Good quality seafood with knowledgeable staff. Shares the space with a quality butcher.

Adam Solomon

Google
It does have some cuts you can't normally get and it offers caviar and oysters with various degrees of freshness and quality. Typically I find the staff to be very honest about what is fresh and that's a huge bonus.

Candace Sauve (Kiki)

Google
Sustainability sourced fish, local 100% grass fed beef - all around high quality products mostly fair pricing. We did put back one chocolate bar that ended up being $17, so not everything is reasonable.

I walked in at 3pm and they told me they stop serving fish and chips at 6pm. I came back just before 545pm and they said actually they stop serving it st 545pm. I was in line ordering at 545pm. Then they lied to my face and told me they didn’t say 6pm. Two of them. Pure gaslighting. Incredibly bad customer service and communication. Extremely disappointing. The worst customer service I’ve had in over a year. Also they put Old Bay seasoning in “New England” clam chowder. Sacrilege. I never want to come back here.

Good selection of fresh fish. Yep, pricey, but worth it. Who wants to spend less and risk getting fish that's past its prime. Folks here are friendly, also.

Christina Lowry

Google
Beautiful clean local fish munger. Love going there . Delicious clam chowder and fish stew. Next door nice fruits veggies, and more.

Mello Wilsted

Google
Incredible selection. Live crab and lobster. Always very fresh fish and shellfish.

They sell fish and chips and clam chowder during lunch time!

Yelp
I was hankering for some fish and chips yesterday for lunch. I swung over to Oakland to visit a friend of mine and he had been to this little Diamond in the rough by his house. I give the fish and chips a solid 4.5 stars and with good customer service a 5 overall. This is primarily a seafood shop inside the Food Market Hall in the Rockridge area on College. They have a parking lot and there was street parking available too. They have several tables outside of the Food Hall; we scored a table on the side in the shade. The order came with 3 nicely fried pieces of cod, light, fluffy, tender and fresh. The batter is a panko type batter versus the beer batter. I prefer the beer batter, thus 4.5 stars versus 5 stars for the fish. The fries are fresh potatoes, fried so they are crunchy and salted. I think they salted the fries with the fish pieces in the container. I thought my fish had a little extra salt. The tarter sauce has a nice flavor mixed with dill versus relish. Overall, excellent fish and chips; we paid $15.95 for an order. I will definitely go there again and top off my meal with a dessert from one of the shops in the Food Hall Market. Lots of other goodies there like a bakery, cheese shop, butcher shop, coffee/tea, wine and fresh pasta to name a few shops.

Yelp
Man! This place takes the cake, fish n chips hot and fish super fresh. Pricey but worth it. We walked pass this place thinking it was a fish shop, it is! Eat healthy eat here.

Yelp
Insanely good fish and fresh seafood. We don't come here often because it's very pricey and the cost makes it out of range for big events, but special for occasional small dinners. They also have prepared foods and soups that are *chef's kiss*

Yelp
While Hapuku is pretty expensive, you're getting very fresh and high quality seafood. And the people working are always super knowledgeable and happy to make suggestions/answer questions. Only gets three stars because there are other spots in the Bay Area where you can get comparable high quality seafood that isn't crazy expensive. I only really go here if I'm in the neighborhood and don't feel like driving further to buy fish.

Yelp
The staff was really friendly and helpful - but I was really upset my order wasn't fulfilled on Valentines day and I didn't find out until I showed up to pick it up. At the start of the week, I ordered 1 lb of scallops ($38) and a dozen oysters ($36) for pickup on Valentines Day. I was mainly interested in the scallops as they would be the main protein for our meal. I showed up in the parking lot on Sunday to pick up my order. After some wait (the attendant was super helpful and nice), I was told that they did not get a delivery of scallops so they couldn't fulfill that item. I couldn't go home empty handed, so instead I bought the only suitable replacement they had - 3 lobster tails for $50 total. I get that seafood is dependent on what's fresh, but I still can't believe they had nothing. I saw on the website that they advertised a Vday meal kit, with scallops. I wonder how many folks they disappointed. Additionally, I'm annoyed they couldn't have called or emailed me before I drove over. What was the point of ordering online and paying whatever service fee I had to pay. This was my first and last time going to this shop. I'm still waiting for the refund. The seafood was largely good. However one oyster, literally the last one I ate, tasted disgusting (it was fishy - something was off). What a terrible way to end my round of oysters.

Yelp
I keep coming back here to find something that will blow me away but... I just haven't yet, and I'm afraid that I never will. I don't wanna say never, but I just haven't been too impressed with what I've had. As far as their fresh seafood goes, they honestly can't be touched. Live lobster and live crab crawling around in the tank. I mean... it can't get any fresher than that! They have all kinds of fresh seafood for sale. Now, I can't say that the price is the greatest... because it ain't. This is Rockridge... and that is FRESH seafood. And, you're gonna pay for it... you're gonna pay A LOT for it. But, the quality is what warrants the price here. They even sell fresh made sushi from Uzen Restaurant down the street (I know the chef personally, and that sushi is good!). The fresh seafood isn't really what I have a problem with per say. It's their hot foods that I just can't seem to fall in love with. It's so convenient for lunch, but their soups and their fish and chips are seriously lacking in flavor. The presentation is wonderful, but it needs more seasoning. They have a daily soup menu that they serve from 12-6 everyday, and they'll even let you sample a little bit of the soup to see if you like it. They also serve fish and chips and fish sandwiches as well. Their fried fish is fried perfectly! Seriously, it could be perfect... COULD be perfect if they just seasoned it more. It's just so damn bland and it makes me sad because it looks so good. Their garlic fries aren't half bad. But, for a place that prides themselves on fresh seafood, I was expecting them to use "fresh" garlic on those fries. Wasn't really a fan of the garlic powder but hey... to each their own I guess. They still tasted okay. The soups are hit or miss. Sometimes they're flavorful, and sometimes they're not. Unfortunately, it's not always so easy to figure it out with a piping hot sample either. More often than not, their soups have been "just okay". Maybe I just haven't found the "one" yet, but I think I've tried enough times to come to the conclusion that it just ranks average.

Yelp
Popped in to do my Christmas Eve meal shopping here. I prefer supporting smaller businesses when I can. Unfortunately, my experience here today was pretty awful. First, I waited patiently for my turn to be helped. A white man had walked in after me and was also waiting. I'm a black woman. When the guy behind the counter finished with his customer, he asked the white guy what he needed. Didn't bother to ask who was next. Worse yet, the white guy knew I was there first and proceeded to place his order. Not a, "Oh, she was next." But this review is not for his entitled a$$. A woman behind the counter knew I was there first and instructed the guy to help me next. So we're already off on the wrong foot. I needed halibut. $42/lb. Outrageous, but it's what I expect for this establishment. After wrapping up my halibut. I asked for a pound of debearded mussels and was informed they don't debeard. I was kinda shocked by that one. Their pricing is insane. They should offer service that is commensurate with that pricing. I took my halibut and some fish broth and proceeded to Whole Foods to finish up my shopping. In retrospect, I wish I'd left it all behind and just done all my shopping at Whole Foods. Oh and the halibut was on sale for $22/lb there. I love Market Hall and will continue to patronize all the shops there with the exception of Hapaku. For the record, the woman working there apologized for her coworker's racist behavior and poor customer service.

Yelp
Although I am not the biggest fan of fish and chips, I decided to check out Hapuku Fish Shop and see if their version of the meal was worth a visit. It's located in Market Hall near the meat section, and they do offer fish for purchase if you are looking for a fish monger. The ordering process was quite smooth, and despite visiting on the weekend while the market was bustling, there was not much of a line. I thought it was great that they prepared the fish fresh to order, and I was excited to try the garlic fries (I'm a sucker for garlic). While I liked that the fish was seasoned, I thought the batter was not crispy enough. The fish ended up having a somewhat mushy texture, which is not what I expect with your typical fish and chips. They offered a mountain of fries; seriously, it was probably the biggest serving of fries that I had seen in a long time. However, the garlic flavoring was pretty bland; I gather that they just used garlic powder, and some fresh, chopped garlic could have really boosted the taste. I would consider going back to try it again (especially since the service was great), but my first experience was a medium disappointment.

Yelp
Everyone who has ever visited Rockridge has possibly seen Market hall and probably strolled through it. I discovered a gem hidden behind market hall after their wine and cheese area which is their fish shop. We got the fried fish with garlic fries and oh my god they were good !! The fish was soft and white and the batter was delicious and light and so flavourful. It did not feel like a heavy fried dish at all. The fries were home style and very tasty too. Note : The portions are big so of you are not too hungry two people can share a fish n chips. Also ask for more tartar sauce because it's so good !! The staff is very friendly and after your shopping at market hall stop by for a treat! Will be back for sure and recommend it to all :)

Yelp
4.5 stars! I am only writing this for the fish and chips! The fish is super fresh, and it literally falls apart when you try and eat it with a fork! Super crispy and delicious- a hidden gem one must try before leaving Berkeley! The first time I came, I tried the curry fries which were delicious as well. Friendly staff; no complaints here. Tables outside where you can stand and eat. I wish they have water/water cups because I get thirsty eating those fish and chips.

Yelp
Nice fish selection but moon pricing. PEI mussels, for example, at $12.99 per pound (on 3/1/23)! Wow, several competitors sell them for less than half of that price. Kia Ora salmon, great, but does anyone know of better pricing than $32.99 per pound?

Yelp
We were really craving mussels and Whole Foods did not have any today so we found this shop in rockridge. The service was super friendly and helpful. Mussels were fresh and delicious. I would highly recommend this shop and we will be coming back soon.

Yelp
Service and quality--great reasons to come here! Whenever my husband and I shop at Market Hall, we almost always stop here to get a piece of wild salmon steak, a pound of shrimp cocktail or a filet of two of halibut. I have also purchased a live Dungeness crab here and had them steam it for me during California crab season. Want lobster? You can also have them steam a live lobster. On Saturdays, they have an oyster stand where you can get oysters for $2 each. If you're too lazy to cook fish, you can also buy fish and chips here. We've only done that once, but it was good and inexpensive. You can eat on the benches just outside of Market Hall. Best to eat it as soon as it comes out of the fryer. If you're looking for fish stock for bouillabaisse or cioppino, they sell stock here. So much easier to buy than to make! After searching for fish heads and bones and going through all the steps in making fish stock, I've learned how time consuming it is. However, since good fish stock is critical in making a great bouillabaisse, you really have to have it one way or the other! Buy it here! Yes, they're pricey, but good wild fish and shellfish are worth it. We avoid eating farmed and unsustainably caught fish, and since we only eat fish/shellfish twice a week, the prices are not an issue for us. It's still cheaper to eat good fish or shellfish at home compared to eating them in a restaurant!

Yelp
Located inside Market Hall, this fish shop has some daily specials, but I came here to try their fish sandwich and fish and chips. We tried both, one with fries and one with curry fries. It was sooo good! The fish was huge (3 large pieces), the breading was unlike most other fried fish...seemed to be more like panko rather than batter. The fish was crisp, and came piping hot! The fish in the sandwich was too big for the bread. It was a bit messier to eat, but still very tasty. The curry fries were phenomenal (I liked them better than the garlic ones). The portions were so large that I couldn't even finish my order, but I'd come back for more! No seating, just a tall table to eat at or else you can walk to the cafe area and use any of the tables there.

Yelp
This is the fish stall inside Market Hall. We came here earlier today looking for mussels. Slightly pricey at $7.99/lb, but they looked pretty fresh. We got a little over 1.5lb, and made sure to keep them on ice, in the fridge, bag open so they could breathe. When we sorted through before cooking, there were 3 dead mussels that had large cracks and didn't close their shell (tossed these), and another 3 with cracks/chips that seemed alive, so we cooked them. They were mostly debearded (which is great!), so I'm surprised the staff didn't catch the ones with really obvious cracks. We steamed the mussels in a Bloody Mary sauce--delicious. The mussels were tender and tasted light and fresh. Paired with an Acme baguette also from Market Hall. Would definitely get more fish from Hapuku. The surrounding stalls are also pretty fab: Marin Sun Farms, and Paul Marcus Wines.

Yelp
Wonderful Raw fish, but i didnot like their prepared food. I ordered fish and chips as well as fish sandwich. Both came with french fries. French fries were consistently greasy and soggy (on multiple occasions). The coating on the fish was greasy (on multipleoccasions). Nice pieces of fish though. Last time i had a sandwich, i got very long black hair in it. I was totally grossed out. I do not think i will be coming back for these type of items.

Yelp
I had a bad experience ordering at Hapuku. I ordered crabs 2.5 weeks in advance for a large family meal. 2 hours before the pick up time I received a phone call alerting me that they did not have any crabs but wanted me to replace it with lobsters (which were significantly more expensive). This was an extremely disappointing experience as the holiday meal was derailed by this.

Meredith L.

Yelp
This is a heads up for people looking for sashimi grade fish - they get everything on ice here, no sashimi grade salmon. Dude at the counter was super friendly and pointed me to the Shattuck Berkeley Bowl Edited to add: Best deal I eventually found is at Yaoya-san's -- Tokyo Fish Market and Berkeley Bowl have about the same pricing (~$22/21 per pound) vs $16

Yelp
The two best things about this fish market: The fries, omg you don't usually see fries done right and I am not a fry person (I advocate for those fries). Next the pop up oyster bar! Yay! (Clapping) Not the biggest steal. I love my $1 oysters and these are $2, but that's not bad. The oysters are yummy: Kusshis and Miyagis. Fresh, the guys are friendly and it's just really fun. They also have yummy seafood soups bisques and chowders, sandwhiches and fish an chips. So yup, it's cool.

Yelp
What I ate: Ceviche w/ chips Visit date: October 9, 2011 First time? Yes. The Hapuku Fish Shop had a food booth at the Rockridge Out & About event. When I saw ceviche on the menu, I was interested. When I saw someone walk away from the booth with ceviche in hand, I was sold. The ceviche definitely tasted fresh. It could have used a little more salt, though the chips helped a little. I also would have liked some hot sauce. I definitely got my money's worth-- $6 for a hearty portion of ceviche!

Yelp
I've never had their hot food, but I've bought fish here a couple of times, primarily King Salmon. I'll say that their seafood is about Whole Foods quality, but it is a lot more expensive. I'd be willing to pay more for a more unique selection or kick-ass service, but that just isn't provided here. Most of the people that work here weren't terribly nice and wouldn't handle multiple people waiting to be helped very well, often skipping folks in line.

John S.

Yelp
I'm an optimistic person, hopeful person. And sometimes that doesn't work for me. And I'm afraid the Hapuku Fish Shop is an example of that. I work in Rockridge and I'm in Market Hall all the time. I've bought fish at Hapuku countless times. And admittedly, I've had some good fish from there (I seem to have the best luck with the salmon -- and I don't know whether that has something to do with the type of fish). But too many times, tonight being the last time, I've come home with fish that smells really fishy -- in a bad way. (As other reviewers have noted.) Despite this, I keep trying, but I'm ready to give up. I think a lot of people don't know that fresh fish really SHOULDN'T actually smell "fishy." Of course, a lot of us grew up with bad fish that DID smell stinky and heard about fish being "fishy." But although REALLY fresh fish might have a scent, it shouldn't be a stinking fishy smell. Even though I sometimes luck out and get a great piece of fish, I gave Hapuku only 1 star. That's because, given the price point for this fish -- and its placement in Market Hall -- it should be CONSISTENTLY fresh and delicious. And it's not. There are far too many times that I've needed to go back and tell the staff -- whom I've always experienced as friendly and helpful -- that the fish was bad. There have even been times when the fish was simply inedible. That should never happen. I go home at night expecting the fish I bought that day is ready to eat. But too often, it's not been and shouldn't be eaten. I finally realize that with Hapuku, I can't depend on eating "fresh" fish I bought that day. And that's a problem. I hope Hapuku will take note. I also know the Wilson's who own Market Hall. I hope they take notice of reviews like this. But I'll be passing along this message to them as well, so they take note too. Sadly, with regrets.... P.S. It's noteworthy to see that Hapuku has been completely unresponsive to concerns voiced in their Yelp reviews. That suggests to me that I'm right in deciding to not remain hopeful about this establishment.

Yelp
Great store and service. The star rating is for poor pricing practices. The inventory is very similar to Whole Foods but the prices for some items are 3 times higher. For the same fish from the same producer $5.99 vs $15.99. Im a regular here, made the effort to double check prices and now feel cheated.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
The problem here is that this is not a restaurant but it is being reviewed as one. As a place to get prepared food, it's not the best. There are time periods associated with when you can get the food and there is no where to eat it. Fish and chips are on the menu, but the sign says you can only get them until 6 p.m.

Yelp
Love this shop. Love Market Hall. Always fresh and delicious. I've relied on this fish shop for years. I can always find something to make- Usually for a special meal or a fancy meal with friends/family. People think I'm an incredible cook, but I credit the incredible fish. This year, for Thanksgiving, we went with salmon and oh we were all thankful! Haha. They have a sustainably raised salmon from New Zealand (usually we go for wild caught obviously, but trusted them and have never tasted a better salmon. Hands down). I served it with roasted veggies and fresh cranberry sauce. Yum. One of the other best things I've purchased there was handmade salmon sausage. I wish they had this more regularly because it really was wonderful. Anyway, if you're lucky enough to be there when they have it- grab it! One last thing- kudos to Market Hall for a smashing Thanksgiving setup. The BART parking lot, the labeled lines, and friendly helpful staff keeping everyone informed and welcomed. I had been dreading it, my 2 little boys and I actually had a lot of fun!

Yelp
Delicious, super-fresh fish sandwich and soup. (Reasonably priced, too, by local standards. The sandwich is pretty big.) Soup flavor changes every day. Staff is wonderful! A hidden lunchtime gem.

Yelp
The fish n chips was good! Portions were hhuugge considering the price. Really fresh and friendly staff. (I meant the fish was fresh and the staff was friendly.) Yikes. Lol

Yelp
I confess - I am a very bad vegan. I have cats. They are not vegan. Tuesday, I popped in here to pick up some fish scraps for my kitties as a special Valentine's treat and walked home with 8 oz of fish scraps courtesy of the friendly, handsome young man behind the counter. My kitties were VERY happy with this special dinner of tuna & mackerel scraps that might have otherwise gone to waste - they say THANK YOU to Hapaku!

Yelp
Always see smiling faces and great service. And did I mention the freshest seafood in the area.

Yelp
We ordered the fish sandwich and the fish n chips. They were out of cod so we got them with sole. Both = YUM!!!!! But mine was the sandwich and I think it was better because it came with coleslaw and a more complex flavor because of it :) The breading on their fish is more along the lines of panko, rather than a batter, which makes it way less greasy. The fish tasted fresh and both dishes came with nice big fillets. The fries are thin rather than those thick wedges that usually accompany fish n chips (I prefer thin fries), and were really delicious, but a bit salty. The fish sandwich comes with a yummy, tangy coleslaw which compliments the fish nicely, and both dishes were served with a side of really good tartar sauce and ketchup. We ordered our food to-go, and where it would of course be better if eaten at the location (there is a counter you can stand at, or some random spots outside, but no real formal seating), the to-go boxes are wax lined instead of being absorbent paper, which makes the food a little soggy by the time you get home. We understand that this is going to happen when ordering "to-go," however, lining the containers with paper, or wrapping the food in paper, would go a long way in ensuring a crispier product for the travel home. Overall, as fish n chips go, they were the best i've ever had!
google avatar

Amber B.

Yelp
This review is for the fried fish sandwich. Fantastic. Fresh fish filet fried when I ordered it, hot and crispy. On an acme roll with slaw. Tartar sauce in the side is outstanding. The fries were limp, so request them extra fried if you don't like limp fries.

Yelp
Contrary to popular belief, the most humane way to kill a lobster is not to immerse it in a pot of raging, boiling water. This is a slow death. The proper way is to stab it in one swift movement, right behind the head. And this is exactly what the prices do to your net worth after shopping at Hapuku. (But they have all of my sinful fish. The ones on the Seafood Watch's 'avoid list'. Sturgeon, Chilean sea bass, ahi, scallops, and Lobsters, naturally.)
google avatar

Yelp
The vast majority of my friends/social circle living in the East Bay, including me, live here because we were priced out of San Francisco. One of the consolation prices of living here means cheaper groceries, cheaper gas, cheaper dining...cheaper everything, in addition to the wonderful sunshine and "true" summer. Now that I do my shopping at Berkeley Bowl and Monterey Market, I scoff at my old Bi-Rite and find its prices downright offensive now. What does this have to do with Hapuku Fish Shop, impatient readers are already wondering? This: The fish here is more expensive than even SF's Bi-Rite market. OUCH. If I happen to be in SF and happen to find parking (like once a year) then I happen to wander into Bi-Rite to get its higher quality and less expensive char offering. The fish here at Hapuku is fine. The quality is good. But I haven't found it to be so over-the-top amazing/special that it justifies the prices. Seriously frustrating for those of us wishing for a nearby fish market. Also what's good and better priced are the fish and chips and lunch specials. I highly recommend them. And the staff is VERY friendly and I appreciate that.

Sabah T.

Yelp
The service and seafood is always amazing. We have never been disappointed! A must try when in Rockridge.

M E.

Yelp
Bought some crab here this week. It was cleaned, cracked, and prepackaged so I did not get to see the crab until I got home. The crab was not fresh, stinky, and not edible. Very disappointed sine I bought some fish and soup here before and they were fine.

Yelp
Decided to get some fish for my sons birthday he wanted ceviche. I've often been to this market picking up cheeses, pasta and meat but never seafood. I stood at the counter with my sister looking at the fish. I waited patiently to be helped as another gentleman was helped ahead of me. Ok maybe I was overlooked. but as it happened again I was very irritated. I was never acknowledged or my sister. I decided to take my order to another market. If your working the counter it is your job as customer service to know which customer to help. I find not being acknowledged as a customer extremely bad business and just plain rude ! Sorry fish market you lost my business ! Maybe it was because I'm Hispanic ? hate to assume that ! but did the counter guy assume I was just staring at the fish and not interested in buying ?

Yelp
Disclaimer: I am writing about their hot foods that are availabe Thurs-Fri-Saturday only from 12-7pm- Ok, I'l admit it, I have been on a recent culinary losing streak. It would either a. i hit up a place and it just sucks flat out, or b. try somewhere, love it, then each subsequent time it gets worse or becomes completely inconsistent. I tried Hapuka for the first time today----who knows, I loved it today and it fall into Catagory B in due time, but I am hopeful. I have faith. Why? -what makes things different? Simplicity. today I ordered a simply made, but simply delishious sandwich---I am talking. *hush*, lines down the street ala Bakesale betty delishious. So here is the deal, on Thur/Fri/Sat from 12-7pm they serve either Fish and Chips or Sandwiches. The sandwiches can be ordered either Fried or Grilled---They both come with Fries and the Fish and Chips come with slaw, in the sandwich the slaw comes inside the sandwich. Other than that, you choose your fish, they all are fresh and come from the fresh fish you can purchase over the counter, The choices are all local and fresh, the choices are halibut, petrale, rock cod, catfish, or basa in the order of cost----the halibut is $10.99, the Basa is $6.99 oro $7.99 I had the grilled rock cod which was $8.99----it takes 10-15 mins if you want it grilled, but the wait was worth it--, the employee took a piece out, weight it, it was approx 1/3 lb, checked for any stray bones--he told me it would take 20 mins, but it will give you time to walk around the hall eating free cheese as your appetizer, in actuality it took a bit over 10mins the sandwich comes on a perfectly, I mean pefectly grilled Semifreddi's Ciabatta. The fish is placed alongside the slaw --thats it-simple, but outstanding. The fries are freshly cut, and to be honest weren't the best, but still good., They may not have been freshly fried as they lost their crispyness. if i could change something, it would be less slaw so that the taste of the grilled fish came through more. I will try the halibut next time since it is a denser thicker cut--- I will have to try the fish and chips as well. ----- So I am hopeful, i am hopeful this can become a regular lunch spot for me----i can't see how it can't be, the fish is fresh, local, the bread is fresh, ----

Yelp
Used to shop here for years but the service has gone way down and prices way up lately. Tonight was a perfect example. I was waiting to purchase some fish and the attendant, a young African lady was too busy prepping food and just ignores the people waiting to purchase. I finally get her attention and she tells me to wait while she finishes up. Mind you she was in no hurry to serve her clients. I just went across to the butcher shop and got a steak and went home. I hope the shop owner is reading this!

Yelp
I waited in line for almost 1 hour before opening Christmas Eve, once they opened I picked out 3 live crab which were put in a bowl and waited to have them wrapped. As I watched they took the crab I picked out to purchase and gave them to another customer, The crabs that I picked out were large, the sales clerk gave me 3 small crabs and said there is nothing else he could do, too busy to go pick out 3 more. I have been shopping there since 1991, they are very high priced which I don't mind because the fish is fresh, but I do expect the service that matches there prices.

Yelp
Had some fish and chips here using rock cod and a cup of the old world fish stew. Neither blew my mind but they were reasonably priced and the fish was undeniably fresh tasting. I'd be interested in buying some fish to take home and cook next time I go.

Yelp
Normally we go to Tokyo Fish market but they are not open on Sunday. So a quick search on Yelp brought up this cute little fish shop close to the farmers market we go to on Sunday. We got Scollops, shrimp, sole, salmon and some fish stock. Everything was fresh and beautiful. The fish stock is excellent. I love that the fish and meat market are together with a small grocery store just a few steps always. Located in a very cute area right close to BART. There is street parking but is is crowed and the parking is a bit limited. We got there right before it opened, at 10:00, and had to park around the block. Can't imagine what the parking is like later in the day. I would recommend coming early to beat the rush.

Yelp
Jeeze - so expensive and nothing local except some sardines. Why would I want to pay top shelf prices for some tuna that was previously frozen and imported from Alaska? Give me the Berkeley Bowl any time, or if I happen to be in the city, Sun Fat.

Yelp
Super fresh fish, tastefully prepared, and fast friendly service. One of the best fish sandwiches I've had in awhile. I think I'll go fish and chips next time to highlight the yummy fish over the bun.

Yelp
The highest quality retail seafood in the Bay, -- freshness delivered every morning from a selective distributor with clear eyes and bright red lips, packed loosely on drained ice, with slim inventory that clears by night's end. A true compliment to Evan and his crew; their attention to detail and sincere care. The local Albacore when running is a must, as well as any of the seasonal catches. Their display is minimal, -- the way it should be, if ever at all.

Yelp
What happened?! Today I decided to order fish and chips but asked for the fish to be grilled instead. Even if it were fried in batter it would have been super small! Even the amount of fries was about half the amount of usual! So jipped:(

Yelp
Friendly, cut and trimmed my salmon :) earlier in the day probably would have had a better selection.

Yelp
Really wonderful fried fish sandwich and fish & chips, plus great service. Was having a craving so Canada promptly stopped when he got off Bart and brought me home one of each. Yum! I agree with other reviewers that the breading is more like panko. The bread the sandwich is on really makes it as well. The portions are large- neither of us finished our plate. I wasn't a huge fan of either fries (curry or garlic), would prefer just plain next time. Will for sure come back for either item - as well as their selection of other goodies.

Yelp
I just asked for trouble by going back to Hapuku Fish Market. Here we go again ... I went in yesterday, Dec 30, to pre-order oysters and tuna for my New Year's Eve menu. I ordered 3 dozen oysters to be shucked; 1 1/2 dozen of 2 types. I made sure to repeat my order to be absolutely sure that it was 1 1/2 dozen of EACH type NOT combined. When I came in today to pick them up they told me that the order was only for 18 oysters. I had to simply laugh. They were also not shucked since they had not written the order that way. I know that I was clear about this, but the person taking the order has not been trained. They failed to give me my order number, which appeared to be common amongst other customers around me. The tuna that I asked to be reserved was not on the order at all, so I consider myself lucky that it was available. I'm not really surprised at any of this since it's happened before. And as I mentioned in my previous review, certain staff literally do not know what certain fish tastes like nor where it's from. These are the two most basic components to running a food service business. It speaks to a lack of training and I will not return there unless out of shear desperation. My experiences have already been so bad that I will actually try to avoid getting fish in lieu of meat to just avoid the Hapuku experience altogether. All of the other vendors at Market Hall besides Hapuku are amazing. They have great customer service and seem to truly enjoy their jobs and have passion for food. I cannot say the same for Hapuku. Given the prices I am totally offended that top notch service is the exception and not the norm.

Yelp
I tried Hapuku based on the positive yelp reviews. I ordered the fish and chips and the crab and scallops soup. The fish was thickly coated and although crisp, which ai liked, it was totally tasteless. The texture of the cod was soft, almost mushy. The much-heralded garlic fries were greasy and soft. The fish soup, my last hope to salvage this food experience - nope, completely devoid of flavor. It's as though the food is prepared for people with multiple dietary restrictions like low/no salt, no pepper, no herbs, no spices or anything else that makes food taste good. I do not recommend.
