration of fried pork with sweet and sour sauce. Most of the times when I've had this dish before the sauce was way too thick and syrupy but this version has a lighter version of the sauce and the exterior was thin and nicely crisp. There's a slight chewiness to the breading too, making it super yummy. -Would definitely go here just to get this again. 3) Shovel Stir Fry Lamb: -This ACTUALLY comes out in a shovel, which is neat for photos. -Deliciously seasoned chunks of lamb that's nice and moist and tender. -Came with a good amount of stir fried bell pepper as well. -Tasted great with the extra rice we got too. 4) Five Vegetable and Cold Noodle: -Another hit with our table. -Noodles were flat and had a nice chewy texture to them that absorbed the peanut butter sauce well. -Lots of julienned chopped veggies and scrambled egg as well. -The waiter mixed it for us too. -Perfect for a hot summer day. 5) Pickled Cabbage Stewed with Pork: -For 6 people we got the serving for 2 people and it was enough to feed all of us, especially with everything else that we ordered beforehand. -The stew comes with Chinese sauerkraut, pork rib, pork belly, and frozen tofu. -They put a timer on your table and it'll go off when it's ready to eat, just know that it's going to be SUPER hot. -Lots of tofu, cabbage, and pork belly within, along with bone in meat too. I enjoyed the pork belly and the pickled taste is nice and sour, aka refreshing with everything else we ordered. -We ordered an extra helping of rice to balance out everything that we ordered. -It was enough for 2 bowls of stew, meat, and tofu for each person, with some of our table clearing out the rest of the stew. Wouldn't mind stopping here again!

Yelp
I visited the restaurant in mid-June, hoping to try the goose pot, but unfortunately, it was still sold out. It seems they have been out of it for a few months, although it was supposed to return by the end of June or early July (I haven't checked on that yet). Since there was no goose, the server recommended the Stewed Tendons and Brains. However, there were no brains available--perhaps it was a typo and should have said Beef, or they were out of it. Either way, I don't think I would have enjoyed that part so I'm glad it wasn't included. My friend and I considered adding another dish or two, but the server assured us that the two-serving pot was sufficient, and I'm glad he did because we even had leftovers. The beef was extremely tender and flavorful. It took about an extra 15 minutes to cook once it was brought to the table, so I wish there had been an appetizer like peanuts to snack on while waiting. Next time, I will definitely add some vegetables because the beef stew was quite rich. The inside of the restaurant is charming with its stuffed goose plushies and trinkets. There are various table sizes to accommodate different party sizes, and the pot is perfectly distanced in the middle of the table so everyone can reach it.

Yelp
Sunday brunch at 11:30 am - stew lamb spine, fried pork, cold noodle, corn flour pancake, beer Service: attentive Ambiance: a happy environment, great vibe Price: reasonable Food quality: incredible A great dining experience, and what a great place for friends to hang out!!! Will come back to try the other dishes. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Impressive decoration, it makes me feel like I'm in an actual Chinese village. Very cozy and authentic look. Food was really good though a bit oily. Servers wear cute uniform which look like my grandma's curtain. The pancake is good but quickly gets cold and hard. Don't order too many.

Cynthia C.

Yelp
Bestie brought me here for my BDay celebration, which also fell on the first day of Lunar New Year 2024, so the decor was even MORE festive than usual. This reminds my friend of her hometown cooking and we ate at a Happy Valley while on a vacation to Vancouver in 2019, so we were excited to check out this "local" venue. Food was excellent, as was service and we ended with full, happy bellies and plenty of left overs. TV monitors were showing Lunar festivities and music was running throughout the restaurant. It was busy on a Friday at noon, but there was plenty of room and didn't feel crowded. They had a group celebrating in their large "room" and one other group in a smaller "room". The 2 of us were seated comfortably in a deep booth with thick cushions. Cold and hot water are offered and available immediately at each table. The metal thermos with the hot water idle just like the one my friend used as a kid. After choosing the meat (lamb neck) and requesting not so spicy broth (it was perfect), a side of eggplant potato and pork dumplings, we sat back and enjoyed those while the server placed the boiling soup base and dry rice noodles into the very hot caldron to cook. I believe the timer was set for 13 minutes. He came back and removed the heavy wooden lid and a burst of amazing aroma filled our nostrils - SO GOOD! Even better was the taste! I would definitely return to enjoy this style of Chinese cuisine. Cheers! "CC"

Yelp
I've frequented the Chinese restaurant next door several times, always curious about the cuisine served at Happy Valley Village. Finally, on Lunar New Year's Eve at 7pm, I managed to visit. Despite the long wait of an hour before being seated, the restaurant was bustling with patrons. Although the staff seemed abundant, they weren't turning tables around swiftly. Specializing in Dongbei Chinese cuisine, particularly goose dishes, we opted for their popular #1 goose with frozen tofu and pancakes. The prevalence of goose-themed merchandise hinted at their specialty. The food was satisfying overall, although I'd recommend skipping the pancakes, which resembled cornbread but lacked sweetness. It was not that great soaking into the soup. I much prefer rice with the soup. Overall it was a good experience despite the wait. I would gladly return to try other dishes on their menu.

Tonny V.

Yelp
First of all, we really like the decor when we first enters. The service overall is excellent. The servers are very attentive and kind. The dishes we ordered were flavorful and authentic. When you come here, you gotta order the stew. We wanted to try goose stew which is popular here, but it was out. Next time, we will try it.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
This definitely looked like it would be a fun and different hot pot experience so we decided to check this spot out! We got the pork rib and corn hot pot, which came with snow peas and wide vermicelli noodles. The pork ribs were super tender but I wasn't the biggest fan of their corn. If you let the broth simmer down for a while, the flavor gets more concentrated and it was perfect with the pancakes that were cooked on the side since they were a bit dense and bland by themselves. We also ordered the spicy lamb and jellyfish with cucumbers on the side. The lamb had a good kick to it but we thought it needed a bit more salt, and this jellyfish was crunchier than what I'm typically used to. It's definitely worth checking it out if you love hot pot and want to try a northern style version of it! I would probably try the goose neck hot pot next time since that's what their known for, and some other sides as well! If you're ever in Hacienda Heights, then this is the place to try!

Yvonne W.

Yelp
We ordered chicken, tofu, vegetables, and the sweet sour pork. Food and service were excellent. It was our first "northern" cuisine experience, we really enjoyed the comfort food and the fun gathering.

Yelp
The outside of very inconspicuous but once you walk in, it's one giant restaurant that has somewhat of a hotpot vibe but not exactly. This place is known for their goose stew which starts at almost 90 dollars for a small serving. I would say even though they say the serving is for 2, it's really for 3-4 people if you order other things. The goose stew is basically in this giant pot in the center like a shared hotpot but you don't add anything to it. The stew is just cooked in front of you. On the menu it lists "sides", these actually things you can add into it. I recommend adding tofu, extra Chinese cabbage, potato, Chinese yam, and any other bean curd item. Add these things in the very beginning and do not decide to add them later. Goose is very similar to duck in terms of taste and texture, but if you remember eating duck, there isn't a lot of meat and lots of bone. It's not small child friendly as there are tiny little bones spread amongst the stew. Since there isn't a lot of meat, I recommend adding sides into it as you'll have more content to eat. The stew I rate it 4/5. It really is something that would taste better overnight. I ordered it non-spicy and I would say if it had a little spicy it would taste much better so I would recommend ordering it "little spicy". There's no dipping sauce or anything like that so what you get is what you get. I do have to say it's a bit bland in the beginning and starts to taste better once the veggies soak in the sauce. Service here is okay. Since the stew is cooked in front of you, the staff has a timer to ensure it's cooked all the way and it's to remind them to come back to stir the pot. You cannot really add anything once it's cooked so be sure to add everything you want at the beginning or else you'll be over cooking other things. Overall, the food is here is good and the service is decent. It's a pretty big place with pretty big portions. A lot of things can be shared and even those individual dishes are meant to be shared. They don't refill your water since they give you a water bottle to fill.

Jeff T.

Yelp
Authentic northern Chinese food. We really wanted the fish but they ran out and we ended up getting the goose which was still pretty good. The green and white buns were super fluffy and a great compliment to the saltiness of the stew. Also like the fried sweet and sour pork. Service was cordial. Yelp

Yelp
My family loved this place - it's a flashback to childhood for them to be crowded around a steaming pot. You come for the Stew Goose, which is great with both green beans and sauerkraut. One is included but you should just pay for both. Lots of optional add-ons, all of them great. Frozen tofu soaks up the soup, vermicelli and bean curd add texture; no bad options here. Don't be shy - the soup is savory and the goose pieces are delicious but they are very bony so there will be hands and lots of gnawing involved. Definitely get the cornmeal pancakes too - they stick them to the side of the pot and they cook in the steam of the soup. Lots of great share plates aside from the stew. Steam Bread has green spinach strips and is so good! The smoky Hong Kong Red Sausage is one of few authentic Chinese sausages I've found, Cucumber and Wood Ear cold and refreshing, and Liang Pi is so amazingly chewy. Service is fine, but you're here for food, and it's an experience not to miss. This place redefines family style eating, and it is just so cool to eat stew out of a giant pot and watch it steam.

Alex H.

Yelp
A very unique restaurant that specializes in goose. Essentially each table has a hot pot in the middle and you can order goose + additional toppings (man tou, veggies, pork belly) and it all stews together. We also got some appetizers to eat while the main pot was bubbling. Everything tasted great and the goose was like a more tender duck meat with a greater depth of flavor. Highly recommend checking this place out even if you don't really know what you're ordering.

Gabriel H.

Yelp
I don't know what I ate but it was different. Pork in a stew. The experience was different and service was acceptable. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to try something new

Nai W.

Yelp
Service is bad. Food is not authentic and not great. Will not come back. Don't waste your time here.

Karen K.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday for dinner around 6:30p for 4 people. Not to busy but it got really busy later. Interested in the Hot Pot. Ordered the fish hot pot for 4 people. You can add sides into the hot pot. We got some mushrooms and Chinese Yam. Not spicey. Corn bread and One large beer. Sautee A-Choy. The fish is very fresh and the soup is very sweet. It's a fun way to have dinner. Next time I'd add vermicelli. The pot is large and we had left overs so may be order for 2 people and try out their other dishes. The decor is a little flowery and needs getting used to. Very large space with private rooms for larger parties.

Ella H.

Yelp
So flavorful with the chili oil and chopped onion. Highly recommended! The server will help mix the noodle made of mung beans. A great appetizer to have at all seasons. Braised stew with delectable veggies. The portion is generous so I recommend that you can order 4 to feed at least 6~8 people.

Yelp
Really recommend this restaurant if you are looking to try North Eastern Chinese cuisine(东北). When we entered the restaurant , we were all surprised by the interior design , as it replicate closely to a typical old style home of North Eastern family. I like it :) What I admire the most, it's the restaurant really try to bring you authentic Chinese North eastern food (东北菜). Shout out to their friendly staff and warm service as well. This became one of highlight our trips to LA and San Diego.

Shirley N.

Yelp
The portions here are huge! One of the small pots is more than enough for 4 people. Flavors here are a bit on the lighter side for the soups, but the really of the dishes are pretty seasoned. The staff here are also really friendly, but if you're sitting in one of the larger rooms it might be a bit difficult to flag a waiter. Otherwise, honestly a really good place to get together with a larger party.

Allen Y.

Yelp
Always happy to be here and food is always fresh and good The dishes are good too! And always refer to friends too

Yelp

Mengy Y.

Yelp
Been here 3 times already. Have tried the chicken and short rib pots. Both are good, but short rib had a more different flavor for me personally. Have concluded that the corn bun is for photos only, and doesn't really taste that great. Prefer the regular bun for soup dipping! 锅包肉hits the spot.

Sonny A.

Yelp
Maybe I'm not keen on authentic Chinese food. But this was just not my cup of tea. We had gone to dinner here for my gf's mother's birthday, you know, "to try something different".. I, personally, only liked one thing on the menu, which was the stir-fried eggplant, potato, and pepper. The eggplant and potatoes were crispy, despite it being drenched in sauce. I don't eat pork and lamb is one of my least favorite type of protein, but alas they chose the latter for our hot pot meal of the night. The broth itself was hearty, but again maybe I am not accustomed to this type of Chinese food but I found it quite unappetizing along with the lamb spine. We also got the steamed bread rolls which were rather plain. Service was good, in the beginning. It was lacking towards the end and more so when they realized we didn't speak the language. One thing I did notice was the "B" grade that this restaurant had. The restaurant itself seemed clean, until I noticed one of the cooks go in and out of the bathroom with their apron and chef's hat on I just stopped eating from there on out. Overall, her mother and brother enjoyed the food.

Nicole Y.

Yelp
Wow such an interesting experience. The food looks delicious! Lol Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

Bruce B.

Yelp
Stunningly delectable is how I would describe the food. Seemingly healthy way of eating not to mention the size of that pot. If you like northern Chinese food then this is a must try!

Tony T.

Yelp
This was my first time having Chinese iron pot stew and the wait was about 1 hour for dinner on a Tuesday. The interior decor is pretty cool - it kind of feels like you're transported to China. I always love coming to these kind of restaurants because it makes you feel like you're dining in another country. We got the 2 servings Stew Goose with corn, tofu bean curd, frozen tofu, corn flour pancake, and wide noodles. All of this was perfectly enough for our party of 5. Although the soup was pretty tasty, I thought the $88 cost was overpriced for how much goose meat you get. I know that goose is more expensive, but it didn't taste much different from duck. If I were to come back, I would probably choose the cheaper chicken, lamb, or cod options. We also got the Dry-fried Mushroom, Fried Pork with Sweet Sour Sauce, and Five Vegetables with Noodle, which were all pretty good as well. Overall, this was a nice experience and our server was very attentive and friendly.

Rachel M.

Yelp
I used to come to Shanlitun. I saw there was a special lunch this morning so I took my parents to have lunch. I didn't expect it to taste so good, so we ordered three more dishes. They were all very delicious. It's worth mentioning that the waiter Guang was so good. I will come again and again for him! I won't cook anymore. I'll just come here from Monday to Friday. Haha

chen x.

Yelp

Yelp
This flour cake is so cute (while gigantic)! Very rural style and fun place to eat at lol

Lin L.

Yelp
We wanted to try something one night for dinner and wound up here. The place was packed on a random Thursday night. waited about 30 minutes for a table. When seated there is a giant pot in the middle. We ordered the fish, a bunch of tofu and other stuff to add into the soup, and noodles. Get a few sides so that you can munch while your soup boils. The soup was delicious and hearty. They gave 2 whole fish for our group of 5. We had plenty to eat and alot of leftovers for takeaway that were also delicious the following day. This is not a place to go when in a hurry but if you're in the mood for authentic hearty Chinese soup, come to Happy Valley.

Crescent Z.

Yelp
The Stewed Chicken Pot is stunning and amazing , and their service is just perfect in my pov, caring and respectful. If you are hesitating to decide what to order.. dishes they suggest usually never go wrong and are worth trying! Ambiance is everything good as well! I love this eating experience!! Fried Pork Guo Bao Rou Sweet and Sour Pork

Yelp
Good place to eat and have fun, recommend the pot in there, the service is good , especially for the Derek and Carlo

Tommy L.

Yelp
My first experience with trying live fish stew was when I visited harbin, China a few years ago. I found It interesting and delicious. I didn't think I would find it here in Southern California. I came with a party of 4 on a Sunday around 6pm and it was already pretty busy, by the time we left there was already a few parties waiting outside. We ordered a side dish of ribs and the 4 person live fish stew. Before the pot that it cooks in gets hot, they stick dough on the side of the pot so it cooks in there with the fish. The bread is so good. The stew itself could use a bit more flavor but it was satisfying to eat. The meal is on the expensive side given they the fish is probably tilapia. Expect to spend about $50+ a person--especially if you add on drinks/alcohol.

Selince Y.

Yelp
Good service, tasty food! Me and my friends all love it! Will come again! Recommended

Yelp
We really like the ambiance and decoration. The food looks really good and the goose stew is the specialty. It's a great chinese new year dinner here.
